Page1 2017: Volume 19 Guest Editor: Katherine Raymont I became involved in cricket in 1979 when I moved to Brisbane and having played in the backyard with my brothers, I had always had a dream of playing the game. Qld teams around this time consisted of players from the age of , and this was very hard for the younger players, and those girls often didn t stay long in the sport, which was disappointing as some of those girls were very good. Interstate games were played in the 1930 s and Qld had a team up until the late 1960 s. Women s cricket in Qld disbanded for a period and then reformed again in the 1970 s. Qld s Cath Smith was vice captain of the first Australian team that played England in a test in Brisbane at the Exhibition Grounds in 1934 and today female cricketers play for the Cath Smith Medal. It is awarded to the best female cricketer in the QC competition who play in the Katherine Raymont Shield (1 st grade). In Qld, Women s Cricket was played in the early 1900 s and in the nearly 40 years that I have been involved I am sure that the changes that have occurred in this time have been some of the biggest. The introduction of an underage Interstate competition in the mid- 1980s was a great step forward for the girls, and this gave the younger players a pathway which hadn t been there before. Today girls have U/12, U/15 and U/18 state championships that they can play in. Females played the game under the banner of the Qld Women s Cricket Association up until women s cricket became part of QC in the late

Page s. District Clubs in Brisbane were to try and have a women s team along with their men s teams, and the number of clubs having at least one team is continuing to grow. Most interstate women cricketers became part of their state men s associations before Cricket Australia became the body that ran the women s side as well at national level. Originally the Australian Women s Cricket Association was the governing body of women s cricket in Australia; it then had a name change to Women s Cricket Australia and now it is all is under CA. During the I made my debut for QLD, and became vicecaptain in , with the captaincy following the next season. I retained the captaincy until retirement from the interstate competition in During my career I won the state batting average award four times and was named QLD player of the year three times. During the QWCA era there was very little funding available for the sport and players would have to do their own fund raising to play at a championship which was held in a different State each year. Players would often have to pay their own way and to save money we would often travel by car to the championship. I remember driving to Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra during my state playing years. So to see how far it has come to where players are now contracted for amounts that allow players to be full time players is great and for the younger players to have the support of coaching and facilities to reach

Page3 dreams of being a professional woman cricketer are changes that can only see the game grow. Katherine keeping for QLD vs England Note the culottes that the girls are wearing Up until the early 2000 s we played in culottes and now you see the female players playing in long pants. This change was first made at Australian level during the late 1990 s when I was on the board of WCA ( ) because of a call by players to go away from playing in culottes in India due of the very dry grounds that the players were playing on. Any grazes received when diving would most likely become infected and thus they wanted protection from this happening. For me after making the Qld team and touring with them for a couple of years I had the dream that I wanted to play test cricket; fortunately I achieved my dream but today the young girls only have the opportunity to play a one off test against England which is part of an Ashes series that is made up of one test match, three one-dayers and three T20 s. I played in a three test series against New Zealand but there were some five test series played against England and India. Sadly these days are gone and with the increased popularity of the T20 s I doubt they will return.

Page4 Australia played New Zealand for the Shell Rose Bowl which consisted of three 50 over games as early as 1985 and every year in this format until Australia and NZ still play for the Shell Rose Bowl but often with a different format. I gained my three test caps in Australia s tour of NZ in 1990 where I opened the batting in all three tests, averaging 28.4 with a highest score of 47. When I played in the first test, I became the first QLD female to play for Australia in 34 years. In the three ODIs that followed, I became the first QLD female to play in an international ODI. Even though I was the Qld wicket keeper from 1983 till I retired I played for Australia only as an opening batter. and is still played along with the T20 World Cup. The Australian team is now known as the Southern Stars and an under 23 Australian Team is known as the Shooting Stars. Following my retirement, I served as a state selector for a decade and went on to manage many QLD under-age teams. As a club coach, I led Wests to titles in the second grade and the women s first grade competition, which was named the Katherine Raymont Shield. The Women s 50 over World Cup in 1974 was played before the men played their first world cup in 1975

