From the Editor Spiral Rods Matt Lubaway, Editor I have been restoring antique bamboo rods for about 9 years and building custom rods for about 4 years. The thing about custom rods that intrigues me is that I can give attention to details of construction that factory builders do not have the time to care about. Production rod makers rarely take the time to find the characteristics of the fishing rod blank that effect fish-ability; such as locating the spine or placement of the guide correctly on the spine. Another reason is that little care is given to superior designs because they just do not catch on. Most of my rods are fly rods, but I am always researching different rods. One of the most unusual rods I discovered is the spiral rod. This is not anything new, in fact the spiral rod first patented in 1909 by John Scanlan of Chicago. A major problem with it is that most fishermen will look at it and think it is defective. Here is why; on a spiral rod the first guide (closest to the reel) is on the top. The second and third guide are placed progressively off to one side, until joining the balance of the guides on the bottom of the rod. Your first instinct will be to twist the rod straight and that is the mistake. On a conventional casting or boat rod, with guides on the top, there is a torque twisting action, as the guide is forced under the stress and weight of the fish sideways and down. This adds additional fight to your fishing. In fact as the size of the fish increases, so does the torque increase. The rod may feel like it is being twisted out of your hand and by a force other than the fish. In the spiral rod, the majority of the guides are on the bottom. In that case, the downward force is not transferred into a twisting action. This reduces additional stress, so you can redirect your efforts directly toward your catching fish. Two additional forces are also caused by this guide on top torque. First, that twisting can also be transferred through the rod, drastically flexing the tip to the left or right. Second, as the rod bends under stress, the line will be forced directly down onto contact with the rod itself. This is bad for the durability of the line, and bad for fishing sensitivity; resulting in more lost fish. Moving the guides to the bottom solves both of these problems, by allowing your line to track true with the forces of gravity and the weight of the fish. Don t go out looking for or even asking for a spiral rod just yet, as there may not be any in stores. One solution is a custom rod. A second solution you may be able to accomplish yourself, if you are using two piece rods. First turn your rod tip 180 degrees, so the guides are now on the bottom. Remove the second and third guides, replace them on your rod each 1/3 further down to the left (or right) until you complete the 180 turn. Apply guide thread and epoxy and you will have built your own spiral rod. Fish well! Do you have an announcement or information for club members? 3 Big Fish Metro West Members with BIG FISH Lbs!! Compiled by Henry Nabors Fisherlady: Tammy Gibson Size: 24 Pounds and 40" long Location: Pere Marquette River Set Up: Wading in river w/ a 9ft St. Croix rod using a single salmon egg Date: October 10, 2009 Tammy said No big story. I take my nephew, Brik, fishing every year to wade the P.M. river to catch those Fall salmon. We were fishing the river near Baldwin. We caught our limit of six fish on a beautiful sunny Fall day. The bright sun was not a problem. The big male came out of a deep hole and the females came off rock beds. All six kings were caught on artificial (rubber) orange salmon eggs. It was just a great day on the river! Tammy joined MWS in April Tammy is a Team Leader for spot paint repair at the Ford Dearborn Truck Plant. She obviously knows how to handle a fishing rod as well as build trucks!! Register Your Catch: Submit form with picture to Dennis Kelly for official entry. DennisKelley@juno.com 3

Manistee River Eric Braden s Manistee River Salmon Trip - October 2 & 3, 2009 My wife Michelle, brother Sean, Co-Worker Terry Price & I, had the good fortune to be able to fish the Big Manistee River; the trip was a two day event with two guides. The four fisherman pair up, two to a guide and then switch guides for day two. The trip has been an annual event for over 20+ years Day 1 Pairings: Michelle & Eric: Guide Dave Kane [Fished below Rainbow bend up to Bear Creek]; Sean & Terry: Guide Mike Bright Jr. [Fished The Devil s hole back down below Bear Creek]. Weather: Deg F, Raining, Light winds Day 1: Michelle & I donned our cold whether & rain gear. Dave loaded up our gear and we shoved off at Potter s Landing. We set up at first light with white flatfish on the outside rods & one gold Pin-K-T plug down the middle. Had a bump on the inside flatfish within the first 10 minutes, but. There had been light showers in the area, but had increased to a steady