IS USBC BA Mission The Indiana State USBC BA ensures the integrity and protects the future of the sport, provides programs and services and enhances the bowling experience. IS USBC BA Goals The Indiana State USBC BA, Inc., aim is to promote the appeal of Ten Pin Bowling and to provide quality service to the local associations. Wow! My year as President of the ISUSBC BA is almost over. The time has really flown by in my years on the Board. This year especially has been a blur to me, beginning with the election at last year s annual meeting, the first Board meeting of the year, the Jamboree, Master s Tournament, Championship Tournament, and Seniors Tournament. And now, we re coming up to another annual meeting, and it s time make room for others to have all the fun of serving this great organization! As I m finishing up my term, I can t help but reminisce a bit about all of the associations, and cities and towns that I ve visited, and all the new friends I have met in my years on the State Board of Directors. Before I go, I would like to thank all of the great bowlers around the State of Indiana who have, and will continue to support the IS USBC BA tournaments and programs over the years. While serving on the Board, I have been fortunate to meet many great people from all areas of Indiana, and even the Nation. I have been President s Corner Tony Peterson able to travel this great state, from Hammond, to Madison, from Evansville to Angola. I would like to acknowledge some of the people who have helped me a great deal over the years. Jim Anderson, and Wayne Clarkson, past State Presidents from Lafayette, who encouraged me to apply to serve on the State Board back in the late 1990 s. Their advice and guidance has been very appreciated over the years. They showed me how to read and understand financial reports, and how to conduct an audit of an association s finances. Wayne passed away a few years back. I miss him greatly, but I will always remember our many road trips around the State to meetings and events. Dan Cappa, our association manager. Dan does a lot of behind the scenes work to make our organization run efficiently. It s a full-time job to run an association this large, with the myriad events and tournaments, purchases, sponsorships, filings, agendas, meeting arrangements, and a million other things that need to be done. Thanks for keeping everything running smoothly, Dan! Tom Baxter, our assistant association manager. Tom fills in for Dan on anything that needs done, and also is our communications manager. Tom s experience on the National ABC and USBC boards is invaluable for the Indiana State association. He is quick with encouragement and advice, and is a great resource for any board member. Thanks, Tom! Our current Tournament Managers, Larry Owens, Gene Neal, and Jeff Circle, as well as our past managers, such as Ron Holder, Gene Coleman, and John Stage. Larry, Gene, and Jeff are a major reason that we re so successful. They are customer-oriented, have been managing their tournaments well for a long time, and are just great to work with. Thanks to all three of them. I would also like to thank all of our past and current IBA and IS USBC BA board members. It has been a very dynamic group, to say the least. My eyes were really opened to the fact that what works in one area of the state may not work somewhere else. Every association is different. It has been great to see all of the different events and tournaments that are run in different (See President on page 2)

Page 2 (Continued from page 1) areas, and I have taken some ideas back to my local association as well. We need more of this idea sharing among locals around the state. When I began my term on the IBA board, I was introduced to many of the old IBA Life Members. Unfortunately, some of these have passed away in the intervening years, but they have been a great resource for advice on any ideas I had. Now, we have some USBC Honorary Life Members, and it s always great to see them at banquets, annual meeting, and Jamboree. In closing, I would like to thank all of the Annual Meeting delegates over the past 11 years who have reelected me to my various positions on the Board of Directors. I have appreciated all of my years on the Board, and am thankful for my time. If not for my term on the Board, I would have not have made so many friends around the State. I hope that in some small way, my service to the IS USBC BA Board has helped to promote the sport of bowling in this State. I hope I have gained much experience and many lifelong friends over the past 11 years. I am always available to help with anything for the IS USBC BA, whether it be a committee assignment, or event/tournament work. Thank you for the opportunity! 1st Vice-President Brian Nunning Hopefully everyone has had a great season! But! The season is not completely over just yet. The IS USBC BA has a very important weekend of activities coming up very soon and hopes everyone will be able to participate. The Annual Meeting weekend is scheduled for June 4 & 5 th at the Marten House in Indianapolis. Best Regards, Brian Nunning 1 st Vice President 2nd Vice-President Pat Webster The 2010/11 bowling season is basically completed. Hopefully everyone has enjoyed the bowling season with many good scores. The Open Championship Tournament is close to being complete in Richmond at the end of the month. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Richmond local association in their effort in helping to run a very successful IS USBC BA Open Tournament. I am also looking forward to the 2012 Tournament which will be held in Fort Wayne. The annual delegates meeting will again be held this summer in Indianapolis the first weekend in June on the 4 th & 5 th. The annual scramble golf tournament being held on this weekend (4 th ) is open to teams with any IS USBC BA member. This golf tournament is fun to participate in before you attend the Hall Of Fame induction dinner that evening. I am hopeful all associations plan on attending the annual IS USBC BA delegates meeting on Sunday, 06/05/11. Have a good summer and I look forward to seeing everyone at the IS USBC BA future events.

