We wish you well as you move forward with your Roadmap to the Future. May you be successful in your endeavors. If we may be of assistance, do not hesitate to give us a call. We are here to help. I am sure we will enjoy another successful bowling season under her leadership. huge Thank You to Immediate Past President Kerry Caine. So Kerry enjoy your retirement from the IS USBC B board. Hope we see you on the lanes and at our events. In keeping with USBC s mandate (approved by the delegates at the 2016 convention), representatives from the Indiana State USBC B, WB, and Y met in June and discussed the impending merger. three-person team (transition committee) from each association was agreed upon, which forms a nine-person committee. Our first meeting is scheduled to be held in September. We all agree that we want to do what is best for our bowlers, while preserving our respective histories. We believe we can come together and form an association that will enhance our sport for all Indiana bowlers. Please help us accomplish this with your support and by having a positive attitude as we move forward. I look forward to this season as I get to be the mentor for Doug Parmerlee, Jr. District 1; Bill (Boo) Kendall, Jr. District 4; and Jim Leming District 6. These gentlemen will be helping me learn and not the other way around. How exciting to be able to travel around our state and meet more of our bowlers! Hope to see you on the lanes! 2nd Vice-President Bill Kendall Hello to the Bowling Families across the state. I want you all to know that I am very honored to serve as your second Vice President. It is hard to believe that a new season has started. where did the summer go? ow its time to start thinking about ball fittings and shoes for the lanes. For us that don't bowl in the summer we might want to knock off some of the dust and clean the bowling gear to get ready for the first night of league too. If you anything like me a little (in my case a lot of practice) might be needed. So go on out to your local center and get a game or two under your belt to see if you need to make any changes in your game and or your equipment. With the merger rule that was passed at the ational Convention I can see this being a busy year for some associations in the state too. I am asking you all to be mindful of others and their feelings, share ideas and not bad feelings while you start the merge process. ow lets talk about some of the good things to look forward to this season. When you come to the tournaments this year look at all the new things the tech team has put in place for you the tournament bowlers. we hope you like and will share your ideas with us so we can improve your tournament experience. We want you to feel at home when you join us at the tournament sites around the state. The tournament sights this year are the Scratch Classic in Lafayette at rrowhead lanes the first weekend of ovember. the Masters in nderson the last weekend of January 2017 at Championship Lanes. the Open Tournament that will be at Greater Hamilton County for the Team Event at Bowl 32 and nderson for your Doubles and Singles Events at Championship Lanes. Then there is the Seniors Tournament hosted by the Elwood ssociation at Wells lanes in Elwood. I would like to see all of you come out and join us at any of the tournaments. We have started a couple of new things this year. We would like you to let us know how you feel about these new things too. 6 I D I S T T E U S B C B w s l e e e t t r P a g e 6 letter Editor Report Terry Henderson It s that time again for the winter bowling leagues to start. So get your gear out of the storage room and check the holes for spiders. This is a good time to clean your bowling shoes. You can clean the slide shoe with ivory soap. This is a great time to buy new bowling balls or shoes or anything you may need for the season. This is also a great time to find a coach and get a lesson or two in before your league starts. Get a few games of practice in before your league starts. It s the thing to do if you want to have a better average this year. Bowling is one of the most popular participatory sports in the United States, where there are thousands of recreational leagues. game consists of 10 frames, with two balls allowed a bowler in each frame. Each pin knocked down counts one point. Toppling all pins with the first ball is a strike and scores 10 points plus the total of the next two balls. Clearing the alley with two balls is a spare and scores 10 points plus the next roll. perfect game, 300 points, requires 12 consecutive strikes. The merican Bowling Congress (founded 1895) and the Women's International Bowling Congress (founded 1916) hold yearly championships. 12 I D I S T T E U S B C B w s l e e e t t r P a g e 1 2 Coach s Corner Terry Henderson Bowlers always want to get better, but it seems they don t do the things they need to get better. One thing you need to become a better bowler is knowledge of the game. You need to know when you need to move your line. nd you need to know how to move. There are a lot of bowlers that stand in same place and hit the same target every where they bowl. If you bowl in a center that is on the dry side, then you go to a tournament that the lanes are a lot oiler you will bowl bad all tournament long. The main thing you need to learn is to watch your ball roll all the way down the lane. How far did it slide and when did it start to hook and last when did it get into a roll. s you bowl your line may get dryer when it does your ball may hit the head pin a little higher. Then you need to move a board left with your feet to get the ball back in the pocket. If you are a left hander you would need to move a board right. There are times when your line may become very dry and you need to make a bigger move. I always like to move my feet two boards and my target one board. Some times it takes a lot bigger move like move my feet three boards and my target two or move my feet five boards and my target three boards. There are times when there are a lot of bowlers playing the same area and they dry out a large part of the center of the lane. That when I try a shoot on the outside part of the lane. One thing you need to learn is some kind of spare system. You can just look at a pin and try to hit it. Maybe not the best way but it works for some bowlers. The system I like the best is a straight ball system. One thing you need to learn is how to roll the ball straight. Chris Barns would be a good bowler to watch to learn what I mean by straight. You set up with your thumb up and keep it there all way. This will make the ball roll end over end down the lane. The reason this is the best spare system is it doesn t matter what the lane condition is oily or dry the ball will always roll straight. 3, 6, 9 spare system is a good one and works great for new bowler. This one is easy to learn if you leave a two pin you move your feet three boards right and play your strike target. For a four pin you move your feet six boards and a seven pin you move your feet nine boards. For the three, six, and ten pins move your feet left. There is 4, 8, 12 spare system it s a good system but a little harder to learn. It works the same as the 3, 6, 9 system but you have to change your target for the six and ten pins. The pro bowlers have a saying (strike for show and spare for the dough. I have to go to the masters tournament to take pictures and watch the bowlers. Every year it s the same thing the bowlers that miss a few spares are the ones that always go out early in the tournament. I know a lot of the bowlers that bowl in the masters and when they go out of the tournament I ask them what happened and get the same thing, I missed too many spares. One of the best things a bowler can do to learn the game is get some lessons from a good coach. Most coaches are bowlers too so they learn a lot about the game and can share it with you. It s not just let me watch you bowl and I will fix the things you need. There is a lot to learn about the game and a coach is the best way to learn what you need. Bowlers go to the lanes to practice but most of them just try and make strikes and don t practice any thing. This will in the long run help you be a better bowler. Say you have a problem with your release. What ever your having problems with work on that for 10 to 20 minutes. Then move to something else. Shoot at a ten pin with your first ball and then roll your strike line. That way you get the most frames for your practice. There are all kinds of things to learn about bowling. I was at a tournament to take pictures and a team that just got beat was saying that the team they bowled would ring a cow bell every time they got a strike and hurt the bowling. One guy ask me what do you think about that, his first mistake. I told him to go to your home bowling center with your team and get 5 guys with cow bells to ring them the whole time your bowling and next year if you have to bowl that team it won t affect your team at all. I had a bowler tell me he couldn t make a ten pin at a center that had the above floor ball returns. I told him to practice standing in front of the ball return and take short steps. It works, you just need to practice it a few times. Good Luck on the lanes this year.
