SEPT, Challenge The Outdoors, Inc. A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SERVING THE RECREATIONAL DESIRES OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SPORTSPERSON President s Perspective, Larry Laehn, President I am deeply honored to be serving as the next President of this great organization. Challenge the Outdoors was successfully led through some difficult transitions by Harland Chapman over the past three years. Thank you Harland! My goals for the organization over the next year can be summarized using the CTO initials as a guide. Constant Improvement in serving the recreational desires of people with challenges. Thankfulness for the chance to make a difference in the lives of challenged people, members, Directors and supporters. Opportunities to enhance the organization s financial position, expand the organization throughout Wisconsin and establish property and/ or building for our headquarters. Your support and input regarding the organization is always appreciated. REFLECTIONS FROM PAST PRESIDENT, HARLAND CHAPMAN It is with trepidation that I relinquish the presidency of CTO, Inc. although I know that it is good hands under the guidance of your new president Larry Laehn. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the directors and members which made my tenure possible, profitable and rewarding. While there were some difficult moments, the friendships and opportunities I have gained over the past four years will be treasured in the years to come. I would like to also thank all the organizations and individuals that have helped us in any way, either with physical or monetary help. As we move forward into the future let us strive to Accentuate the Positive: and so far as is reasonable Eliminate the Negative. 3 3 CHALLENGE THE OUTDOORS, INC. TROUT - O - RAMA AND PICNIC BY: Larry Zander The day was almost as good as it can get. Clear skies and not to hot for most. Plenty of shade for those in need and we caught fish!! Some were pestered with blue gills, crappie, perch and bass but we did take plenty of Rainbow Trout also. Everyone got trout to take home. Gary Thyes was the champ taking 10 trout in no time at all. He was using a small blue and silver cleo. The fish didn t take all offerings with abandon. You had to fish for them! AND WE DID!! Even though the trout are good in size and big shouldered, I did hear some exaggerations. A 12 fish became 14 - a 14 became 16 - a 15 became 17, etc. I have no scientific proof, nor have I read any, that fish grow two inches after caught and in the cooler. But, it happened here. Larry Laehn was fortunate to have an excellent guide to fish with, his wife Mary., She outfished him two to zip, Larry did catch some gills and crappie and managed to scare the scales off a few trout. But, just like turkey feathers, scales are poor table fare. Steve Dalke was having a good time with his fly rod casting a Black Nose Dace, even though he spent most of his hours netting trout for others. Steve was a big help, coming early and staying late. Everyone was excited when they hooked a nice trout but, the most excited person I ve ever seen was Beth Miller. She burned a 20 yard path from the pond to the picnic area shouting for the whole world to here: I got one, I got one! And a good rainbow it was! Beth and her fish Karen and Bill Baehr, along with other people, once again set a table of food fit for kings. Juicy burgers and brats with more side dishes and deserts one could ever want. A big THANK YOU for all who brought the goodies to share. If you went hungry that day; YOU WEREN T THERE!! And thanks to all the ladies who helped with serving the food. Check Page 7 for the details on our next Trout Fishing and Picnic.

C.T.O. AWARDS BANQUET BY: Larry Zander What a wonderful turnout! After a warm welcome to all by President, Harland Chapman, we ate an excellent meal of chicken and fish with all the side dishes one could ask for; served with practiced efficiency by the staff at the River Rail Banquet Hall in Shiocton, WI. on July 26, Even after a big meal, no one got sleepy as the evening program moved along quite smoothly beginning with a very inspirational talk given the Jeff Pagels, NE Wisconsin Government Outreach Team Leader DNR, Green Bay. I believe every ear of the 78 people there leaned on every word Jeff spoke on the topic of Go climb your own mountain. He told the group to push themselves, to plan, to go a little farther, to take the journey to climb the mountain that is in everyone s life. Jeff s next challenge: Mount Kilimanjaro! Thank you Jeff and also thanks to Mark Baehr for making it possible for us to meet Jeff and his wife, Jane. Recognition awards were given to those who have given so much of themselves to further the goals of Challenge the Outdoors, Inc, along with many Certificates of Appreciation. It was so good to see so many people and other organizations becoming involved with CTO. Every one there received a really nice door prize. It was fun for all who got them and fun for all to watch. When it was time to go home we were given MANY compliments and told of how much joy the evening was for all who attended. IT WAS GOOD! BOARD OF DIRECTOR AND OFFICER ELECTION During the business meeting at the Membership Banquet on July 26, 2003 the following members were elected to a three year term on the Board of Directors: Karen Baehr, Mark Baehr, Jean Chapman, Gary Knapp and Bob Mayer. At the August 19, 2003 Board of Directors the following directors were elected as your officers for the year. President: Larry Laehn Vice-President: Larry Zander Secretary: Mark Baehr Treasurer: Jean Chapman CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!