drenching, when the middle rod had a 14# King slam the rod hard. The skunk out of the boat, I was set for another awesome day on the river. The day light grew & we decided to try our luck in another hole. As we rounded another bend we found hole after hole occupied. Dave decided that with the increased river traffic chasing salmon, recent rains and a number of Steelies being caught in the area, that we should switch over to light Spawn rolling gear, so casting we began. It wasn t long before I was hung up on a submerged log, or so I thought. The line twitched, I reeled up the slack and the line went tight, then started to move slowly toward the middle of the river, Fish-ON. The rod had a fierce bend in it and I had turned the fish several times before I thought of asking Dave Kane what type of rig was I fishing with? The fight was strong and I really didn t want to break a leader, or worse the rod. Dave replied in a relaxed tone, that the rod was his personal favorite, Light Action 8 Loomis with Stradick spin casting real. The line was 10# mono, with an 8# leader. After two attempts at the net and what seamed like 10 minutes, Dave slid the 18 pounder over the gunwale and on to the floor.whew!!!! Man I m not sure if that was fun, or not, what a rush-full stress!!! Dave said that the fish was fairly fresh, so it was an accomplishment on such light gear,. About an hour later lightning struck for the second time on light gear. Another respectable 15# Fresh King was in the cooler. After the fifth or sixth scolding from Dave that I was fishing ahead of Michelle, her rod doubled over and a 12#+ flash of angry muscle leaped out of the water along side a nearby blow down. I thought, get his head Michelle and get him away from all that timber. My wife usually out fishes me, so she was way ahead on my thoughts. I heard a splash over my shoulder and an 8# hooked snout Dark Green King was wedging himself between a log and the near sandy bank. We had just set up in the area, just down a ways from another guided boat. They had been there a while with out a tap and Michelle s first cast started quite a raucous of cat calls when the Steelie took flight. Dave replied back to his river captain buddy, that as soon as Michelle lands that Steelie (Presently clearing the water for the third time), we would rescue the beached King. Michelle looked away from the fight and wanted to know where the beached fish was? Panic struck Dave and I and we pleaded for Michelle to get her head back on what looked to be the best aerial fight of the day. Well, the entry position of the line didn t change as the fish headed past us up stream. We thought the fish was still on. Dave tried repositioning the boat three times. Used an extension plug puller and still couldn t get the fish free from (Continued on page 7) 6

Manistee River (Continued from page 6) what appeared to be some 50# braided line (end of fight). We cast a while longer, but didn t really much care if we got a hit or not. We had some Kings to smoke and plenty of eggs for November beach fishing. Day 1 results: Michelle & Eric: 3 for 7; Sean & Terry: 2 for 6 Day 2 Pairings: Michelle & Eric: Guide Mike Bright Jr [Fished below Pine Creek to below Bear Creek]; Sean & Terry: Guide Dave Kane [Fished up above Bear Creek to below Rainbow Bend]. Weather: Deg F, Over cast, Light Winds. Sean & Terry headed off to meet up with Dave Kane & Michelle and I followed Mike Bright Jr. to the Bear Creek ramp. This was our first trip With Mike Jr. as he has been a Steelie guide on the North Coast rivers of Ohio for a number of years. Mike had the boat and jet warming up, off we went up river at an awesome clip. We had motored up past Devils Hole & the Indian camp while only passing one other fisherman. This was a great sign,. Mike idled her down up around Pine Creek to approach one of his fathers favorite holes. We were running a four rod spread of alternating Yellow & Blue Pin-K-T plugs. Fish were rolling all around, Mike began to ease us back on our first slide when rod #1 jumped in the holder and Michelle had her hands full. Mike pulled the chain and moved us out of the hole into the middle of the river. Michelle had the brute to the boat in less than a minute. Mike didn t believe the fish was so close and it was just barely light in that section of river. Michelle politely said GET THE NET!!, so as a good husband does I dove for the net and managed not to loose her first landed fish of the trip. Mike said not too bad for a dark 17# R. I had cleared the remaining rods when the organized chaos started and I wanted to get a reset ASAP, as this place was hot with splashing fish. I reset the #4 rod and went on to assisting, or more like getting in the way, of removing the plug hooks from the net and prepping for pictures. Michelle yelled #4! And gently nudged me aside (I was busy anyway), to snatch the rod up and winch another 15# Dark King to the