2 2 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS Hello All, Who s on first? Or better yet, who s in first? First place that is. The big fishing season is in full swing and I hope everyone is getting out on the water as much as possible. So far spring has been shaping up pretty well, as far as weather goes. As you know from our club calendar, we have a lot of activities planned for the summer season. I once again want to encourage everyone to take part in as many events as your time will permit. One of our biggest summer events is the Kids Outing at Kensington Metro Park, June 9 th. This event always proves to be a great time for everyone who attends, from the kids, to their parents, and our club members who help in the show. Please step-up and give Jim Robertson a hand, so this year s event will be as great as ever. June is packed full of walleye fishing events for the club, so don t be left on shore wishing you were there. Get the word out that you need crew or that you are available to crew; there is always someone looking. Don t forget, July is one of our biggest activity months of the summer. We are having our club summer picnic as our July membership meeting this year, in the backyard of Jim and Bonnie Robertson, on July 10 th. This is a family picnic and Jim has room for the entire club, so once again, let s party. I also want to remind everyone that a memorial service is planned for our fallen fishing buddies following the June 16 th walleye tournament on Lake Erie. Your support and attendance will be appreciated. We will have more information at the June 5 th membership meeting. I know Henry Nabors is going to have an outstanding presentation at the June meeting, to entice everyone to get involved with our Erieau Canada tournaments in July. If you have not yet fished Erieau, you re in for a big treat. I ve told you before, for other events, and I will tell you again, don t miss it. Erieau is like no other place or event; plan ahead and get your reservations in early for this event. I have been informed that you can apply for your Canadian fishing license on line, and by doing so, you will save yourself a great deal of time and aggravation. As always, get involved, pitch in, volunteer, let people know if you are available to crew, or if you have room on your boat for additional crew. Enjoy your club. See you on the water. Fish On Clyde Schoen Your President The Prez Sez

7 7 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS Metro West Benton Harbor / St. Joe Salmon Tournament May 19, 2012 By Chris Thompson Photo taken 1 week earlier due to lack of camera The weather was somewhere between amazing and too nice. The previous years the tournament was held earlier and the weather looked like an episode of the Deadliest Catch. So we elected to hold this a little later this year; GREAT CALL. The waves were 1 or less for all weekend. There was a light breeze at the picnic to help keep us cool. A couple members showed up Friday for practice ishing. By Saturday we had 11 boats, but Herman Christoph did not stay around due to boat troubles, so the tournament actually had 10 boats. Here are some fast facts: 78 ish caught Saturday alone, Friday was just as good, Sunday not so 35 people at picnic; including 3 women and 3 BH irst timers 35 ished weighed 259 pounds weighed (only counted the tournament weight not other ish) 11 boats PLACE BOAT CAPTAIN WEIGHT (lbs) POINTS BIG FISH WHO 1 st Jigger Greg Ruggles Greg Ruggles 2 nd Fishin Fools Chris Thompson Cassandra Platt 3rd Fisheye Ted Ringer th Picture This Jim Robertson th Drum Beat Marty Drum th The Menace Dennis Kelley th Stripes Roger Parlett th Fishin Machine Clyde Shoen th Low Pro ile John Wood th Salty Dog Dave Zawacli OTHER ATTENDEES Ken Holloway Cameron Holloway Bob Shepard Matt Mehn Brian Thompson Kim Bidwell Mark Platt Cassandra Platt Eric Braden Cameron Zirles Lenard Pietila Gary Towns Phil Drum Todd Stav Ron Purcel Phil Bustos Jeff Bustos Dave Strunk Joe Walsh Devy Van-Liejenhorst Darryl Schoen Tom Taylor Jared Wood Sue Wood Mile Janiszewski Thanks to all attended. 