IS USBC BA Mission The Indiana State USBC BA ensures the integrity and protects the future of the sport, provides programs and services and enhances the bowling experience. IS USBC BA Goals The Indiana State USBC BA, Inc., aim is to promote the appeal of Ten Pin Bowling and to provide quality service to the local associations. President s Corner Hello Bowlers. Most fall leagues are up and running. I hope that everyone is having a great time on the lanes. If your scores aren t what you think they should be, just go to your bowling center and consider practicing on those shots that are causing you problems. If you have a coach available at your center, consider asking him/her for suggestions for improving your game. Competition is wonderful, but not at the price of enjoying your friends on the lanes. This year s ISUSBC BA State Jamboree is now history. District 9 hosted a great Jamboree, the first one they have held in fourteen years. We want to thank everyone for coming and sharing in the weekend activities. If you didn t attend, you missed out on a wonderful weekend, George Lambert, USBC Regional Manager brought information Alice J. (AJ) Hacker regarding benefits and perks they have available to their sanctioned bowlers. He talked about some things that I was not aware of either. There were many fun activities later in the day and on Sunday. If you have never been to a Jamboree, make plans to attend the 2017 ISUSBC BA State Jamboree to be held in and hosted by District 2. Watch for more news closer to next October an also check the IS- USBC BA Website. The 2016 State District Challenge was held at Stardust II in Merrilville this year, hosted by last year s Challenge winners, District 2, with Jerry Growchowski, the District Director for District 2 and his volunteers. It was a great day of fun and competition. Next year s District Challenge will be in District 1, as Brandywine USBC won this year s competition with the 2 nd place going to a strong team from Attica in District 7. Fillable entries for the upcoming tournaments are posted on the website. The first for this year will be the Indiana Scratch Classic and will be in Lafayette. Later, we will have the IS- USBC BA Master s Tournament in Anderson. Open tournament slots are still available, check the website for squad times, and other tournament information. This is the first time that we are allowing multiple entry into the Team Event and the Open Tournament. Check your center for a poster or again, go to the website. Holiday Season is just around the corner, I wish you all a great Thanksgiving and a wonderful, joy filled Merry Christmas! Take care, be safe, God Bless! AJ.

w s l e e N e t t r P a g e 2 1st Vice-President Everyone knows by now that all state and local associations must merge by August 1, The IS USBC BA, IS USBC WBA, and IS USBC YA have been meeting and discussing this. Our meetings have been very successful. We plan to submit merger paperwork to Mary Utley USBC by (or in) January The Organizational Meeting, which is required, is set for June 17, Kudos to all committee members for working so well together. The Greater Evansville USBC Association, Inc. is holding its biennial Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Youth Career Special Recognition event Saturday, November 19, 2016, Hadi Shrine in Evansville. Inductees are: Hall of Fame Inductee Youth Career Special Recognition William R. (Bill) Cross Matthew Sanders Curtis G. (Curt) Garrett, Sr. Lindsey Borman Michael D. (Mike) Huff Gilbert G. (Gil) Wildt Many of you have either heard of or met both Matt and Lindsey. Matt is one of the state s finest young bowlers. Lindsey, a good bowler as well, has served on both the IS USBC YA and the GEUSBCA boards. Bill and Gil are being under the Senior category Mike and Curt under the Outstanding Performance category. Gil joins both his parents who are in our Hall of Fame. It s a family thing. I am looking forward to attending the Seymour Hall of Fame Saturday, November 5, 2016 and would like to congratulate who are being honored. Being inducted, or even being nominated, into any Hall of Fame is the ultimate achievement for a bowler in my opinion. Yes, it is great to bowl 300s, 800s, etc. But, being recognized by one s peers nothing can top that. I wish everyone Until next year 2nd Vice-President Bill Kendall Hey, to all my Bowling Family out there. This season has started with a bang and I hope you are scoring some good sets. Keep the scores climbing because you know it is about time to start thinking of the State Tournaments? By the time you get this the Scratch Classic will be in the History Book and I hope you were able to bowl that tournament. We still have a great deal of tournaments for you to join. There is the Masters Tournament in January at Championship Lanes in Anderson. This is the last weekend of January Start the year off right by winning this big show, if you are like me and having a slow start this season at least put it on your calendar to come and see those that are doing good and look at the new things that have been added to the center. Then you get one more chance to see the new features of the center when you join the 2017 ISUSBC BA Open Tournament that will be in Anderson for the minors and Greater Hamilton County for the Team Event. This starts the Middle of February and goes till April 30 th.this is another first for the State by hosting the tournament in 2 different associations. So join us and tell us what you think of this new idea. We are starting something new at the tournament this year too. We are going to try automatic check- in. All your needs at the tournament can be handled by one person checking you in. No more going around the room looking to get a change in your line up done. The Tech team has been working hard to make your Tournament bowling easier and hassle free. So please come join the fun and tell us what you think about the new stuff. Then we can please the more experienced bowlers. Those that have been around for a minute or two and are now called a senior. I think you all (like me) need to come over to Elwood and show that us so call seniors still have the stuff and bowl in our Seniors Tournament that will be the First of April and will be hosted by the great Elwood Association in Elwood at Wells Lanes. While you are at this tournament please give Gene Neal a hard time. He always likes people to give him the business. So I say let the fun with the tournaments begin. Hope to see all of you on the lanes this season. Until then high scores to all.