Page5 The above photo is Katherine presenting her shield to the captain of Sandgate/Redcliffe, Courtney Hill, who just happens to be the granddaughter of Lockyer Div 2 player and resident comedian, Kenny Bennett. The opportunity for females to play the game of cricket is there for anyone who has a desire to play our sport and dreams can be fulfilled with plenty of hard work and dedication. As I have stepped away from coaching and with the opportunity to play some Veterans cricket it has given another insight to the game which for the male players is proving to be a big success but whether the women will take it on board will be interesting to see. Katherine was awarded Life Membership of QLD Cricket by Judge Sal Vasta at a ceremony on September 19 th. She became just the second female to be given that honour. This was an award and a reward richly deserved. Like many real achievers, Katherine is reluctant to talk at length about what she has done, but she is a Lockyer and QLD women s sports icon. Her male counterparts coming through the club system basically work their way through the system and if they do that well enough, they are often rewarded with some acknowledgement later in their careers. As in many sports, Katherine and her female counterparts often had to make the system before they could work their way through it. Katherine batting for Lockyer: My first contact with female cricketers was at Barry Knight s indoor Cricket Centre in Sydney in 1970, when the female version of the sport was more tolerated than supported. I played

Page6 against Katherine a couple of times in 1988 in Warehouse cricket and was impressed with her smooth upright batting style. In recent years I have spoken to girls whom Katherine has coached and she is regarded very highly. These girls share the pleasure of Katherine s award. Her mark on QLD women s cricket is indelible, and most sports administrators could only dream of what Katherine has achieved. Mike Nowlan Sound Advice! After a washed out practice session, an invitation was issued to anyone wanting to go for a coffee. On the agenda would be the aerodynamic influences of seam deterioration on the swinging ball and teething problems and the new LiveScore app no seriously!! A very experienced bowler quickly replied I have heard that using tighter jocks will help stop that swinging ball. ***************************************** Cricket History. Double hat-tricks in first class cricket. A double hat- trick is where two individual three wicket hat-tricks are taken in the same match. Eight double hat-tricks have been taken in the history of first class cricket in 140 years, two of them in Tests. According to the records in Wisden 1998 only 7 bowlers have performed the hattrick twice in the same first class match before. A. Shaw A. E. Trott T. J. Matthews C. W. L. Parker 1924 R. O. Jenkins J. S. Rao Amin Lakhani It is of special interest to remember that Albert Edwin Trott and J. S. Rao are the only two bowlers who have achieved the fantastic feat of taking two hattricks in an innings. These are achievements unparalleled to this day. In 1907, A. E. Trott played for Middlesex in a match against Somerset at Lord's. Trott bowling his sharp off breaks with clever change of pace took the wickets of Lewis, Poyntz, S. Woods and Robson with successive balls; four wickets in 4 balls. A hat-trick plus one. But, Trott did not stop at that. He struck again. He took the wickets of Mordaunt, Rev. Wickham and Bailey in 3 successive balls. Hence, Trott finished with two hat-