Page 3 3rd Vice-President Paul Sutton Greeting from the 3 rd VP, well another bowling season is coming to a close, congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to everyone who participated in league and tournament bowling this year. I have worked the IS USBC BA Open Championship Tournament in Richmond 6 of the first 7 weeks, taking a weekend off to bowl in it, I also bowled in the IS USBC BA State Seniors Tournament in Muncie and made my yearly trip to Reno for the USBC Nationals, no matter how many times I walk out the walk way at the Reno Bowling Stadium it still gives me chills. I have yet to post any great scores there, maybe one day I will. My first year as an officer of the IS USBC BA has been quite a change from being a District Director, after the hustle and bustle of running a district it is a whole different thing. One of the jobs of a VP is to be at the beck and call of the President, I have attended a few functions around the state for President Peterson when he was unable to attend. The most important job of a VP is to be the mentor for 3 of the IS USBC BA district directors, this year I have been mentor for District 3 Director John Brothers, District 7 Director A J Hacker, and District 9 Director Marcus Garrett, I have kept them informed on upcoming events and have attended their District meetings. The job of a mentor is not to have all the answers for the Directors, but to advise and be someone the Director can discuss things with if they so desire. I hope to see delegates from all local associations at the annual meeting on June 5th and I hope you will consider putting a golf team in the IS USBC BA 4 th Annual Golf Outing to be held June 4 th at Morningstar Golf Club in INDY, please check out the web site for more details, 100% of all the proceeds from this outing goes into the IS USBC BA Youth Scholarship Fund. I hope everyone has a great summer and if you are bowling in summer league I wish you high scores. District 1 Charles Wilkey Greetings from the heart of Indiana! It is amazing how time flies. It seems like the season just started and the winter leagues are ending. I had the opportunity to attend the Rushville Awards banquet. A great time was had by all. Thanks to Gary Nigh for asking me to come to this great event. I had the pleasure of bowling in the Senior Tournament in Muncie, Indiana. It was a good thing I could throw out my low game! If you are over 50, this is a great event and I encourage you to make time for this outstanding event. The Open Championship tournament is almost complete. Thanks to the Richmond Bowling Association for all their hard work during the tournament. The Annual Meeting in June! We are having our annual golf tournament on Saturday. I highly encourage you to get a foursome together and play in this outstanding event. Saturday evening is the President s Dinner and Hall of Fame Banquet at the Annual Meeting. Jeff Circle, Gary Hiday and Paul Miller will be inducted into our Hall of Fame. This is a tremendous event and there are always some interesting stories. Have a great summer! District 2 John Blasko John doesn t have anything to report this time. Please look for him in the next issue. District 3 John Brothers The 3rd District will be hosting the 2011 State Jamboree in Warsaw, IN. I will be held on Oct. 15 & 16. The event will be held at the Ramada Inn on highway 30 in Warsaw. The hospitality room on Sat. night will be held in the Round Barn Theater which is next to the Ramada. We hope to have every item and details worked out at our next meeting on May 15, District 9 Open