P a g e 3 3rd Vice-President Dale Bennington Hello everyone. I hope everyone is enjoying their fall leagues as they are well under way. I want to congratulate District 9, Mike McPherson, Director, and those folks from the District that pitched in to have a great ISUSBC BA State Jamboree! I was so proud of them as I was their District Director for 6 years before being elected as the ISUSBC BA 3 rd Vice President. These associations have helped to host the first Jamboree to be held in District 9 in 14 years. GREAT JOB, Bloomington USBC (the host city for the event), taking care of the Tournament, the reservations, and Program Book; the ladies from Columbus for the great center pieces and decorations for the Hospitality Night; Madison, Seymour, Bloomington, Orange County, and Columbus for their special booths at the Hospitality Night; Madison for taking care of all the baskets that were donated for the Jamboree; Orange County for registration; and Seymour for taking care of our split pots all weekend. I will not try to mention everyone by name because I do not want to miss anyone. I also want to thank all the Districts that placed ads in the program book and donated baskets. We really appreciated it! It was wonderful. If you have never been to a State Jamboree, plan on attending next year s event which will be held in District 2. Look for more information closer to the time. The ISUSBC BA Website has information regarding upcoming events, tournaments, Fillable forms for tournament entries, scholarship forms, Hall of Fame nomination forms and other information that is just a click or two away. Just a reminder to visit ISUSBCBA.org and check it out. Tournament time is here. Get a team or bowl singles or doubles events. The Tournaments are for you to enjoy friendly competition with others around the state. I m enjoying my year traveling around the state, renewing friendships and assisting those Directors for whom I am a mentor. Please remember that your District Directors, Officers and Staff are there to help with any questions or thoughts you may have. Invite your Director to a Board Meeting, a transition committee meeting or you special events. They are pleased to offer any assistance they can and enjoy celebrating with the local associations. The Holiday Season is quickly approaching and I want to wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving and best wishes for a Merry Christmas! District 1 Doug Parmerlee Hello everyone I hope you all are doing well. This is one of the hardest letters I have every had to write, but I am resigning my position as the IS USBC BA District 1 director. I think with my center closing and the folding of Artesian USBC s lot of my heart has been taken away. I have really enjoyed serving with you all on my short run, but the motivation isn t there anymore. I hope I have not upset anyone and I love you all. I have met so many people and have traveled many places that I would have probably never gone too. Since my center has closed we are bowling in Franklin and it has not been the same. After spending 30 plus years hanging out at the alley every night I have enjoyed staying home. Spending time with my family and more time with my grandkids, after all these years of being out Association President and being the one everyone went to I just want to be Doug and be Joe bowler. You all have been a great asset to me on teaching me the things I needed to learn, and I sure hope I have not been a big disappointment to the board or anyone. I have always said when something isn t fun anymore its time to step down and move on. I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for this great opportunity and it is something I will never forget. I will need help getting some Plaques delivered and want to leave on a clean slate. Thanks so much.

