2 T hanksgiving Rally at Jojoba Hills was fun for everyone. The attending members were, Joe & Ann Thomas, Fred & Julia Lyon, Phil & Donna Westerman, Inge Stein, Dick & Bobbie Mathies, Art & Jackie Riefman, Dan & Marcy Smith, Bobbie Kingsland, Marla Liberty. Lisa, Kelly & Austin Crawford, Karen Peters, Bill & Cathy Wright and Rosemary & Mike Anderson. Day visitors were Jana Jill Snyder, Trish Campanella and Dave Davison. Also attending was Bruce & Sheri Forsyth, Heather s brother and sister-in-law from Seattle. And, of course, the hosts, Dana & Joyce Class, Phil & Heather Auchter and Bev Kuhn. Thursday a last minute potluck was held at Bev Kuhn s house. Friday was arrival day with a dinner of snack food at the Ranch house. Guests from the Resort were invited to talk about the Air Gun Range, our Pickle Ball Courts and information tours. Games were played with prizes for the winners. Since some of the members arrived Sunday was leftovers and lots of conversation. Some member left for home and some laid by the pool. It was a good time. We look forward to seeing everyone at the December Rally in Chula Vista. Saturday began with a special breakfast prepared by Bruce & Sheri Forsyth. Fred Lyon held the business meeting then everyone toured the Jojoba Resort, the Shot Gun Range, played Pickle Ball. 5 San Diego Unit Christmas Rally Chula Vista RV Resort December 13 15, Sandpiper Way, Chula Vista CAMPING ALL FILLED UP but sometimes a cancellation occurs. Call a Host to be included on the Wait List. In any case please come to the Saturday Installation Lunch (see the note below). Fred & Julia Lyon & Phil & Donna Westermann Campers come early on Thursday if you can. Just call Chula Vista RV Park to make your own arrangements and pay only for the extra night. Thursday evening you can walk with us to The Galley at the Marina for their delicious All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry. Choose your activities on Friday. Friday check in at 2:00. Bring yourselves and your setups for a special dinner provided by the hosts. Afterwards join together for Good Cheer and Christmas Carols accompanied by our gifted keyboarder (a la Westermann). Saturday we have breakfast waffles cooked by Master Waffleer Richard (bring setups & coffee) followed by a couple of hours to enjoy the marina s parks and nautical sights. Then our annual 11:30 luncheon at the Galley and social get-together with installation of the 2014 officers. For lunch: separate orders & separate checks and informal dress. Bring a GPS to enjoy geocaching in the afternoon (some auto GPSs will be OK), enjoy recommendations on nearby places to see, or just sleep off your Bloody Mary. Saturday evening take pleasure in the park-provided Chocolate Festival, Entertainment and Door Prizes. 6 SIGN UPS NEEDED NOW for ROSE BOWL RALLY. More spaces are available. The rally runs from Dec 28 Jan 1 and Do not Delay offers many more events at much less cost than other competing organizations offer. It looks like parking will be less crowded than previously (still dry camping). The camping site is very close to the parade route and is centered close to great shopping, groceries and restaurants. Parade seating is included and is located in a prime spot and with great seats to see the floats, and you can have an opportunity to work on building a float. It is a great way to see the parade. 12 Cooking Corner Contributed by Julia Lyons Here is a light pineapple souffle-type casserole that was popular at the Jojoba Hills rally in November. It can be prepared a day early then baked before being served. An adventurous cook could try it with a different fruit than the canned pineapple. PINEAPPLE SOUFFLE CASSEROLE 2 20oz cans crushed pineapple 8 Slices of bread (cut crusts off). Cut into cubes 1 Cube of butter 4 eggs 4 Tbs flour 1 Cup of sugar 12 x 8 baking dish Brown butter slightly, add bread and set aside. Beat eggs until fluffy add flour, sugar, pinch of salt and mix. Add undrained pineapple and bread cubes, mix and blend. Bake 350 degrees for 1 hour. Makes 12+ servings. Can be prepared a day ahead then cooked before serving. 13 The San Diego Streamer Message from the Editor T hough the current holiday of Thanksgiving was based on the 1621 feast, it did not immediately become an annual celebration or holiday. Sporadic days of Thanksgiving followed, usually declared locally to give thanks for a specific event such as the end of a drought, victory in a specific battle, or after a harvest. it wasn't until October 1777 that all 13 colonies celebrated a day of Thanksgiving. The very first national day of Thanksgiving was held in 1789, when President George Washington proclaimed Thursday, November 26 to be "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer," to especially give thanks for the opportunity to form a new nation and the establishment of a new constitution. Yet even after a national day of Thanksgiving was declared in 1789, Thanksgiving was not an annual celebration. M other of Thanksgiving We owe the modern concept of Thanksgiving to a woman named Sarah Josepha Hale. Hale, editor of Godey's Lady's Book and author of the famous "Mary Had a Little Lamb" nursery rhyme, spent 40 years advocating for a national, annual Thanksgiving holiday. In the years leading up to the Civil War, she saw the holiday as a way to infuse hope and belief in the nation and the constitution. So, when the United States was torn in half during the Civil War and Lincoln was searching for a way to bring the nation together, he discussed the matter with Hale. L incoln Sets Date On October 3, 1863, Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation that declared the last Thursday in November (based on Washington's date) to be a day of "thanksgiving and praise."
