1 March 4, 2010 BOWLING NEWS Page 1 Thursday, March 4, 2010 California Bowling News P.O. Box 4160, Downey, CA Online: news@californiabowlingnews.com Orleans Casino Hosts Storm Golden Ladies Classic The tournament is open to all women over the age of fifty LAS VEGAS The Storm Golden Ladies Tournament isn t just an ordinary bowling tournament. This year, almost 80 bowlers entered the event and, although it is a highly competitive event, it is a social event. It is more like a tea party, and a chance for old friends to gather and enjoy themselves in friendly competition. Nevertheless, the Golden Ladies tournament goes a long way in determining the Senior Woman Bowler of the Year. It is a USBC sanctioned event. This Golden Ladies tournament is the brainchild of golden-haired Jeanette Robinson and ably aided by her silver-haired hubby, Dick Porter. Of course it is obvious that the entire Orleans staff, led by Mike Kaufman, is behind the tournament to help make the women feel at home. I ve known Jeanette since she lived in Flint, Michigan. I had the distinct pleasure of by John Jowdy coaching her at the BPAA All-Star tournament back in the 70 s. Jeanette, surely one of the greatest ambassadors of the game, inaugurated this tournament back at the old Showboat Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center in Vegas. This occasion marks the 20th anniversary of this classic event. Make no mistake; the Golden Ladies Classic is strictly a two-person production. While Jeanette tends to all the details regarding the tournament, Dick scampers all over the place making sure all the ladies are being served water or whatever drinks they desire, and, if needed, any medical attention. The Orleans management arranged special room rates of 40. The entry fee is 150 with 100% of the entry fee returned with prize money distributed on a 1 to 5 basis. The winner is guaranteed All bowl- George Galindo Wins ABT Championship at Carter Lanes FULLERTON George Galindo won his second Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT) championship at AMF Carter Lanes on Saturday, February 27, 2010 during our 3-game Beat-the-Board tournament. George bowled in the 12 noon squad and shot games of 236, 246 and 259 with handicap for a series total of 746 and the 310 1st place prize plus 470 from the Progressive Pot. Jan Fishburn came in second shooting a 708 with handicap. Low to cash was +68. Our newest championship, George Galindo, works as a Manager for CVT. George has three children, Russell, Jacob and George, II. George has been bowling for about three years. He does his league bowling at Tustin Lanes and AMF Carter Lanes and sports a high game of 276 and a high series of 641. George was using a Brunswick Rampage and Black Widow drilled by Ramon Torres, at the R&E Pro Shop at AMF Carter Lanes, for the win this weekend. George wanted to thank Michele Stern for her support and encouragement and Ramon Torres for helping him with his game and taking care of his equipment. George also wanted to thank continued on page 11 AMF Carter Lanes for hosting the tournament and the ABT directors for running an outstanding tournament. The winner of the Senior Sweeper was George Galindo. The winner of the 2-Game Sweeper was Greg Neuer. Our mystery score was drawn after our final squad. The game drawn was 157 (game 2) and the mystery series was 543. There were no winners. The mystery pots are open to all members and costs 5. The ABT staff and membership would like to thank the management and staff at Carter Lanes for hosting our tournament. Our next scheduled event will be March 6-7 at Linbrook Bowl. INDIANAPOLIS Bill O Neill of Southampton, Pa., who earned a can t miss tag after his Professional Bowlers Association Rookie of the Year season, cruised past defending champion Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, , to win his first major title in the 67th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open at Woodland Bowl Sunday. O Neill, who won his first Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title earlier in the season in Detroit, had a spare in the first frame, failed to convert the 2-10 split in the second, and then threw 10 strikes in a row to race away to victory. Along with his title, he earned 60,000 and a three-year PBA Tour exemption. This title means everything to me. I can t begin to explain it, he said. It s the most difficult title on tour to win. To have my name up there will the guys who have won it is amazing. I can t believe I bowled a game like that on this lane condition, the 28-year-old