1 The San Diego Streamer OCTOBER 2013 VOLUME 4 ISSUE SIX A Monthly newsletter for the members and friends of the San Diego CA Unit of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International A Message from our Unit President Inge Stein has worked hard to publish her first newsletter. As a relatively new member in the unit she started at a big disadvantage because of no turnover process, lacking publishing experience, and with having attended only a few San Diego rallies to gain experience with our membership and our routine activities. Her hard work has resulted in an informative and attractive newsletter that we all can enjoy. Fred Lyon, President Chula Vista s Hunt and Peck Rally Thank you Dan and Marcy for a GREAT Rally! Hello San Diego Streamers. This is a new addition of the unit newsletter with our member Inge Stein as the volunteer to start a new. I would like to wish her the best at her new adventure as editor. Just an update for the last couple of months. I have sent out 10 letters to new prospective members that have bought new airstreams. As of you reading this I will have called them and hopefully had conversations with some of those people to help introduce them to our unit. I would like to thank all who attended our September rally at the KOA in Chula Vista. We had a really good time doing our best to put on the best rally we could. Just a few details about the rally for those who couldn t attend. Continued on next page. Upcoming Events: Nov 15-17: Jojoba Hills Resort Thanksgiving Rally Dec 13-15: Chula Vista RV Resort Carol s and Chocolate Extravaganza Meet with us on Facebook Copyright October 2013 by The San Diego Streamers. 2 e had a new members Steve and Deanna Miller join us at the rally. They literally joined our unit at the rally. We hope to see much more of them in the future rallies. We also had Richard and Zella Burk, with their daughter Elizabeth. They had a vintage rig and tow vehicle. Its always head turning to see such a fine combination and we are happy to have them in the unit. You can see photos of their setup on the website in the September pics page. As an activity we put together a scavenger hunt. I hope everyone had fun looking for the things on the list that was provided. We had a couple rules that we hoped would find it a challenge and we encouraged the members to explore the campground and spread the airstream fun fellowship and adventure to other campers at the campground. I hope we succeeded in doing so. Continued on next page Copyright October 2013 by The San Diego Streamers. Reproduction in whole or part without written permission prohibited. Page 2
3 Chula Vista s Hunt and Peck Rally Cont. Thank you to chefs, Dan, Marcy and Richard Our Hostess Jester Marcy ur winners were, 1 st place Inge Stein and her guest. 2 nd place was Art & Jaclynn Reiffman. 3 rd place was Steve & Deanna Miller. We also had a bonus gift for the most unusual item you had in your rig. That winner went to our President and first lady Fred & Julia Lyon. We hope you all had a great time. Marcy and myself could not have pulled off such a great rally without the help of a few other members. Richard Rozendal for helping on the stove with breakfast and dinner. Richard asked me a question Saturday morning when he came over to help, bright and early at 7am. I had already started to cook and the stove was hot. He asked, ( so you like your Dav sausages Davison well and done? son ) Dean I had with to laugh, Roz you can all thank Richard for a finely cooked meal and I learned to slow down on the heat makes better meals. I hope to carry that info into the future. Marcy does the 99.9 percent of the cooking at home. Also Joe Thomas for bringing the projector so we could watch a movie called ( the long long trailer ). Thank you Joe, your continue willingness to help is always appreciated. Also Rick Blacklock for bringing his popcorn machine. Rick always seems to have that one thing that just puts the cherry on top of the sundae. Thank You Rick. With all your help and continued participation, we all can make this the best unit in SoCal and I hope we can continue to grow and attract membership that we can all enjoy. 6 San Diego Unit at the Lodi Rally Fred & Julia Lyon and Bev Kuhn in her rig left San Diego on Sunday. Phil & Donna Westermann had reservations at a national park that met with an unfortunate demise when the national parks were closed; they joined up on Monday and the three rigs went to San Simeon State Park for two nights. The nearby town of Cambria has a Scarecrow Festival during the whole month of October. There are 400 life size scarecrows scattered through the town, all dressed as individuals (like Abe Lincoln) or in groups (like the Wizard of Oz characters); they were a wonderful surprise and are well worth a trip north. Our favorite group was the five scarecrow bicyclists, ages ranging child to grandpa, all with moving legs pedaling and wheels rotating. We stopped at the marvelously done Steinbeck Can you find the real Airstreamer? Museum in Salinas then continued on to Casa De Fruta RV Park and Fruit Market for the night. On Thursday we headed for the Region Rally in Lodi but on the way stopped by necessity in Lathrop at the Ghirardelli Chocolate Outlet and Ice Cream Shop. There was lots of room for the three of us to park while consuming ice cream delights and to fill take-home bags with discounted chocolate treats. Copyright October 2013 by The San Diego Streamers. 