(J) Hacker Hello everyone! It seems like we were just getting started and now another season of great bowling is winding down. I hope all of you participated in at least one of the Tournaments offered by the ISUSBC B this year. I am anxious to hear your comments in regards to having the Open Championship Tournament in one house. ick Hoagland and the Indy USBC ssociation did a good job in hosting this event. Great job all!!! The ISUSBC B State Senior s Singles Championship was held at Cooper s Sport Bowl in nderson. We had a great turn-out this year!! I hope this continues to grow. This tournament offers a chance for our more mature bowlers to compete with others in their own gender and age group. We always have fun at the Senior s!! Gene eal does an excellent job as Tournament Manager! I would also like to send a special thanks to Judy Barth and Charlie Wilkey for stepping in to help on the first day!! Your extra hands were greatly appreciated. I also want to thank the nderson USBC ssociation and staff of Cooper s Sport Bowl. You helped to make this another great tournament. Please plan on sending your delegates to the ISUSBC B nnual Meeting in June. It is so important that ssociations send a representative to take back information and to have your questions answered and your voice heard. Mileage is reimbursed for those delegates that attend. Check out the ISUSBC B Website for entries and information regarding the Scholarship Golf Tournament. This is another fun event that brings our bowlers together in a different venue. The good news is, it provides income for our 10 scholarships that are awarded to our outstanding youth bowlers throughout the state. Put a team together, join the fun, and help a very worthy cause. I would personally like to thank Kerry Caine, 1 st VP for accepting to complete the term of our President, John Brothers due to his untimely death. Our prayers remain with John s family. I know that Kerry will do a fine job in his unexpected roll. Thanks again! It was great to see you at the tournaments and events throughout the state! Our bowlers are the greatest!!!! Till next time, take care, bowl well and above all, have fun! 3nd Vice-President Mary Utley has been an unusual year for Indiana bowlers. We have experienced fun, frustration, joy, and grief. The fun of the 2014 Jamboree and all tournaments; frustration of a very hard winter for much of the state; joy of bowling with our friends, family, and fellow bowlers; and the grief of losing a dear bowling friend and board officer with the passing of President John Brothers. lthough we miss him, I think John would want us to continue our efforts to serve our bowlers and further the sport he loved. Many thanks to 1 st Vice President Kerry Caine for so aptly stepping up to fill the void President Brothers left. s District 8 Director, Interim President (then 2 nd Vice President) Caine s input and support were a tremendous help to me. I look forward to serving as vice president under his leadership. Congratulations to Rick Schultz and Charles Wilkey for conducting a very successful Open Tournament! Larry Owens did a great job and left big shoes to fill. Rick and Charley did just that. I look forward to attending District 9 Director Dale Bennington s meeting on June 13 th! Speaking of June don t forget the IS USBC B Scholarship Golf Scramble on June 27 th, Hall of Fame and Presidents Recognition Dinner the evening of June 27 th, and the nnual Delegates Meeting on Sunday, June 28 th. Details can be found on the website at indianausbc.org. Hope to see you there! Wishing you strikes and spares.

We had another great turn out at both the Senior Open Championship in nderson and Open Championship in Indianapolis. It was great to see so many familiar faces and a few new ones to our events this year. During the weekend, we will be inducting 3 new members to the Hall of Fame, Jerry Harvey, nthony Peterson, and Randy Robertson. I hope that you will join us in what is always a great event. Wrapping up the weekend will be the nnual Delegate Meeting for the IS USBC B. This will be a special meeting for myself because it will be my final board meeting as I will not be running for the District One Director position for the term starting on ugust 1, During my 4 years serving on the IS USBC B Board of Directors, I can say it has been a great experience filled with new friends and very special times that I will always cherish. There are too many names to list everyone who has had a great impact on my life and growth as a board member but I do want to name 4 individuals who have meant the most to me, so a very special thank you to Mary Utley, Paul Sutton, Brian unning, and Dan Cappa. Thank you to you four especially for all that you have done. With that, I hope I have a chance to see many of you at our final event of the season and I hope you all have a great summer. 4 I D I S T T E U S B C B w s l e e e t t r P a g e 4 nament. From talking to the manager of the tournament it was a record breaking event with just over 1500 entries. Great job nderson and a big thanks to all the Senior Bowlers that help by bowling in the tournament. Just a reminder we will be in Vincennes next year and that ssociation is going to roll out the red carpet for the bowlers. So make plans now to go bowl in the tournament there. ow for the District news. When you get to Union City look for the new owner and a new start for Woodcrest Lanes to open soon under new management. They have completely redone the place from the parking lot to the roof and it looks great, and oh yes check out the great bar-b-q meals. I would like to take this time to thank Mary ewman, Muncie ssociation Manager and Harold Ketner, Randolph County USBC ssociation Manager for all their many years of service to the Muncie USBC ssociation and the Randolph County ssociations. Mary and Harold have both announced their retirement from ssociation Managers at the end of their contracts this season. Mary and Harold will be missed by many of us on the State level and I am sure both of them will be missed by their locals at Muncie and Winchester. These are going to be hard pairs of shoes to fill but I have great faith in the ssociation Boards that they too will continue to do the best for their bowlers in their associations. Thanks so much to both Mary and Harold for their many great years of service to their ssociations. I will hope to see all of the Delegates at the nnual Meeting on June 28, I will close with a wish of a great and safe summer for all and the hopes of seeing everyone next season on the lanes and at the tournaments around the State of Indiana. 