O Neill said. I found a little hold area and that s all I needed. It was just a matter of bearing down and making good 6 Gamer st Place NEW DAY AND START TIME!! check-in SUNDAY, Mar. 21st at 5PM 4:30 Entry Fee: 50 Optional - Sidepots 6 - Blocks 4 Call Alan at (949) for more info. I don t know why, but from the time I got up this morning and came into the center, everything felt great. Even after throwing that split in the second frame, I knew I was going to throw the ball great. Scroggins has beaten me, like, the last 34 times I ve bowled him, so it was nice to get some payback. Scroggins never found a solid line to the pocket, failing to put two strikes together until the 10th frame. But it was a pocket 7-10 split in the eighth frame that clinched the win for O Neill. At start of the match, my thumb shrunk just a bit and I was afraid to add a piece of tape because I didn t want to hang up in the ball, Scroggins said. I was losing it just enough, so when I put the tape in the ball in the seventh frame, I got back to the pocket. But Bill bowled well. All of the strikes looked the same, so you know he was throwing the ball well, Scroggins added. With his victory, O Neill also jumped into the thick of the PBA Player of the Year race with only four tournaments remaining in the season. I picked up a couple of points on Walter Ray (Williams Jr.), but you know he ll make a couple of more TV shows before the season is over, O Neill said. I ll just have to try to win another one. O Neill earned his berth in the title match by defeating Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., , after Jones romped past Jason Couch of Clermont, Fla., , in the opening match. In the first game, Jones threw seven strikes in the first eight frames to win easily, but when the oil began to move, he got lost against O Neill, leaving and failing to convert four splits. Do Scratch Bowlers Deserve Better? by Dustin Markowitz LAUGHLIN A familiar sight caught my attention this last week. A bowler, who shall remain nameless, was on pace to shoot an 800 series. The bowler in question had done this several times before but I found it almost disheartening to see that no one seemed to really care except his friends in the league and several of the scratch bowlers. When he stuck a ten-pin to miss the coveted score by six pins the general consensus among the masses was one of humor that he failed and that it wasn t a big deal. I sincerely beg to differ. Now I will fully admit that I am not your typical ham and egg handicap bowler. I am a 220+ average bowler with several honor scores and tournament accolades to my credit. I ve been bowling for over twenty years and have seen how the sport has changed. With that being said I know how difficult it is to keep your composure and to achieve an award. However just because you have done it before doesn t mean it means any less to you. So the question then becomes why don t the scratch bowlers get respect? Many would argue that the current state of the sport is what causes the masses to dismiss the magnitude of an honor score. Again you will receive no argument from me in regards to the average inflation over the last several years. You will receive no argument that the equipment is better. However the argument I will make is that the pressure is the same now as it was then. The simple fact seems that in today s modern game we punish the better bowlers for being better. It is a horrible injustice to discredit a scratch bowler simply for being good. What right does a person have to ridicule or short change someone who practices regularly, buys modern equipment and averages high? Have we really allowed our sport to become so convoluted that this thought process is the norm? It is almost sickening to think this way but it seems to be the truth. So to all of you once a week bowlers out there I say take a second and realize that it s still an honor to shoot numbers. It s still a privilege to be known as a perfect bowler. It s still a great sport and, to this bowler, those who take the time to better themselves deserve respect. I can only hope you feel the same. I had just finished bowling the first night of league play when I felt an overwhelming desire to cry. I took off for the ladies room and managed to settle into a stall before the tears started flowing. I completely lost control of my emotions. I was crying like a baby, I was a mess! What was the cause of my emotional upset? It can be found in the following events that lead up to the first night of league play. It was August, With husband