Compared to , the number of certificates and degrees conferred increased 0.9 percent at all institutions (29,396), decreased 1.1 percent at public institutions (24,551), and increased 11.3 percent at private institutions (4,845). 10 The number of bachelor s degrees conferred per person in the Oklahoma State System increased 15 times from to , from one in 4,027 to one in 265. The number of master s degrees awarded per person increased more than 14 times, from one in 12,698 to one in 882. The number of doctoral degrees conferred per person increased almost 84 times, from one in 778,811 to one in 9,322. During the last 15 years from to , the largest number of degrees conferred at public institutions was bachelor's, followed by associate, master's, first-professional, and doctoral. The number of degrees conferred increased from to for associate degree (from 4,922 to 6,537), bachelor's degree (from 10,887 to 12,648), first-professional degree (from 540 to 564), master's degree (from 3,057 to 3,794), and doctoral degree (from 358 to 359). From to , the largest number of bachelor s degrees was awarded in business and management followed by education. Since , education has become the largest number of bachelor s degrees awarded (2,674 in ), followed by business and management (2,584). Education also has accounted for the most master s and doctoral degrees conferred during the past 15 years. From to , the largest percentage of degrees was awarded to White students: over 80 percent in associate and firstprofessional levels, over 70 percent in bachelor s and master s levels, and over 60 percent in doctoral level. In , American Indians were second in associate, bachelor s, and first-professional levels; Nonresident Aliens ranked second in master's and doctoral levels. Comparing to at public institutions, the number of degrees conferred decreased for all levels except master s level for men, first-professional and master s levels for women. viii

15 DEGREES CONFERRED IN OKLAHOMA HIGHER EDUCATION SECTION I: HISTORY OF DEGREES CONFERRED IN THE OKLAHOMA STATE SYSTEM BY TYPE OF DEGREE, FIELD OF STUDY, AND RACE SUMMARY: FIFTEEN-YEAR HISTORY The public institutions in the Oklahoma State System awarded one bachelor s degree for every 4,027 people in Oklahoma in By , the proportion of bachelor s degrees to population rose nearly 16 times to one bachelor s degree for every 256 people in the state. In , one in every 265 Oklahomans earned a bachelor s degree from the Oklahoma State System. [Table 1]. The number of bachelor s degrees conferred per person increased 15 times from to , from one in 4,027 to one in 265. The number of master s degrees awarded per person increased more than 14 times, from one in 12,698 to one in 882. The number of doctoral degrees conferred per person increased almost 84 times, from one in 778,811 to one in 9,322. [Table 1]. During the last 15 years from to , the largest number of degrees conferred at public institutions was bachelor's, followed by associate, master's, first-professional, and doctoral. [Figure 2]. 25 DEGREES CONFERRED IN OKLAHOMA HIGHER EDUCATION SECTION II: DEGREES CONFERRED AT PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS BY TYPE OF DEGREE, FIELD OF STUDY, AND INSTITUTION SUMMARY: TOP THREE FIELDS OF STUDY During the academic year, the number of certificates conferred at public institutions was 374. The top three fields of study were health professions (169, 45.2 percent), business and management (113, 30.2 percent), and precision production trades (31, 8.3 percent). The number of associate degrees conferred at public institutions was 6,537. The top three fields of study were liberal arts (1,315, 20.1 percent), business and management (1,292, 19.8 percent), and health professions (1,289, 19.7 percent). [Figure 3 and Table 6]. The number of bachelor's degrees conferred at public institutions was 12,648. The top three fields of study were education (2,674, 21.1 percent), business and management (2,435, 19.3 percent), and health professions (923, 7.3 percent). The number of first-professional degrees conferred at public institutions was 564. The top three fields of study were law (171, 30.3 percent), medicine (143, 25.4 percent), and osteopathic medicine (85, 15.1 percent). [Figure 3 and Table 7]. The number of master's degrees conferred at public institutions was 3,794. The top three fields of study were education (1,127, 29.7 percent), social science and history (566, 14.9 percent), and business and management (532, 14.0 percent). The number of doctoral degrees conferred at public institutions was 359. The top three fields of study were education (83, 23.1 percent), engineering (49, 13.6 percent), and psychology (42, 11.7 percent). [Figure 3 and Table 8]. During the academic year, the number of certificates conferred at private institutions was 3. All were in theology studies and religious vocations. The number of associate degrees conferred at private institutions was 139. The top three fields of study were health professions (51, 36.7 percent), education (29, 20.9 percent), and social science and history (17, 12.2 percent). [Figure 4 and Table 9]. The number of bachelor's degrees conferred at private institutions was 3,218. The top three fields of study were business and management (908, 28.2 percent), education (358, 11.1 percent), and health professions (212, 6.6 percent). The number of firstprofessional degrees conferred at private institutions was 421. The top three fields of study were law (378, 89.8 percent), theology studies and religious vocations (39, 9.3 percent), and law and legal studies (4, 1.0 percent). [Figure 4 and Table 10]. The number of master's degrees conferred at private institutions was 1,521. The top three fields of study were business and management (863, 56.7 percent), education (165, 10.8 percent), and theology studies and religious vocations (110, 7.2 percent). The number of doctoral degrees conferred at private institutions was 92. The top three fields of study were theology studies and religious vocations (65, 70.7 percent), engineering (9, 9.8 percent), and psychology (6, 6.5 percent). [Figure 4 and Table 11]. 13
