2 NOV 2006 Challenge The Outdoors, Inc. A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SERVING THE RECREATIONAL NEEDS AND DESIRES OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SPORTSPERSON Presidents Message: By Harland Chapman ARE YOU CHALLENGING YOURSELF? Since many of our members are physically challenged in various ways we endeavor to provide them with opportunities to participate in a number of events. While the objective of CTO is that of enabling, it is the individuals responsibility to challenge themselves beyond what they may consider possible rather than depend on others to do everything for them. We have at our disposal various items of equipment (See Page 8) to aid you along this line. We also provide many different activities that any sportsman would enjoy. It is only up to you as an individual to select those opportunities that you feel would enrich your life. However, don t be afraid to challenge yourself with new opportunities. While our main goal might be to help physically challenged sports persons challenge themselves it is also important for those blessed with good health to challenge themselves within and without the organization. Your involvement within CTO is expected. Please keep in mind that we are serving not only our own physically challenged members at our events, but, we also hold events for other physically challenged groups (i.e. Disabled Boy Scouts, Special Needs Phy Ed Classes). SOME OF US ARE GIVERS AND OTHERS ARE TAKERS WHICH AM I? With our organization growing quite rapidly (we are now serving 190 households), we therefore require more of our members to involve themselves. While most of us enjoy being given the opportunity to take part in all of the events we have, we must make sure that we are not just there. We that thought in mind, it you are at all able to provide help at or preparing for any event please let someone know as many times too much responsibility falls on too few people. Offer to assist however you can by calling the contact person designated to be called for each event (in the newsletter). If need be you can call the office at and you will be given the contact person s name & number. 3 3 SPECIAL DEER HUNT 2006 OCTOBER 7-15, 2006 BY: BILL MAYVILLE I feel that this year was a very successful hunt with the following totals: 27 hunters, 13 deer, some passed up shots waiting for larger deer, and many sightings out of range. There were very few hunters that didn t at least see deer. Thanks to all who helped with putting out the blinds, those who helped take the hunters to their stands, Karen Baehr and her kitchen crew for the fine meals at the Lessor Town Hall, A special THANK YOU to the landowners who allowed us to hunt on their land: Neil Christianson, J&H Game Farm, Len Fedler (Gillett), Todd Grunewald, Reed Johnson (Cecil), Bill Mayville, Dave Owens, Karen Owens, Dennis Rudie, Bill Stedjee and Brian Wendt. YOUTH AND LADIES DAY J&H GAME FARM SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2006 The following letter came to Challenge the Outdoors Volunteers from J&H Game Farm: On behalf of J&H I would like to say a great big THANK YOU! Thank you for sponsoring the fishing at our Youth and Lady Day. Buying the fish is great in itself, but also working the fish tank and the cleaning the fish I just can t say thank you enough. We look forward to working with you next season, your fundraiser and our Youth & Lady day. Please let the fish cleaners, CTO members Bill Ploor and Ivan Craig, Jr, know that we had several ladies comment on how fun they made the day at the fishing area. THANK YOU!! Diane Redmann, J&H Game Farm TROUT O RAMA AND PICNIC #8 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2006 Larry Zander I didn t get a count of how many of our CTO members showed up to fish but, I do know everyone who came took fish home. One hundred or more trout were caught. A big Thank You to all of the volunteers who make days like these possible, especially to the ladies who always set tables of food fit for royalty. And, Thank You Bill Mayville for serving all of the sweet corn. Also, this month 12 disabled Boy Scouts and their parents/guardians came for fishing and a picnic. This is their second year with this activity. What a wonderful time they had and each took home a trout. Thank You Pat and Kevin Nieuwenhuis for the great help on this day.