5 I D I S T T E U S B C B w s l e e e t t r P a g e 5 District 9 Dale Bennington Well another season of fun and competition on the lanes is drawing swiftly to an end. I am always ready to begin a new season, but like most of us, I m ready for a bit of a break. It is always great to see our bowlers at our tournaments. lways a great time to renew friendships, enjoy friendly competition and make many new friends. The ISUSBC B tries very hard to make these events enjoyable for all who participate. If you have never bowled in the State Tournaments, why not give it a try. It is a great experience. ext year the Open Tournament will be in Ft. Wayne and the Seniors Tournament will be in Vincennes. Consider participating, remember that if you are 50 yrs. of age, you are eligible to bowl in the Seniors Tournament. I know Bill Kendall, Jr. and the folks in Ft. Wayne are looking forward to having you in their District. lso, it has been a long while since the Senior Tournament was in the more southern part of the state, so get a team together, visit the many sites in Vincennes. Steve Utley and the Vincennes crew are excited to have you there. I hope you are putting a team together to participate in the IS- USBC B Scholarship Golf Tournament. It is always held the weekend of nnual Meeting. Check our website for more information or contact Paul Sutton, ISUSBC B Past President or Jon Kelly, ISUSBC B Past President for further information. Hope to see you there!! ll proceeds go toward scholarships for our youth bowlers. Entry forms are available on the ISUSBC B Web-site. Perhaps your District or Local ssociation might be interested in becoming a hole sponsor as well. Plan on attending the nnual Meeting, please see that your ssociation is represented. Remember that your mileage is reimbursed on the day of the meeting if you are registered as a delegate. Make sure that your registrations are mailed on time. Our next District 9 Meeting will be held on Saturday,June 6th in Bedford. Please make plans to attend. We need to come together and talk about things going on in our District, and it is difficult if your ssociation isn t there. I would personally appreciate your attendance. Remember that your District Director will attend your board meetings, nnual meetings, award banquets, Hall of Fame inductions, you only need to invite us. We will attend if at all possible, at no cost to your ssociation. Looking forward to seeing you in June! Until we meet again, good luck, good health, and good bowling! letter Editor Report Terry Henderson The winter leagues are coming to a close. I think it goes faster very year. Time to start looking for a summer league to fit your needs. I always liked a no-tap league. It s fun to get a big average in a no-tap league. If your bowling center has one a golf & bowl league is always great. First golf & bowl league I was in we had 2 good bowlers and 2 good golfers, we won. One team had 4 good golfers, but no good bowlers. They didn t do that good. They played great golf, but lost a lot bowling. So think a little about the team you put to gather. If you are going to have good average bowling next year you need to bowl a few games over the summer. Starting out after not bowling all summer can take you weeks to get back to where you left off. To me the summer is the best time to find a coach and get those few games in and learn something at the same time. nd don t forget the bowling pro shop, a lot of new bowling balls come out over the summer. Every one likes a new bowling ball, so keep up with the new bowling balls that come out this summer. There is news from nderson, I and oblesville, I. Cooper s Sport and Star Dust Lanes will have a new owner as of July 1, David Small is the owner. I got to meet him at a meeting at Cooper s and he is a nice guy so I m sure both centers will be in good hands. Cooper s will have a new name, Championship Lanes and oblesville will be Lane 32 (I think). I talked to Denny Cooper after the meeting, he told me MF wanted to buy the center but they always let everyone that works there go. He didn t want that. Dave is keeping every one, so when you come to the center everyone you love will be there. I wish Dave good luck. The Cooper family is still involved and care about these centers so you know they are in good hands. If you have news for this newsletter, send to me at: terrym.henderson@att.net

8 I D I S T T E U S B C B w s l e e e t t r P a g e 8 and longevity. Coach s Corner Terry Henderson Two-Handed Delivery: nalyzing a ew Technique by Thomas D. McKeon Jr., D.C. There are a lot of opinions and analyses of the newest technique to hit bowling, the two-handed delivery. From a serious bowler s standpoint we need to look at two key components: effectiveness The effectiveness seems to be proven; Osku Palermaa and Jason Belmonte have both shown that this technique can be an effective means of crushing the pocket with high force, high revolutions, and incredible pin carry. This leaves only one question, can these guys keep up this technique with regards to wear and tear on the body. fter analyzing video of these up and coming bowlers it is clear that the two-handed delivery (THD) puts a different series of forces on the body as compared to the single-handed delivery (SHD). To simplify this process lets compare these two techniques one joint at a time. Starting with the shoulder, we see that the THD utilizes less muscle mass from the player s dominant arm, because both arms are used. We also see less global movement in the dominant arm on the back swing because the secondary arm limits our range of motion, not allowing excessive forces to be put through just one shoulder. These factors seem to point to the THD as a less stressful technique with regard to the arm and shoulder. s far