Page 4 District 4 Bill McAbee It was good seeing members of District 4 at the open tournament. I hope that each of you had an enjoyable time and that your scores were high. My team and I did not do so good. Oh well, always next year, with the open tournament being held in Ft Wayne at Thunderbowl #1 and Pro Bowl West. Bowling leagues are now winding down and I keep hearing the "G" (Golf) word more and more. In closing, I want to say congrats to Sydney Brummett as the Girls High School State Single Tournament Champion and to E J Tackett for being the Boys High School State Single Tournament runner-up. I'm looking forward to seeing you at our state annual meeting in June and at the District #4 meeting in September. I hope that each of you will have a good and fun summer. District 5 Bill Kendall Hello from the 5th District. It seems like just the other day I was writing this column for the first time and now it is time for the May newsletter. My grandfather once told me that "The older you get the faster time seems to go". And then there's that old saying "Time flies when you are having fun". So with being old and having as much fun as I have had with my first year as Director you all can see things are moving fast for me. I would now like to take the time to thank everyone in the state for their support of the tournaments that were hosted by the 5th District this year. Thank you for your participation. I worked some of these tournaments and it was a blast to see all my old friends and to meet and make so many new friends. I would like to also thank all those hard workers at each of the tournament sites, I have helped host a few tournaments and know the hard endless time and the thankless hours it takes to do this. So again, thank you and my hat off to each of you too. I hope everyone that bowled had a good time in each of the tournament sites too. Because without you these would not be fun and exciting like they are. Please remember the changes of the State Annual Meeting, Hall of Fame Dinner and the Golf Outing. Due to changes at the National level the dates have changed so please remember June 4, 2011 for golf outing and Hall of Fame Dinner that night and June 5, 2011 for the Annual Meeting. Please send your delegates to this meeting too, It is important to have your association's voice and vote counted at this meeting. Remember the May 15, 2011 deadline for delegates registration. I am not sure if this is the time or place, but here goes. I would like to thank President Tony Peterson and the ISUSBC Board for letting me have this opportunity to serve you, the bowlers of this state and the 5 th District as their Director. This has been a dream come true for me to bowl and make friends across the state. So thank you all again for what I think has been a GREAT first year and looking forward to what I hope to be many more years of serving you the bowlers and the ISUSBC Board. will close this now by wishing you all a fun filled and safe summer. May God Bless you all. District 6 Kerry Caine Greetings, as another season comes to an end I hope everyone reached their goals this season of rolling your high game or high series. Maybe for some winning that league championship or city tournament. Back on February 27 both Loganland and Grant County USBC held their Hall of Fame Dinners. I attended the Grant County Hall of Fame. I would like to congratulate the inductees. The following were inducted into Grant County Hall of Fame for Superior Performance Jenny Cave and Greg Brown, for Stars of Yesteryear Tiffany Buck and Ezell Hudson Sr. and for Service and Leadership Steve Puckett. The City of First (Kokomo) will be holding their Hall of Fame Dinner at Celebrations on May 14 at 5:00 for more information you can contact Gary Trent or Don Sparks. I would like to congratulate Jeff Circle, Gary Hiday and Paul Miller as they will be inducted into the IS USBC BA Hall of Fame on June 4, 2011 in Indianapolis. I want to thank all of you that have bowled in the Open Championship Tournament in Richmond this year. We have some bowlers from the District that are leading the tournament. Good Luck to Advance Pool Services as the tournament comes to a close.

