1 Office of Research & Planning New with Primary Risk Three Year Follow-Up Requested by: Advising Retention Center Date: 8/16/2006 Provided by: Joan Warren & Joe Lange Date: 6/11/2009 Background During the fall 2006 registration period, new students who were advised through the Advising Retention Center (ARC) were administered a survey to collect background demographic information. A primary purpose of the survey was to identify at-risk students. A total of 732 surveys were able to be analyzed. This number represents 66.3 the 1,104 new students enrolled at census. Although the survey information is self-reported, the sample is sufficiently large enough to have confidence in the data. The four primary risk factors investigated are generally acknowledged to be the most important impediments to academic success. The risk factors are: First generation student (from the survey). Definition = neither the father nor mother attended college. Low income student (from BANNER table). Definition = eligible for the PELL grant. Academically Deficient\Remedial\Developmental level (from BANNER test score table). Definition = below college level on course placement test scores in Math AND English OR Reading. Work risk (from the survey). Definition = 20 or more usual work hours each week. This report summarizes the performance of the students through the third year (sixth semester). Summary & Conclusions Of the original 732 students surveyed, 598 (81.7%) reenrolled in the spring 2007 semester, 450 (61.5%) reenrolled in the fall 2007 semester, 394 (53.8%) reenrolled in the spring 2008 semester, 249 (34%) reenrolled in the fall 2008 semester, 203 (27.7%) reenrolled in the Spring 2009 semester. 2 After three years (six semesters), if the four risk factors were to be ranked in terms of their adverse affect on student persistence, academic performance, and completion rates, the rankings would be (from most detrimental to lease detrimental): 1. Academically deficient/remedial student 2. Low income student 3. Student working 20 or more hours per week 4. First generation student By the end of the sixth semester, the persistence rate for the cohorts were as follows: o No risk factors 32.3% persisting. o First generation student 28.8% persisting o Academically remedial student 27.8% persisting o Low income student 26.9% persisting o Student working 20+ hrs/wk 26.9% persisting The sixth semester (Spring 2009) average GPAs for the cohorts were as follows: o No risk factors average GPA o First generation student average GPA o Student working 20+ hrs/wk average GPA o Low income student average GPA o Academically remedial student average GPA At the end of the spring 2009 semester, the cumulative GPAs for the students still enrolled were: o No risk factors cumulative GPA o First generation student cumulative GPA o Student working 20+ hrs/wk cumulative GPA o Low income student cumulative GPA o Academically remedial student average GPA There were only slight differences in the number of credit hours attempted and the total number of identified risk factors. without any identified risk factors averaged approximately one credit hour more than students with identified risk factors through the first three semesters. However, in the fourth semester (spring 2008), the average credit hours averaged by the remaining students who were still enrolled were similar, and for L:\Joe_Stuff\Projects1\Surveys\New\200702_newstudents\New student risk factorthree year follow-up docx.docx 6/11/2009 Page 2 of 9
3 the fifth and sixth semester students with risk factors were attempting more credit hours than those students without risk factors. There were clear differences in the average number of credit hours earned and the average semester GPA for students with risk factors as opposed to those without identified risk factors. o with any of the four risk factors earned fewer credit hours and achieved a lower GPA than those students without risk factors. o Generally speaking, there is an inverse relationship between the number of student risk factors and their academic performance. That is, as the number of risk factors increase, the number of credit hours earned and the semester average GPA decrease. By the end of the sixth semester, the completion rate (i.e., earned a certificate or associate degree) for the cohorts were as follows: o No risk factors 47.7% completion rate o Student working 20+ hrs/wk 27.8% completion rate o First generation student 27.5% completion rate o Low income student 24.1% completion rate o Academically remedial student 22.7% completion rate o 1 Risk Factor 31.1% completion rate o 2 Risk 27.5% completion rate o 3 Risk 25.9% completion rate o 4 Risk 12.1% completion rate By the end of the sixth semester, the transfer rates were as follows: o 160 of the 732 students (21.9%) transferred to a 4-year or 2-year school. o There were 115 unduplicated transfers to 4-year institutions (15.7%) o There were an additional 45 unduplicated transfers to 2-year institutions (6.2%) (Duplicate) student transfers by identified risk factor were: 30 of 65 students (46.2%) with none of the four risk factors transferred 48 of 212 (22.6%) academically remedial students transferred 77 of 446 (17.3%) students working 20 or more hours transferred 66 of 386 (17.1%) first generation students transferred 32 of 520 (6.2%) low income students transferred L:\Joe_Stuff\Projects1\Surveys\New\200702_newstudents\New student risk factorthree year follow-up docx.docx 6/11/2009 Page 3 of 9
4 These findings provide clear implications for advising new students. o The primary risk factors should be identified before or during the student registration advising sessions so that students can be assisted in making prudent course registration choices. o All students with identified risk factors should be offered and encouraged to access additional support services such as math and writing labs, peer and professional tutors, and other supplemental instruction services. o Academically deficient/remedial level students are at highest risk and should be strongly encouraged to enroll in developmental courses and other courses that are not reading intensive. o Low income students were at the next highest risk and should be advised accordingly to take a less strenuous course load at least for the first semester. o The first year is the most difficult. who are retained and persist into the second year are performing better. o with all four of the identified risk factors are, in fact, at very high risk for achieving in their academic course of study and need much support. Summary tables are on the following pages. L:\Joe_Stuff\Projects1\Surveys\New\200702_newstudents\New student risk factorthree year follow-up docx.docx 6/11/2009 Page 4 of 9