as the hands are concerned, THD has advantages as well. nyone who has ever been greeted by a SHD bowler will tell you that their bowling hand is not the softest and most supple hand they have ever touched. Most avid bowlers have calluses, sore knuckles, and a tendency towards arthritis in the hands from excessive force going through only three fingers. THD bowler spreads the weight of the ball out over two whole hands, therefore utilizing a larger surface area and putting far less force on those three over-worked fingers in the SHD bowler. s far as the legs and knees go, both forms of delivery have side-effects. Since both techniques are one sided, just like golf, and require abnormal movement patterns. SHD bowler typically crabs to the foul line, crossing their dominant foot in front of the other one while rotating the body to one side. This poses a unique series of stress to be put through the ankles, knees, and hips that most bowlers adapt to and never consciously think about. But this is not considered a normal gait, and it does place added stress on the slide legs lateral hip, knee, and inner ankle. THD bowler utilizes a skip-skip-slide motion which is not normal either. For anyone trying the THD method for the first time, you will probably be sore the next day if your body is not used to this motion. This does not necessarily mean that it is bad. Take for example a sedentary person who starts a new weight-lifting routine and feels his muscles the next day. He has not done anything bad, his body is merely adapting to the new stressed placed on upon it. With this said, the THD does place more stress on the knees because of the impact from skipping, but Palermaa and Belmonte have one advantage to the SHD bowler. Both of them keep their slide foot parallel with their body, not with the lanes. This seems unorthodox, but it puts less of a grinding force through the knee. Most SHD bowlers twist their bodies into their dominant side to get their hips out of the balls path. This means that your foot stays parallel to the lanes while your body has to rotate roughly 45 degrees from the hips up through the shoulders. This rotation commonly happens in the knee, which is not supposed to rotate and will therefore lead to knee problems, just ask Walter Ray Williams or Jason Couch. The prominent THD bowlers slide with their heel out, and allow their foot to stay parallel to their body, not the lanes, this should mean less wear on the knees, although their hips and lower trunk have to absorb the added impact of the skipping. With regard to the spine, these two techniques are quite different. The SHD bowler typically leans into his dominant side throughout the ball delivery. This is not ideal for the spine, but it does help limit the amount of flexion and rotation utilized from the lower back. The THD bowlers are

9 I D I S T T E U S B C B w s l e e e t t r P a g e 9 forced to flex forward farther and rotate more due to the usage of both shoulders. In order to utilize both arms and the associated increase in ball speed and rev rate, these bowlers are placing more torque through the spine, especially the lower (lumbar) spine. sk any chiropractor and they will tell you that the three worst movements to combine are flexion, rotation, and compression. This puts the most amount of force on our intervertebral discs, and will eventually lead to disc injuries including herniations. Our discs have two parts, the inner part, called the nucleus pulposus, is just like a little bag of Jello. This gives our spine the ability to move and absorb shock. The outer portion, called the annulus fibrosus, is similar to 30 layers of burlap bag stacked on top of each other. If we put too much repetitive force on the spine, these layers of burlap can start to rip, and allow our Jello to squirt out, that is called a herniated disc. One observation of a THD bowler will show you that they flex farther forward and rotate more with their trunk, therefore putting more stress on these discs. In the short run, injuries may be few and far between, but in a long career of bowling, this added force along with thousands of repetitions will most likely lead to more back problems. s with any sport we need to ensure proper technique and adequate conditioning to maintain good health through a long-career. With new techniques will come new muscle groups being used, and therefore new aches and pains. Fortunately the body is incredible at adapting, and it will learn to strengthen the necessary muscles and allow for greater endurance and strength. s for all athletes it is important to cross-train. Especially in one-sided sports like bowling, golf, and tennis, athletes need to maintain a healthy balance of musculature to ensure longevity in their careers and proper body alignment. Sport specific stretches and exercises are necessary as well. THD bowlers are going to require greater flexibility in their trunks, while SHD bowlers require greater shoulder and hip flexibility. These need to be maintained with sport specific exercises and stretches. When compared to other sports, we see tennis players with one-handed and two-handed backhands. Both techniques have their advantages and disadvantages. In golf we have always seen a stationary swing, but dam Sandler s character Happy Gilmore depicted a golfer with a dynamic hockey swing. This was not unlike the movements that Palermaa and Belmonte used today. More than likely THD bowling is here to stay. ny new bowler should be encouraged to try both techniques and see which one seems more natural to them. Listen to your body and if it says bowl with two hands, then try bowling with two hands. For the seasoned SHD bowler, stick with what you are comfortable with. You will more than likely try out this new technique and if you do, start slowly and gently. It requires a whole new set of muscles and movements which will seem awkward and unnatural, but may be beneficial to your game in the long run. The two-handed delivery has its advantages and disadvantages, but it is not better or worse then SHD bowling, it is just different. For some people one movement will seem more natural than others. Use this to your advantage, and do what feels right.
