Is it just a way for people to enjoy the outdoors? Is it a way to social network? Yes, Yes & Yes. On a recent hunt, I meet a guy that had taken a blind gentleman out hunting, and just not any kind of hunting, but spot & stalking for wild Russian Boar. The disabled hunter, even though he could not see with his eyes, he could see with his ears. They marched through tall, thick grass until they were within 50 yards of the Russian Boar. The disabled hunter turned on his laser scope, the helper watched the red dot laser and helped the blind hunter line the shot up, and BANG!!! One wild Russian Boar down. What does this have to do with CTO? Well, CTO can t do anything alone. It needs to be a partnership between participants (the hunter) and volunteers (the helper). Without one or the other, this partnership doesn t work. CTO only works if its members are willing to participate in the events being offered. Everyone must be willing to try and overcome any obstacles that may stand in their way. CTO is about overcoming obstacles, enjoyment, and having fun doing it. But let s always remember, we can only do things if there is a partnership between participants and volunteers. Next time you re at an event, thank the people helping you. After all, they are part of the reason why CTO works!!! 3 3 MUSKIE FISHING NOV 5, 2010 By: Jeff Pagels, Director We can't promise the great weather we have had here in Green Bay the past week, but we will go out on a limb and promise open water, no bugs and guides who know more this year than last year. And, we are hoping and praying that the old adage, "the third time is the charm" will also come true for the CTO Fishers, The Day is Friday, November 5th and will start officially at 9:00 am for those booking passage on the CTO Pontoon Boat, "Challenger" We can always use volunteers who can bring a boat to help us get CTO members out there under the assumption that the Challenger will have a full load. (If you have your own canoe, yacht, inner tube or other fishing device feel free to access the water as early as you want in case you know of a sleep deprived fish wandering around.) Our headquarters will be the same as last year at the Green Boat Landing on the east side of the Fox River at the mouth of the Fox River in Green Bay. (By the way, the public boat launch has a $5 launch fee. If you cannot absorb the cost, please pay the fee on site and give Jeff Pagels your launch sticker after you have taken your boat out of the water at the end of the day. If you choose to take a chance and not pay the launch fee, CTO will not be able to help you with the rather hefty fine, In order to make sure we have enough food, boats, gear, How To Catch a Musky Handbooks and bleachers for the hundreds of spectators anticipated to be watching this exciting event please let one of the CTO event organizers know your plans about attending. Depending on Mother Fate, we should be heading back to shore by 11:30, if the conditions are poor, we might stop early and if conditions are fantastic...lunch (free) can wait awhile. All for now, but you might see some updates if deemed needed. Goose Hunt 2010 Recap By: Steve Lang The 5 th Annual CTO Goose Hunt was another huge success!! With 8 hunters taking to the field to trying to harvest a goose in less than ideal waterfowl hunting conditions, our hearty and determined hunters were able to bring down 2 geese and 5 mourning doves over the 2 ½ days of hunting. Everyone may not have packed the freezer with birds, but everyone sure did pack their mind, body and souls with great memories and laughter that they will never forget. For upcoming years, CTO members will now be able to hunt in this hunt AND STILL be able to hunt in the exterior zone for geese!!!! Thanks to the help of Keith Pamperin, and the DNR, we have been given an exemption to hold a disabled goose hunt in the Horicon Zone, without losing your right to hunt in the exterior zone. 4 Challenge The Outdoors Shooting Opportunities Sporting Clays: If you are a disabled sportsperson and would like to try your hand at shooting Sporting Clays do we have a deal for you! Every second Tuesday of the month at 11:00 am shooters meet up at J&H Game Farm in Navarino, WI. What you will need to bring is a shotgun, Ear and Eye protection. CTO will provide ammunition and the cost of shooting one round of sporting clays. Due to the extra cost of some shells we are currently only providing 12 and 20 Gauge shells. If you shoot a different Gauge you will be asked to provide your own ammunition. Note: When we shoot Sporting Clays at J&H. most of us come early (around 11:00 am) and enjoy a casual lunch at our own expense from the great J&H menu. We start gathering our equipment and loading up around 12:45 to 1:00 pm for a great afternoon of shooting. It takes each group of shooters about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to finish the course. In the summer months be sure to bring water and skeeter spray!! Trap or Skeet Organized League Shooting Teams. If you think you might be interested in becoming a member of a shooting team or