2 2 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS The Prez Sez Is it really spring? Rain, wind, snow - when will it ever end this year? This should be giving everyone the chance to get their ishing gear cleaned up and ready to go. I inally got the chance to get on the waters of Lake Erie, but to no avail. The water has been darker than my coffee, and I just don t think the ish can see far enough to see the bait. Now is the time for everyone who plans to travel with a boat on a trailer this year to take notice. If you own the trailer you have a responsibility to yourself, your guests, and the rest of the public on the road, to prepare for the occasion. Trailering a boat can be a challenge, but with proper planning and a little care and maintenance, it should not be a problem. For those who don t own the trailer, you may think it is not your responsibility, but that s not true. You need to pay some attention to the details as much as the owner of the trailer. I am going to attempt to outline a few of the major areas of concern so hopefully your trip will be safe and uneventful. First, tires are one of the biggest reasons you see boats and trailers sitting at the side of the road going nowhere. Underin lated tires are the number one cause of tire failure on the road. Check the air pressure before the tires get hot and properly in- late them before you leave. Don t forget to carry a tire gauge, tire jack, lug nut wrench, and of course a spare tire. Second, bearings are your next big item to check. Bearings get hot and the grease can almost liquefy, causing it to run out if not sealed tight. Also, when you get to your destination, and drop the trailer into the water, before allowing the bearings to cool down, the water likes to displace the grease in the bearings. Let them cool down before launching the boat so you won t lose the grease. Carry a grease gun with you and always use a good grade of grease when you need to re-grease the bearings. Next, make sure you tie the boat to the trailer. Just because you can t lift the boat, does not mean the boat cannot and will not move on the trailer. The bow of the boat needs to be CHAINED to the trailer and the stern should be either tied or strapped to the trailer. A great deal of damage can occur to the boat in transit if it is not secured properly to the trailer, to say nothing of leaving the trailer. Chains are next. Chains should only be long enough to attach the tow vehicle, but not long enough to allow the tongue of the trailer to touch the ground in the event the trailer becomes detached from the vehicle. Also, and most importantly, the chains are to be crossed ONCE and ONLY ONCE before attaching to the vehicle. Crossing the chains once, and only once, will cause the trailer to track behind the tow vehicle if a separation occurs. If the chains are not crossed once or they are wrapped so as to shorten them so the trailer tongue will not touch the ground, you loose the effect of the trailer tracking behind the vehicle and the trailer can swing all the way to the right or left if separation should happen. Your next concern is balance. Your load should have a slight balance forward. The forward tongue weight should equal about 7% of your entire load, including all your gear and the trailer. Your load on the boat should also be balanced to avoid side to side sway on the road. A few other things to check are the lug nuts on the trailer, the lights on the trailer, the hook up to the vehicle and loose things hanging down like dock lines and swim ladders. Now if you folks that don t own the trailers think it is not your problem, think again. Most of the time your re going to be traveling in the vehicle with the person who does own the load and they sure could use your help. You have a responsibility to double check all these items for your own safety. I also know a second check is always helpful and most owners will appreciate and welcome your help and concern. Safety is everyone s job! Have a safe trip and I ll see you on the water. Our May 3 rd meeting should be another big event. Don t miss it. Fish On Clyde Schoen MWS President

8 8 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS Hello, anglers. Ah, Spring in Michigan. Crappy weather...steelhead in the rivers. I was up north for the Michigan TU Council meeting on Saturday. Planned drift-boat ishing on the lower Manistee was scrubbed Sunday morning due to approaching cold front. Well, living 4 hours from the Manistee and being right on its doorstep yesterday, I just had to give it a chance before heading home. Two hours of wade ishing in crappy conditions off the south side of Tippy Dam just below the coffer were rewarded with this nice steelhead. I went to school on a couple young anglers who were leaving just as I got there. "They're liking chartreuse today." Wasn't exactly on a ly. It hit a small chartreuse ice jig...only thing left in my vest that was chartreuse. It is so fun catching big ish on small hooks. (It was the right call to not launch boats with that front coming. Thunder, lightning, rain, snow, sleet. That wasn't so bad...it was the wind picking up that inally chased me off the river.) As you can see from the photo of my car, the weather turned horrible while I was ishing. But from all the spinouts in the ditches on the drive home, I guess the road conditions weren't any worse from waiting. Dan Keifer (MWS Member) Fishing Report Sunday, April 17, :43 AM I was in Wellston for a few days chasing steelhead, and I did fairly well. I ished on the Big Manistee and Little Manistee rivers. The DNR passed a total of 3,200 + steelhead this past week and the weir is open for passage of new ish. I suggested ishing above the coffer on the Big Manistee... the ish hit for about a half hour around 7:30 AM. I left at about 9 or 10 to ish the Little Manistee. I stopped at the Grand yesterday to see if anything was going on. Fish were still moving up the ladder at 6th street. It was windy with light rain...i ished about a half hour and didn't hook up. I did see one ish caught across the river. Now, for the walleye report I received from my friend. His sons and their friends ish quite a bit on the Detroit River. A couple days ago one of them caught a 15+ walleye in the river. Report is there are a lot of ish in the "alley." One of the guys ished the lake last week and caught 5 ish over 13 lbs. I don't know if he kept them... I hope not! I would like to get out "soon" but the wind is going to keep me landlocked. I may have to head back to Wellston, I have to do a couple "chores" before the "boss" sets my clothes in the street. At least I'll have my ishing gear with me. Oh, I am about done, as it is my golf season. See ya in the Fall to chase steelhead again. Good Luck... Robert Thomas (MWS Member)

