6 Leamington Tournament Duane Zantop Port Captain The results of our Leamington Tournament were not what we had expected. I guess you could say that mother nature decided to take control of another Tournament. The week before our Tournament the charter boats were catching limits of walleye. The weekend before our tournament we were invaded by millions of fish flies and fishing immediately took a nose dive. The walleyes were feeding on fish flies all night long. The charter boats at the Leamington docks were actually canceling charters. At one point we actually thought of canceling our tournament but some charters started bringing in a few more fish so we decided to go ahead with our plans. The weather was beautiful and the lake was calm but the fish did not cooperate. We had a 8 boats in the tournament, Dave Skrobot and the crew of the Toucan came in first with 5 fish and a total weight of 10.3 lbs. Ron Bellemore, along with the crew of Keeping it Reel, came in second with 3 fish and 8.5 Lbs. We had an exact weight tie for biggest fish which was ruled in favor of the Sea Tiger (Zantop) as the fish was 1/4 inch longer. Unfortunately Ray Fraser and Ernie Kipp s day was marred by an Ontario Conservation Officer who was at the boat ramp and took their cooler and two fish - a 10 lbs king and a 4 lbs walleye. He gave them a $150 ticket because the clerk at Wall Mart put the wrong date on the one day License. A special thanks goes out to Marina Manager Ronan Oliver and his crew who were very helpful and accommodating. Also I would like to thank Dave Strunk and Ron Maschke who helped my crew cook the food and weight in the fish. 7 Metro-West Conservation Henry Nabors, on behalf of Metro-West Steelheaders, presented an annual donation check for $1000 to Dan Keifer of the Clinton River Watershed Council - and a fellow member of MWS. Metro West and CRWC have forged a strong relationship over recent years. Metro West, CRWC and the City of Rochester Hills sponsor an annual fishing outing at Yates Dam on the Clinton River to showcase the river to more than 150 steelhead-fishing friends. The Clinton River is a designated trout stream beginning at Yates Dam and has been managed as a type 4 stream by the DNR for more than 15 years. The fisheries program includes stocking of 20-25,000 yearling rainbow trout annually. These fish migrate downstream through Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie to grow and mature, returning 2 to 3 years later as 5-10 pound adults to spawn. The Clinton River Watershed Council (CRWC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting, enhancing and celebrating the Clinton River, its watershed and Lake St. Clair. The Clinton River Watershed Council provides programs and services in the areas of watershed management and stormwater education, including their well-known Stream Leaders, Adopt-A-Stream, Southeast Michigan Phase II Stormwater Information Clearinghouse, and Clinton River Coldwater Conservation Project (CRCCP) programs. Our Metro West donation helps fund the programs and services CRWC offers to the community, environment and watershed. Visit the CRWC web site for more information about the organization. You can direct questions or comments to Dan at dan@crwc.org Submitted by Henry Nabors, MWS Board Member 7

12 New Members New Member Introductions: Larry Leciejewski: Larry and wife, Diane, live in Dearborn. Larry said I retired from UPS after 30 years of service. I was fleet supervisor in charge of maintenance of the brown delivery-trucks. I enjoy traveling with my wife Diane. We just returned from a two week vacation in Branson, Missouri where we took the boat and fished on Table Rock Lake. We have six children and three grandchildren. Larry added I am interested in learning the skills and techniques for improving my fishing skills on the Great Lakes. I enjoy fishing very much and would like to be more productive when I do make the effort to get out. As I become more acquainted with the Metro West Steelheaders I would be willing to become more involved with activities and events as time allows. Larry s boat is 17 and well equipped for our kind of fishing. Larry may have openings for crew this year. Welcome Diane and Larry. Gale Frazee: Gale and wife, Joyce join us from Farmington Hills. Gale tells us I have always loved to fish and do it every chance I get. I have a 21 Cruisers Inc. boat that I have been salmon fishing on the Great Lakes for the last two seasons. I river fish (fly, spin, bait cast) with a number of friends all over Michigan. I am looking forward to the outings and fishing information with MWS. I asked Gale if Joyce fishes. He said Absolutely not! Fish is a four letter word to her. She eats them but can't understand why fishing is such a big deal with anyone. Joyce, there are a few others in the Club that would agree with you - not many but a few! I asked Gale where he likes to do his fly fishing. He replied Everywhere. Mostly on the big Manistee for steelhead. Gale may have room for a few members as crew on his boat this summer. If you are interested in fishing with Gale, get to know him a bit better and see if there is a fit. Gale is a recent GM retiree. It was great to see Gale, family and church friends at the Kids Outing this month. Welcome to Metro West Gale and Joyce; hope to see you at the Club picnic! Jeremy Fabry: Jeremy and wife, Karen live in Milford. Jeremy joined the Club at the Kids Outing at Kensington when he brought the kids out for a day of fishing. The children are Jeremy Jr. (13), Haley (8) and Ashley (5). The kids proved they love to fish at the outing!! Jeremy likes both Lake and Stream fishing and does a bit of fly fishing as well. I asked where and he said Rock Corriel, Lake Erie, any where there is water. Jeremy would like to be a crew member for both salmon and walleye. If you have a slot open on your boat, give Jeremy a call. Bob Olari is Jeremy s sponsor. Mitchell Nimmoor: Mitchell and wife, Judith live in Royal Oak.. Mitchell joined Metro West at the June meeting after attending the sportsmen s banquet and several general meeting. He and Judith also participated in the Kids Outing and jumped right in to help with the event. Mitch would like to be a crew member on a few of the fishing outings. Mitchell and Judith, we will look forward to seeing you at the Club Picnic. Welcome to Metro West Steelheaders. 12