8 8 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS Fly Fishing - Schultz Out itters Style After he spoke at a recent general meeting, Lance Hinatsu connected with Mike Schultz of Schultz Out itters in Ypsilanti and arranged for a Metro-West group Fly Fishing seminar and demonstration. Although Mike is well known for his Steelhead and Salmon ly ishing guide service throughout Michigan and Ohio, I was impressed with his focus on LOCAL ishing locations and techniques. I know he donated his time to promote his brand new Fly Shop next to the Huron River (4 E. Cross St., Ypsilanti, MI 48198), but I picked up many new ideas along for rational reason for his techniques. I took the lessons learned right out and felt some new success myself on the Huron River near home. I found a great place to fly fish with my wife Renee (See her article below) Matt Lubaway, Editor The evening at Schultz Out itters was a good experience for those looking for an introduction to Fly Fishing. A well informed slide show of the Ohio Steelhead Alley preceded a overview of the articles for sale in the shop and an artful exhibit of a ly ishing demonstration by owner Mike Schultz. If you want to start off on the right foot of equipment, setup and knowledge, you should stop by Mike's shop, to let the professionals optimize your ishing experience. Dominic Liparoto The Flying Bluegill After months of working long hours, Matt and I decided to spend an evening together on the river and headed to a local ishing spot north of Proud Lake in the Huron River. We d been there before< Matt teaching ly ishing casting, but never with any luck with the ish. We live in the lakes area of Oakland County. Surely there s a good ishing hole close to home for busy working folks like us. Once again, a report from and old ly isherman pointed us back to a speci ic turn outside of Proud Lake. We decided to give it a go but I didn t get my hopes up. We picked a beautiful evening and I igured at least I d get a little ly casting practice in and enjoy the warm weather. We tried a spot I hadn t been to before, not with a ly rod anyway. We also decided to try some special lies, handcrafted by Steelheader, John Anderson. To our delight, we started catching ish! Admittedly, this was a irst for me using the custom ly rod Matt made for me last year. In fact, this was the irst ish I d caught since taking up ly ishing. A real thrill, despite how small the ish was, a small rock bass. Then, it started getting even more fun. I soon learned what all folks who ly ish experience. The ish you catch while standing in the river can be very unpredictable. They swim towards you, past you, some will even slip right between your legs. The little guys I was catching were swimming all over the place while I tried to reel them in. I caught some crappie, bass and a pumpkin seed. But the funniest one was the little bluegill who hit my ly right before I pulled back into my next cast he came lying out of the water and almost smacked me in the face. It was hysterical. We caught ten ish between us that evening all catch and release, of course. A nice start to the season for this new ly ishing girl. I can t wait till my schedule opens up again and we can head back to the river. We ve already chosen the spot we want to check out next, just beyond the dam. Renee Lubaway And after may hours of rod building and ly rod casting, we have a new ly isherwoman. Matt Lubaway

10 10 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS From: Dan Keifer Metro West Member Sent: Friday, May 25, :16 PM Subject: Fishing Report from Yellowstone Hello, Fishermen/Metro West Members, I broke through yesterday on my second trip down to Between the Lakes on the Madison. Caught a nice chunky rainbow, probably 13-14", fumble- ingered the hookset on another. See photo #1114; #1116 shows how the river looked for the afternoon. It was in much better shape than a week ago when it was chocolate from snowmelt. (See ishing report on the blog below.) Yesterday it had a nice stain to it. I started ishing with the lies as recommended at BRF...a brown rubberleg stone w/ an egg dropper. Nothing came to that for more than an hour. So, having graduated from the Van Fossan School of the Red Serendipity, I switched the dropper. Both ish hit the Serendipity. My family thought I was loco to come back into the Park Wed night to camp at Madison Junction with poor weather setting in. Well, this is why I did. The bison shot is on the road in from West Yellowstone that evening. The snow shot is how the Madison at National Park Mountain/Big Bend looked when I got up the next morning. The last photo is how Mt. Haynes looked a couple hours later when