SDBOR Custom Data Analysis Enrollment Book: SDSU 2017 Prepared by the SDBOR Office of Academic and Research Affairs, this report provides a compendium of data describing recent enrollment trends at South Dakota State University. 1 Identical reports are generated for each regental university, and are intended to serve as a resource for campus officials for planning and analysis purposes. Supplemental interactive data are available from the SDBOR Fall Enrollment Dashboard on the Board of Regents website. University Summary In Fall 2017, SDSU reported a total headcount enrollment of 12,527 and a total full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment of 10,108. Table 1 and Figure 1 show basic headcount and FTE figures for SDSU over time. 2 Table 1 Figure 1 SDSU Headcount and FTE SDSU Headcount and FTE Term Headcount FTE Fall ,554 10,220 Fall ,557 10,180 Fall ,589 10,141 Fall ,613 10,130 Fall ,527 10,108 Change -0.2% -1.1% 1 All data for this report are sourced from Regents Information Systems fall term census date extracts. Questions about this report should be directed to Daniel Palmer at danp@sdbor.edu. 2 Throughout this report, FTE values are rounded to the nearest 1.0. However, Change indicators refer to original unrounded values. 3
Enrollment by Student Characteristic Table 2a splits SDSU s unduplicated headcount totals into two categories: (1) students taking at least one on-campus course from SDSU, and (2) students taking off-campus courses from SDSU only. Students taking a combination of on-campus and off-campus courses from SDSU are included in the On category. Note that students reported in the Off category may have taken on-campus courses from other universities. Table 2a SDSU Headcount by Student Enrollment Type Term Total On Off On Off Fall ,554 9,864 2, % 21.4% Fall ,557 9,896 2, % 21.2% Fall ,589 9,817 2, % 22.0% Fall ,613 9,836 2, % 22.0% Fall ,527 9,729 2, % 22.3% Change -0.2% -1.4% 4.0% - - Table 2b displays the SDSU FTE generated - at any location - by the students tabulated above. For example, the FTE shown in the On column below reflect all SDSU credits taken by students in the On column in the table above. These FTE may have been generated either on-campus or off-campus from SDSU. 6 Enrollment by Student Characteristic (cont.) Table 4a combines the previous two characteristics (student enrollment type and degreeseeking status) into one cross-tabulation of SDSU headcount. Again, students reported in the Off categories may have taken on-campus courses from other universities. Likewise, students listed in the nds columns may have been degree-seeking at other universities Table 4a SDSU Headcount by Student Enrollment Type and Degree-Seeking Status Term Total On-DS On-nDS Off-DS Off-nDS On-DS On-nDS Off-DS Off-nDS Fall ,554 9, , % 1.1% 14.4% 7.0% Fall ,557 9, , % 0.8% 14.1% 7.1% Fall ,589 9, ,666 1, % 1.1% 13.2% 8.8% Fall ,613 9, ,652 1, % 1.2% 13.1% 8.9% Fall ,527 9, ,621 1, % 0.8% 12.9% 9.4% Change -0.2% -1.1% -23.0% -10.6% 34.2% As on previous pages, Table 4b shows the SDSU FTE generated by the students categorized above. For example, the FTE shown in the On-DS column below reflect all SDSU credits taken by students in the On-DS column in the table above. 7 Enrollment by Student Characteristic (cont.) Table 5a segments SDSU s total headcount by resident status. Students in the Resi column are considered South Dakota residents for tuition purposes, while students in the nresi column are considered out-of-state students for tuition purposes. Table 5a SDSU Headcount by Resident Status Term Total nresi Resi nresi Resi Fall ,554 4,941 7, % 60.6% Fall ,557 5,108 7, % 59.3% Fall ,589 5,185 7, % 58.8% Fall ,613 5,472 7, % 56.6% Fall ,527 5,444 7, % 56.5% Change -0.2% 10.2% -7.0% - - Table 5b shows the SDSU FTE of the students reported above. Again, the FTE shown in these columns reflect the SDSU credit activity of the students reported in each corresponding column above. Table 5b SDSU FTE by Resident Status Term Total nresi Resi nresi Resi Fall ,220 4,209 6, % 58.8% Fall ,180 4,345 5, % 57.3% Fall ,141 4,394 5, % 56.7% Fall ,130 4,642 5, % 54.2% Fall ,108 4,659 5, % 53.9% Change -1.1% 10.7% -9.4% - - 7