5 5 th Annual Special Early October Deer Hunt Our 5 th Annual Special Early October deer hunt is pretty much set. This year, thanks again to the generosity of the landowners, our 9 hunters we will be hunting on hundreds of acres of prime deer hunting land in and around the greater Bonduel area. The hunt takes place from Oct. 4 thru Oct. 12 th. Our deer camp will be held on opening and closing weekends and we will be serving breakfast and lunch both Saturdays and Sundays. We will know the exact location within a week or 2 and will provide maps and directions to all who wish to attend. Once the weather cools down a little, in about 2 or 3 weeks, we will be putting together some work days at Bill Mayville s. We ll be repairing some of the old blinds and coordinating with the hunters to make sure their needs are met so their hunt goes off without a hitch. Each hunters needs are a little different and we will be relying on them to instruct us as to what their needs are. Ideally each hunter will be there so they can be a part of the pre-hunt preparations. This shouldn t be an all day affair. If you are able and willing to lend a hand with the blinds please call Mark Baehr at: (920) or him at: baehr68@aol.com He will provide you with the date(s) and a map with directions to get to Bill s. We are also in need of volunteers to help the hunters in the field both weekends. This may entail any of the following: transporting the hunters, being a hunting partner, and hopefully tagging and gutting their deer. We are also in need of volunteers to help prepare and serve meals both weekends. If you are able to lend a hand in any of these areas please contact Mark. We are all looking forward to another safe and successful hunt and invite everyone to join us in making it our best yet. We guarantee you will have a great time and in the process get to make some lasting friendships as well. Practice Makes Perfect With the Archery Deer season just a few weeks away many folks are getting geared up and ready to hit the woods and fields. Some have been scouting throughout the summer trying to pinpoint the precise areas where they hope to bag that big buck. And most importantly they have spent many hours fine-tuning their bows and practicing target shooting so that when the opportunity for a killing shot presents itself they are ready and able. It is this attention to detail and preparation and practice before ever taking to the woods that usually pays off in a safe and successful hunt. And like the old adage says, practice makes perfect, or at least closer to perfect. Don Rogalski, owner of the Bow Hunter Shop has generously agreed to allow any CTO member, who uses a crossbow, to come and sight-in their bows at his facility. The Bow Hunter Shop is located at W5251 Pleasant Road, Black Creek, WI. He has silhouette targets set up in the parking lot (east end) at a range of up to yards. You may go out there any time you desire during daylight hours. There is no set charge but a donation of $1-$2 to offset the cost of the silhouettes would be appropriate. Don has a complete archery shop and will be more than happy to help you out with any problems or questions you may have. Directions: From Black Creek - go south on Hwy 47 to Cty Rd A south off Hwy 47, (do not turn west on A!!). Pleasant Road is about 3 miles south on A, Turn left one block and you are at the Bow Hunter Shop. From Appleton: Go north on Cty Rd A to Pleasant Road (approx. 6 miles) and turn right to the Bow Hunter Shop. If you have any? s please call the Bow Hunter Shop at: (920) We are planning for an archery shoot at The Bow Hunter Shop this winter. We hope this will be of interest to many of our members, their family and friends. No date has been set but the months of January, February, and March are being looked at. The shoot will be open to all members, their family and friends. Look for more on this in our November Newsletter. If you are interested please call Mark Baehr at: (920) or baehr68@aol.com

6 REMINDER! BY: Larry Zander Little Lake Hilary is open to trout fishing any day of the week to all Challenge the Outdoors, Inc. members. The limit is 5 trout per visit and 10 per month per membership, including guests and helpers. Example: One membership and one or more guests, a 5 trout total per visit (not 5 trout per person). Please release blue gills, perch, crappies and bass. Thank You! Todd Malchow has been doing well fishing with bobber and full night crawler, no weight before the hook. He s thrown the tackle box at these trout and the crawler worked best for him. Toby Malchow has been taking these rainbow on a glob of crawlers. Bob Mayer took a couple of beauties with his new fly rod. Fran Sagert and daughter Emma took them on floating jigs. (A couple of rainbow are now wearing lip jewelry, pink and green jigs.) Bill Mayville and Chuck Nelson caught them on spinners. My grand-daughter Whitney hooked them on a small rapalla. WHAT WORKS BEST? Come and find out! Even though these fish are not fed as often as they were, they are getting bigger. There are a lot of them in the two pound plus class. With the promise of cooler weather the fish should be more active and willing to take your offering. P.S. Fran Sagert caught and released Gertrude. She s about 25 inches. THANK S FRAN DUCKS UNLIMITED GREAT OUTDOOR FESTIVAL There was a lot of heat and humidity on August 15th and 16th, and just plain warm on August 17th. But it was worth every bit of discomfort. We found new members, new volunteers, new landowners plus clubs and organizations to work with. As important as all of this is; the exposure to hundreds of folks who have never heard of Challenge the Outdoors, Inc now know who we are, what we do and why. Of course, the end result is the building of new opportunities. We take this space to thank those of you who were able to help out. A very special THANK YOU to Mark Baehr and Larry Zander who worked all three days, Karen Baehr for two full days and making sure we were all hydrated and fed. THANK YOU Larry and Matt Laehn, Roy Nelson, Bill Mayville and Harland Chapman who also generously gave of their time and talent.

