3 A1: Presidents overview of the proposal It is with pleasure that I provide this brief overview of Orange District Cricket Association s submission to host the Inaugural Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships in Orange. The proposal demonstrates the commitment of our Association and the level of support provided by Orange City Council to the staging of this event in Orange and provides information on the City s cricket facilities as well as relevant details regarding accommodation, dining and tourism options for players, officials and supporters. The City of Orange is ideally located just 3 hours drive west of Sydney and is easily accessible by road, rail and air from all corners of Australia. Orange has a proud Cricket history and has become a popular venue for hosting major sporting events, with one of the major factors being the ability of the City to professionally manage events. Should Orange be awarded the rights to host this prestigious event, a committed and experienced team will be established to coordinate the event and to ensure the framework is in place to guarantee it is successful. Our Association, in partnership with Orange City Council, are totally committed to staging the inaugural Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships and we look forward to working with Cricket NSW and Veterans Cricket NSW to host this event and to play our part in the promotion of Veterans Cricket both nationally and within our region. 4 A2: Mayoral message It is with great pleasure that I - on behalf of Orange City Council - provide this message of support to the Orange District Cricket Association in respect of their proposal to host the 2018 Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships. Orange carries a reputation as a leading sporting centre having successfully staged events of regional, state and national significance on a regular basis. The resulting feedback from event organisers has always been extremely positive. Although a thriving regional city with a population of over 40,000, Orange still offers a friendly, relaxed, country atmosphere and I know the residents will go out of their way to make all players, officials and supporters feel welcome during their stay. Given the facilities this City has to offer, combined with the drive, enthusiasm and professionalism of the Orange District Cricket Association, there is no doubt that the inaugural Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships can be successfully staged in Orange. Your favourable consideration to this submission would be greatly appreciated and I look forward to the opportunity of officially welcoming and meeting players, officials and other visitors to our beautiful City. 5 B1: The Venues Wade Park Located just two blocks from the Orange CBD, Wade Park is the undoubtedly the City s premier sportsground and has hosted numerous high profile sporting events across a wide range of sports, including: Sydney Thunder V Hong Kong T20 Big Bash (Dec 2016) NRL Pre-Season Trials Newcastle Knights V Canberra Raiders (2016) A-League Pre Season games featuring the Central Coast Mariners and other A-League teams (2007, 2008 and 2015) NRL Pre-Season Trials Newcastle Knights V Canberra Raiders (2016) NSW Waratahs V Fiji Rugby International (2010) NRL City V Country Origin (2009) Community Centre at Wade Park and the establishment of a Cricket Centre of Excellence that is sure to service up and coming cricketers across Western NSW. Key venue details: 4 pitch turf wicket table Excellent quality outfield with extensive sub soil drainage Dedicated curator solely responsible for maintaining the playing surface and surrounds Field lighting to 400 Lux 700 seat covered grandstand Full LED Screen and Scoreboard Permanent sightscreens (programmed for construction in 2017) Turf practice nets (programmed for construction in 2017) Good quality amenities with large changerooms, umpires room, canteen and corporate area.

6 Wade Park Riawena Oval Located in the leafy West Orange estate of Westlea, Riawena Oval is an excellent venue used solely for cricket. In February 2015, the turf wicket was fully reconstructed. Key venue details: 3 pitch turf wicket table Good quality outfield with automatic irrigation system Fenced boundary Two story Pavilion with changerooms, public toilets, canteen and club room. Scoreboard Riawena Oval

7 Country Club Oval Located in the picturesque ground of the Orange Ex-Services Country Club which includes 18 golf course, bowling greens and licenced Club, the Country Club Oval regularly hosts representative cricket at junior and senior level. Key venue details: 3 pitch turf wicket table Good quality outfield with automatic irrigation system and drainage. Pavilion with changerooms, public toilets, canteen and club room. Field lighting to 100Lux Country Club Oval Sir Jack Brabham Park 1, 2 & 4 A cricket hub in the summer months, Sir Jack Brabham Park boasts 4 cricket ovals (3 turf wickets and 1 synthetic wicket) at the one location making it ideal for cricket carnivals. Worth noting is that Sir Jack Brabham Park located only a short distance away from the Country Club Oval which greatly assists with coordination of events. Key details Three x 3 turf wicket fields All have good quality outfields will automatic irrigation systems. The 3 fields are serviced by 2 amenities buildings on opposite sides of the venue with each having good size changerooms and public toilets.

