1 First State Mini Club Newsletter---February 2018 February 2018 MEETING DATE is Thursday February 15. at 7 PM- 9PM at the New Castle Senior Center, 400 South Street, New Castle DE President s Message Connie Gorman and Wanda Simons, co-presidents Connie and I hope you all have made it through January keeping well and warm; now there are only February and March to go before our show and hopefully, some nice Spring weather. Last month with the labelling of postcards, discussion of painted furniture samples and water features, there was little time for painting the House of Miniatures pieces you all constructed and are now ready for decorating. So, we ll need to have a little spill-over this month to catch up. See news elsewhere in this issue for what to bring for painting flowers and vines, as well as being ready to pour for your water feature that each club project is supposed to have. The fact that we need candidates for officers for isn t new news we continue to hope that someone(s) will step up and agree to run for president (or co-presidents with a friend??). It s fun to help steer the future of this amazing club of miniaturists; there s not a huge load of stuff to do. Connie and I will support you always to keep the club and what it offers vital, fun, informative, and inspiring. Last I heard, we do have a volunteer for secretary who would like to postpone taking office until mid-fall, probably. And Marnie would like to be relieved of her newsletter commitment. Yes, we do need several of you to step up! Pretty please? Due to Wanda s winter cataract surgeries, she s running a bit behind in many things (took down her Christmas trees on February 1. But she has started her fairy garden project and is excited by the possibilities it offers to use some natural materials brought from Missouri cousins homes (think wood chips made by beavers and fungi from a backyard woodpile!). We hope you re moving ahead on your project, too, and are enjoying it. Smile, it keeps the wrinkles from forming! See you on February 15, Wanda and Connie IF YOU HAVEN T GOTTEN YOUR TOM FREY MINI TURNED VESSELS, PLEASE LET WANDA KNOW IF YOU WANT THEM Last month the club voted to allow each member to choose two for themselves from the large collection of Tom s wonderful wooden and acrylic goblets and vases. If they aren t picked up at the February meeting or you haven t made arrangements with Wanda, you will lose this opportunity. Why? The remainder will be sold at our show to benefit the club as per Tom s wishes, and they need to be packaged and priced soon. Contact Wanda at wmsimons@udel.edu or (302) First State Mini Club Newsletter February 15, 2018 P a g e 1
2 HOSPITALITY Bring your own drink/cup! February Refreshments: Angie Phillips, Bonnie Kincaid, Leslie Shaffner, Joan Hoyt March Refreshments: Diane Scheuer, Grace Hayford, Mary Ellen Raun, Marion Hogan April Refreshments: Lois Weyer, Pat Deverell, Rose Gambacorta, Karen Kaminski May: All February PROGRAM WATER FEATURE POURING: Marnie will have casting resin for your water feature, including a fountain or water fall. Since we will be able to actually do the casting, plan to your needs for it so adequate materials can be brought then. Remember! All club projects need a need a water feature! The area should be sealed and painted, ready for the casting. EnviroTex and other products will be used. Below left: members Lucile Hoffman, Diane DeWalt, Diane Scheuer, and George Hoffman looking at a waterfall feature beneath a gazebo by Marnie King. Right: Diane DeWalt and Diane Scheuer, who is sharing her fountains with cast resin water. First State Mini Club Newsletter February 15, 2018 P a g e 2