and two children we moved to San Diego from Chicago. My parents and sister with her family had already preceded our arrival. We all made the move to California for the health reasons of my dad. It was a good time to relocate as our children were young and our employment included job transfers from Chicago to San Diego. All members of our families were avid bowlers. Settling in the North Park area of San Diego dad had already checked out the nearest bowling alley named Aztec Bowl. With the new bowling season soon to begin I was anxious to get signed into a league. I met with the Aztec Bowl manager and expressed my desire to be on a team in a ladies scratch league. I got lucky, there was one opening and my impressive 189 book average was helpful in my placement. The 7 PM ladies scratch league would begin the week after Labor Day. I expressed my thanks for the league spot and left with a wonderful feeling of belonging. The day finally came and I was ready. With my shoes freshly polished, ball nice and clean, and wearing my favorite bowling outfit I felt good. As I entered the bowling alley the butterflies started fluttering in my stomach. I thought oh no please - not tonight. My name was on my shirt so my teammates found me as soon as I approached the control desk. They were so friendly and made me feel so much at ease that the butterflies settled down. We discussed the team line up. Having the highest average on the team the anchor spot was mine if I wanted it. No problem, I bowled the anchor position for my previous teams and felt very confident I could handle it. As the alley lights came on there was an announcement over the loud speaker stating there would be five minutes of shadow balls. I thought to myself shadow balls! How in the world does one make a shadow ball? The bowlers quickly lined up and took turns throwing their balls at make believe pins. Well, I never saw such foolishness. One of my teammates said come on, get in line, this is our warm up session. That made sense, so I got in line and when my turn came I threw my ball at the pins that weren t there. Then I spotted my Dad standing on the concourse smiling at me and nodding his head in approval. He knew exactly what was going through my mind. The bowling leagues in the Chicago land area do not have shadow balls. They begin their league play cold turkey a warm up session was definitely not allowed. I am a California gal now so decided I best pay attention and do what everyone else does. Shadow balls are over and we finally begin bowling with real pins. Dad managed to give me a few words of encouragement before he left. He emphasized not to be nervous, just relax. He never hangs around to watch me bowl unless we are having a practice session. I was ready, felt relaxed and confident that I was going to bowl well. I had to bowl well. After requesting a ladies scratch league and taking the anchor spot I better bowl well. It never happened! I bowled like a beginner. My ball couldn t find the pocket. I am a good spare shooter but sure missed a lot LAS VEGAS TRAVEL LEAGUE By Alice Meglemre FOUNTAIN VALLEY The final trip this season to Fountain Bowl, Southern California s only PBA stop, resulted in a couple of 600 shooters and plenty of team action to better positions. Karen Mauricio fired , followed by Cyndie Martin , Jerry Whitehurst , Virginia Gray , Aresia McGee , Ana Fukuchi , Dee Phipps , Betty Phillips , Jamie Vallier , Gladys Perrin 512, Melba Knight 509, Marianne Mathers 508, Charron McKnight , Mary Dixon and Kathy Parrish tied on 504, Roberta McNaught and Doris Lewis tied on 503. Keystone #2 still tops standing at 59 wins with only 6 games left to bowl. Fountain Bowl #2 has 55, followed by Cal Bowl #1, 52, Doris Hair Designs 50.2, Cal #2, 50 and the rest of the league is closely bunched from 46 wins to cellar team, and the only one to have cinched their positon, at Individual season high scratch games and series are still targets, as well as high team game and series. Betty Phillips ( sheet service) and Barbara Bishop are off to Vegas this weekend for the women s pro action so please bring recap sheets to me. Also, Vi Wilson and Doris Lewis will do the optional brackets this week. NEXT WEEK: Monday 9 a.m. March 8th league meeting in Cal Bowl conference room and bowling at 10 a.m. Sweeps rules and other business is slated along with election of officers for the next (54th) season. A short Vegas sweeps meeting will follow the league meeting. of spares. My teammates were gracious, told me I probably had first night jitters, no big deal, just