The local sport and commercial seasons for sockeye salmon are directly linked to the success of this salmon run. I carried out policies and practices to maximize success of sockeye spawning efforts while conserving and protecting non-target species. June 2011-June 2016 Scientific Technician II, seasonal Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife; Fisheries Program Region 6 Headquarters; Montesano, WA Supervisors: Curt Holt, Wendy Beeghley, David Low, Sara Ashcraft Phone: Curt Holt-(360) , Wendy Beeghley-(360) , David Low- (360) , Sara Ashcraft-(360) Curt.Holt@dfw.wa.gov, Wendy.Beeghley@dfw.wa.gov, David.Lowe@dfw.wa.gov, Sara.Ashcraft@dfw.wa.gov Duties: Spawning ground surveys: I collected field data on spawning salmonids, including chinook (spring and fall runs), chum, coho, and steelhead. This data was the basis for setting sport and commercial harvest opportunities and was used to model population patterns. I worked 3 seasons on the Upper Chehalis Dam Proposal Project; this project provided for an environmental impact study of a proposed dam on many aquatic and semi-aquatic species in the Upper Chehalis River basin. I was the field lead on the salmonid spawning ground portion for 2 seasons. Port Sampling: I conducted angler interviews to collect crucial data on sport and commercially harvested marine fish species, including salmon, tuna, rockfish, and halibut. These data are used to set regulations and restrictions locally and between different governing bodies. The broader goal was to conserve natural resources while providing sport and commercial opportunity where appropriate.