starting your own team and would like to apply for CTO funding for yourself or your team. This is very frustrating because some people miss coming to some of our events, and important information is delayed. The amount of money we have to pay sending out the newsletter is getting quite high. Also the price of toner for the copier, copy paper, address label stickers, and the special sealing stickers required by the post office per newsletter is getting quite pricey too. We decided to send out our newsletters by to those who would like it sent that way, and we will still be sending out our newsletters to those who don't have a computer with an provider. Those who are interested in having their newsletter by and will have it within a day or so, please e -mail Jean Chapman a note that you want newsletters, and give her your . 5 5 SPECIAL DEER HUNT OCT. 2-10, 2010 By: Rod Barkhaus Opening weekend of the Special Deer Hunt came in with cooler temperatures and the deer were on the move. Above normal temperatures for the rest of the week probably made the deer and our hunters a little less active, but we did enjoy a safe and very successful season. We had 43 hunters registered this year and well over half of them were able to hunt at least one day. The volunteer helpers did a fantastic job once again and everyone had a good time. I will not list the helpers by name as I could miss someone and that would be a shame. You all know who you are and my heart-felt thanks go out to every one of you! Many CTO members as well as friends and family of the hunters showed up to help make the hunt a reality. Karen Baehr and her crew did another great job of feeding everyone. The food was excellent and I probably had a little more of it than I should have. Those helping in the Kitchen were Bill Baehr, Jackie Bird, Angie Kempen, John Kempen, Jan Mau, Christy Baehr and Nolan Baehr. 10 of the hunters that reported to the Lessor Town Hall bagged deer this year. Those taking antler less deer were: Larry Lane, Bob Cleveland, Todd Lyons, Conrad Kaufmann, Harland Chapman, Patrick Nieuwenhuis and Ken Gorecki. Our Buck-Slayers were John Kempen with a 5 pointer and 6 pointers were taken by Leonard Colegrove and Chris Vandermeuse. Congratulations to all of you! Special thanks also goes out to the folks at Riesterer & Schnell for loaning us 3 John Deere Gators this year. We gave the Gators a good workout and several of our harvested deer got a free ride out of the woods on one of them. Lastly, remember to thank the land-owners whose generosity in loaning us their land for 9 days made this hunt possible. If any of the hunters would like to send a card or thank you note, and you need an address, please give me a call and I will get it to you. They really enjoy hearing from you. I hope to see you all back in 2011! Elevated Hunting Stand Earlier this spring, Shadows on the Wolf donated their Elevated Hunting Stand to Challenge The Outdoors. We have used this stand for the past several years during the Special October Deer Hunt and we will do so again this year. There was some discussion at the CTO board meeting in July as to loaning this stand out to one of our members for use during the regular gun deer season or possibly other seasons like muzzle-loading or the late archery season. We have not worked out all of the details as of yet, but it was mentioned that only wheel-chair bound hunters should be allowed to borrow it. The hunter would be responsible for transporting the stand, setting it up, returning in a timely manner, etc The board will continue to work on this issue to see if loaning it out is feasible or if we may be opening a big can of worms. We have had problems with items from our loan closet in the past and this might be another problem in the making. Members see an extra-inning Timber Rattler game By: Peter Lathrop, CTO Director Thirty-two members attended a Timber Rattlers baseball game and picnic on August 14 at Fox Cities Stadium. The weather was sunny and warm. Member Min Mateer was a good sport and threw one of the ceremonial first pitches. The Rattlers fell behind 3-0, but then tied the game in the 5 th inning. The game was tied 4-4 after 9 innings. Cedar Rapids scored a run in the 11 th. The Rattlers had a man on first and second and two out when Hunter Morris came up to bat in the bottom of the 11 th. He smoked the ball into the outfield. As the ball headed towards the center field wall the crowd erupted with excitement. The ball hit the wall for a two-run double to give the Rattlers a 6-5 win. The Rattler players celebrated on the field and the crowd celebrated in the stands. This was the Timber Rattlers first extra-inning victory of the season. PLEASE COME!! Highlights of Board of Directors Meetings August For the awards program Jeff Pagels will add Rock Bass to the Panfish category and Catfish to the Rough Fish category. These categories are for the longest fish. September The CTO Sittin Ducks Trap Team was the top team on Wednesday night at Brown County Sportsmen s Club and Dave Samsa was the top shooter. This was in the newspaper.

