SCENIC HILLS Christian Serving & Osceola Community Homes and Services Newsletter Volume Collaboration between CCHS & High School a success! by Shelly DeStasio, Customer Relation & Volunteer Coordinator Earlier this summer, the High School program coordinator, Robin Rivard, approached me with an idea for a program that she wanted to put into motion: The High School Access Program, which is a work-based, learning program for students. Throughout the summer, the two of us brainstormed to create this important and supportive initiative a program that would benefit everyone involved including our residents! The guiding principles behind this program are that it is inclusive and integrated in the community, it promotes membership and contribution to society and it promotes independence and financial stability. The also benefits employers by providing highly trained, reliable people for the work force. The purpose of the is to provide real-life, hands-on, work opportunities to help students attain gainful employment in the future. The students started working in a variety of areas at CCH shortly after school started. They were asked to fill out applications and, from those, were matched to a variety of jobs based on their interests and strengths. There are currently 13 students working at CCH. Some of the jobs offered at CCH are in dining services, dishwashing/kitchen, beauty salon, grounds care, laundry and mail delivery. The students are supervised by a job coach from the high school as they learn the different skills needed for their jobs. They also have an employment seminar class at the high school before they come to CCH, whereby they are taught a variety of skills they will need to successfully obtain and maintain employment in the future. We are now two months into the program and have seen great success overall, and we have already hired two of the students for permanent positions. That s not to say, as with any new venture, there haven t been a few bumps in the road, but it is great to see that all who are involved see the value of this program and are dedicated to it becoming a place where students can gain independence and financial stability as they graduate from high school to become indispensable members of our community.

FOUNDATION REPORT by Judy Freund, Foundation Chair Happy Fall! It s hard to believe that it s that time of the year yet again. The CCC Foundation has so much to be thankful for this past year. The support that we receive from our CCHS family, friends and community is simply amazing! Our Osceola campus held their annual givebig campaign Riding on & Living Strong in April with their goal set to purchase a NuStep recumbent cross trainer. This new piece of equipment will allow more residents to benefit from the total body workout that these machines provide. The CCC Foundation pledged to match up to $3000 in donations received on this one day of giving, and we are happy to say they met their goal and our CCHO residents are riding on and living strong! In July, the foundation geared up for their annual Sunset & Starlight River Cruise that was held on the Majestic Star in Stillwater. We would first like to thank our major sponsors: Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren, Community Living Solutions, M3 Insurance, Hospital & Have you seen our mobile billboard? Thank you to all who donated to our Wheels for Wellness Campaign! The residents and staff love their new ride! Clinic, Physicians, Osceola Medical Center, Health Direct Pharmacy Services, Lancaster Pollard and over 80 community businesses. Because of their support and a record breaking attendance of over 200 friends and family, we were able to raise over $14,000 that will allow the foundation to continue to enhance the quality of life for the residents and engage in efforts to support the staff in their service to those living in our facilities. As 2017 comes to an end, we encourage you to think about ways to sustain the work of Christian Community Homes by supporting the CCH Foundation with a tax-deductible contribution. Or, consider leaving a legacy in your will or trust that will benefit residents and programming in years to come. If you have any questions regarding a will or trust, contact your financial advisor. Thank you for what you do to support the CCC Foundation. Feel free to come and go as your schedule allows. Gillian has been hired to work in Dining Services at CCH Food safety reminders whe by Sheryl Rust, CCHS Dietitian Keeping food safe before it arrives: Remember to wash your hands frequently while preparing food, as this is the most effective way to kill germs. Refrain from touching ready-to-eat foods with your bare hands please use utensils or waxed paper instead. If you are sick, wait 72 hours after your last symptom before handling food you bring in. Keep cold food cold and hot food hot, especially during preparation and transport of food. Stay out of the danger zone (keep cold food at 41 F or below and hot food at 135 F or above as temperatures in between grow harmful bacteria rapidly). Remember the two-hour rule. Any perishable food that is sitting out for more than two hours at room temperature should be discarded. Once food is in the facility: Cover, label and date all food received in the facility by family/visitors must be tightly covered and labeled with the resident s name, room number and the date brought in. We provide the labels, pens and containers if you need them. Just ask! HELPFUL HINTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS DECORATING Due to fire regulations no live trees, garland, wreaths or swags can be inside the facilities. If you wish to decorate in your resident s room, it must be artificial greens. CARDS AND GIFTS Please share this with all your family members and friends who may send cards or gifts to your resident for the holidays. Please put the resident s name inside the card as residents often want to share with others the beautiful cards they receive, and then they are left in common areas and we have no idea 4 SCENIC HILLS NEWSLETTER