relax. When the second game started I began counting my steps to myself. That didn t help. My hands were cold, a cup of hot coffee helped a little. My second game was a little better but considerably below my average. I wanted to go home told the girls they would do better by taking my average less ten pins. They wouldn t hear of it. So with tongue in cheek I stuck it out. We managed to win the last game in spite of my low score. As soon as I finished the last frame of that last game I made a dash for the ladies room. I could feel the tears coming. I was so embarrassed I just had to get away. I didn t think the tears would ever stop. One of my teammates came looking for me. Feel better honey?, she asked. I showed myself with my red eyes, and a red nose that I was still blowing. I guess so was my reply. She gave me a hug, and let me know that my tears showed I had a good heart. The team still wanted me and hoped the next tear session would be for high scoring. Are the tears worth it? Yes, indeed they are!

5 March 4, 2010 BOWLING NEWS Page 5 American Bowlers Tournament Association P.O. Box 3721, Santa Fe Springs, CA Cell: Galluzzo Wins First ABTA Title at Westminster ALL POTS CARRY OVER TO THIS WEEK Match Game 3,500 Match Series est is 900 Chaparral Lanes in Two Day Event This Week Qualify Saturday 200 Bonus Saturday Noon-1:00-2:30-4:00-5:30 & 7:00 PM 1 in 4 ½ to Semis Sunday One Big Squad at 10:30AM Takes 1 in 4 1/2 Semis 12:00 Noon WESTMINSTER Westminster Lanes was the host and Sal Galluzzo was the man, finally winning his first ABTA title and taking home a tidy 3,000 on home to Montebello. Good things happen to Good people and Sal is one of the best as he edged Jirades Harnpatanakitpanich whom we will call BK :) on the final ball Ṡal bested 195 entries who braved the nasty weather, and saw cut scores of Men +40 and the ladies even better at +45. With 50 bowlers to cash, advancing to the semifinals including Super Seniors added to the board Adam Drozdz, Vic Paolucci and Bobbie Mc Collum. They would bowl three games in the semis in hopes of making the top 16 single elims. The semis began and ended with BK topping the field at +109 followed by Sal Galluzzo So we had BK sit out to bowl the title game with Sal receiving a first round bye in the top 16. It took a nice +52 to make the sweet 16 including 4 ladies. Round One was on and losers were Paul Passarino, Bobbie Mc Collum, Dominic Tambio, Lonzell Burnett, Julie Nguyen, Ely Cruz, and Jason Buenviaje. They got checks of 100. Round two had Leo Silva, Greg Velarde, Ada Wong and Jeff Taino lose out and were 6-9th places and 110 each. Round three had Sal Galluzzo edge Jeremy Paulsen Ariel O Campo got to Hazel Castillo So Hazel and Jeremy were 4th and 5th with great bowling. Sal and Ariel (brother in laws in fact : ) to meet for the right to bowl for the title vs BK. Sal stepped up in a close win, with Ariel in 3rd with fine bowling, with Sal off to the title game. The title game was now underway and both bowlers were struggling at the outset as perhaps this pair was on the tough side. Due to a split and open by Sal and only one open by BK in the first three frames they settled down and were clean but no doubles and going to the 10th frame Sal struck every time on the left lane and finally finished at 208. BK needing a mark to win, it went wide leaving the rail and needing to pick it up for the win, then tugged the shot a bit, and left the 1-2. The title went to Sal 176/ /203. Exciting finish for the fans for sure. Great bowling by Sal who is surely one of the nicer fellows around. It is great to see him finally win one and finally a higher finish now than lovely wife Miriam :-) Sal is very competitive, Great Bowling! Great bowling by BK who again almost got his first title and Ariel also who almost got to the title game. Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Jerry Chang +164, and Cathy Lopez +111 led the ladies. Both get paid entries to any regular event. National Deaf Bowling News by Connie Marchione Results of 26th SN-CDBA Tournament At Canyon Lanes In Cabazon; Malucci 795, DeGroff 747 Helps Team To First Place With Record 2976 CABAZON With an entry of 25 teams in a 24-lane house, SN-CDBA secretary-treasurer Stan Booth had to use two squads for the entire tournament. Ken DeGroff, L.A. who has a current 246 average asked Carl Malucci, L.V. who carries a 246 book to join him and two lower average L.A. bowlers Bill Cozad and Gardy Rodgers for a team. Their Avatar Kingpins clicked together as a perfect team as DeGroff s leadoff 747 ( ), Cozad