School Happenings Culver School Mrs. Peggie Maniscalco Principal Leaving You Is So Hard To Do! Goodbye! That word seems so final. So what is the right word to use as I leave? How do I say farewell to the people who have been a big part of my world for the last 18 years? How do I begin to share with you all the adventures and learning that have taken place? Before I leave I need to tell you that I have learned so much from all of you along this journey. I have learned that things aren t always as they appear, and that there are always at least two sides to every story. I have learned that passion for things is an important attribute, but one needs to be prepared for both the positive and negative sides of passion. I have witnessed many selfless acts from many selfless individuals. I have seen many random acts of kindness for people in situations of need. I have been fortunate enough to experience not only older individuals assist younger people with difficult tasks, but I have also watched the youngest child teach the most learned person to see the simplicity of a situation. I now know that as individuals we are all gifts, as we share diverse and powerful attributes with others. I became a teacher with the aspiration of making a difference in the lives of those I taught, I can only hope that I was able to help some grow along the way. What I didn t expect being an educator was how much I would learn along the way. Thank you for all that you have taught me, and the joy you have brought me. Please know that I have had the time of my life, I couldn t have wished for anything more. This is the truth and I owe it all to the Culver families and staff. I wish only the best for my Culver family and for your continued success. I will be back to visit and while I am away I will miss you all. So it is not Goodbye but rather til I see you next time. 2 Kathy Morrissey School Nurse Lice is a common occurrence in school. From the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), In the United States, infestation with head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) is most common among preschool- and elementary school-age children and their household members and caretakers. Head lice are not known to transmit disease. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) reports that Having head lice does not mean you are dirty. Most people get head lice when they have head-to-head contact with someone who has head lice. Head-to-head contact lets the lice crawl from one head to another head. The lice do not care whether the person has squeaky-clean hair or dirty hair. The lice are looking for human blood, which they need to survive. Head lice may also be transferred from shared clothing or belongings onto which lice have crawled or nits attached to shed hairs may have fallen, though this is much less common. The CDC provides these guidelines to prevent and control the lice infestation. Additionally, children should be taught to avoid activities that spread head lice: Avoid head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact during play and other activities at home, school, and elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties, camp). Do not share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, or barrettes. Do not share combs, brushes, or towels. Disinfest combs and brushes used by an infested person by soaking them in hot water (at least 130 F) for 5-10 minutes. Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person. Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items that an infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130 F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry -cleaned OR sealed in a plastic bag and stored for 2 weeks. Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay. However, spending much time and money on housecleaning activities is not necessary to avoid reinfestation by lice or nits that may have fallen off the head or crawled onto furniture or clothing. Do not use fumigant sprays or fogs; they are not necessary to control head lice and can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin As a precaution, all parents should spend at least fifteen minutes every week checking school aged children for lice. If you find lice or active nits (eggs), please consult your healthcare provider about safe lice treatment options and recommendations. If you are uncertain if your child has lice, your healthcare provider can determine if your child has lice or active nits. Lice spread easily and are a nuisance but they are not dangerous. They do not spread disease. Prevention and early detection/treatment of lice are essential to controlling infestations. Removal of lice and nits is important in control of infestation and reinfestation. 4 Kathy Morrissey School Nurse 05/2018 As we close out the school year please note that for those students who have medications in the Health Office, all medications must be picked up by the last day of school. Any medications not picked up will be destroyed immediately. Looking ahead, please remember to have your healthcare provider complete a Medication Authorization form over the summer for the school year if your child will require any medications including over the counter medication while at school. A Medication Authorization must also be completed for asthma inhalers and epinephrine auto-injectors carried by students while at school. Students who may need rescue medication such as epinephrine auto-injectors, asthma inhalers, or medication for seizures should have their healthcare provider complete an emergency action plan such as the Illinois Department of Public Health Asthma Action Plan, Illinois Food Allergy Emergency Action Plan and Treatment Authorization or the Epilepsy Foundation Seizure Action Plan. Emergency Action Plans preferred by the healthcare provider will also be accepted. Students with known allergies and asthma are urged to review with their healthcare provider the need for medication at school and should also request that necessary emergency action plan(s) be completed for school. Health forms will be available the Culver School Office. Please contact the health office at extension 1118 with any questions or concerns.

12 The Niles 71 website now features a resources page! As we teach our children to ask for help when they need it, we also encourage families to ask for help when they need it. To support our mission of developing the whole child, Niles 71 is providing a list of resources for parents to access as needed. 13 Partnering with the PTA Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels Every year PTA collects Box Tops and Campbell s Soup Labels. Last year we raised money for Culver School on those tiny icons on many of your favorite foods. At home, clip the Box Tops and Campbell s Soup Labels. Please send them to school with your child and we will take care of the rest. Did you know that Goldfish Crackers are part of the Campbell s Soup Label family? Next time before you put that package in the trash or recycling bin, check to see if it has a Box Top or Campbell Soup Label on it. Those points add up to FREE $$$ for our school.