P a g e 5 District 6 Jim Leming Jim doesn t have anything to report this time. Please look for him in the next issue. District 7 Kevin George Kevin doesn t have anything to report this time. Please look for him in the next issue. District 8 Steve Utley The following is a quote from Perfect Bowling.com: Bowling is a great sport that has a long and full history. Today, bowling is one of the most popular sports in the world and is the most participated recreational sport played in the United States. Evidence of bowling in the past Bowling can be traced back as far as 3200 BC. A crude form of the game was believed to have existed when a collection of objects was discovered within an Egyptian boy s grave sometime during the 1930 s by Sir Flinders Petrie. There is even strong evidence that a form of bowling was even popular in England in It was so popular, in fact, it is rumored that King Edward III outlawed the game because his troops were neglecting their archery practice in order to bowl. Evolution of the game The game of bowling that we play today was not always played with 10 pins. It actually started as a nine pin game and played all throughout Europe. One very unique variation of the game of bowling is still being played in Edinburgh. The player takes a ball without holes and heaves it at the pins from between his legs which results in the player landing on his stomach. The very first bowling location was more than likely in New York and was played more like lawn bowling. That area has since gone through changes and is now in the heart of the financial district and the small area where the game was played is now called Bowling Green. As the game of bowling was becoming more popular in America it was drawing negative attention. In 1841 Connecticut law makers made it illegal to run any nine pin lanes. This was due to the level of gambling that was becoming associated with the game. This law was quickly circumvented by adding an addition pin which paved the way for today s 10 pin game. Bowling as we know is a sport for all ages. We want our sport to grow. Let s remember the sport is played on different levels of importance and skill even in league play. Some are recreational bowlers and others are very competitive. We should always be good sports and present ourselves on lanes as ambassadors of our great sport. I have had the misfortune of observing two grown men almost have a brawl over a pin count on a spare. Another incident occurred over score keeping, profanities and a threat of violence. We need to remember to control our emotions. A potential bowler or minor may be walking through the Center, and we need to project a positive image by reframing from using loud profanities, obscene gestures, and loud arguments. The ten pin is not going to fall every time, and splits are to occur. Let s mind our manners and be good sports and, most of all, enjoy our sport. District 9 Mike McPherson First off I want to Thank everyone that I have had the pleasure of meeting since I took office on August 1 st 2016 for all of the help and guidance. Our District started the year off with news that no District likes to hear. We lost 2 bowling centers, Bedford and Seymour closed. Both associations are maintaining their Charter status, we all hope for good news off them getting a center back. We have a couple of associations that are going thru the merger process, Orange County and Madison. I think we both have a good handle on what we need to do and how. Listening to George Lambert during the Jamboree was helpful and knowing help is just a call away helps take the stress away. We had 4 associations participate in our district challenge, hosted by Columbus, Madison, Columbus, Seymour and Orange County. With Seymour defending (Continued on page 6)

P a g e 6 (Continued from page 5) their District 9 champion status, and getting an entry to District State Challenge. Thanks to Bob Klosterman for running this tournament again this year. District 9 was the host for the State Jamboree, as most of you already know, it was a success. We had great attendance from the bowlers in all the districts, great numbers for our blind draw tournament. Thanks to Char for taking care of the pull tabs, I missed all of that was at the far end of the bowling alley. The theme of the Jamboree 50 s Rock N Bowl created a few memorable characters walking around, not to mention any names but we all know who they are. I have not seen all the pictures yet but I am betting there are some great ones wandering around. Vella Price you did great work on our Jamboree book. Our pie toss booth from my home association, Orange County, was a hit thanks to Dale Benning- ton being such a sport and putting his face in for a target, not to mention our own State President AJ Hacker putting her face in harm s way for us to give a toss at. If you ask Dale I am sure there was not many toss s, more like a full push and twist. I know mine didn t have any air to it when it mashed into my face. Special Thanks to Annie Pittman and Deb Middleton with registration and helping with our booth. Bob Klosterman and his Seymour Association s booth kept everyone on edge to see whose number survived. Bob Thank you for taking care of the 50/50 raffle. Randy Derringer s Madison Association s booth with their wheel of fortune was busy most of the night. Randy you and Lisa were a blessing with the gift basket raffle, Thank you. The little lady that was doing