So much is happening --- sports, Homecoming, the bonfire, trunk-or-treat, Dress-O-S --- students have so many opportunities to take a break from academics to celebrate their Tiger community. October is going to be a blast! We just completed our first conferences and had approximately 70% of parents attend. That number is awesome and we hope to see it grow. Although it feels like the older kids get the less they need their parents, the opposite is actually true. We realize that we may have the opportunity to see students for more time in a day than parents can, but it doesn't change the fact that parents remain the biggest influence in their student's life. Coming to conferences, volunteering your time for the school, ing a teacher, asking your student specifics about their school day are all actions that demonstrate the importance you place on school and your child notices. They may seem like little things, but that small investment brings massive dividends. It's never too late to start! I'd like to take a minute to point out what a strong, professional, student-focused staff the Ontario community has at OHS. Administration has the unique opportunity to regularly visit classrooms. Watching our teachers at work and the interactions they have with our students leaves no mystery as to their passion --- student success. To have sometimes 150 students a day who depend on you to be not only their teacher, but to be consistent, fair, prepared, sensitive, patient, understanding and be interested in them and their uniqueness is a tall order. Our teachers make the hardest job in the world look easy and administration realizes every day how fortunate we are to support such a dedicated staff. Super proud of them. As we move through this month, I challenge you to look for one opportunity to "plug in" to OHS. Maybe you can call us for extended or one-time volunteer opportunities. Maybe you participate in the Trunk-or Treat. Maybe you come to a game in your Cardinal and Corn gear to support our teams... a teacher to ask how your student is doing... me with suggestions for this newsletter... donate needed items... or maybe you just like our Facebook page at We welcome and encourage it all! OHS is having a fantastic start to our fall season and we wish the same for you. Go Tigers! 2 Mrs. Johnston-Carston Mrs. Johnston-Carston has taught in the Ontario School District for 24 years, but prior to that she served the Ontario community in a variety of ways through the Ontario Recreation Department. Directly out of high school, she taught pre-school and various summer classes for Ontario. The classes included some fun field biology trips with small children and many other adventures in art and science. As soon as she earned her Bachelors of Science at EOU, She began teaching at Ontario Middle School. While teaching, she continued her education with night and summer classes in order to earn her Master's Degree. Since then, she has accumulated other graduate credits in a variety of science topics such as Bioethics, Genetics, and Ecology. She definitely has a passion for science, and is dedicated to inspiring young minds to think, reason, and find a passion for learning! All of her years with 8-C School District have included some form of science. Currently, she is teaching Honors Biology, Advanced Biology, and Zoology. She has also taught dual credit classes for TVCC and teaches a lab class on TVCC campus one night a week. College, College, College... does your senior know what they're doing after Ontario High School? By this time they should have begun piecing together their next step in life and we're here to help! Right now the Student Services department is helping them make there plans with the follow activities: Senior Meetings: Mr. Kilzer and Mr. DeWitt have begun meeting with every senior individually to review their graduation requirements, discuss their post graduation plans and to point out resources they can access to help with both! FAFSA Completion Week: If your student's plan includes some type of continued education (from a community college to university) it will come with a price tag and the FAFSA is the first step in how to pay for it! Even if they're not certain what their plans are they should fill it out just in case! During the week of October 10th through 14th Mrs. Figueroa and Mr. Paulsen will assist all students with completing their FAFSA. PSAT: All Sophmores will take the PSAT on October 19th. Seniors are invited to take it if they wish to practice for the SAT. Juniors who take it may be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship if they score in the top percentiles. Interested Juniors and Seniors should sign up with Mrs. Alexander. Border College Fair: All Juniors and Seniors will be attending the Border College Fair at the 4-Rivers Community center. This is an excellent opportunity to explore their post-graduation options. Jon Kilzer School Counselor Ontario HS (541) Ext: 1085 OHS COMMENDED STUDENTS IN THE 2017 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Benjamin C. Hart and Katrina A. Gering have been named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2017 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success, commented a spokesperson for NMSC. These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success. Ontario High School is extremely proud of your accomplishment and celebrates this recognition of the bright future ahead of you. 2

3 Currently, in leadership we are getting ready to put on one of the biggest school activities of the year: homecoming. The theme for this year s homecoming will be The Roaring 20 s. We have split up into six different groups to help divide the work. Recently, we had our first student senate meeting where Alioz Mason was elected as a junior class officer and Dallon Johnston as the new ASB Treasurer. We are excited for them to be members of our team. The Junior and Senior concessions are getting ready to come to an end as the volleyball season is coming to a close. It was a good experience and we are all grateful for Dr. Elizondo who made it possible for us to have a new concession booth. Lastly, we had a very successful first pep assembly encouraging students to go support the football players at our first home game. We included the band, choir, and all fall sport players as well as random students to play different games. Your Ontario Tiger Marching Band and Colorguard placed first in their division at their first competition of the year at Caldwell High School. The band also scored highest in its class in Music Performance and Overall Effect. Also competing in Ontario's class were bands from Homedale, Mountain Home, Bishop Kelly, Jerome, and Marsing. This year, the band is performing a show entitled "A Walk Through Wonderland" with music arrangements from The Police, ColdPlay and The Doors. OHS Senior Katie Gering developed the colorguard choreography as well as an adaptation of the storyline. The band will perform at OHS Varsity Football games, and at two more competitions at Vallivue (Oct. 15), and Parma (Oct. 17) Jamie Jacobson, Voice Professor at Eastern Oregon University, will give a masterclass on October 5 for some outstanding OHS singers. Students in Dr. Longwell's Voice Class have been working hard to prepare a solo song for the event and then perform that song by memory. This will be a wonderful opportunity to perform and receive encouragement and feedback from a college faculty member! DANCE Date: Oct. 22nd Time: 8:45-11:45 Cost: $20/couples, $15/single Where to buy: Tables at lunch (Will be announced) Theme: Roaring Twenties BONFIRE When: Oct. 21st following the football game until 11:00 or when the fire burns out Where: At the tennis courts Who: OHS students only Cost: Free! 3

4 Drama Club is ramping things up in its third year here at Ontario High School! With over 20 members, Drama Club is made up of students who like to balance lots of fun with a good challenge, pushing themselves mentally and physically to produce the best of comedy, tragedy, and everything in between. This year our productions include Twelve Angry Jurors (November 18th and 19th) and Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing (Spring Semester). Twelve Angry Jurors is about the final deliberations of a jury after a six-day murder trial. A 19-year old boy has been accused of stabbing his father in the chest, and his life is in the hands of twelve people with short tempers and a lot to fight about. Much Ado About Nothing is a Shakespearean romantic comedy where the main characters specialize in throwing shade each other s way, but fall in love despite their best intentions. In addition to plays, Drama club also puts on various improv shows throughout the year. Like us on Facebook at facebook.com/ontariodrama to stay up to date on upcoming performances. FFA participated in Soil Judging on September 28th and they had a blast! The beginning team placed 2nd in the district, and Harlee Parson placed 4th overall individual.