Page7 tricks in the same innings. A superb performance. He ended his bowling with an analysis of Trott was 40 years-old at that time. In November 1963, services bowler J. S. Rao made a fine debut in Ranjit Trophy cricket when he performed the hat-trick against Jammu and Kashmir in Delhi. But in the succeeding match against Northern Punjab at Amritsar, Rao's great double was achieved in the second innings. Rao created a record by securing a double hattrick in one inning. He came very close to performing a "Trott" because he took a hat-trick plus one wicket in 5 balls. The unique distinction of performing the hat-trick THREE TIMES in succession in one season, is an achievement unparalleled in the annals of cricket. Despite this remarkable feat, Rao never represented his country - India, in Test cricket. In tests, the feat of a double hat-trick was in 1912 by Australian T. J. Matthews who took two hat-tricks in a Test match against South Africa in the Triangular Contest with England, Matthews bowling his slow leg-breaks took the last three wickets (R. Beaument, S. J. Peglar and T. A. Ward) in the first innings with three successive balls to perform a hat-trick. When South Africa followed on the same day, Matthews repeated his performance by capturing the wickets of the famous H. W. Taylor, R. O. Shwarz and T. A. Ward - all in one day. His figures in the two innings were: wickets and wickets. What was astonishing - Matthews did not claim any wickets other than the three in each innings. He was 28 at that time. In March 1999 Wasim Akram achieved the feat of a hat trick in each of two consecutive Test matches, against Sri Lanka at Dhaka and Lahore. Alfred Shaw: Was 42 when he performed the double hat-trick in a match between Nottinghamshire and Gloucestershire in He was a medium pace bowler. Charles Parker: Was a left-arm bowler. Among his extraordinary feats for Gloucestershire was the double hat-trick against Middlesex in 1924 at the age 42. Roland Jenkins: Performed two hattricks against Surrey in He was a 32- year-old leg-break and googly bowler and played for England in 9 Tests. Amin Lakhani: A twenty-year-old Karachi University left-arm spinner played for Young Pakistanis XI against the Indians at Multan in October He performed a hat-trick in the first innings by

Page8 claiming the wickets of K. Ghauri, S. Venkatraghavan and B. Reddy and followed it up in the second innings by dismissing M. Amarnath, S. Kirmani and Kapil Dev in 3 successive balls. In spite of his remarkable performance of taking a double hat-trick, he never represented his country - Pakistan in Test cricket. ******************************* QLD over 70s 1 st Div side. They are participating in the first ever Over 70s National Championships. Previously these were part of the over 60s Nationals. As the England over 70s team is touring this year, Andy will be eyeing off a spot in one of the matches against them. ************************************* A Dog s Life Birthdays in November: Paul Smart, David Rueter, Brendan Rawiri. Trial matches October 8 th at Caloundra: Four Lockyer players, Mike McGovern, Darryl Ready, Nev Maroske and Mike Nowlan participated in these two matches. Collectively, they made four runs, with three of the players making ducks. Mike McGovern performed more credibly with the ball, getting lbw decisions on two consecutive deliveries, but failed to control the hat-trick ball. Nev Maroske also took one wicket. Trial matches at Maroochydore & Caloundra October 22 nd. These were called off because of the rain. ************************************* Andy Farley, Lockyer s only representative in Over 70s, is off to Adelaide as a member of the The best fed dog in cricket is driving to Canberra to check out the lunch time offerings there. Hopefully he won t leave any obstacle courses on the bowler s run-ups, like he did for one match at Ropehill.

Page9 Ready to drive ************************************* Seven Lockyer players have already left or will leave soon to travel to Canberra for the Nationals, from November 18 to 23. QLD has four sides in this tournament, and are the defending champions in Div 2 and Div 3. Mike McGovern is the manager of the Div 1 side, whilst Maurie Werth, as in Perth last year, is the captain of the Div 3 side. With him will be Darryl Ready, Nev Maroske, Paul Andrianatos, plus Andy Farley backing up from the over 70s tournament in Adelaide. Mike Nowlan is in Div 4, (mainly because there is no Div 5 side!) We wish them all safe journeys, good cricket and an enjoyable time whilst away. The first ever over 60s National Championship was held in Canberra in 2006 with one division was in Melbourne with two divisions was Melbourne again with two divisions was Launceston with two divisions and was the first time that Queensland entered a team was Canberra again with two divisions, QLD winning first div was Armidale with three divisions 2012 was Adelaide with three divisions and an over 70s division was Sunshine Coast with three divisions and over70s, QLD winning first div was Melbourne with four divisions and over 70s. QLD won over 70s was Hobart with four divisions and over 70s. QLD won first div was in Perth, with QLD entering teams in four over 60s divisions for the first time, plus two over 70s. QLD won second div, third div and over 70s. This year QLD has entered four over 60s sides again. GO Queensland!! Play hard, but remember to enjoy the team environment and the experience.****************