OSCEOLA CAMPUS NEWS We would like to welcome Kimber Hays, a recent hire as the Director of Nursing for the Osceola campus. Her work history includes being a hospital medical/ surgical nurse right out of nursing school. From there, she moved to labor and delivery for several years. Then she was in clinic nursing where she worked closely with doctors and provided patient education. She then decided to make her own schedule and joined a pool agency where she was first exposed to long-term care. This is where she started teaching CNA classes for the next six years. Following that, she was in hospice work, helping n bringing in food: If the food is shelf stable, it may be kept in the resident s room, but must first be covered and marked with resident s name and date brought in. If the food is perishable, each building has a refrigerator/freezer designated for residents use. Food that is not covered, labeled or dated will be discarded. Perishable food that has been opened/leftovers may be kept for three days and then will be discarded. Foods that are unopened may be kept within the manufacturer best if used by dates. Stored foods may be reheated only once and then will be discarded. Staff is able to help assist with safe preparation and reheating of foods for consumption. Ask if you need a microwave-safe plate/bowl. Ideas to consider: Bring in only enough food for one meal and take any leftover food home with you. Portion foods in small batches and bring in one portion at a time when you visit. Important Notice: For the safety of other residents, please do not offer/give food that you have brought to other residents, besides your loved one, without first checking with a nurse. Thank you. patients and their families in their homes and in a variety of different facilities from AL to SNF. From there, she became the DON of a TCU in St. Paul and has finally made her way to CCH. She obtained her nursing degree at WITC and took satellite classes through Viterbo University out of La Crosse to work toward her Bachelor s Degree. She realizes she will perform the normal DON duties, but an additional goal is to successfully support the nursing staff to insure they feel valued. Together with the staff, she also hopes to enrich the lives of our residents and their families by creating a cohesive environment. She is married with four daughters. The oldest teaches in Florida and will be moving to England in May with her fiancé when he is transferred. Her second is happily married and living in Cottage Grove where she has three stepchildren and two children with her husband. Her third just graduated from high school this last year and is attending college in La Crosse. Her baby is a junior in high school and is active in studio dance, dance team, the Miss Amery royalty and band, which keeps them all very busy. They have two, very spoiled, very large (90 and 105 pounds) chocolate labs that they love a ton! In their free time, her and her husband love to ride motorcycle; they head to Sturgis bike week every fall. Their 16-year-old just bought a motorcycle this summer, so they love heading out with her on a nice day as well. A fun unknown fact.kimber is a jokester and loves to play little pranks on people. Don t be surprised if you come to work and your station/office is wrapped in holiday paper. Several of our CNAs were in her classes over the years, so she already knows some faces, and she certainly appreciates how welcoming the staff at CCH has been to her. OMC Vendor & Craft Fair Thursday, November 9 th 9:00 AM 3:30 PM OMC Conference Room which resident is Grandma. Also gifts, not just clothing, but books, pictures, boxes of candy, lotion, perfume, etc. should be labeled with the resident s name so they do not get lost. HOLIDAY GATHERINGS If you are interested in reserving a space on either campus for a family gathering during the holidays, please call to reserve the space. This is done on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited on both campuses. In, contact Deb Tonsager at and in Osceola contact Karyl Johnson at HOLIDAY MEAL RESERVATIONS - If you wish to dine with your resident at either campus for a holiday meal (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year) please make a reservation at least 48 hours in advance. For holidays, we do have to limit the number of guests allowed to two guests per resident and also have a limited number of total guests at each facility, so the sooner you make a reservation the better as the spaces may fill quickly. To make these reservations at CCH- call Jenni Matz at , for Pine Ridge call Brenda Magadanz at , for WinterGreen call Kathy O Connell at To make reservations in Osceola call Karyl Johnson at VOLUME

