TRICKS OF THE TRADE A FEW HELPFUL HINTS NOT FROM HELOUISE Steve Pitts, RRT, EMT-P DISCLAIMER Hints are meant to help in your day-to-day operations. None are meant to supercede or alter your local protocols, practices or accepted methods of caring for patients. Check with your local medical control, management and/or training personnel to make sure these will be accepted in your practice. Never try something new without checking with the proper authorities. THE EVER POPULAR, VERY VERSATILE, OFTEN LOST: CARABINER CARABINER: A metal loop with a sprung or screwed gate. The loop part opposite of the gate is referred to the spine. It can quickly and reversibly connect components in safety-critical systems. The word comes from karabinerhaken meaning hook for carbine in German*. *WIKIPEDIA Also known as a D ring in the foreign language of climbers. So called because of its shape, it has many uses outside of the climbing realm. Also called a biner, with absolutely no ethnic bias or insult intended. 1
TWO BASIC TYPES NON-LOCKING Features a gate that can easily be opened; solid metal or wire LOCKING Features a metal gate that has a screw or springloaded lock that prevents the gate from opening without unscrewing or activating the locking mechanism. MANY DIFFERENT SIZES MANY DIFFERENT COLORS AND STYLES The uses are only limited by your imagination and the ability to improvise. 2
Make sure that the anchor points you are using are able to handle the load. Ensure that you can get the articles undone easily and safely. THE INFAMOUS IV FLUID HANGER 3
4
Again make sure the anchor point can handle the load. Make sure the load is safe and secure. Adding a key ring adds many options to the places you can use the device. You can NEVER have too many biners Clip them to the loops on your spider straps for easier attachment to the backboard. Clip one with a strap to the end of a backboard to lower it down the steps, instead of carrying it. Use them to attach soft restraints together. Use them to attach restraints to the stretcher. Organize your scissors/hemostats Any ideas or suggestions???? Keep track of your hat, water bottle or whatever. 5
And now a word from one of our fabulous sponsors Is your Velcro looking a little tired worn out nappy? Does it resemble something used to clean out from under the beds in your sleep rooms? Make your Velcro good as new with this simple device Available at your local pet or hardware store very inexpensive and very effective 6
A BIT OF TRIVIA: Simply brush in one direction and the brush will easily remove most foreign debris beats the cost of a seamstress and replacement. Velcro was invented in 1941 by a hunter. Returning from the field he put the small burs that collected on his dog and himself under a microscope. He noticed the hooks that protruded from the bur became entangled in the fur of his clothing and dog. This spawned the idea for the modern day Velcro. And introducing the lowly, seldom remembered, but always there to lend a helping hand THE PLASTIC BAG?? Again, here is another common item with many, many uses, only limited by your imagination and ingenuity. Poke a hole in it, slip it over the patient s head and it becomes a great emesis catcher. 7
This can also be reversed, put under the patient s head and it will help to catch all that blood from those pesky head wounds. While on the subject of head wounds, we all know how hard it is to secure Kling or Kerlex to a bowling ball on a stick By adding a half or full twist behind the occiput, this will help to anchor your bandaging effort and make it less likely to turn into a turban. This technique also works when applying a pressure dressing. Simply make your twists over the wound. This increases the pressure on the wound itself without impeding circulation in the entire limb. Now.Back to the plastic bag 8
The same idea thing can be accomplished by cutting the sealed end off of a heavy duty plastic bag the heavier, the better. The plastic bag can be put on before the patient remember they will sweat and they may move around more than normal. The idea is NOT to pull the plastic bag, but to let it roll as you move the patient. While we re on the subject, why do we always move the patient side to side? Is it just because it s the way that it has always been done? Wouldn t it be easier and safer for our backs to put the head of our stretcher at the foot of the other stretcher and move the patient longitudinally? 9
Especially if we are using a backboard, slider board or some other device no more leaning over, pulling, straining our backs and doesn t it seem like we always have to move the patient up or down in the bed anyway?????? DÉJÀ VU. ALL OVER AGAIN The same goes for cutting our patient s clothing about a year ago I suggested cutting the clothing in the back rather than the front. I have received a lot of positive feedback about doing it this way Clothing Removal The Usual way 5 cuts Clothing, debris, still under patient Have to move the patient in the Hospital for procedures The Scuba Steve Way 3 Cuts Only 1 if you only have to expose the top half of the patient Clothing and debris removed before the patient is placed on the board Can leave the front of the patient covered if you wish Much more comfortable 10
Test Questions Questions or comments? 1. Tricks of the Trade are only limited by: 2. Name the two types of carabiners. 3. How many cuts are necessary for the Scuba Steve method of clothing removal? SECRET QUESTION Where did the idea of Velcro come from? Questions? Contact: Carolyn Stovall Fax: Special thanks to Sheila Crow Stitchin Dreams Embroidery For providing our Secret Question prize 11