some sun was breaking through to melt the new snow. Dan See Dan s Blog about his stay in Yellowstone at Fish Eye Team April 28 Manistee Report Freddy B said Go if you can. and I agreed with him completely. We found the action picking up in close, in 25 to 30 feet of water. We had strong north & east winds Fri & Sat, so we had to duck in tight along the high banks and we heard a report the shelf was cooling off! Friday 4/27: Fish Eye Captain Ted Ringer, Chuck Cambell & I were Skunked, not even a sniff, doing what we thought was the same as the Salty Dog but I Guess not! At the same time the Salty Dog Captain Dave Zawaki, Mike Janaziewski & Steve Manders brought in 9 fish Kings & Browns.Ugh! Saturday Tournament 4/28: Fish Eye: Had a late morning comeback and finished 2nd with overall total catch, behind Salty Dog. It was not an official category, I made it up to make our team feel better! Fish Eye finished 5th in Brown & 6 & 7th in King, 8th in Laker and ended up with 4 Kings, 3 Browns & 1 Laker. The Hot Spot was North of Big Sable Point in 25 FOW. We took fish trolling Slide Divers back 40 with 80 foot of lead-core, DR's 3-5 feet off the bottom, 75' Copper and Size 50 Purple Jets out on boards, back 43' w/ Screw Balls, or Black spoons w/ Green, orange, or Red Tape. Salty Dog: Kicked all butts again! Full cooler..browns, Kings, Lakers.Ugh again!!! Dave took 2nd & Steve Manders 3rd in the Brown division & Steve Manders took 1st in the King division w/ a 17# Gorgeous Fish ( bright purples & silvers). We heard that Salty Dog was 3 for 5 on Kings late yesterday morning while we were on our way home. They were to fish again this morning and then head for home Lucky "Salty Dogs"!! Special Thanks, to Paul & Darci Stewart for hosting another awesome Tourney (Definitely will be back for the Fall Steelie Tourney!). Off to FLA. For Surf & Reef fishing! Eric Braden

The Clinton River Outing had 43 attendees, down from 80 in No ish were caught (Pre Event Fish reports had indicated ishing to be slow. Early warm spell had the ish heading out to the Big Lake with spawning complete). Matt Lubaway & Jason Davis provided ly ishing lessons. Matt won the long cast competition w/ Jason. Attendance for Special Events, including the Banquet, is up by 15.1%. That is very good. Meeting attendance is down by 13% when Feb is excluded because of a snow day in 2011; April attendance was down by 15%. Tournament & Outing attendance is down but can be explained by the Ice Outing being canceled for no ice and the Clinton River Outing being on Easter weekend. The Manistee events were well attended. Total Attendance all events: 935. This is very nice participation level for a club with 190 members. Keep up the good work and get the word out on upcoming events. A letter of appreciation from the Judson Center was reviewed [Hand out submitted]. The letter outlined the meaningful impact made by the camp experience on one special camper. Matt Lubaway proposed that through Henry Nabors, the Judson Center be contacted and made aware MWS has the means to fund an additional camper this year. The membership report is to be submitted to MUCC by May 31st. Carmen Zirles will provide a check to MUCC, based on the Henry Nabors membership report. MUCC Convention Resolutions: Matt Lubaway reported on the amount of effort put into developing MWS recommended resolutions for presentation at the upcoming convention. As of 4/4/12 there were two resolutions in progress (Nitrates& Increase License fees), but died, as they missed the submittal date. A discussion followed. Bob Olari indicated that he needed any resolutions for presentation prior to the February District 1 Board meeting. Mark Davis commented that a Draft should be prepared in December with Final Resolutions ready in January. It was agreed by the group that the Resolutions process will be revisited at the November 2012 Board meeting. Bob Olari indicated that he should be receiving shortly, the 2012 list of MUCC Proposals. The Board will need to review and con irm on how should be voted, at the next Board meeting. Bob Shepherd indicated that he may push to another date, or cancel, as the ish were in the river 6 weeks early and recent reports slim. Jim Drews: Jim reported that the 2012 Sportsmans Banquet was extremely successful. Clyde Schoen indicated that Marty Drum has the Sportsmans Banquet Hall set for March 9th Clyde