Box 7584 Klamath Falls, Or SOUTHERN OREGON HORSE AND CARRIAGE CLUB March 30, 2018 SOHACC didn't have a business meeting in March so there are no minutes to present. We held an activity meeting at 3 Hats Training Center in Worden. The weather was not conducive to driving or riding, so members and drivers came for a Cabbage Classic feast on St. Patrick's Day. The hearty souls who braved the cold cold wind got a great meal and watched training videos and played with the reinboard. Come Drive With US!! The Packing Expo is coming! SOHACC needs volunteers! Call Rick or Renee Rose at Your club needs you. There will be sign ups for the Packing Expo booths and activities at our general meeting. 3 Mardi Gras Flambeau Wagon! You do not have to go to Mardi Gras to feel the traditions of New Orleans but it can t hurt! One of those traditions includes the carrying of the flambeau or flambeaux if you have more than one. The tradition began in 1857, Fat Tuesday. Originally the flambeaux were made of staves wrapped with rags soaked in fuel and were used to light the parade route. Free men of color and slaves carried the flambeau, prancing, waving the torches and twirling them. Some performances became so exciting (not to mention dangerous) the crowd would throw coins to the marchers. As artificial lights were invented, the tradition simply became tradition because what s a celebration without fire? The modern flambeaux are outfitted with slightly safer natural gas globes with trays and backsplashes. Our interest, of course, relates to the flambeaux wagon that carries the torches to the parade route. Research shows the wagons, very long beds with small wheels, were originally used for hauling cotton bales. A torch-holding frame was added and it became a flambeau wagon.