Page 5 District 7 Alice J. (AJ) Hacker Hello everyone from District 7. It s hard to believe that another season is wrapping up, seems as though we just got started. I have heard many of you talk about the fact that you were ready to finish for the year, but take a couple of weeks off, and perhaps consider bowling in a Sports League this summer, something different, maybe work on your technique. The ISUSBC BA Open Tournament is entering it s last weeks, we have had a great time this year, a special THANKS to Richmond for hosting this year s tournament. Tournament time is always a special time to bowl with competitors that also become friends. You may not have rolled the scores you wanted, but we hope you had fun. Considering the world and its problems, it s kind of nice to just relax, enjoy friends and compete in the sport we all care about. I have been fortunate to have been invited to several Hall of Fame Banquets in my District and around the state. This is a great opportunity for your local associations to recognize those persons who are have contributed to the sport of bowling, either through participation and rolling great scores, winning tournaments, and giving of their time and effort to make the bowling experience better for all who participate. If your association does not have a Hall of Fame, you might want to strongly consider starting one for the next season. If you have questions, your District Director is available to offer suggestions as to how others have conducted their Hall of Fame. We are here to help, just ask. I hope your young bowlers who are college bound were able to get their scholarship applications post -marked by May 1. Start early next year to encourage your youth to apply. Also speaking of scholarships, why don t you get a golf team together and participate in the Scholarship Golf Tournament this year. It will be held at Morningstar Golf Club, on the east side of Indianapolis, with an 8:30 shotgun start. You need not be a member of the Board of Directors of your Association. As long as you are a sanctioned bowler, you are eligible to participate. The golf tournament is on Saturday, June 4, Hope you consider participating. I am looking forward to seeing the delegates at the Annual Meeting. You should have gotten your registration notices, please make sure you have them sent to Dan Cappa by the 15 th of May. If you have never attended the Hall of Fame induction and the President s Recognition Banquet on Saturday evening prior to the Annual Meeting, you might want to put this on your agenda of things to do. It is a wonderful evening where we are given the opportunity to honor those who have given so much to the sport. Have a great summer, hope to see you soon. Sincerely, A. J. Hacker District 8 Mary Utley Greetings from District 8! Vincennes is on a roll! Once again, a team from the Vincennes USBC BA is in first place in the IS USBC BA Open Tournament. However, the guys aren't the only ones who can bowl the Battered Bags of the Greater Evansville USBC Assn. are in first place in the 84th Annual Indiana State Women's Championship Tournament being held in Terre Haute. The 5-man Handicap Division 1 (751 & over) team shot a nice 3,471! Matthew Sanders, a high school senior and also from the GEUSBCA, shot 2,356 to finish first in the Scratch All Events, Division1, 30th Annual Indiana State USBCYA Tournament. Congratulations ladies and gentlemen! GEUSBCA Hall of Famer, Mike Hofmann, was on fire Friday, April 8, 2011, at Franklin Lanes in Evansville. Mike, no stranger to 300 games and 800 series, shot an amazing 867. He opened with three strikes, then left a flat 7 pin and, while attempting his spare, stuck on the approach and missed -- for the first and last time. When the dust settled he had rolled 32 strikes in a row for the 867 series on games of The lefthander nailed 35 of a possible 36 strikes in his three games. How 'bout those lefties? On March 27, 2011, 1:00 pm, the GEUSBCA hosted the district's first District 8 meeting this year at Franklin Lanes in Evansville. We had 21 attendees. After a business and informational meeting, the group bowled a blind-draw doubles tournament. Sixteen-year old Lindsey Borman shot a scratch 288 game. Wow! At 16, I had never picked up a bowling ball. What am I saying I still haven't shot a 288. Can you imagine what this young lady will accomplish during her bowling career? Note: Lindsey is a youth member on the GEUS- BCA board. I suppose I still have time to shoot a 288. Several of us are traveling to Richmond to bowl May Look forward to seeing you there!