7 7 My Russian Boar Hunt CTO Field Grant By: Steve Lang Thanks to a CTO field grant and some help from my brother, I had the opportunity to go Wild Russian Boar hunting at the TNUSA Sunrize Acres Ranch in Hancock, MI. I had talked with Paul Wilson (the guide) a few times on the phone, and he assured me that we would hunt in any manner that I wished. I had told him that I wished to hunt with my crossbow, he had told me that it would be an exciting hunt, so I should prepare for some excitement. My brother and I arrived at the ranch early on a Friday morning, around 6 am. We met Paul and he explained where to shoot the Boar and what type of cover we would be hunting in. We soon loaded up the truck with my crossbow, wheelchair and a few blinds. Just as the sun was coming up, I could see a huge Russian Boar to my right, but there was a big rock pile behind him, so I decided not to shoot because of safety. About an hour later, I had a sow come right up to the pop up blind I was sitting in, but I decided to pass on her. I was hoping to get a shot at the big one I had seen earlier. It got to be around 9:30 am and I was not seeing anything else when the guide arrived to see how things were going. I told him I had seen a real nice one, but it was gone. Paul went to look for it and it didn t take long and he was back by me. He told me that it was down the trail behind me with a sow. Paul then asked me the unthinkable, Do you want to do a spot & stalk? I didn t really know what to think, so I asked how he wanted to do it. He was quick to assure me that he would give me a push when needed or carry the crossbow if needed also. So with a smile, I said, Let s go for it, I m game. So across the open grass field we went in search of the Russian Boar. Paul spotted the one that I was after and told me to stay in this small opening in a tree line. So I rolled up to a huge rock on one side, while Paul walked up the back side of the trees in hopes of pushing (or scaring) the wild Boar towards me. We were hoping that they would just walk on by me and follow the trees. Well the best laid plans never seem to work right. Paul was able to push the pigs towards me, but as they walked down the tree line, but as soon as they saw me, they turned towards me and we were in a face-off. Now the Russian Boar were only 5 yards away, snorting, digging in the dirt and staring right at me. I only had my crossbow on me. No extra bolts (arrows), no hand crank, no knife. Paul did have a rifle with him and he assured me that he would keep me safe, but he was over 400 yards away and there was this huge rock in the way, I was all alone. With what seemed like 4-5 minutes, which was probably only 45 seconds, the sow finally turned to walk away. The Boar started to look towards her, then looked and stepped towards me another time, before starting to follow the sow. With my heart feeling like it was beating through my chest, I raised the crossbow up and took a shot at the huge boar as it was walking away. I saw the bolt hit, it looked like a good shot as the pig ran away. Soon after, Paul came running around the corner of the rock and about knocked me over and said that the Boar was down about 15 yards away. He was excited as I was, it was a perfect shot!!! Paul said he saw the shot and knew that I was okay. The Russian Boar was 320 lbs. The hunt was something that I will never forget!!! I can t thank CTO, my brother, and Paul enough for making this a hunt of a lifetime. I may not be able to get around like some other people, but I sure got the experience that others never could get.

8 8 Sept Trout O Rama By: Larry Zander Threatening rain and cool, but only a few dribbles, started the day and sometime in mid morning the sun decided to warm our bodies and spirit. This day once again gave more laughter, giggles and grins than one might find in a whole city. If you were not there you shoulda been. These rainbow trout are absolutely as fine as they can get with an average size of about 15 1/2 inches. The largest was 18 1/2 caught by Josh Robak. The second largest was caught by my 7 year old great granddaughter at 17 1/4 inches. Bothe of these fish were caught by youngsters of family memberships. It look like it was Roger Connelly who took the largest for the physically challenged members at 16 3/4 inches. Karen Baehr and her crew? It can t get bedder dan dat. Good and great food in abundance. Hauling in all those great fish work up an appetite. Thanks to all who brought all that good stuff. What a Great Day!! 2010 J&H Hunt Club Youth & Ladies Day By: Larry Zander Compliments and Thank You s were once again commonplace at the trout fishing area. CTO and it s fabulous volunteers once again gave a lot of kids and ladies a day to remember. As the day started we didn t think many folks would show up with pretty good rain, then misty and cool. Were we wrong?? You Bet!! 425 ladies and kids along with plenty of men participated in every outdoor one could imagine, Of course the CTO trout fishing was once again a main attraction. Every CTO volunteer ended the day with solid gratification of knowing they helped make a lot of someone s day a whole lot better. Thank you J&H for giving CTO anther opportunity to show the general public of who we are and what we do!! 9 CTO Member