7 TROUT O RAMA AND FAMILY PICNIC #2 SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 13, :00 A.M. TO WHENEVER! If you could not make it last time, do all you can to be there for this one. The trout are even bigger and the cooler weather should make them even more sassy. The rules are the same, each membership in CTO will be allowed 10 trout on this day. If three people are fishing on one membership, the limit is still 10 (i.e. 4 for one and 3 each for the other two). You folks who brought side dishes would you please do it again? Wow, talk about good eating!! These desserts were to die for! With a picnic table set like the last, I won t know whether to fish or eat. I m sure you will do both. Directions: Take Hwy 47 (Black Creek to the South, Bonduel to the North) to Shady Rd the Outagamie/Shawano Co line. Turn west 1/2 mile and you re are there. CTO signs will be posted. Any questions: Larry Zander Don t Miss this one Put it on your calendar NOW!! 8 Hunting and sight-seeing Opportunities await you at the Navarino State Wildlife Area With its many flowages, grassy meadows, low-land and up-land woodlots, and the Wolf River all providing such a plentiful supply of suitable habitat for waterfowl, wild turkey, deer, grouse, and squirrel it s no wonder why thousands of hunters and sightseers flock to the NSWA each fall. Located in NW Waupaca and SE Shawano counties the NSWA covers several thousand acres of land that provides for plenty of areas for hunters to spread out and pursue their wild game of choice. Of particular interest to physically challenged duck hunters is a wheelchair accessible duck blind located on Mc Donald Flowage. Also worth repeating is that persons with Class A or C Disabled Hunting Permits are eligible to apply for a permit to drive on designated roads within the NSWA. This permit could be just the ticket you ve been looking for to get you or someone you know back into the great outdoors. To get a copy of the permit and a map of the NSWA call the Shawano DNR Center at: (715) or write to: SHAWANO RANGER STATION, 647 LAKELAND RD, SHAWANO WI and request PUBL-WM REV. MUSKIE FISHING We will be fishing Shawano Lake sometime late this fall. The date is not yet set but, if you want to participate (Physically Challenged Persons and Helpers only) call Mark Baehr at or at baehr69@aol.com This could be an all day trip or two half days depending upon the number of applicants. 8 HELP NEEDED! BRAT STAND FUNDRAISER BY: Toby Malchow Despite the cold weather of April our first Brat Stand was a success. With lots of good volunteers we were able to raise a respectable amount of money. Thank you to all that helped and we hope to see all of you and more at Festival Foods, West Green Bay on the following dates. September 20 & 21, The hours are from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm daily. Volunteer as much or as little time as you can. All help will be greatly appreciated. Areas we need help in will be food service, sales, talking to the public about CTO S mission and services. There is a place for everyone to help. The more people we get to help the more fun we have. If you want to volunteer, or want to talk to someone about the Brat Stand please call: Jean Chapman , or Toby Malchow PLEASE COME!! Our Challenge the Outdoors, Inc. Board of Directors meeting will be held at the Muehl Public Library in Seymour on Sept. 16, 2003 at 6:30 p.m. These board meetings have always been open to the General Membership. It has, however, been brought to our attention that not everyone knew when and where. This will no longer be the case. All news letters will have the dates, time and place for CTO Board meetings. We welcome your presence and input. Tremendous growth is being formulated. Sept. 16, 2003 Muehl Public Library Main Street, Seymour Oct. 21, 2003 Muehl Public Library Main Street, Seymour

9 Chippewa Valley Chapter of FHNB 2003 Event By: Peter Lathrop, CTO Member This was the third year for Chippewa Valley Chapter of Fishing Has No Boundaries Event. It was held on Lake Holcombe near the town of Holcombe, WI on August 16 & 17. The event was at Paradise Shores Resort Hotel. The weather was sunny and in the high 80 s on both days. There were 50 participants and 100 volunteers. The main sponsor of the event was the Center for Independent Living for Western Wisconsin. Each participant received a FHNB hat and a FHNB backpack full of goodies during registration Saturday morning. Before the opening ceremony each participant got his or her picture taken. When I was walking back from getting my picture taken a TV reporter stopped me and asked me if he could ask me a few questions. He was from Channel 18 News out of Eau Claire. One of the questions he asked me was if I am