2 From the Editor Years of Fishing Memories Reborn T he past week I have been preparing for the Wabatongushi Fishing Outing, beginning this Friday. The preparation for a 8 day trip with 6 guys can be a bit taxing at times and I let my mind wander as I make lists and double check them. On top of that my best friend Mike Swartout, who owns the island at Lake Wabatongushi had open heart surgery and a quadruple bi-pass surgery. I was in that frame of mind last weekend when I attended the Kids Fishing Outing. As I left early in the morning, my wife Renee reminded me that last year I came home with such a big smile on my face and all kinds of touching stories. As I watched the families and first time fishermen with their new MWS fishing equipment, I was reminded why this outing is such a pleasure for me. I am reminded of my first fishing trip with my own children. The first fishing trip with my son was with the Cub Scouts for a father son weekend. We did not bring any equipment, so I made an impromptu fishing rod with string and a freshly cut narrow branch; using a safety pin for a hook. For bait all we had was last nights canned corn. I know so many of you can relate to that first Bluegill he caught. Similar memories followed over the years as I took both of my kids to Wabatongushi. Last weekend, I relived part of that experience watching the MWS guest fishers at Kensington Metro Park. John Wright and I were standing on the top of the hill talking to the DNR representative and watching the children and parents fishing. After the 3rd or 4th young boy came up to us with a tangled mess on line and pole, John and I simultaneously came to the same conclusion. Their parents needed our help as much as the boys did. This time we took the rod back with us to the parents and gave them all a small lesson on casting, indicated better places to aim that cast and how to watch for a nibble, before a bite. Within moments we had our two trainees casting with those tricky trigger reels. Next, they were casting where they aimed. And then, of course both boys first saw their bobber twitch and move against the wind current. On command they set the hook and brought out the Bluegills. Quickly they brought their catch to Mom who took out her cell phone / camera. She insisted that they hold those fish high so she could get a photograph of the first fish each of them ever caught. Let me tell you the smiles on faces of the entire family were very broad and cheeky. They refused to touch the fish, that lesson will have to wait for another day. Which brings me full circle back to Lake Wabotongushi. The Saturday experience was my reminder of 25 years of great experiences with Mike and our children. Just what I needed to finish packing, a good attitude and refreshed memories. Matt Lubaway Do you have an announcement or information for club members? 5 Fishing Reports Kensington Kids Outing, June 12, 2010 The Shore Fishing area of Kensington Metro Park turned out to be a good choice for our 10th annual kids fishing outing. There was ample parking and the area provided at least 100 yards of flat grassy land with a gentle slope down to a quarter mile of shoreline. People began showing up at about 8:15 am and were directed to a check in area. Dave Haupt of the MDNRE was on hand to get the kids signed up for a free youth fishing license and sportsman s card, compliments of Metro West. After the sign in process, each child was given their choice of a rod and reel combo or other fishing gift. With their new rod and reel in hand and a cup of crawlers provided by Walt s Crawlers, they were off to catch that monster fish that awaits us all. By 10:00 am you could see people fishing along the entire quarter mile shoreline. Fish on was the call of the day. Everyone caught fish, mostly blue gills, some not so big, some keepers, but mostly runts. I saw kids catch perch, sun fish and large mouth bass with some near keeper size like the 12 large mouth caught by Dave Skrobot s grandson, Nick. There was also a 22 1/2 northern pike caught by Lexi Morris. For some of these kids this was their very first fish they had ever caught. I talked with one little girl who told me she had caught 12 fish. I m sure all of the fish caught were thrown back. (Continued on page 20) 5 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS
6 Fishing Reports (Continued from page 20) At 11:00 am everyone was treated to a Michigan Birds of Prey program presented by Nancy Sloan of the Howell Conference and Nature Center. Nancy s show consisted of a Great horned owl, a Merlyn, Red Tailed Hawk, an Eastern Screech Owl, and an American Bald Eagle. The show lasted an hour and Nancy explained about each of the bird s food and habitat. The kids were a great audience as they watched each of the birds with their handler. After the show, everyone posed for a group picture with Nancy and the eagle. Bob Olari awarded Nick with the First Place Trophy for his 12 large mouth bass, and Lexi took home the Grand Champion Trophy for her 22 ½ northern pike. Hurry, hurry, hurry get your red hots here 288 of them to be exact! Lunch also included baked beans, chips, and drinks, and of course that long time Metro West favorite chocolate peanut butter brownies from Gordon Food Service. At first I thought we may have bought too much food, but when I saw the long lines I was afraid we would run out. We served lunch to about 212 people, and I don t believe anyone went away hungry. Leftovers consisted of five hot dogs, and about two dozen brownies. We finished off the chips, beans and drinks. We received many compliments from our fishermen guests about how much they enjoyed the day. Gary Towns and David Haupt of the MDNRE were very complimentary to Metro West on the great job we did both on the outing and on the sales of youth fishing licenses From our view point the day came better than we could have expected, plus we learned a few things that will hopefully help next year s event go even smoother. I want to thank the many Club members who came out to help. As always, we couldn t have done the job without you. Kids Outing Co chairmen Jim Robertson Bob Olari These comments I overheard while cleaning up, were how I knew the Kid s Outing was a success; Matt Lubaway, Editor Dad! We gotta go fishin EVERY day Boy 5 years old. Dad! I wanna catch just ONE MORE Boogill Young girl almost too tired to keep walking to the car. 6 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS
7 Fishing Reports This is a copy of the letter I sent out to the DNRE. Wanted to thank everyone again for your generosity! You put on a really great event! On June 12th, Gary Towns and David Haupt attended the Metro West Steelheaders Kid s Fishing Outing. We worked with the group and came up with the plan to sign up all of the kids in attendance for Young Angler licenses. The club paid the $3 fee for every kid to receive a DNRE Sportcard and Young Angler license! This was a direct result of the Fish n Fun Day that I sold at back in May. 122 KIDS WERE SIGNED UP!!!!!! This brings back approximately $1098 in matching federal funds plus the $366 that the Metro West Steelheaders donated! It was great to see all the first timers, kids and parents, taking advantage of the free weekend. Jim, Henry, David and everyone else from Metro West Steelheaders were instrumental in making the entire event a huge success. They helped the kids and parents with their fishing, cooked at least 1,000 hotdogs for everyone there and really made a point of explaining the importance of licenses and conservation programs. This is the exact type of event that needs to take place in Southeast Michigan more often. The overwhelming population in this district is full of people eager to learn and have experiences outdoors; they just need more people to provide the opportunity. Steve Kankula: Steve and wife Bettie joined at the May meeting. Larry Leciejewski is Steve s sponsor. Steve said The king in the picture is one. I have been fishing almost all my life in the Detroit River, Lake Erie, and a few times in Lake St. Clair. In Erie and the River I fish walleye and perch; St Clair, for small mouth bass. I have been on four charters for salmon. The largest King I have caught is the one in the photo and was weighed in for a tournament Lbs. I caught it near Oekama, Michigan. I want to start salmon fishing with my own boat and that is one of the main reasons I joined... I have an 18ft starcraft, setup for downriggers, kicker motor, electric trolling motor and rod holders; the only thing I don't have is the planner board mast. Once I learn where and how to target salmon I would like to upgrade to a 22' or 24' hardtop boat for salmon fishing. Bettie and Steve live in Wyandotte. Steve, welcome to Metro West.