s 547 (226), Rodgers 536 (202) and Malucci s anchor 795 ( ) produced games of for a scratch 2625 plus only Cozad/Rodgers combined handicap 351 for new tournament record 2976 to take first place 440 prize. Although DeGroff s 747 and Malucci s 795 got no handicap, the team is perfect because with Cozad s +180/727 and Rodgers +171/707 all scored 700 plus in their record 2976 total replacing the old record 2951 made in 2003 by a San Diego team. Second place 320 went to Fantastix 4 team from Orange County with Phil Sanchez s 670 ( ) helping Paul Sanchez, Jeff Stansell and Phil Hawkins to 2331 plus 605 for Super San Diego s for 2863 took 3rd place 260 with Rogue Summers from Northern California starring the team with 614 ( ). Seventh and 100 last place prize went to host Angel West #1 s 2840 with Francisco Navarro starring with 650 ( ). Only strong team to cash, No Fear from Northern California in 6th place for 120 with 2540 plus 303 handicap for Daniel Vasquez Jr. starred with for 712. The other strong team failing to cash with 2819 for 10th place, So. Cal. All-Stars with three Deaflympicans Robert Ellison (600) Ed Abakumoff (622) and star Darrell Stogryn ( /754) and anchor Mark Fisser (289/675) hit team games of for the new record scratch 2651 series. That is almost 100 pins better than the old record of 2566 made by So. Calif. Deaf Bowlers A in Albeit no records of high individual series in team event is shown. Malucci s 795 is presumed as the highest. Malucci 815 But Navarro 835 Takes Handicap Singles Title The tournament started with two squads of Singles and Doubles events. In Singles, 5 bowlers shot 700 and better series with Carl Malucci, L.V. leading with for the first 815 series in this singles event history. But Malucci s 815 is not the top in this handicap tournament as Francisco Navarro, Riverside rolled for 733 plus 102 handicap for the winning 835 score to take 120 first place prize. Malucci s 815 which is the first 800 in this event s 26 years history bettering his own record 791 made in 1995, placed 2nd with zero handicap for 105. Third place 90 went to Pablo Yamo, Lake Elsinore s for 701 plus 105 for 806 and Thomas Koerwitz, L.V. took 4th prize 85 with his /711 plus 90 for 801. Robert Ellison, Alpine rolled for this event s 5th 700, 714 but his meager 30 handicap got him 744 for 15th place 36. In this mixed tournament Denise Burrows, Chino Hills became the high lady to cash in 7th place with her for 498 plus 291 handicap for 789 good for 70. The last place to cash with a tie for 24th 25 by Gardy Rodgers, L.A. and Robert Audette, Chino Hills with the same 726 score. Lorenzo-Yoma Duo 1591 Cops Handicap Doubles Title Right after the Singles event, the Doubles event ended with Andy Lorenzo, Thousand Oaks (671) and Pablo Yoma, Lake Elsinore (667) hit stepped down games of for 1338 plus 252 handicap for 1590, one pin short of tying the record made last year. Lorenzo/Pablo s 1590 is good for the handicap title and 240 prize. In second place for 196 were Robert Ellison, Alpine and Mark Fisser, Aliso Viejo with 696 and 738 respectively, scored for the top scratch 1434 but their 69 handicap gave them Third place 150 went to Edward Bazan, Folsom (707) and Daniel Vasquez Jr., La Puente (653) with for 1360 plus 138 for Mixed duo of JudithLee Belkoski and Gary Burgess (686) both of Peoria, AZ had 1497 total for 4th 130. The much watched top average duo of Ken DeGroff, Sunland (696) and Carl Malucci, L.V. (723) rolled (high team game)-482 for no zero handicap 1419 total for 11th place 54. The last 12th place to cash 50 went to Theresa Gutierrez, Bellflower and Robert Scott Jr., Rialto with 2213 total. There were four individual 700s in this event with Fisser s 738 as highest. Besides Malucci s 723 and Bazan s 707, Thomas Koerwitz had a 710. Regret that there were no individual games in this results so individual high game could not be reported for the record. Malucci Deaf Record 2333 But Koerwitz 2347 Wins Handicap All-Events Title The amazing Carl Malucci rolled 795 in team event, 815 in singles event and 723 in doubles event for out of the world 2333 is awesome. In this handicap tournament, it fell into second place as Thomas Koerwitz scored higher 2347 with his handicap. Koerwitz hit 656 in team. 711 in singles and 710 in doubles for his highest 2077 all-events score plus his 270 handicap for his 2347 to beat Malucci for first place 900 prize. So Malucci has to be contented with 2nd place 75 prize and 3rd prize 60 went to Francisco Navarro for his 2295 from 660 in team, 733 in singles and 596 in