4 2 nd Annual Autumn Long Beards & CTO Spring Turkey Hunt By: Mark Baehr While the calendar says November and many peoples thoughts may be on turkey, the one that goes on the dinning room table on Thanks Giving Day, we here at CTO are thinking about a different turkey, the wild turkey and the 2007 spring hunt. Planning for the spring turkey hunt is just getting underway and over the next several months we ll be working out the details of the hunt with our good friends at the Autumn Long Beards (Clintonville, WI. NWTF Chapter). We will again be hunting in zone 22 and at this time we are planning for the 5 th (E) time period, which runs from May 9-13, but there was a discussion on possibly changing it to an earlier period. We will have a decision shortly on what time period we ll be hunting and at that time we ll contact those interested in attending the hunt what time period to apply for. What we do know is that all hunters will have to send in an application. The application deadline for the spring 2007 season is December 11, Applications cost $3 and are available at any DNR Service Center, Licensing Agent, or by applying online. Successful applicants will be notified via mail by early February. We re planning for approximately 18 hunters this year, and we have no doubt we ll fill up. If we do receive more responses from hunters than we have room for we will implement a preference system that gives preference to 1 st time hunters, then to hunters who ve not harvested a turkey and then to hunters who ve harvested a turkey. We don t want to discourage anyone from applying for a harvest tag but it could be very possible for you to receive a tag and not be chosen to attend the hunt due to your lower preference status. To prevent this from happening we are requiring all physically challenged people who want to hunt with us this spring contact Mark Baehr by December 1 st, 2006 to apply. Mark will record your information and contact you back to tell if you received preference to participate in the hunt. We haven t had to turn people away in the past but due to our continued growth we may have to this year. We will once again be reserving a camp for lodging, headquarters, and for preparing & serving food as well. The camp has outdoor camping areas, new bathrooms, showers, furnace, hot water, fully outfitted large kitchen, large assembly room with fireplace, 2 bunkrooms, and is wheelchair accessible. Hunters, volunteers and mentors will be able to check in on Friday and stay through Sunday. We will have a pre-hunt get together a week or two prior to the hunt to do some target shooting/patterning and other pre-hunt preparations. If you are interested in volunteering or have land you would allow a hunter on please call Mark Baehr at (920) or him at: baehrm@sbcglobal.net Keep an eye on our coming newsletters for more information. Thank You. Challenge The Outdoors, Inc. Holidays Party When: 12:30 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2007 Where: Sabre Lanes, 1330 Midway Road, Menasha, WI (920) Your Board of Directors decided to plan a Holiday Party for after the busy holidays. We all know how busy this time of year can be and hopefully all our schedules will be open for this later date. The party starts at 12:30 p.m. with a potluck lunch being served at 1 p.m. and bowling will be open until about 5 p.m. Please bring a dish to pass. CTO will be providing the main course. Several bowling alleys will be reserved for our members and there will be plenty of adaptive bowling equipment on hand as well. CTO will be picking up the cost of bowling. For those who aren t interested in bowling we ll have plenty of decks of cards available along with cribbage boards, yahtzee, and a few other board games as well. If you have other ideas for entertainment let us know and we ll try to make plans accordingly.

5 Challenge the Outdoors, Inc. Goose Hunt September 22,23,24, 2006 by Dean Sprangers, Goose Hunt Coordinator Thanks to everyone involved. Special thanks to the landowners, Scott and Jerry. They so graciously helped out getting hunters to the blinds and had let us stay in the bunk house Friday and Saturday night. Steve Lang, who helped coordinate the outing from the hunting area, phone calls and s to the WDNR. Lisa Gildernick, Steve Harvey, and Karen Baehr who worked hard to prepare the food, and the miles they put on to get there. Mark Lindsay, who volunteered his time, bringing his 4 wheeler and trailer to help get hunters to the blinds. Jerry Schick and his friend made a big meatloaf and pizza casserole for Friday night s dinner. Friday, Sept. 22, 2:30 PM. set up camp. Pitch the tents and unload all the stuff. Wow there s a lot of stuff. As others arrived, we all pitched in helping one another to ready the camp. And when the geese started to fly, most of us brought out the gun and started hunting. At dusk, hunting hour has passed, the food is warming, the group sat around telling stories because there weren t any birds to clean. Larry Faust and I went to town to retrieve the camper at his relatives. On the way to the hunt, Jerry Schick, and Larry had trailer hitch troubles, a weld had broken and the hitch was dragging on the ground. Lucky for them it happened in town and not on the highway. When we returned with the camper, dinner was served, and more stories are told. Have you ever tried to sleep with 6 others in a bunk house, most of them snoring. Saturday morning, breakfast is served. Hunters get out to the blinds. It s foggy, real foggy. You can hear the geese, and all of a sudden, there they are flying low, and the sound of gun fire going off. It was a perfect day to be goose hunting. By