8 Glenroi Oval Located just a short distance from the Mitchell Highway (Bathurst Road) and numerous accommodation options, Glenroi Oval provides Key venue details: 3 pitch turf wicket table Good quality outfields will automatic irrigation systems Toilet facilities located at the ground and should changerooms be required there is the potential to utilise the adjoining facilities at the Orange Hockey Complex. Additional Turf Wickets Please note that the above mentioned venues are all managed by Orange City Council maintained by fully qualified and experienced greenkeepers. It should be noted that subject to the requirements for the Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships, there is the potential to provide an additional 3 turf wicket for the event. Two located in Orange and the third at Molong which is located just 20 minutes north west of Orange. Synthetic Wickets In the unfortunate event that turf grounds are unavailable during the event due to wash outs, Orange is well serviced for grounds with synthetic wickets and will be able to provide an adequate number of good quality alternate grounds including but not limited to: Max Stewart Park Brendon Sturgeon Oval Anzac Park Sir Jack Brbaham Park No.3 Moulder Park Bletchington Oval Waratah Sports Club Sally Kennett Field

9 B1: Event timing Given the significance of the Australian 0/50 s Cricket Championships, it will be important for the fields to be prepared and presented in the best possible condition whilst managing the existing calendar of events. At this time, Orange City Council would like to propose that the event be conducted in either February 2018 or November Given Orange s cool climate, the start of the cricket season (October) is generally not ideal for wicket preparation however by mid-november all fields are in excellent condition. Please note that November 2017 can t be considered as Orange will already be hosting the 2017 NSW PSSA Cricket Championships from November As you may be aware the Orange District Junior Cricket Association host the U/13 & U/15 Western NSW Cricket Carnivals over a two week period in early January each year. At the conclusion of these Carnivals the turf wickets begin to show obvious signs of wear and tear from the extensive use. To enable adequate time for the wickets to be rejuvenated and prepared for the Australian 0/50 s Cricket Championships, it would be appreciated if consideration could be given to staging the event in mid to late February Council is happy to discuss options for event dates further if required.

10 B2: Centrality of location ROAD Orange is located in Central New South Wales 257km west of Sydney (3 hour drive) via the Great Western and Mitchell Highways and 295km north of Canberra making it ideally located to host the Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships. Orange Perfectly located

11 RAIL OR COACH The train departs several times a day from Sydney Central Station and travels through some of Australia s most beautiful countryside. Book online with NSW Trainlink at or call Australia Wide Coaches also provide a daily service to and from Sydney and Canberra on a luxury coach. Australia Wide Coaches

12 AIR Orange is serviced daily by Regional Express (Rex). Regular flights connect Sydney direct to Orange with a flight time of less than 45 minutes. Charter services are also available into the newly expanded Orange Regional Airport, which is located 10 minutes from the Orange CBD. Orange Regional Airport serviced by Regional Express

13 B3: Accommodation & meals Accommodation In line with its status as a regional city, Orange can offer sporting teams a full range of accommodation options - from caravan parks to top-star rating motel accommodation. 14 Restaurants and eating establishments Orange has the buzz of a hip dining destination with many extraordinary culinary options including three Good Food Guide one hat restaurants. The cafe culture is very strong in Orange and is continually changing and evolving. Every month there are new establishments opening which continually builds on the exciting vibrancy of the restaurant and cafe scene. Of particular interest for sporting teams is that Orange has a number of restaurants available to accommodate large groups many of which are willing to arrange special deals to visiting sporting teams. Some 43 eating establishments operate in Orange, with details contained in Appendix B of this proposal.

15 B4: Tourist Attractions Orange is known as Australia s Colour City. It s four distinct seasons influence the landscape to form a rich colour amongst spectacular parks and gardens. Orange possesses a blend of sophisticated city environment punctuated with historic landmarks and surrounded by the most beautiful countryside. The vineyards and orchards on the slopes of Mt Canobolas and the surrounding area of Orange produce some of the finest cool climate wines and orchard fruit apples, cherries and stone fruit, in Australia. The district is also a major producer of a range of quality fruit and vegetables, meats raised on the sweet upland pastures as well as olive oil, olives, verjus, nuts, jams and preserves. 16 B5: Medical facilities Orange is a provider of excellent medical facilities, in view of its status as a regional centre; with specialists in virtually every field of medicine being domiciled in the City. In the unfortunate event of players falling ill or being injured and requiring hospitalisation, the following facilities would be available: Orange Regional Base Hospital Opened in March 2011 the new $250M Orange Regional Base Hospital provides state of the art health care and is the envy of Cities across Australia. Dudley Private Hospital Dudley Private Hospital is a 65-bed private hospital, offering the ultimate in hospital facilities. Orange Regional Base Hospital