doubles for 1989 plus 306 handicap. The last 10th place prize of 20 went to Rogue Summers 2213 total with handicap. The next highest scratch score after Malucci s 2333 was also zero handicap 2129 by Malucci s partner Ken DeGroff with Mark Fisser had 2081 from but his plus 117/2198 put him out of money. Ditto for Darrell Stogryn whose 2052 from plus 135 for 2187 and Robert Ellison 202 plus 90/2100. Malucci s 2333 broke the deaf record all-events of 2181 made by Robert Ellison in 2003 by 152 pins but I was told that a deaf bowler had a record 2200 all-events in Eastern Bowling Association of Deaf. I have not received EBAD results for the past two years. Due to space limitations, the Deaf Eliminations results will be in the next issue. In the Sunday s first round 3 one game match play, the 40 bowlers bowled one game match against three different bowlers with the winner getting 30 bonus points to add to his handicp totals for the top 20 cut off. Phil Sanchez, Corona who qualified in 13th with 931, hit 673 winning all three games for 1784 with handicap to move into 2nd. Hawkins with 643 winning two games for 1776 total stepped up from 3rd. Making big leaps were Philip Gomez, Riverside from 26th to 4th with 616 and Ed Abakumoff, Riverside from 28th to 6th with tournament high 726 series. Both had won all three matches. Mark Fisser, Aliso Viejo hit 725 to move from 15th to 7th with 2 wins and ditto for Darrell Stogryn, El Camino Village with 697 to move from 16th to 8th. Malucci rolled a 711 but lost one match to fall to 10th and Robert Ellison with a 706 and two losses fell to 13th. A lone woman Kathleen Ferguson, AZ with 506 and two wins held her 12th place. Bert Enos with just 607and 3 wins moved up to 19th and Ken DeGroff with 697 and two wins made 20th cut with The top 20 went in 2nd round 3 one game match play and Phil Sanchez with 678 and two wins for 2612 total with handicap took over top seed for the top 6 bowlers match play finals. Hawkins with 581 and 2 wins totaled 2537 for the 2nd seed. The lone woman Ferguson with a 574 and 2 wns for 2535 jumped up to 3rd seed and Gomez with 524 and 2 wins for 2514 held on for 4th seed. Malucci rolled another 711 and won all three matches for 2511 with no handicap for 5th seed and the final 6th seed went to Abakumoff with his 680 and just one win for Because of the lateness, it was decided to save time and have a pair of two matches and the winner of last two matches to bowl in championship finals. The first two matches had #3 Ferguson against Abakumoff and #4 Gomez at #5 Malucci. Abakumoff rolled a 258 to beat Ms. Ferguson s /223 and moved on to face #1 Sanchez in the semi-finals. Malucci hit a 212 to beat Gomez s /187 to move on against #2 Hawkins in the other semi finals match. In the semi-finals, Sanchez beat Abakumoff /273 to /210 and moved into the title finals. Hawkins rolled just his average 180 and with help of his 40 handicap beat Malucci by two pins, 220 to 218. Hawkins moved into the title finals and beat his friend and teammate Sanchez /260 to /199. Hawkins won the 2010 championship and 800 prize. Sanchez got 400 as the runner-up. The rest of the money will be given with 155 to 6th place and down to 60 for 15th place.

Someone had given me a little tea set as a gift and it was one of my favorite toys. Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought Daddy a little cup of tea, which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home. My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was just the cutest thing! My Mom waited, and sure enough, here I come down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watches him drink it up. Then she says, (as only a Mother would know...) Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get water is the toilet?

The HERZOG INSURANCE team is made up of some of the best players in the league. They just haven t peaked at the same time. They seem to take turns! Come on guys! Check that oil pattern, check for the right equipment. This round is the SHARK pattern. Jon Brandon was the biggest shark again this week shooting 771! Good for a couple of nice sidepots. Herbert Jones started off slow with a 161, but it was STRIKESVILLE for a 277 and 279/717. KA-CHING! Larry Stephens connected with the pins for a 694 set, and Paul Varela rounded up a 662. Nick Wilson slammed a sizzling 277of his own and Jeff Carr cruised home with 257. The SHARK pattern is no secret! The computer, our lane-man, the USBC, the P.B.A., your Pro Shop, or Center Manager will all have knowledge of the pattern. A round