9 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS 9 Michigan Steelhead Challenge March 26th Once again Metro-West proved to be better cooks than isherman. We ate like kings but, the Detroit Steelheaders walked away with the lead at the Manistee Steelhead Spring Challenge. Bill King, Bob Thomas, Remo Rossetti, Dom Liparto, Mark Davis, Jim Yo, and Dennis Trazcyk represented Metro-West. It was wicked cold out there, each day starting with sub-zero temperatures that barely reached freezing by the afternoon. On the actual game day, only Bob Thomas from the club landed ish. He picked up a nice 6+ lb hen and a smaller male, both on spawn. The Detroit team landed seven with Bob Paradise taking the two biggest steelies. On Friday, Dom caught a nice male on a spinner, heavy brass body with a silver blade. Bob Thomas had a 10 lb plus walleye that foul hooked on a small orange wobble glow and he had a nice chromer for a few seconds on the same lure. Mark Davis had a barely legal Steelhead that hit on a single wax worm drifted under a loat and a brown of the same size hit the same presentation a little later. Mark Davis Tournament Chair The big ish at the top of the photos are from the Detroit Steel Headers. The smaller ones are from Metro West. The boat in the photo is a hand made craft with great custom touches. The owner said it took about 10 months to complete. We all enjoyed a spaghetti dinner after the photo's, with all of the accoutrement's. A great day was had by all. said Dominic. From: Christopher Corden (New MWS Member) Sent: Sunday, March 27, :28 PM Henry: I didn't enter the tournament on the Manistee this weekend, but I was there with a friend of mine. The thermometer in my car read -3 when we launched my drift boat, but it turned out to be worth it. I landed four. The photo attached was the largest at a touch over 12 pounds. Christopher Owen Corden From: Henry Nabors Chris, you should have joined the tournament. You would have likely won and it would have helped the MWS team!! I have not heard how the MW Team did for the weekend yet. Congratulations!! Nicely Done!!

10 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS 10 Up coming event: 2010 Michigan Steelheaders Challenge and MWS Tournament - Sat. May 21st The Holland Steelheaders are sponsoring the second Annual Michigan Steelheaders Challenge. The entry fee for the tournament is $50.00 per boat, $10.00 for big ish entry is optional. One hundred per cent of the entry fees will be paid out in winnings minus any expenses incurred by the Holland Steelheaders. At least one current Michigan Steelheader must be onboard during the tournament. A new TEAM category is open to all out-of-town boats (outside a 40 mile radius). In order to promote greater statewide participation and provide additional port information and ishing tips, this category pairs an out-of-town boat with a Holland boat for a team event. If you are interested, please note on the entry slip. A drawing for all boats interested will take place no later than 5/19. The teams will be posted on line at the Holland web site Fishing period: 7:00 am to 1:00 pm; there is no run time, but you must be at weigh-in no later than 2:30PM. No ishing allowed before the tournament on the day of the tournament. Boats can only depart and re-enter the Holland Port and ish can be brought to the weigh-in by car or by boat. The weigh-in will be at the Lake Macatawa DNR launch over low parking lot ish cleaning station on Ottawa Beach road. The scoring system is ten points per ish and one point per pound. Go to MISH_rules2011.pdf (or go to the Holland Steelheaders web site) to print and mail in your entry form and entry fee. Wayne Linderman is our Port Holland Steelheaders Captain for the event and will be in touch... about the team event rules. I did call Gwenn Kolk at Yacht Basin Marina [P: (x 108) F: ] and she was able to get the Marina to agree to discounting the slip fee for boats under 30 feet. The slip fee is typically $37.50 per night. For this tournament only, out of town Steelheaders will receive a $7.50 discount and will pay only $30.00 per night when you call and identify yourself as a Michigan Steelheader. Holliday Inn Express is offering a discount as well and that is on the website. Hope this helps you get more boats from the Detroit area to venture over to Holland for the tournament. Dennis Eade, Holland Steelheaders Metro West Captains, do consider joining the Team category so you have a local captain to help you learn the area. MWS had six boats in the 2010 event. The tournament is on the MWS calendar and does count for C of Y points. Let s go ish with our friends from the Holland Steelheaders and other Steelheaders from around the State. If you have questions or want to chat, contact me. Henry Nabors - Metro West Port Captain/Coordinator