ACTIVITY ALLEY HUDSON by Deb Tonsager, Therapeutic Recreation Manager/Music Therapist Lucille Spinden with her family and friends Gerry P and Irene G representing CCH in the Pepper Fest parade I had a group of residents gathered for a chit chat session and I asked them to help me reminisce about the past three months of programming here at CCH. I told them that I was writing an article for our upcoming newsletter article about Scenic Hills and I wanted their input. One resident said, You expect us to remember way back to July?, while another one laughed and said just write, It was all A+! My responses were, Yes, let s help each other remember, and No, Gerry, the article needs to be longer than It was all A+! After quite a bit of laughter, we began reminiscing about the good times that we have had. The residents talked about the entertainment that has come through their doors and the parties that have taken place. It was fun to talk about our gardens and how many tomatoes and peppers we harvested. They said that they enjoyed the yummy cream cheese salsa that we made and how we should open our own salsa shop. One of the highlights mentioned was the 2017 Pepper Fest Parade. This year we had our King and Queen of Hearts participating. King Gerry Peterson and Queen Irene Gonitzke did a wonderful job representing CCH as our 2017 Royalty! I believe that Irene practiced her parade wave for days before the parade. Mary Van Allen being scolded by Irene Gonitzke during baking We would like to thank Swanee, George Johnston and Dave DeRosier for finding the perfect car for Gerry and Irene to ride Irene Gonitzke and her family in. It was a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Convertible. Our residents have had many opportunities to celebrate these past few months. We have had the blessing of celebrating the birthdays of several of our residents including three who are 100+ years old. We had a 100th birthday party for Alvina Kirchner, a 101st party for Irene Gonitzke and a 102nd party for Lucille Spinden! Isn t it amazing to have so many centurions in one place? Another highlight touched on was the amazing ice cream and bus trip. Several of them had the opportunity of going across the new St. Croix River Bridge, and then we headed to Nelson s Dairy Store in Stillwater, MN. It was a beautiful day for a drive and a bit of ice cream well, more than a bit really, as Nelson s doesn t skimp on their scoops. Dale Knutson found that out quickly. Everyone on the bus ordered a child-sized cup of ice cream, but he ordered a double scoop! The residents have been working hard on our upcoming Craft and Bake Sale items. The baking and craft groups have been well attended and we have all had a great deal of fun! Everyone is excited for the sale. We hope that you will be attending on Nov. 17th and 18th. See page 4 for details. Happy 100th birthday, Alvina 6 SCENIC HILLS NEWSLETTER

AUXILIARY NEWS by Shelly DeStasio, Customer Relations & Auxiliary Liaison Our CCC Auxiliary would like to thank everyone who has supported them throughout this past year! It has been an exciting one with a lot going on. The Memorial Garden at CCH was revitalized with the new pergola (with the donations from our 2016 Garden Jubilee), a new handicap accessible picnic table and two new benches. Taylor, an area Girl Scout, came to us this spring wanting to earn her gold award at CCH. She decided to take this project under her wing and raised money to add her touches to the garden. She also made garden stones with the residents that are placed throughout the garden. The results are beautiful! If you get a chance, stop by the solarium and see it! We are also thankful for the beautiful weather we had for ALL three of our concerts outside this summer! As you can see by the pictures, an amazing time was had by all! It brings such joy to our Auxiliary to see the interaction between our residents, their family members and all the other community friends that attend and support this great event! September marked our last event of 2017, the annual tea party; the residents enjoy all the awesome tea sandwiches and cookies the Auxiliary makes for them! It is a great opportunity for family to come and visit and reminisce about the old days. Please Note: there will be a date change for this event next year. It will be on Saturday, May 12th (Mother s Day weekend). Mark your calendars now so you don t miss it! Pretty soon the snow will be flying and we will be getting ready to plan our annual luau to be held on January 20 th at 2:00 PM. We hope you will join us as we enjoy sweet tastes of the Caribbean and do a little hula! 8 Don Pederson enjoys a beautiful night sitting in the garden and listening to music ACTIVITY ALLEY PINE RIDGE by Brenda Magadanz, Director of Pine Ridge It was a good summer at Pine Ridge. The residents enjoyed sitting outside in the nice weather. They loved the monthly Concerts in the Garden. We checked out the new St. Croix crossing bridge and went to lunch at Joseph s in Stillwater. It was pretty impressive. Now we are busy working on crafts for the Craft and Bake Sale in November. It seems like summer just flew by. PINE RIDGE GARDENS by Brenda Magadanz, Director of Pine Ridge The great outdoors is where we spent every moment we possibly could. We are so blessed to have such a beautiful garden area to sit in and breathe in the fresh air. We continued our weekly baking group, making seasonal treats such as strawberry shortcake, blueberry cobbler and apple crisp. Now we are gearing up for the holiday seasons that are fast approaching. 