7 San Diego Unit at the Lodi Rally The Region 12 Rally in Lodi was held at the fairgrounds with parking on grass and good electric and water service. The three dinners were good and thanks go to Long Beach Unit for one of them. Activities included various indoor and outdoor games, walking and bicycle tours, several interesting seminars and a winery tour of some of the 80-plus wineries in the area. Lodi does have a plethora of wineries and produces many fine varietals. Watching thousands of tall sandhill cranes flying and landing at the wildlife reservoir was a real treat. San Diegans at the rally included Fred & Julia Lyon, Phil & Donna Westermann, Bev Kuhn, Dick & Bobbi Mathies, Rich & Marian Rego and our new member Marla Liberty. We had lots of fun time together and enjoyed the many good, friendly people in Region 12. It is the people and the relationships formed here that make these rallies so much fun now and in the future. Miscellaneous information disseminated during the rally included the unfortunate folding of the San Fernando and San Joaquin Units one for lack of members and the other for lack of leaders. Other information includes that while new WBCCI members can join the club online renewals cannot be done online; WBCCI is working on that. Also, now we can sign up for the 2014 Hobo Rally on line at the Region 12 website. Region Rally sites for 2015 are not firm yet; Victorville is no longer under consideration due to exorbitant cost. A ranch near Atascadero is a potential site for the 2015 replacement for the Hobo Rally. The 2015 International Rally will be held in Farmington, NM close to the many historic Indian-culture sites and at high enough altitude that warm temperatures should not be a problem. Also, in 2014 there will be a Balloon Rally sponsored by the Santa Clara Unit held in Reno, NV the first Thursday after Labor Day. Fred Lyon Copyright October 2013 by The San Diego Streamers. 8 SIGN UPS NEEDED NOW for ROSE BOWL RALLY. More spaces are available. The rally runs from Dec 28 Jan 1 and Do not Delay offers many more events at much less cost than other competing organizations offer. It looks like parking will be less crowded than previously (still dry camping). The camping site is very close to the parade route and is centered close to great shopping, groceries and restaurants. Parade seating is included and is located in a prime spot and with great seats to see the floats, and you can have an opportunity to work on building a float. It is a great way to see the parade. 12 hen you knock on someone s Airstream door: I just read in the October s Blue Beret an article called Airstream Style : In which Rhonda Coleman writes When you knock on someone s Airstream door and say Hey, can I look inside your trailer?, people not only open their door and say Sure come on in, they say we re cooking breakfast, how do you like your eggs? I have a similar story to share. A few weeks after the devastating tornados leveled the town of Moore I left for Oklahoma City in my 23ft International Sea Breeze to visit family. On June 29 th with the temperature teetering around 100 degree s I arrived back at the RV site I was staying at and noticed an addition to the RV Park a 1979 refurbished 23 ft Airstream International which had arrived earlier that day. I knocked on the door and said Hi! How do you like your Airstream?. A very tired young lady with husband in tow answered the door. I immediately apologized for the interruption! Without a second thought she invited me in! And as they say the rest is history! They were both Doctors from Minnesota, dirty, dusty and exhausted. Having spent the past three days in Moore with The Billy Graham Crusaders volunteering their time and energy wherever they were needed, building new floors, and kitchens along with giving emotional and spiritual support. They wanted to offer me a glass of good cheer but admitted they had run out and where too tired to stop off at the State Liquor Store on their way home. Hospitality was reciprocated so I invited them in for a cocktail commensurate with an invitation to visit my ft Airstream International. We had so much to talk about and time just slipped away. 4 hours later they finely left feeling exhausted but rejuvenated having made a new friend for life! It was my birthday the following day and at 8:00 am the young lady was outside my door with a bottle of wine and beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers, singing Happy Birthday! Moments like this is what it s all about! Copyright October 2013 by The San Diego Streamers. Reproduction in whole or part without written permission prohibited. Page 12
13 The San Diego Stream Message from the Editor Hello San Diego Airstreamers, I have volunteered to be your new Editor for the San Diego Steamers. Not having any experience in editing this has been quite a challenge. Marie has done such a great job it will be a challenge to fill her shoes. I Bought a 23 ft International 2010 Sea Breeze, and joined the WBCCI that same year. After seeing a Discovery Channel program about the WBCCI I decided to buy an Airstream and join the Club. It looked like so much fun! As a single person this has been a great way to meet people with similar interests and at the same time travel around visiting grandchildren in Denver, Oklahoma and Toronto Canada In Style. My first Rally was the Hemet Rally in Fun was had by all, we listened to great music and danced the night away. I learned a lot about my Airstream and everyone is always so very helpful. I was so impressed with the Hemet Rally and with all the wonderful volunteers that I wrote my first article and to my surprise it was added in the following Newsletter. This club is so vital for us all and with your help we can continue making it better. At every Rally I have attended I tend to upgrade my Airstream, Added solar got new batteries and at the last Rally Karen and Henry Trulson had a friend of theirs make me an awning leg extension. Now when the awning is down I don t bump my head when reaching for the front door. MARVELEOUS! They also introduced me to the bathroom door extension which gets installed using a piano hinge. I have asked Abe to build one for me. I love meeting all you wonderful people who are always ready to lend a helping hand. There is a camaraderie which is second to none. I look forward to giving you the news and please feel free to write to me and let me know what you would like to see in the following Monthly newsletters.