Page 6 letter Editor Report Terry Henderson Finally the only ice I see is in my glass. What a nasty winter we had this year. Spring is here at last. This is the time of year for many tournaments. Hope your bowling in the state and seniors tournament this year. Most bowling centers have tournament forms available. The winter leagues will be finishing soon, hope you had a good season. Many bowling centers have a lot of different summer leagues to offer. Try a sport shot league this summer. A no-tap league can be a lot of fun. 10 Page 10 Coach s There are a number of factors that affect your CG, and if you are aware of them, you will be able to spin them to your advantage. Not all bowling balls are created equal, and seasoned players are actually quite often going to great lengths to alter their balls so as to squeeze the last Corner ounce of performance out of them. Terry Henderson Nothing affects the CG as much as the top and bottom weight of a bowling ball. Granted, the ball is perfectly round and it is hard to imagine that there might be different weights that could even be discussed, yet did you ever consider that there is a little bit of extra weight added to the ball to make up for the material that is discarded when the finger holes are drilled? Failure to add this counterweight would result in your ball rolling down the lane with a quite noticeable wobble. If you take a close look at your bowling ball, you will actually be able to see where its CG is located because it is marked with a small dot. The counterweight that makes up for the weight lost when the finger holes were drilled is placed underneath this dot. The weight of the ball encompasses everything from the coverstock to the core, which contains the weight block. The core of a bowling ball is the part of the ball with the largest concentration of mass. The sophistication and position of the core of a bowling ball are key features in the dynamics of a bowling ball. The sophistication and position can be explained by the Radius of Gyration (RG), which is a property used to determine how fast the ball begins to rotate after leaving the bowler's hand. RG is the measurement of where the weight is located inside of the ball (relative the ball's center). The core position, size, shape and density can adjust the RG. For example, a centralized core locates the weight in the center of the ball resulting in a low RG ball. If the core is placed off-center, the weight of the ball is shifted resulting in a high RG bowling ball, or what is known as a cover-heavy ball. Generally, the lower the RG, the quicker the ball will pick up its revolutions. Bowling balls measured with low RG ratings will encourage a fast and early revolution rate and tend to pick up a strong roll pattern on the front end of the lane where the greatest concentration of lane oil exists. Low RG balls are great choices for heavy or medium heavy oil lane conditions. Medium RG balls will pick up its strongest revolution rate on the mid-portion of the lane and tend to match well with medium to medium-heavy oil lane conditions. In general, a medium RG ball will react smoothly on the front end, roll effectively in the mid-lane, and arc evenly on the back-end of the lane which makes it a reliable ball in reading the lanes. High RG balls will lope down the lane conserving energy for later use thereby picking up its strongest roll pattern on the back end of the lane. A long skid pattern produced by high RG balls will match well on medium-dry to dry lane conditions. The coverstock has the biggest effect of the balls reaction. You can think of the coverstock like tires on a car, old tires with no tread don t have much grip and snow tires have the most grip. The core or weight block has the next effect on a bowling ball. The drill or layout is last and has the smallest effect on the way the ball will roll. One of the reasons there are so many bowling balls on the market is the fact the different combinations of coverstocks and weight blocks. So it is very important to talk to a professional ball driller to make the right choice of bowling ball. You see some bowlers bring five bowling balls or more for league bowling or tournaments. It is a good idea to have more than one bowling ball so when the lanes change you can change to a different ball. The only problem is a lot of bowlers have no idea what the difference is with each ball. I had a youth bowler that would bring 12 bowling balls for a scratch league I coach. When we checked the bowling balls to see what he had, we found a mess. Ten of the bowling balls were the same, same coverstock, about the same weight block and all drilled with a strong layout. Four of the balls he got from friends and were never drilled for his hand. Don t just buy a new bowling ball because your friends like it. Talk to a professional ball driller to get the right bowling balls that you may need. Try one low RG ball with a aggressive coverstock and one with a weaker coverstock. One high RG ball with an aggressive coverstock and one with a weaker coverstock. And one plastic bowling ball for spares is a good idea. Having more than one ball that is the same is just a lot of weight you have to carry in to bowl. Sale them.