late morning, the fog was lifting and alot of happy hunters have bagged a bird or two. And others that needed more ammo. Our other volunteers came to make lunch, and what a wonderful job they did. With our bellies full, the hunters commenced hunting. And then the rain came. Just to put a small damper on things. But we had 2 carport tents put together, making lots of room for everyone to gather around. At days end there were 14 birds in the cooler. Tommy Narmore harvested his first ever wild game. James Luebke, lefty, bagged a bird his first shot. I met James the day I checked out the hunting grounds two months prior. I talked him into joining the hunt that day. You see, James had lost his right arm in a hunting accident 15 years ago, and has only hunted squirrels a couple times since. And today he s a goose hunter. I hope he continues on, to once again be a big game hunter. Dead eye Steve Lang bagged 2 birds as did others in the group. And Ron Kowalski, our new friend from the north woods. Furthest traveled to the hunt and happiest guy there. Ron ed me Sunday afternoon and says I arrived home about 12:30. sore, black and blue, muddy, and as happy as I was when I was 19 playing Sunday neighborhood football in the mud. Sunday, we awake to yet another weather change. The wind switched around to the north and has blown the tents back about 2 feet. Scrambling to get breakfast started and the tent back in order to serve the morning meal. With everyone lending a hand it didn t take long to get all the hunters out to the blinds by daybreak. The birds were flying high today, catching the north wind as they headed to the fields to eat. Our one novice hunter, Steve Lang, did reach out there to bring down a bird. We then took the tents down after lunch and said good bye to a few of our hunters. Bruce Martell was able to bag a bird, sitting in blind number 8. Two geese were flying low as they came across the field, west to east. Candice did her share of duties, setting up a tent, helping when asked, but she doesn t do dishes. She also packed a lunch and delivered it to our Sunday, all day hunters. Bob Mayer and his son Jim, sat out in blind number 2 from daybreak to dusk. Oh we checked up on them from time to time, bringing water or soda. And then late in the day, just before closing, the birds started to fly again. Still kind of high in flight, the hunters began shooting. We didn t come to watch the birds, we re there to shoot at them. And the last bird of the day came down for Jerry Schick. And what a happy hunter he is. Today s hunt total of 3 birds. A lot of fun by all the hunters. Even the volunteers had a great time. And a great thanks to Challenge the Outdoors, Apple Bagel, River City Ice, and Culligan Water for the sponsorship of this great outing. We hope you all can help in other activities to get the Challenged individuals to challenge themselves in the outdoors.

PHEASANT HUNT SUNDAY, DEC 17, 2006 By: Larry Zander, Vice President WE RE DOING IT AGAIN!! So much fun was had last year (even with the cold day) that the hunters who participated asked to do it again. YOUR WISH IS OUR ENDEAVOR! Last year we had eleven participants. This year we are going to use two fields and two dogs. We feel we can accommodate fifteen hunters this year. It is important that you call me at and sign up for this great day by December 10, Also it is important that we all gather at J&H Game Farm by 8:00 a.m. so that we can team up hunting partners, set the fields, and have the first team hunting by 8:45 a.m. PLAN on making this day an all day event and not go home until late afternoon. All birds taken will be cleaned and bagged (if you wish) and divided as equally as possible to all participants, even if you did not take (kill) a bird yourself. We want for all to enjoy this fine table fare at home and once again bring back a memory of a fine hunt with new and old friends. We also welcome a partner, helper, husband, wife or a friend to enjoy the day with us. Lunch will be served off the menu when all hunters are finished at no cost to you. Challenge the Outdoors, Inc is doing it again!! Lake Michigan Salmon Fishing By: Bill Ploor, Director On Wednesday, August 23, 2006, we had a fishing venture on Lake Michigan out of Seagull Marina in Two Rivers. We had 13 of our Challenge the Outdoors, Inc members take part: Mark Baehr, Jim Weiser, Charlie Ande, Jerry Schick, Chris Olsen, Emily Olsen, Rachael Olsen, Jeff Brown, Joe Brown Sr, Bob Eckstein, Mike Smith, Tyler Smith and Katie Smith. It was a day of days. We had 6 boats to take people out fishing. I would like to thank those captains and mates. The weather cooperated so we had semi-smooth seas and nobody got sick. By 7:00 a.m. all boats were out fishing and when the boats came in you could really tell what kind of day they had. Some looked tired and some where happy until you asked how they did and then their arms went up and apart and smiles and laughter came out. Every body caught fish and lost fish. The total caught was 33 Kings and Rainbows. The boat that did the best was the Loner with Mike Smith and children, Tyler and Katie. They caught 10 fish. A job well done. The biggest fish honors for the handicapped goes to Charlie Ande with a 21 lb King and for the able bodied it was Jim Weiser with a 20 lb King. At this time I would like to thank all of the people who helped: the Ploor family, Bob Boris, James Vanne, Seagull Marina Staff, Joy s Restaurant, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Globe Laundry, and Citgo Express. On behalf of all the people who helped we hope every body had a good time and we will see them next year for another trip.