added that we need to change our mind set to, this is our annual Fund Raiser, not a $50 meal. A short discussion yielded that the Board will bring up issues, but the MWS Bylaws indicate that the event chair has input as to how the event will be run. Clyde Schoen mentioned the we need to support our event chairmen & how events are facilitated. Matt Lubaway: Matt reported that the April MWS Newsletter was tough to get out, with added rod building for donation to the MUCC District 1 Banquet. Banquet auction drew $750 for the irst rod & $270 for the second. MWS May Newsletter submittal due date is 4/20/12. There will be a Salmon in the Class Room meeting later this month. There are 110 Fry remaining. The release is being planned for the end of May in the Huron River at Hurock Park. The release will be coordinated with the Huron Valley Steelheaders. Mark Platt : Tournaments: Mark reported that there is one Tourney left that needs a Chairman. Port Captains: Jim Maddux will take on the Port Captain duties for Day 1 of the Ludington Tournament. The June 16th Memorial Tourney needs a Port Captain. Mark requested Ideas for how to hold the Memorial Tourney. A group discussion followed. One item agreed on was to have loating biodegradable wreath tribute. It is thought that this years Memorial Tourney would include at least 3 to 5 acknowledgements from the past two years (A follow up with Henry Nabors, will be required to con irm). There were concerns about holding the Memorial Tourney at Luna Pier. A discussion followed with Clyde Schoen recommending Toledo Beach, as it has easier access and loading. Jim Robertson will talk with Tom Taylor about Being a Co-Chair with Jim. It was agreed that extra time would be added into the Tournament for the Memorial Service. Wounded Warrior Tourney : Clyde Schoen to start organizing efforts next week. Clyde has one participant signed up to date and will be contacting a number of additional Warriors. Bob Shepard: Fishing Machine is in storage until the end of Summer, our next show. Bob spoke with Dennis Kelley, who indicated a cooler is missing from storage. Keith Hooper has an extra cooler from the General Meeting Food Service. Keith will return the cooler at the next General meeting for return to storage. Mark Davis believes we use (3) coolers at each Tourney for drinks & food. Bob Shepard will mention to Dennis Kelley that Clyde Schoen has an extra 150 Qt. cooler available if necessary. Keith Hooper: Refreshments: Keith reported that his mission statement is to have a Service Center, not a pro it center and to offer a convenient service to the members at a good price. Keith has been purchasing only what is needed for a given meeting, so that there are no leftovers. If there are any leftovers they are pitched. Condiments are refrigerated for two meetings, then pitched. Any past due date chips that are found will be donated to Civic Concern, a local charity. Due to consistent circuit breaker trips, Keith will be pre heating the hot dogs at home prior to transport, so available hot when he arrives. Keith added that he would like to add a Decaf coffee pot. Bob Olari to check on his resources for a cup coffee

13 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS 13 (Continued from page 12) maker. Old Business: 1) Donations committee: Carmen Zirles mentioned 2011 donations were made to Cormorant control. Also a $1,000 had been approved earlier in 2011, but put on hold for release to Lake Superior State University. The Board agreed to proceed, as previously approved. For 2012, Jim Robertson spoke with Gary Towns about Project Fish. This is a MSU & Sea Grant program to try and get people to ish. It consists of training programs. Jim mentioned that the Project Fish group coauthored the Salmon in the Classroom website. Jim to have a Project Fish Lansing contact, as a future General meeting speaker. Carmen Zirles to contact Jeff Bustos for other 2012 donation considerations for future Board review. 2) Kids Camp Drawing: Tabled, need Jeff Bustos to attend the May Board Meeting. 3) Website Updates: Henry Nabors has updates in progress. Eric Braden will contact Herman Christoph to see if he may be interested in Chairing the 2013 Spring Boating Expo. Jim Robertson made a motion to eliminate the 2013 Detroit Boat Show & 2012 Metro Beach Boat Show this Fall, from future MWS booth participation, Jim Maddux 2nd.