9 ACTIVITY ALLEY WINTERGREEN by Jenny Brazzale, WinterGreen Assistant WinterGreen residents enjoyed a wonderful summer. A fun outing that the residents planned was a fishing trip through the organization Let s Go Fishing. The Let s Go Fishing organization provides free fishing trips to seniors over 55. They provide the boat, gear, bait and everything else needed for fishing. The residents had a wonderful time on the beautiful St. Croix River. Later in the summer, the residents also took a quick trip to the Farmer s Market. Nothing beats the flavor of fresh produce from the garden! A new support group was formed at WinterGreen over the summer as well. After having Al Thompson, a Rehabilitation Specialist for the blind, speak at a recent Talk of the Hour program, residents were eager to start a low vision support group. This monthly group meeting is for people who are blind or visually impaired at WinterGreen, as well as in the community. It s a great opportunity for residents to talk about their vision changes as well as gain important resources to help them with their own vision concerns. WinterGreen residents recently had the chance to Rita and Roy Giudice relax in the gardens during the Concert in the Garden Series at CCH get to know the new director of Dining Services, Kim Drexl. Kim has a food forum where she comes to WinterGreen once a month to meet with the residents in the library. The Marlene Doran, Donna Christensen, Janis Halverson and Audrey Larson show off their hats during the annual Auxiliary Tea Party at CCH Don and June Waalen take a break from singing during the Concert in the Garden Series at CCH food forum is a great way for residents to share any thoughts, questions, praise or concerns they may have with the food served here. It s been a great way to keep communication open between the residents and dietary staff. Another new program added to the afternoon activities is called You Be the Judge. This program is based on real court cases from around the world. The group meets in the library and is presented with a case. Then, they become the jury and give their opinions on how the case should be decided. After some lively discussion as a group, it s revealed how the actual case turned out. As in the past, this year s WinterGreen bake sale was a huge success. The committee did a great job of getting the word out about the sale as well as finding residents and staff willing to donate delicious baked goods. The sale sold out and the proceeds will go to local charities voted on at the end-of-year Resident Association meeting. We are also getting ready for the CCH Craft and Bake Sale and will be working on our own crafts to donate to CCH again this year. Shirley and Dick Johannsen enjoy themselves during the Concert in the Garden Series at CCH There is still plenty of autumn to look forward to at WinterGreen. For Halloween, the residents are planning a potluck. There are always activities to participate in and trips to take, which contribute to making WinterGreen a great place to live! VOLUME

ACTIVITY ALLEY OSCEOLA by Tia Erickson, Therapeutic Recreation/Volunteer Manager Debbie Heidel Farm Fun Fair One peeling per apple Osceola Wings Air Show Dick B talking motors at the auto show It s been a fun-filled summer going out and about with CCHO and Hearthside Assisted Living for local community events like the Farm Fun Fair, three Vintage Auto Shows, Country Garden Tour & Tea, three fishing trips, several BBQs and we watched the Wings and Wheels Air Show! It is always a treat to get to see Sue DeMenge s and Carrie Brannon s farm animals. This year Debbie Heidel, HUC, supplied the fun by making special games with prizes for all ages. Bernie Beyl s family (Cindy and Roger), topped off this Farm Fair by driving an antique tractor for us! The men s families and friends joined us again this year in June for our annual BBQ and Vintage Auto Show. It became so popular with the community that Betty holding a kitten on the we added two more auto shows, both of which Garden Tour have grown in popularity! Sue DeMenge invited us out to her Country Cottage for a garden tour and tea with her children and week-old kittens! The weather has also been great for our fishing trips with Sherman Pettis. We even caught five different species of fish on one trip! Unfortunately, there were no keepers for the grill, though many have enjoyed grilled hot dogs and burgers this summer! A highlight was watching the Osceola Wings Air Show, which was ideal from our location next door to the airport. We raised herbs and veggies again this year and made delicious salads and dips. The first crop of apples from the orchard planted four years ago by a volunteer was harvested, and we made homemade apple pies! Residents proved their peeling skills creating only one piece of peel per apple with a paring knife or peeler!! The pies were served warm with ice cream at an afternoon social at the special request of the residents. Soon the holidays will be here, so we are preparing homemade crafts and goodies to sell at the annual OMC Vendor Fair. We will have Thanksgiving Day services and Christmas events with family and friends like the Christmas Cottage and Lights Display Outing complete with Mrs. Claus elves who serve us homemade cookies and hot cocoa! We have several special guests who come around the holidays including an appearance this year by Elvis at our Valentine s Celebration! Apple pies ready to serve Ken Keen outside with his family Sherman Pettis caught five species of fish Bernie Beyl s family tractor 10 SCENIC HILLS NEWSLETTER