7 Minnesota Broken Wing Pheasant Hunting Event By: Jerry Schick Pheasant hunting & the super volunteers are beyond your wildest dreams at this event. From the moment you get there the friendliness and welcome is over whelming. We had a super fish fry Friday, great banquet of steak, baked potatoes and all the fixings on Saturday. Breakfast and lunch were served out in the woods. Everyone shoots 50 clay pigeons Sat morning to check marksmanship and capabilities. Crossbow shooting with 3D targets along with the clay pigeons are available at all times. A good way to pass the time while waiting for your ride to the hunt. Three fields are available, with a limit of three birds from each of the two fields you choose to hunt on. Back-up shooters are available for those with a need or request. The Sunday morning hunt is a no limit hunt for the remaining birds. My partner, Patrick Nieuwenhuis, and I managed a total of 21 birds on the hunt and fired at over 500 clay pigeons, all with shells provided by the event. WHAT A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE By: Terry Towns Satisfaction is not good enough expression for the way I feel. Excitement and wonderment is much better. Were it not for all of the people who made this Special Deer Hunt possible, I would not only have been able to take part in the hunt but, actually have been successful in the taking of two deer, one doe and a 6 point buck. Even more than this; great new friends became part of my life experience. The venison will be a nice addition to our family food budget. I also have a special needs son who loves being around water and loves to fish. I am sure our family will be taking part in may of the CTO events. CTO will be a part of my family for a long time. Again Thank You to all of the super people of CTO for making another everlasting memory. A special thanks to hunt master Bill Mayville and member Gary Thyes, who let me stay at his cabin for the hunt so I did not have to commute from Oshkosh. A bag of goodies is presented to each shooter which included such items as: scent blocker, bladders, rattle bags, gun oil, shooting sticks, doe in heat, and the list goes on. Those were donated by Knight & Hale, a company that produces all of the items. All food, prizes and shells were donated by businesses, corporations and friends of the Broken Wing Connection through the State of Minnesota. No one wanted to leave on Sunday. So many new friends were made, it was hard to say good-bye. A sincere thanks to CTO for passing on the information to myself and Patrick about this event and for their sponsorship. Pat & I couldn t have had a more wonderful time! THANK YOU!! Challenge the Outdoors, Inc would like to take this opportunity to thank the following: Nicolet Rifle Club for the monetary donation and for the Site In Day they had for physically challenged. Joe Palmer of Manitowoc who donated a Sit Ski for our members to enjoy. 8 8 Cost Sharing Program for Adaptive Equipment Catching on! When we created our cost-sharing program, in Dec. of 2004, we weren t sure what kind of response we would get. A year and one-half later we re glad to report that we ve had several members take advantage of the program purchasing crossbows, hand cranks, and an adaptive thumbhole gunstock. We are still waiting for our 1 st adaptive fishing equipment request. For those unfamiliar with our cost sharing program here s how it works. CTO will help our physically challenged members purchase adaptive hunting or fishing equipment by picking up to ½, but not to exceed $100.00, for the cost of the piece(s) of equipment 1 time per year. For example, say Jane purchases a crank for her crossbow and it cost $ CTO would reimburse Jane $ To receive reimbursement for a piece of adaptive equipment you are considering purchasing or to see if a piece of equipment you ve purchased qualifies please contact Jean or Harland Chapman at: (920) *Note, keep your receipt and get a duplicate copy of the original because we will need a copy for our records. And if you return the item please reimburse CTO. There are many sellers of adaptive equipment so shop around and check our website out for links to sellers and suppliers and as always please show