1 M E M O R A N D U M JCCC Johnson County Community College Institutional Research - COM College Blvd. Overland Park, Kansas (913) DATE: February 20, 2014 TO: FROM: SUBJECT: Ed Lovitt Natalie Alleman Beyers, and Pat Sumner Office of Institutional Research FALL 2013 DISTANCE LEARNING REPORT The attached tables and graphs provide data on distance learning enrollment for the fall 2013 end of semester. For this study, distance learning classes were identified by those classes having an Instructional Method of Hybrid or Distance Learning. Table 1 provides characteristics of students enrolled in distance learning classes compared with all fall 2013 JCCC students. Data are for all students that received a grade and do not include students in a course for which grades have not been awarded. Table 2 provides the total number of class sections, average class size, withdrawal rate, completion rate, and completer success rate for on-line classes compared with the same classes on-campus. For purposes of this analysis, on-campus simply means the same course not offered as an on-line class. College Now courses are not included in the analysis. Tables 3 and 4 provide data by course prefix and course number for the on-line classes compared with on-campus classes. College Now courses are not included in the analysis. If you have any questions or need additional data, please me at nalleman@jccc.edu. cc: Andy Anderson Lin Knudson Patrick Rossol-Allison
2 FALL 2013 ON-LINE CLASSES On-line classes are defined as those classes with an Instructional Method of Hybrid or On-Line. Characteristics of on-line students Nearly 27% of fall 2013 students were enrolled in at least one on-line class. Of those enrolled in an online class, 37% were exclusively enrolled in on-line classes (Table 1). A higher percentage of on-line students were female (58%) (Table 1, Figure 1). There was little difference between on-line students and all JCCC students in terms of minority enrollment (Table 1, Figure 1). Distance learning accounted for nearly 18% of fall 2013 student credit hours, compared to 16% for fall Comparison of on-line and on-campus for the same course There were 574 on-line sections offered in fall The average class size was 15.7 students compared to 18.6 for the same courses on-campus. Withdrawal rates overall were about the same for students enrolled in on-line classes (11.4%) compared to on-campus classes in the same course (11.1%) (Table 2, Figure 2). Students completed on-line courses at the same rate (88.2%) compared to students taking the same course on-campus (88.1%) (Table 2, Figure 2). Success rates (proportion of students receiving an A, B, C, or P grade as a percent of students completing the course) were slightly lower for the on-line course (80%) compared to the on-campus course (81%). Comparisons by prefix There were definite differences at the prefix level between courses taken on-line and the same course taken on-campus (Table 3). Care should be exercised in the comparison due to number of sections and enrollment between the on-line and the on-campus for some prefixes. Ten prefixes (academic achievement center (AAC), administration of justice (ADMJ), computer science (CS), drafting (DRAF), economics (ECON), education (EDUC), fashion (FASH), hospitality management (HMGT), journalism (JOUR), and religion (REL)) had success rates substantially lower (greater than 10% difference) for the on-line courses than for the same courses taken on-campus. Three prefixes (art history (ARTH), information technology (IT), and reading (RDG)) had a substantially higher (greater than 10% difference) success rate in on-line classes than the same course on-campus. Three prefixes (foreign language (FL), information technology (IT), and religion (REL)) had substantially higher attrition rates (greater than 10% difference) in the on-line course compared to the on-campus course.