boat. Mike couldn t believe that the one rod set by itself had got a strike and that Michelle had successfully landed, in short order, her second King in less than five minutes. Mike knighted her the Salmon Slayer which she admirably accepts. After I lost a nice King under a Michelle suggested rig of running spawn under a bobber ( Demon River Lumber), we moved down river Michelle yelled Fish-On... a nice King, headed down river towards a blow-down. Fortunately luck was with me and I was able to get him turned around and back to the boat. I had to get one today as Michelle was getting hard to sit next to, with all the Salmon Slayer banter. We headed further down river to run some steel head gravel beds, but it was late in the day and surely they had been pressured earlier on. We met up with Dave Kane who gave us his trip report. Terry & Sean had an unbelievable Day 2 (a 50% landing rate is very good, anything above is considered awesome). They fished a number of the same areas that Michelle and I had the day before. This day the Steelies were active, in force (only 1 King, out of the 8 fish landed for the day). Dave Kane had been pre-warned by Mike Bright Jr. of Terry s previous days battle with the Demon River. Dave didn t have a couch on board, but was able to restore Terry s confidence with some great Steelie action. Day 2 Results: Michelle & Eric: 4 for 8; Sean & Terry: 8 for 12 We had a quick cold one while splitting up the trips catch and headed back to reality..at peace. with the Demon River. Story by Eric Braden and edited to fit; contact Eric if you would like to read the REST OF THE STORY!! 7

The cabin only holds 10 people and I think we have 8 already, only 2 paid so far I believe we're going to try a pot-luck for dinner. Rest of the rules and food will be discussed as soon as I'm done with my Water Extractions!!!!!!!!!!! Mark Platt, Manistee River Outing Chairman New Members New Member Introductions: Russell Calvert: Russell and wife, Doris, are from Ann Arbor. Captain Calvert has a 22 Grady White named Brandon Too! Marty Drum is Russell s sponsor; Russell has been a crewmember on the Drum Beat several times and has decided to join MWS. Russell is an avid walleye fisherman. We expect to see him and his crew on a few salmon and steelhead tournaments in Doris and Russell, welcome to Metro West!! Scott Kwiatkowski: Scott is sponsored by Clyde Schoen - a long time friend. Scott said I would like to attend the meetings and meet some individuals that have the "fever" for fishing like I do. I would be interested in learning more about salmon fishing and walleye angling. I would like to be able to post reports since I believe that we should help out the cause. I usually fish with Clyde and have been doing so for about the last 15 years, but I would be interested in fishing with others. I am 30 years old and engaged to a wonderful woman - Jessie. I currently reside in Commerce Twp. and like to hit the inland lakes in Oakland County for bass and walleye fishing when I am not out on the big pond. I recently caught the fever for salmon fishing after fishing on a charter in Leland, MI. I am looking forward to the 2010 spring fishing and Clyde and I will be fishing on April 16 ( we have been doing so for numerous years...opening day for us). I am an attorney. Scott, welcome to Metro West; we look forward to meeting Jessie. Mark Lewallen: Mark and wife, Laurie, live in Garden City - both love to fish! Mark s comment about participation in Metro West I want to participate any way I can. I have only caught one salmon but I joined the Club because my family and I will be surrounded by some of the state s best teachers. I would like to be a crew member on some of the tournaments next year. Mark and Laurie went on their first club outing by joining the group that went to the St. Mary s River Outing in October. Ron Maschke is Mark s sponsor - and Uncle and Jeff Bustos is a friend from Ford - so Mark is hooked up with some pretty good salmon fishermen! Now to get him and Laurie on a few more salmon outings next summer! 8

Tournament Report St. Mary's River Outing October 10, 2009 A few Metro West Steelheader members, 10 of us including wives and friends, fished the St Mary s River in Sauté St Marie, Michigan this weekend. Some of the guys went to Canada to fish the rapids where they saw lots of fish going up the rapids. Fish were being caught using spinners and Cleo s at the rapids. Some fish were caught at the power plant on the U.S.A side. Some of the fish were snagged (NOT BY US). The fish that were caught were Atlantic salmon. Some fish were nice looking and some were very dark. We all had lots of fun and lots of laughs. A great time was had by all. Fishing was not good. The weather did not cooperate either. It rained and snowed a little on Saturday afternoon and the temp was a very cold 30 degrees. We ate a whole lot of food and visited the Soo Locks and went