3 DECORATING FURNITURE: We will continue painting the furniture kits you assembled in the fall so that they can be sold at the club show in April. Lois has kindly put on two coats of white paint as undercoating of the unfinished pieces and now it's time to add some decorative touches! We will be learning to do simple, freehand flower, vine and leaf designs, so PLEASE BRING (if you have) your smallest, pointed paintbrushes for detail work. Also bring a small container for water to clean your brushes between colors and a small piece of cloth or a couple of paper towels. If you did your little trial board given you in January, you ll know if you re a better vine-maker, leaf-maker or parts of a flower-maker. Maybe we ll work in teams or not as you wish. We'll also learn how to do distressed and crackle finishes and will make sample boards to take home. Below: Marnie King with her painted furniture by various artists: Laura Crain (yellow cabinet), Orin Fjare (grand piano), and Karen Barone (pale blue in front), and Natasha Benskovsky (sp! hex table). Board positions/officers need to be nominated. SHOW--Bring your exhibit forms for our show! We need exhibits give to Marnie. Forms will be at the meeting and with newsletter. 4 Programs for the rest of the year MARCH Landscaping ideas presented by Wanda Simons. Tip: if you use coffee grounds for soil, it will have an odor in humid weather; dried used tea leaves work better. Show Program stapling Lois Weyer Bring your stapler! Voting for next year s club project. Voting for officers. Installation. APRIL Tote bag favor for NAME convention, Sweet Tea and Sunshine in SC (August). Give Bonnie and Susan any ideas that you might have. We are planning to simulate the sweet grass basket using the rag basket technique. We could use 3/8 x 2 tan and cream colors from quilting fabrics to make these. Make some, keep one! MAY Party everyone brings food. Shoe-box sales (tag all items with price and your name) ANNOUNCEMENTS ANOTHER DONATED DOLLHOUSE -- If the name Linda Lavender sounds familiar to any of you old-timers, yes, she belonged to FSMC once upon a time. We hope she may join us again after taking some time off from miniatures. Now, she has donated to the club a dollhouse in need of refurbishment that she found at Middletown s Goodwill store, and brought it to our January meeting. It has been evaluated by Lois Weyer and she has purchased a few materials to spruce it up to sell at our show! Thank you so much, Linda and Lois. HELP WANTED!!! FSMC is an equal opportunity "employer" (meaning "everyone can help!!"). Since Katheryn has needed to step back from her position as Secretary, is there a volunteer to finish out the next months til July? We will need someone to take minutes at Board and Club meetings. Since Deb Kostyk has left the area, we would like someone to work with her to handle our Facebook page. And do remember that we need nominee(s) for the office of President as Connie and Wanda will be finishing their terms in the summer. The Newsletter needs a new voice..marnie has done it for 5 years! CALENDAR of Mini Events coming up ask around there may be carpools going. Also check M-1 and E-1 Newsletter, available at NAME website (miniatures.org). So, build a (small) tree if you want!! 2019 Project-- Do bring ideas for club project to the February meeting. They can be prototypes, magazine photos, plans or sketches. OUTREACH Marnie King April 22, Sunday,12-4, is the Festival at Fort Christina that the Swedish groups have been holding at the Kalmar Nyckel shipyards, Old Swedes church and the Fort. Fort Christina Park is now participating since it is part of the DE State Park. There will be fun family activities free admission, free water taxi up the Christina, free tour of the Kalmar museum (but there is a fee to tour the KN ship), some crafters, music, bouncy house, food. It would be lovely to have our club be represented (no exhibit fee for non-profit) and we need some volunteers so everyone can get to the KN museum; and water taxi (ask Bonnie Kincaid or Joan Hoyt or the Hoffmans).see Marnie. May 6, Sunday, 11-4, is the Archaeology Festival at Iron Hill Museum, 1355 Old Baltimore Pike, Newark. The Old school house is getting cleaned, painted, and cases refreshed, in preparation for sharing the regional black history and iron mining. Again, please consider volunteering to man a table at this event. We will have the table and tent space provided there is no exhibit fee. We finally are getting close to working on their miniatures while this major refurbishment takes place. If you have any schoolhouse related items from the 20s through 1965, such as bell, books, pen-ink bottles, old wood school desks we would love the donation as we plan to showcase that original classroom space. Bonnie Kincaid has forebears from the region and has shared that. BIRTHDAYS : Happy Birthday!! Enjoy your special day! And Many Mini more!