the Massages was busy all night at Bloomington s booth. Jan Mahoney with her people from the Columbus Association did a great job with their booth and all the decorations, especially the table center pieces, Loved it all. The DJ did a great job of keeping the music going all night. I have to thank all the Districts for stepping up and accepting the challenge of bringing Gift Baskets, there were several great baskets. Special shout out to Paul Sutton for the Lee Greenwood, God Bless the USA, was the moving moment of the night, Thank You again Paul. The manager and staff at the Holiday Inn get kudos for a great job of catering to all our needs, I feel they went above and beyond. Suzanne Harden and Dale Bennington and all of our people in District 9 you made it a pleasure and fun time for all of us that attended, you have no idea how proud I am of our District. Looking forward to what the future will bring working with all the people of District 9 hoping to continue the growth that has begun. letter Editor Report Terry Henderson Hope every one is having a great bowling season and your average is up this year. It s time for every one to find the tournament application and get your teams signed up. The Open Tournament is a great tournament for any one to bowl in. Any one can bowl on the open tournament so get it done. The Masters Tournament is coming up soon, this is a great tournament for any one that has game. The Indiana Classic has the same format and is for the same type of bowler. Both are very good tournaments to learn about the game of bowling. I know bowlers that don't think they are good enough to bowl in this tournament, but a lot of times they bowl in it and win a lot of cash. You can t get the cash if you never bowl in it. The Senior Tournament is for the older bowlers and is a great tournament as it is very challenging. Getting ready to bowl in a tournament can give you a good reason to buy new bowling balls or a bag. Maybe some new bowling shoes or any thing. If you have news for this newsletter, send to me at: terrym.henderson@att.net

P a g e 9 Coach s In 2010 I got inducted into the Anderson Hall of Fame. It is a big honor. Corner I found out a month or so before. Friends would come up and congratulate me and I always said thanks, but said I m Terry Henderson not sure I deserve it. I have bowled a 300 game and have series my high is 755. My high average is 204. I was president of the Anderson Association and served on the board for many years. I have coached for over 20 years and helped many youth bowlers. I won the all events handicap once. I have been the news letter editor for 4 or 5 years. One day a person I admire a lot came and congratulated me, Cathy Cooper. I thanked her and said I m not sure I deserve it. She said look at all of the things you have done for bowling and for a lot of years. How much do you think you need to do, you have bowled well for years, you were on the board for years and was president and you have coached for years. How much does some one have to do. Then she said there are many people that vote for the Hall of Fame inductees. Every one of them that voted you in thinks you did what was needed to be inducted. So believe they made a good choice. Because she knows me so well I finally understood. I have attended a lot of Hall of Fame banquets and see the same thing most of the time the inductees always feels they don t deserve it. I m sure some for the reason I felt that I didn't deserve to be inducted was I always go to the state Hall of Fame banquet and see bowlers that were pro bowlers and some have 10 or more 300 game and 800 series. They have won state tournaments doubles and all kind of things. Your local Hall of Fame is maybe the easiest to get inducted into. You don t have to be a pro bowler or win a lot of state or national tournaments. The state Hall of Fame is a little harder to get inducted into. Some are pro bowler and most have won state tournaments and bowled 300 games and 800 series. The national Hall of Fame would be the hardest to get inducted into, I not sure what you would have to do to get inducted into it. Once you are inducted into a hall of fame I think you should go to the banquet every year you can. I know things come up and you can t make it, but most years you should be able to. I think once you are a hall of fame member you become like an ambassador for bowling. I know the Anderson Association has some Hall of Fame members that have never been back to a hall of fame banquet. I have no idea why someone doesn t go to them. I always feel honored to be there. I know things come up where they can t go to the banquet, but not every year. I don t think most bowlers start bowling with the idea that some day they will be inducted into the hall of fame. I bowled for over 25 years and never thought about it. I know most for locals and the state someone has to turn in an application for someone to be inducted into their hall of fame. I m not sure about the national hall of fame. So if there is someone you would like to see inducted into your hall of fame or the state hall of fame, asked someone if there is a application for them. If not talk to people to get some stats on them and talk to the association manager to help you with an application. A friend of mine bowled a lot better then I ever did and did a lot of service to bowling. When I checked there was no application for him, he is now in our Hall of Fame.
