4 P A G E 4 President s Perspective - May 2014 As President of BCSC I feel very fortunate to have this forum to express my opinion on subjects that usually pertain to association business. However, this month, I m going to stray a little and talk about the bowling industry. I received an earlier this week asking if I would be attending the USBC convention, and my response was, Is there still a USBC Convention? Now that statement will no doubt piss off many people. I, of course, know there is a USBC Convention and I ll be the first to admit that I didn t know it was this week, until I saw of few of my Facebook friends posting pictures from Reno saying they were there for the convention. Shame on me for not keeping informed of the industry happenings. However in my defense, the USBC convention has very little impact on my overall bowling business. This is why I asked if there is still a convention. The real question I m asking is what relevance is USBC today to the overall bowling business? Or maybe I should ask what is USBC doing at their convention to change the way they are doing business (I mean how is it that we still publish an local average book)? As bowling proprietors we are forced to look at ways to stay relevant in the eyes of our customers. We need to invest in our physical plant, hiring & training personnel, marketing the different products & services we offer inside the bowling center, to name a few. USBC has been such a big and important part of our industry s history it would be great if they could be a part of its future. My question not only to them but to us is what role should they play? Do we have the courage to change our paradigm?
5 V O L U M E 1 8, I S S U E 5 P A G E 5 Executive Director Report Giddy for Googie Stop. Did you just do a double reading the above headline? Were you expecting an l instead of an i? Did Frager make another one of his trademark typos? Nope. I can say for certain that I am not talking about the multinational Internet company that changed the way we see and experience the modern world around us, but about the Googie architectural movement that changed the way many millions of Americans viewed bowling in the 1940s- 60s. Anyone born in, or a fan of, Southern CA would instantly recognize the dramatic designs that grew out of the imaginations of the jet and atomic ages. This month the BCSC had the privilege of sponsoring an exhibit titled Bowl-A-Rama a exhibition on the iconic mid-century bowling centers of Southern CA. The exhibit boldly curated at the Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles, shed a warm-and-fuzzy mixture of bright neon and amber light radiating from original artifacts saved from some of the most shining examples of Googie-style bowling centers of yester-year. For bowling to be recognized as a ground-breaking industry in the 1940s- 50s could possibly be dismissed as borderline passé. However, to be honored by some of today s top architectural preservationists, designers and architects for the special role our forefathers played in creating an architectural movement is about as close as we can get to winning a National Design Medal of Honor, if such an honor existed. We in Southern CA were so darn giddy about this exhibit that we had to help underwrite it. I m so proud of the Bowling Centers of Southern CA, International Bowling Industry, Pinz Bowling Center and Bowlmor AMF for making the financial commitments to help bring this exhibit to life. Take a peek on Page 8, and you will enjoy being transported back to a time when bowling centers, like automobiles, had fins and looked as if they were literally going places! There were no big-box bowling in this era. The buildings, like the proprietors, were larger than life characters. Same could be said, by the way, of the mastermind architects of the day. None so grand, as Gordon Powers, architect and last surviving principal of the architectural firm Powers, Daly and DeRosa. You too can visit the exhibit at A+D Museum, through May 11 (maybe longer) at 6032 Wilshire Boulevard, LA CA

There are "unofficial" companies aggressively pursuing attendees and exhibitors to book hotel rooms through their companies at supposedly significant discounts. Unfortunately, some past attendees and exhibitors have fallen prey to these companies and have experienced: * Loss of significant deposits * Relocation with little or no warning * Lesser guest room then they thought they had booked * Lesser reservations at a different hotel than they thought they had confirmed This has caused great hardships to these individuals and companies. NOTE: Reservations made through an agency other than Connections Housing will be at your own risk. If you have been contacted, please let us know at

Some 17 students representing centers in a dozen states plus Ontario, Canada are at the International Bowling Campus in Arlington, Texas. During the week, they will cover topics like Marketing, Parties/ Group Events, Leadership, Human Resources, Food & Beverage, Youth, Operational Measurements, Demographics, Daypart Management, Revenue Management and League/Casual Bowlers. They will also take a field trip to a local Family Entertainment Center for a hands-on look at what it takes to be successful. 10 P A G E 1 0 MEMBERSHIP SPOTLIGHT Dominic DeLuca Admiral Robinson Recreation Center (at Naval Base San Diego), San Diego, CA - 40 lanes I m not going to say it s not a challenge, says Dom DeLuca about running the center, where he s been manager since It s just not as difficult as being stressed out thinking you have 150 people coming this weekend and whether they ll be able to get on the base, or am I going to have to deal with security and upset customers on the day of the event? He s referring to the 6-12 outside tournaments he hosts in an average year on a rotating schedule with other San Diego bowls, Robinson being a USBC-certified center with USBC members. Active and retired military, Department of Defense civilians, their families, and guests of any of these groups are automatically qualified to bowl at the center but bowlers in events coming from off-base have to be cleared by security, including background checks. Once personal info on the bowlers is submitted to DeLuca and he sends it on to his boss, who manages recreation on the base, it s out of DeLuca s hands. And the biggest thing in bowling is you have to have control. The day of the event comes around, you re just praying that everything s going to go smoothly. I ve had complete events I had the plug pulled on because they [said] at the gate, Somebody above us decided not to allow this to happen. Talk about fun? Not fun! Still the outside events come, doing their share in racking up the total of 1,000 games per day on average at Robinson. We have the best center, DeLuca says proudly, adding that he s in a good competitive situation to pick up the events because San Diego is down to four centers in the city. Part of his success is in keeping his amenities up to snuff, DeLuca says, giving the example of his 200 person Friday night league. When they come in and bowl, I would bet less than 10% talk to my staff other than maybe going to the cafe to get something to eat or talking to a bartender to get something to drink. They go right down to the lanes and bowl. The experience is going to be driven 100% by how well the machines operated, how well they bowled, and whether they won or lost. We can t help them in a lot of those areas, he says, but for other bowlers the experience begins with the staff. And the secret there, as DeLuca puts it: You subconsciously put yourself on the other side of the counter. How do you want to be treated? I want to be treated right, with a smile. He could have added his personal reason for loving his job, because a boss s values spill over into his staff. I love being around people. You can t ask for a better job, says DeLuca, than you come to work where people are coming to have fun.
11 V O L U M E 1 8, I S S U E 5 P A G E PEPSI GLASS FRONT VENDING CONTEST WINNER CONCOURSE LANES BEFORE AFTER In cooperation with Pepsi, we were able to run a contest that included all centers that used a glass front vending machine. The goal was to maximize the current Pepsi products each center had. The randomly selected winner received an upgrade including; detailed plan-o-gram, 12 cases of product, and consultation from Pepsi representatives. Concourse Bowling Center in Anaheim was this year s winner. Thanks for all who participated and for Pepsi s help in better utilizing your product. BOWLING XTRAVAGANZA VIRTUAL TOURNAMENT Over the past few months an in-league competition has been happening across Southern California. It was an over-average contest that awarded the winner with a trip to the Bowling Xtravaganza in Las Vegas. Each center that participated had their bowlers qualify during league play. The bowler that bowled the most pins over average won from each center. Those bowlers then bowled virtually against each other during their regular scheduled league play. Out of all the centers that participated, we had our winner come from Bowlium Lanes in Montclair, CA. Winner; Cecilia Smart shot 71 pins over her average. Great bowling and have fun on your trip, Cecilia!
