POP UP PUB NIGHT 8th July, 7.30pm At the recent Hog Roast a few of the Braxtedites who attended thought it would be great to have some sort of regular social activity in the village to, in some part, take the place of a local. Perhaps one evening a month. To get the ball rolling there will be a social evening at the Pavilion on Friday 8th from Just pop along at any time, bring a drink and some nibbles and meet your neighbours. Hopefully we can also discuss possible formats for future evenings and gauge how many people are interested. No need to rsvp - just turn up. Braxted dog of the month Ziggy, who belongs to the Knight family from Little Braxted, all dressed up for the Hog Roast on 11 June. BRAXTED GARDEN AND SOCIAL CLUB The AGM of the Braxted Garden & Social Club was held on Thursday 16th June 2016 in The Braxted Pavilion. Several members were away or unable to attend, so there were only fourteen of us. The Committee agreed to continue for another year although Barry Grainger will not want to continue after that, so we will be wanting a new committee member for 2017 please. It was decided to have an outing this year to Wimpole Hall Royston, which is a National Trust property, on Sunday 11th September As well as the house and gardens, there are plenty of activities for children, so all family and friends are welcome to join us for an enjoyable day. The next meeting will be the annual Harvest Fish & Chip Supper on Saturday 22nd October After the meeting everyone enjoyed the usual Cheese & Wine refreshments, a good ending to a pleasant evening. Hope to see you all soon. Jenny Hornett

BRAXTED OPEN GARDENS 8th June On one of the few hot and sunny days in June the Braxted Park NGS Open Garden attracted some 500 visitors raising funds for Horatio s Garden. Gallons of tea and accompanying scones and cake were consumed and the gardens looked lovely. BRAXTED Bulletin Apologies for lateness this month. I had a little accident which put me back a few days. Am increasingly busy with my job of late and find it hard to find the time to put magazine together, so if anyone would like to take the Bulletin on please let me know! 5

BRAXTED PAVILION 11th June 2016 The Great Braxted Pavilion Management Committee wanted to hold a reception for all those people and organisations that helped in the extension and refurbishment of the Pavilion. In fact it was a requirement of some of the donations that we acknowledged them in this way. With the final completion more or less coinciding with the Queen s official birthday it was decided to have a party for the village as well so it was decided to hold the reception at 1 pm with the party starting at 2 pm as our guest the Rt. Hon Priti Patel MP declared it open. A cash bar was provided with a subsidy from Alec of the Commodity Centre and a free hog roast was provided for all residents and guests, funded by the National Lottery and organised by Gordon Mussett the Clerk to Little Braxted Parish Council. Priti Patel with Peter Hennessy and Roger Smith, two air ambulance volunteers, at the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust stand. The raffle on behalf of the Air Ambulance raised 604. The weather was extremely kind (until about 5 pm!) and in excess of 100 people enjoyed themselves. The Essex and Herts Air ambulance were invited to have a stand there and a raffle was held for their benefit. Our villages and community have seen the demise of facilities and over the last few years we have lost our Post Office, the two village shops and one of our pubs. The Pavilion, originally built about 40 years ago for cricket, has been used for a variety of meetings; our polling station; and events, but we felt that the community needed more of a focal point. But we had very little money. The committee delegated David Joyce and Ken Hornett to see what could be done. To cut a long story short, David was the moneyman and Ken the administrator. A total of well over 80,000 was raised in six months. We would like to thank a number of people and organisations for their considerable help in achieving what is now a valuable asset. They include: Donald Rees, president of the Cricket Club and chair of the committee for many years until He was and is our inspiration and motivation. David Joyce for the wonderful effort in raising the monies. George Traer-Clark the architect for the design and plans Andy Holt for being the Project Manager Jim Goodey the local builder for the works The people of Gt and Lt Braxted who donated over 12,000 10