ball, power, and revs isn t the answer any more. 11 March 4, 2010 BOWLING NEWS Page 11 by David Yamauchi Next Tournament This Sunday Brunswick Vista Lanes, Palmdale Farm Club/Open Sunday s Tournament Records Lost If you haven t heard, my car was broken into and the laptop bag and camera bag I use for JAT were stolen last Monday. I lost a lot of data including a bunch of pictures and all the scores, photos and videos from last Sunday. I will do my best to recreate the tournament stats and get all the stats and season stats back together for this Sunday s tournament. Thank You JAT Alumns! Back in September of 1986 I walked into my first JAT Farm Club event nervous as could be only to be greeted by Cookie and Bill Smith who immediately made me feel like part of the club (though Bill never could pronounce Yamauchi right). Never could I have imagined that 24 years later I would be running that very organization. I tell everyone that the reason that I do what I do is because I want every junior bowler to have the experience of JAT. JAT provided my friends and I some of the most cherished memories of our lives and 20 years later have proved once again to be an amazing family. With my laptop and camera I use for JAT being stolen, JAT Alumni put out a message on Facebook for donations to the club. I was completely taken by not only the post but also the response. I want to personally thank all the Alums who took the time to write notes and checks to help offset the replacement of the stolen items. When spontaneous generosity comes forward like this it reinforces my belief in the JAT and what the JAT is all about- it s way more than just great bowling! Thank you all again for your donations and note that all funds in excess of what s needed to replace the items will be put in the JAT Scholarship Fund for our alumni event this summer. Hefley Goes Back To Back The JAT headed back out to Bowlium in Montclair for our PBA Challenge #2 on the Viper pattern. Scoring was low with Jeremy Glover leading qualifying at +103 while low-to-qualify was James Bael at -97. Kevin Jones snuck into the bracket when James didn t report after the cut and made the most of it, making it all the way to the Championship Match. In the end it was James Hefley lighting up the Viper pattern and winning the 2nd PBA Challenge. Congratulations to James for going back-toback! Bidwell Wins First Senior Title Devin Bidwell topped a field of Senior Division bowlers on the challenging Viper pattern taking out Travis Zehntner by over 100 sticks in the 3-game total-pins final. Devin takes home 175 for the win and earns his first Senior Divison title. Sidenote: there are still no repeat winners in the Senior Division! Next Tournament Our next tournament is this Sunday at Brunswick Vista Lanes in Palmdale. Farm Club and Open Division only; Senior division will take a bye. For updated information, stats and schedules log on to See you all on Sunday! JAT 2nd Kevin Jones and Champion James Hefley BOWLING NEWSUDOKU JAT Farm Club by David Gordon MONTCLAIR The JAT Farm Club held its most recent tournament at The Bowlium on February 21st. This was the 2nd PBA Challenge in our series of three and the oil pattern selected this time was Viper. We had thirty-four bowlers in attendance all with high expectations, allowing us to cut to the maximum 16 bowlers for our second round. The group struggled a bit but overall should be happy with their performance. Our thanks goes out to the staff and management as we experienced a smoothly run tournament. In the qualifying round of five games, we saw reportable high scores from Tobias Halladay 254 and Dara Ajimine Nice shooting. Joining them for high honors was Adam Dubia 234, Abel Gervacio 225, and Eric Mandzuch 220. Ajimine, our Challenge #1 tournament winner, led the field at plus 17 and was the only plus bowler after qualifying. The last spot to advance came in at minus 153. In the match play round Albert Fernandez made up for a late and slow start going from the 11th spot to take the lead after 5 more games. Fernandez accomplished this behind games of and captured the tournament high game in the process. Other highs during match play was from Halladay , Dubia 237, Tyler Salverda 230, Wesley Low 222, and Ajimine 222. The finals round then started off with the 5th seed Low (-2) facing off against the 4th seed Dubia (+5). This was an extremely close match and as I started to prepare for a roll-off, Low struck where he needed to for a victory. Low then had to meet the 3rd seed Ajimine (+52) and gave himself a little bit more room