to the casinos. We had a great tour of the Lake Superior State College research center that is in the Power House in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. This was very interesting for all of use to see all that they do for fish research and the raising of these Atlantic salmon and Lake Sturgeon. Those that participated this weekend were Jeff, Phil and Karen Bustos, Ron Witte, Ron & Goldie Maschke, Mark & Laura Lewallen, Craig Bradley, Steve Nealy. I would like to thank all of the members that made the trip. We were talking about doing this again in the 2010 season. Submitted by Jeff Bustos Ron Witte reported: Basically it was a very laid back trip. The weather was certainly a factor and several people forgot their passports. The best part for me was the trip to Canada with Phil Bustos on Saturday morning. We scouted the rapids but did not fish since Phil needed to get back to launch the boat for some fishing in the powerhouse area. We saw several dead salmon (and) also spoke to one fisherman who said he caught 3 fish casting 3/8 oz Little Cleos from 7:00am to 10:00am. Next time up there I would certainly go there to fish. When we got back to Brimly it started raining and needless to say the boat only got wet on top - no launching. Then, since we hadn't eaten for the last half hour we had lunch. The trip consisted mostly of eating, shopping, hanging out, etc. We did fish from the wall at the powerhouse casting all kinds of lures but had no takers. The Indians were getting some with the weighted treble hooks used to snag. Probably the most interesting part of the trip was the tour of the Aquatic Research Lab run by Lake Superior State University. They are well into Atlantic Salmon research. our members should read the detailed article on the front page of the 'Great Lakes Sport Fishing News'. The people we spoke to that day, suggested that Roger Greil (I believe he heads up the program) would be willing to speak at one of our meetings. Reckon that pretty much covers my comments. I suggest that a trip should be added to next years list of outings but scheduled earlier. Cheers!!! 9

Sharing among club members. Karl s Salmon Boil This is done in one pot. The best set up is a pot with a matching insert sieve. Bring 3 gallons of water to rolling boil. Add ingredients according to how long an item takes to cook. While waiting for the water to boil, melt 1/2 lb butter, add lemon juice, 1 cup chopped parsley and 2 tablespoons or more pressed garlic. Set aside. Elapsed time Amount Ingredient Prepped Minutes in boil 0 minutes 3 lbs Potatoes halves or quarters 30 1 lbs Carrots large chunks 10 minutes 2 lbs Onion large wedges minutes 2-3 lbs Fish large fillets 10 1 cup Salt, kosher or sea (don't skimp!) 30 minutes remove insert and let salt water drain off, put the goodies on a large tray. Pour the butter, lemon, parsley and garlic over everything. Serve. It is very important to not let the food boil with the salt for more than ten minutes. The large amount of salt keeps the fish from falling apart into mush but, too long in the boil will make the dish too salty. If you don't have a large sieve to insert in your cook pot, you can drain the food into a large colander. Keep in mind draining will take time. Too much time in the brine will over salt the food. Turkey deep fryer kits are a great setup, especially the kits with the included propane burner. If you want to make this dish with more goodies and flavors, here are some suggested ingredients, listed by the time they are best added to the boil. At 0 minutes, with the potatoes: At 5 minutes: At 10 minutes: At 25 minutes: Rutabaga, pumpkin, squash Corn on the cob broken into halves or thirds Sweet potatoes, whole mushrooms, 1 jalapeno pepper asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, greens As a new member to Metro-West Steelheaders I have thoroughly enjoyed learning new fishing skills. I have also been very fortunate to have fished with several veteran members in excellent water. These veteran club members have been generous with sharing their knowledge and wisdom. I learned a long time ago that sharing knowledge with peers always pays the giver back in more and better knowledge in the end. I can tell you that Metro-West veterans have learned and practice this as well. On one of these great trips, Clyde Schoen Captain of the Fishing Machine, invited me to be deck-ape in Erieau Canada. We caught some nice fish and Karl Szulczewski, fellow crew member, shared a delicious way to prepare the salmon. Enjoy! Submitted by Mark Davis Hi Mark and Caryn, Comments: Just a note to say how much Henry and I enjoyed the evening at your home last week. Your hospitality was warming AND your fish boil yummy. I shared with my sister your additions of onions, asparagas, and chard, Mark. Yum! Topped off with homemade apple pie...it just doesn't get much better. Thanks for thinking of us. Nancy Nabors 12