The charities & organisations that provided the majority of the funds: The Essex County Council Community Initiative Fund The Essex Community Fund/Little Braxted Community & Educational Fund The Garfield Weston Foundation The Rank Foundation The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation The Parish Councils of Gt & Lt Braxted The Granville Group for gratis services We must also mention the Rural Community Council of Essex who gave us guidance and advice. We now have a pavilion which is a multi purpose asset for our community. It is already widely used something like 200 times a year Cricket in the summer; two art groups, a garden club; a whist club, dog training group, pilates and keep fit sessions; meetings such as the council; polling station (twice this year) and many private hires for birthday parties, The official opening of the Pavilion by the Roght Hon Priti Parel MP anniversaries etc. There have been a number of village Pop Up Suppers which hopefully will continue. 11

GREAT BRAXTED & TIPTREE CRICKET CLUB The season so far The club s season, competing in Division Four of a restructured North Essex Cricket League, got off to a winning start on 1st May with a 22-runs home victory against Rayne, followed the next week by an overwhelming 10-wickets away win at Chappel & Wakes Colne, who were bowled out for just 87 before this season s GB&T captain, Sean Hummerstone, and fellow-opener Alan Cookson knocked off the 88 runs needed in under an hour and just 15.5 overs. Our visit to Coggeshall Town on 22nd May saw the first loss, by 33 runs, despite the heroic effort of Rob Hill, who finished on 76 not out. On 5th June the club bounced back with a 44-runs victory at High Ridge against Tendring, despite a dramatic collapse in the GB&T innings from 166 for 2 to 178 all out, with four wickets (including a hattrick) falling in the final over. Tendring, though, were never in the chase and scored only 134 for 6 from their 40 overs. On 19th June GB&T were soundly beaten by 177 runs by current division 4 leaders, Galleywood, at Slades Lane. This leaves GB&T in 3rd position at the end of June. Two other fixtures (both at home), against Boxted on 12th June and Great Horkesley & Lexden on 26th June, fell victim to the soggy June weather. Spectators are very welcome to any of our matches: our next home games (weather permitting!) are on 24th and 31st July. David Lamming Fixture Secretary Not what it seems: the Rayne wicketkeeper failed to hold on to this catch offered by Alan Cookson on 1st May. 12

Players wanted The club is always on the lookout for new players, especially younger players from the villages of Great Braxted and Tiptree. If you are interested in playing for the club, or know someone who might be interested, please get in touch with Sean Hummerstone: Weekly reports You can follow the fortunes of the club on the North Essex Cricket League website. There is a weekly roundup of all the previous weekend s matches posted on a Wednesday. Go on Scores: 1 May: GB&T 121 for 6 beat Rayne 99 all out by 22 runs 8 May: Chappel & Wakes Colne 87 lost to GB&T 88 for 0 by 10 wickets 22 May: Coggeshall Town 185 beat GB&T 152 by 33 runs 5 June: GB&T 178 for 9 beat Tendring 134 for 6 by 44 runs 19 June: Galleywood 257 for 4 beat GB&T 80 all out by 177 runs. Fixtures in July Sunday 3 July: Real Oddies (away) Sunday 10 July: Great Horkesley & Lexden (away) Sunday 17 July: Rayne (away) Sunday 24 July: Coggeshall Town (home) Sunday 31 July: Chappel & Wakes Colne (home) Alan Cookson hooking Ben Jackson to the boundary during his unbeaten innings of 46 against Chappel & Wakes Colne on 8th May. Sam Yeates setting off for a run against Coggeshall Town on 22nd May. A big hit by Mark Stefanani during his innings of 50 against Tendring on 5th June. An athletic caught and bowled by Tendring s Hughes-Day to dismiss Tom Hummerstone for 11 on 5th June. 13

It was well attended, and all the animals and their owners were well behaved, even Percy the parrot did not have a lot to say. Everyone was very generous and the collection raised 100 which has been sent to The Cinnamon Trust.