of comfort, as he won again Now against the 2nd seed Halladay (+58), Low continue his march towards another title with a win. Now he was ready to face off with the top seed Fernandez (+60) in the best of three games. Low was geared in from previous matches and easily took the first game But now Fernandez was warmed up and came back with a vengeance and a score of In the final game of a very long tournament, neither bowler was ready to call it quits. In the best final pairing in a long time, Fernandez squeaked by with a win. Fernandez thus captured his first JAT Farm Club title in the 6 years he has been bowling with the club. It s a long time coming to hear me say Congratulations Albert! Our next tournament is this coming Sunday taking us out to Palmdale and Brunswick Vista Lanes. We have quite a number of bowlers who each tournament come from that area. It s nice that we can let them sleep in a bit and support them as well by getting out there to Vista. The bowling center ready to give us the red carpet treatment and give some of their other local bowlers a firsthand experience of the JAT and tournament bowling. A strongly encourage our core-base of bowlers to make the trip and enjoy the day. Check-in is our normal 8:15 with bowling to begin around 9:00. Give yourself a little extra time to get there and look over the map carefully. I m sure it ll be worth your effort. Hopefully I ll see you all there. Healthy Menu continued from page 1 tes, and the prescription was a healthier diet. The problem for Isenberg is that he spends most of his day at his office inside Plano Super Bowl, the headquarters for his company; and the menu items available in the center cafe didn t exactly fit what his doctor had in mind; all delicious, but not quite appropriate for a diabetic diet. Isenberg had two choices; either choose the expense and inconvenience of eating outside the center, or make some changes. He chose the latter, and working with Plano Super Bowl Café manager Dee Hafner, they created a new segment of the menu called Healthy Select When I found out I had diabetes, it made me aware not only that I needed to eat healthier foods, but also that we were not offering these choices to a large number of our customers, said Isenberg. I have to admit I was a little skeptical at first, said Hafner, but serving these items to our customers has made me more conscious of my own health, and they have been very popular with the staff, and customers of all ages. And the bonus is they have substantially increased our sales. The new Healthy Select Menu is now being rolled out in all Super Bowl Entertainment centers, and the result will be healthier customers, and increased sales. What more could any center ask for? Super Bowl Entertainment, LLC is a Texas based company operating centers in Plano, Ennis, Waxahachie, Corsicana, Marble Falls, and San Antonio. SBE is dedicated to bringing the best of bowling and recreational entertainment to its customers in the communities it serves. There will be a Super Senior Division for ladies over 60 and also a 70 plus Shoot Out for nonqualifiers for match play who are 70 years or older. There is also a second chance sweeper for bowlers who failed to qualify for match play. Eighteen states will be represented. Unfortunately, due to the current economic situation, there will be no entries from England for the first time in years. The almost eighty participants in the over-50 ladies competition vie in what I consider the friendliest competitive bowling tournament I have ever witnessed. The ladies actually pull for each other, as if they were teammates. Nonetheless, the competitive juices are still there and the talent is evident. No less than six Hall of Famers will be shoeing up, including defending champion in the regular division, Jeannie Naccarato, plus Pam Buckner, Fran Deken, Dana-Miller Mackie, Virginia Norton and Robin Romeo. Returning to defend her Super Senior Crown (over 60) is Andi Whitlock. And not to be overlooked is perhaps the BEST, yet least publicized bowler in the game, Sandy Postma, a past winner of the Golden Ladies tournament, a consistent finalist in this event, and one whose resume includes the WIBC Queens championship in One of the highlights of the tournament is the traditional cocktail party Tuesday night where prizes are awarded and pizza and drinks are served by Jeanette and Dick. The Storm Golden Ladies Classic is truly golden and not only gladdens the heart of the Golden Lady herself, Jeanette Robinson; it certainly enriches the memories of all participants.