able to go fishing at other times. I said yes and I told him about Challenge The Outdoors. A few minutes after the reporter got done interviewing me the opening ceremony started. After the opening ceremony the participants started getting on their assigned boats. My dad, 3 high school age boys and their attendant, and I rode on my brother-in-laws boat. His name is Scott Webster. My sister Joy and Scott have 3 children and they live in Holcombe. Joy also helped out with the FHNB event. Fishing was rough on Saturday. We just caught a few fish and none were keepers. The highlight of my fishing on Saturday is when I caught a turtle. I saw the turtle pop its head up about 3 feet away from my bobber and then about a minute later my bobber went down and I was reeling it in. It was a little painter turtle. We let the turtle go. We fished from 10 to 4 on Saturday. We ate a sandwich on the boat for lunch. When we came back into shore we ate dinner. A disc jockey played music while everyone ate and into the evening. Every participant left for their hotel rooms after they were done eating because of the heat, and they were probably tired. We went back to our hotel room also after dinner because we wanted to watch the news at 6:00. I was on the news but they edited out the part about Challenge The Outdoors. The part was on about me saying that Fishing is only a part of FHNB, it is also about making new friends, and getting to know people from around the state. Sunday the fishing was better. The boats left already at 8:00 a.m. The 3 boys and their attendant left Saturday night because they had to go to camp. So it was just Scott, my Dad, and I on the boat. Scott took us to Pine Lake, which is connected to Lake Holcombe. The whole lake is no wake, so the water was nice and calm. We anchored the boat near this stump sticking out of the water. We caught some nice keepers by this stump, including a few perch, bluegills, and a bullhead. We caught a total of 30 fish, 15 were keepers. We went back into shore at noon. Compared to Saturday, there were more fish caught on Sunday. The biggest fish caught were a 36-inch northern and a 16-inch bass. David Lato, the chair for the event, asked if there were some fish stories. Some participants told their fish stories. Volunteers then drew names for prizes. After the drawing was concluded each participant received a Certificate of Participation. They had the correct picture on my Certificate of Participation but the wrong name. This surprised me that they goofed this up seeing that I m a TV star. Just kidding, of course. They are going to mail me a new Certificate of Participation. After the certificates were handed out people stood in line for lunch. After lunch we said goodbye to Joy and Scott and children, David Lato, and some of the other volunteers. All in all it was a good trip. I wish we would have had better luck fishing on Saturday but that is the way fishing is. We met some nice people, so that made the trip better!

10 Just A Friendly Reminder Our slip rental on Shawano Lake, at Cecil, runs through September, so if you are planning on getting out on the lake for an outing you better reserve the pontoon soon. There may also be more fishing and sightseeing opportunities this fall. No dates or locations have been decided on as of yet but to be notified of outings if and when they are scheduled please contact Mark. Chance to Win a Camo Club Car This bit of information was passed on to us from our friends at the Little Wolf Gobblers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation from Marion, WI. They are raffling off a like new, fully camouflaged, two wheel drive Club Car. It comes with a roll bar and lift kit. See picture below. Tickets are $10 each or 3 for $20. For tickets call Tom Mijal at: (920) or Mark Baehr at (920) The car will be raffled off on November 1 st at Dave s Lakeview Bar at N11217 Hwy G, Marion. Thanks go to Toby Malchow!! In the fall of 2002 Toby learned that grant applications were being accepted by the Friends of the NRA. After doing much research the application was completed and set off with 12 copies to the State office of the NRA the end of November. Our proposal was accepted by the state board and sent out to the National Office in February. We were thrilled to learn in late June that our grant was approved and a check was received. These grant funds are to be used to purchase an enclosed trailer for CTO to transport equipment to our CTO events, which will eliminate the need for us to use members vehicles to take the grills, tables, tent, etc. CTO is in the process of finding the best trailer for our needs and will keep everyone informed. Thanks again to Toby for taking the initiative and making this possible.