Enrollment by Student Characteristic (cont.) Table 6a provides headcount trends for three undergraduate student subgroups: first-time undergraduates, transferred-in undergraduates, and high school students. Note that these classifications are not exhaustive, meaning that the columns will not sum to 100 percent of the All UGs column (which shows the total population of undergraduates at SDSU.) Table 6a SDSU Headcount, Selected Undergraduate Groups Term All UGs FirstTime Transfer HighSch FirstTime Transfer HighSch Fall ,840 2, % 6.4% 0.4% Fall ,792 2, % 6.3% 1.7% Fall ,844 2, % 5.6% 3.8% Fall ,799 2, % 5.8% 4.5% Fall ,736 2, % 5.5% 5.0% Change -1.0% -1.4% -14.4% 1,171.4% Table 6b displays the SDSU FTE generated by the students classified above. Again, the All UGs column refers to all undergraduates at SDSU, not the sum of the other columns shown here. Table 6b SDSU FTE, Selected Undergraduate Groups Term All UGs FirstTime Transfer HighSch FirstTime Transfer HighSch Fall ,286 2, % 5.8% 0.1% Fall ,192 2, % 5.8% 0.5% Fall ,143 2, % 5.4% 1.1% Fall ,095 2, % 5.5% 1.4% Fall ,077 2, % 5.2% 1.6% Change -2.2% -0.8% -11.1% 1,659.1%
Detailed Enrollment by Location 3 Table 7a provides an alternative representation of SDSU headcount by location. In this table, students are duplicated by course location when applicable. For example, a student taking both an on-campus course from SDSU and an off-campus course from SDSU will be included in each respective column below. However, the All column continues to show unduplicated headcount. As a result, percentage columns show each subgroup s proportion of the total student population; these proportions will not sum to percent. Table 7a SDSU Headcount by Course Location Term All On Off On Off Fall ,554 9,864 5, % 43.7% Fall ,557 9,896 5, % 42.0% Fall ,589 9,817 5, % 45.4% Fall ,613 9,836 5, % 47.0% Fall ,527 9,729 5, % 47.6% Change -0.2% -1.4% 8.8% - - Table 7b displays the SDSU FTE generated by course location. For example, FTE reported in the On column below refer to all SDSU FTE generated through on-campus courses delivered by SDSU. This approach constrasts with previous FTE tables, which reported the total FTE generated by students per classification. Table 7b SDSU FTE by Course Location Term All On Off On Off Fall ,219 8,275 1, % 19.0% Fall ,179 8,297 1, % 18.5% Fall ,141 8,110 2, % 20.0% Fall ,129 8,089 2, % 20.1% Fall ,108 8,035 2, % 20.5% Change -1.1% -2.9% 6.6% Unless otherwise noted, all FTE tables in this section exclude audit credits. 9
Detailed Enrollment by Location (cont.) Table 8a displays SDSU students enrolled at other regental institutions. The Other Any column shows the number of SDSU students enrolling at other universities at any location, and the Other On and Other Off columns tally enrollments in on-campus and off-campus courses (at other universities), respectively. Students are duplicated by course location when applicable, except in the SDSU column, which is unduplicated. Table 8a SDSU Headcount at Other Universities by Course Location Term SDSU OtherAny OtherOn OtherOff Any On Off Fall ,554 1, , % 1.1% 12.5% Fall ,557 1, , % 1.1% 11.4% Fall ,589 1, , % 1.3% 10.8% Fall ,613 1, , % 1.6% 10.8% Fall ,527 1, , % 1.3% 11.0% Change -0.2% -10.5% 20.1% -12.5% As above, Table 8b shows FTE generated by course location. For example, the On column shows FTE generated (by SDSU students) in on-campus courses at other universities. Ratio columns depict FTE generated at other universities in relation to FTE generated at SDSU. So, these columns indicate the ratio - for students taking at least one course at SDSU - between FTE generated at other universities and FTE generated at SDSU.