patronage to the many businesses that have been so good to us over the years by giving them your and our business. For a list of these businesses contact Larry Zander at: (920) Thank you. CTO LOAN CLOSET IS ALWAYS OPEN!! We currently have the following pieces of gear available: 20 camouflaged hunting blinds, 4 crossbows (with case, quiver, arrows, and broad heads), 4 Archery target bags, 2 electric fishing rod & reel combos, several small tackle boxes with terminal fishing tackle (hooks, jigs, sinkers & bobbers), 3 shooting chairs, several gun/bow rests, 4 Ice fishing shelters (Donated by The Wingettes of the WOW), an adaptive bowling ball, and a complete set of adaptive golf clubs (Donated by CTO member Pete Jensma), Sit Ski (Donated by Joe Palmer of Manitowoc). To check a piece of equipment out or donate contact either Larry Zander at: (920) , or Mark Baehr at (920) If you have a suggestion on a piece of equipment that you think our members would find useful please forward the idea to one of the directors for action. We are in the process of making a complete inventory of all equipment owned by Challenge the Outdoors, Inc. and where it is located. If you have borrowed any CTO equipment and it is still in your possession please contact Patrick Nieuwenhuis at: (920) or Mark Baehr at: (920) Thank You. SPONSORSHIPS AVAILABLE In 2006 CTO will again be accepting requests from our physically challenged members for grants or sponsorships that will allow them to attend outdoor recreational events sponsored by other organizations. In the past members have received grants and sponsorships to attend events sponsored by; Fishing Has No Boundaries, Inc., Twist of Fate, Inc., and Ski For Light, Inc. For members to be considered for the grant or sponsorship we are requiring that they be active and in good standing with our organization. Being active could mean; helping with our fundraisers, putting up fliers, handing out brochures at an informational booth, serving on a committee, etc. Requests will be considered on a case by case and a first come first served basis. To be considered for a grant or sponsorship and to learn of volunteer opportunities please contact; Bob Mayer (920) or by crossbowkids@sbcglobal.net or contact Mark Baehr (920) or by baehr68@aol.com

9 NOT ENOUGH CAN BE SAID! By: Larry Zander, Vice President This is so true when it comes down to the people who MAKE IT HAPPEN. Challenge the Outdoors, Inc. within it s ranks has the most energetic, selfless, giving and loving people of any organization I have had the privilege of knowing. And, I ve been around the horn a few times so I know what I m talking about. When we members take part in one of our outings or functions we all know it could not have been put together without a lot of effort by one or many individuals. More than us a few times I ve been told: I signed up as a volunteer but nobody ever calls me. Here s the rub! It s going to take a few more volunteers to make calls to folks who signed up in the hope that their schedule will coincide with a particular activity. We all get a Challenge the Outdoors, Inc newsletter noting upcoming activities. If we ve taken the time to read the letter we would know who to call to help with any particular event. Remember! We need you! We need you even if you feel you cannot perform as you d like. Moral support is as important as any other ICE FISHING OUTING By: Mark Baehr We re looking ahead to winter, well sort of, and another ice-fishing outing. At this time we have not decided on a date for the outing but will have a date set by our January newsletter mailing. As with all our other ice-fishing outings CTO will be providing: bait, shelters, heaters, and food to all participants at no cost. Volunteers are always welcome as we will need help cutting holes, setting up shelters and tip-ups, baiting hooks and hopefully unhooking some BIG FISH!! We ll let you know when and where we ll be headed in our January newsletter. Until then enjoy the warm weather while you can winter is coming soon! PLEASE COME!! Please note that the November Board of Directors meeting has been changed to the Second Tuesday (Nov 14, 2006) due to the regular Board meeting falling during deer hunting.