17 B6: Media coverage One of the major advantages that regional centres have over metropolitan areas is the level of media coverage attracted through the staging of major sporting events. In regard to Cricket events staged in Orange over the past 10 years, publicity has been quite staggering - with extensive coverage through the television, newspaper and radio. Given the status of the Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships, similar coverage could confidently be anticipated. Television WIN and Prime7 have their regional offices based in the City with both producing a nightly regional news program. These stations service a regional viewing audience of approximately 400,000 viewers. From previous experience, events like the Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships will receive extensive coverage - supported, in most instances, by footage of event action, combined with interviews with officials and event co-ordinators. Newspapers Over recent years, there has been a networking of the local print media, which involves the following major centres of Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow, Wellington, Dubbo, Parkes and Cowra The effect of this networking has been to provide excellent coverage of an event to an extensive regional circulation. As with television coverage, previous major sporting events have received extensive coverage. Radio Orange, Dubbo and Bathurst are all serviced by commercial radio and, from Orange s experience, a preview and summary will be incorporated as part of the local news programming. ABC Radio (2CR) serves the regional area from Lithgow to Broken Hill. The highlight of coverage from the ABC is Michael Croke s Saturday Sports Show, which rates approximately 40%, and Michael always gives ample coverage to major sporting events (either coming up or happening) within the region. The regional media infrastructure is extensive - and, more importantly, supportive of major activities taking place within the region. Based on past experience, the event can expect a high level of coverage, which can only improve our sport s profile.

18 B7: Event co-ordination & management Responsibilities Given the status of the Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships, a Coordinating Committee made up of representatives from the Orange District Cricket Association, Orange City Council and Veterans Cricket NSW will be established. This group will have the following responsibilities: venue preparation event promotion catering event management liaison with relevant officials team liaison This Committee would bring with it a wealth of experience in the management of major sporting events, combined with a totally professional outlook. Orange City Council is very supportive of major sporting events conducted within the City and is only too willing to provide any assistance required to ensure the success of the event.

19 B8: Promotion of Cricket The sport of Cricket is extremely well established and recognised in the Central West and Western Regions; and it is felt that the awarding of the Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships to Orange would increase the sport s profile even further. As stated in the Media Coverage section of this proposal, the Championships will receive extensive media exposure; and the event will provide an ideal opportunity to showcase the sport of Cricket at a high level. The staging of the event in Orange will receive a high level of regional support and will be an ideal opportunity to promote our sport to prospective new players to the ongoing benefit of our sport. The staging of the event will have a positive effect on domestic Cricket.

20 C1: Submission summary It is with pleasure that the Orange District Cricket Association in partnership with Orange City Council, put forward this detailed proposal to host the inaugural Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships in Orange. A detailed proposal has been prepared for the following reasons: 1. given the nature of the Championships, it is felt that a submission of this detail is required to match the status of the event; 2. it enables those who will be assessing venues for the event to make an informed decision in respect of Orange; and 3. it reflects the commitment of the Orange District Cricket Association and the City of Orange to the successful hosting of this prestigious event. It is felt that Orange has much to offer as a host city, with excellent Cricket facilities, a wide range of accommodation and restaurants, many attractions and friendly people - all set in a beautiful and clean environment. Orange has a proud tradition in sport and has played host to many major sporting events in the past; and, on each occasion, the City has drawn praise in respect of the quality of its facilities, its organisational ability and the friendliness of its people. In the event of Orange being selected to host the Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships, you can be assured: top-class facilities a central location, easily accessible by players and supporters a well-organised and professionally managed event a close working liaison with Cricket NSW and Veterans Cricket NSW officials a well-promoted and publicised event excellent accommodation, medical and ancillary facilities an event that will raise even further the profile of veterans cricket in our Region Your favourable consideration to our proposal to host the Australian O/50 s Cricket Championships would be greatly appreciated.