Strikes Gold at the Annual Special Deer Season I have been a hunter all of my life and with opening of the Wisconsin Special deer season I was pumped with the hopes of taking a buck! Since being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2002 I sort of wasted some time before joining CTO. I finally joined CTO and soon began enjoying a host of recreational events including this special deer hunt despite the overwhelming fatigue caused by MS. This year opening day was on October 2 nd. CTO had provided me with hope and a way to continue with my passion for hunting and being in the outdoors. A driving force of CTO is all of the wonderful volunteers. Our opening day was launched with a wonderful brunch at the Lessor Town Hall, coordinated by Karen Baehr and gracious helpers. Len Fedler, along with many other farmers allowed their land to be used for the hunt. I was driven by my volunteer, Bill Rimicci, to my deer blind on the Fedler farm around 1:00 p.m. It rained off and on all day and I was beginning to wonder if I would see any deer. As the day progressed I was happy when the sun came out and even happier when a 6 pointer came out of the woods. He immediately started snorting, and I think we both knew something was wrong as he kept his focus on my blind. I was waiting for a larger buck but due to the loud snorting no other deer broke from the woods. As the 6 point was about to turn back into the woods I knew I didn t have enough time to grab my shooting stick so I put my crosshairs high on his neck and fired. The buck disappeared behind a knoll and I didn t even know if I hit him. 9 At the close of the day when Bill came to get me, he found my 6 point buck lying dead on the other side of the knoll. I had aimed for the neck but the slug caught the buck lower in the spinal cord and it dropped like a box of rocks. Other volunteers gutted, and loaded my deer into my vehicle. It was another great day in the outdoors, the kind of healing day that helps the reduce the pain and limitations we all have, the friendships get stronger and the preparation of ( I swear memories ) for future storytelling events Story by Leonard and Jane Colegrove with editing by Jeff Pagels

10 2nd Annual Shadows on the Wolf & CTO Spring Wild Turkey Hunt This coming springs hunt will mark our 2nd with the Clintonville area chapter of Shadows on the Wolf. We can t say enough about how much their support means to our hunters and to CTO as an organization. Without their strong support and help in getting landowners permission, physically transporting hunters into the woods and fields and providing their skills in calling, this hunt would have never become the success that it has truly is. We extend a very well deserved Thank you to all the fine people in Shadows on the Wolf. 10 We are planning on running the 2011 hunt May 14 & 15, the weekend of 5 th week of the Wild Turkey season in zone 3. Lodging will be reserved for the hunt at a camp located a few miles from Clintonville. The Camp has worked out very well in past years and plans are to have the camp open on Friday May 13 for early arrivals. The Camp s Lodge will serve as hunt headquarters. We will be accepting approximately 12 hunters and giving preference to 1 st time hunters then to those who have hunted but not harvested a turkey and finally to those that have harvested a turkey. We have not had to turn any hunters away, yet. Hunters will need to apply for a Spring Wild Turkey permit by filling out an application for zone 3 and time period E(5). The deadline for applying for a Spring Wild Turkey permit is December 10, If you re interested in participating in the hunt, have land available for our hunters, or would like to volunteer please contact Mark Baehr by December 1 st, 2010 at: (920) or by at: baehrm@sbcglobal.net There will be more info in up-coming Newsletters. Thanks! PHEASANT HUNT # 9 J & H GAME FARM Sunday Dec. 12, 2010 Assemble by 8:30 AM This hunt has become one of our most popular events. Through trial and error we are now conducting this hunt quite smoothly. Coordinating birds in field dogs and handlers -machine operators hunting teams backup shooters cleaners and baggers great food etc is part of the activity. The best part of the day is once again enjoying each others stories. For those of you who have never taken part in this hunt, let me encourage you to do so. Do not be concerned about your ability to shoot. We ll work it out. We ve been fortunate to have every hunter take home two birds for their families and friends to enjoy and remember another great CTO outing. Each hunter is welcome to bring with them family members or a friend (wife or girlfriend not both). If you don t have your own gun not to worry. We will handle that too. But you must use your own shells. Field loads of 4 to 6 shot size is recommended. The food is always better that good, thanks to Joanne and her J&H kitchen crew Remember! 11 Field Grants Program Guidelines Challenge the Outdoors, Inc At the September, 2007 BOD meeting, revisions were discussed and approved for the CTO Field Grant Program. The program is designed to aid physically challenged members of Challenge the Outdoors, Inc to experience once-in-a-lifetime outdoor recreational events that they can not otherwise afford to attend. To be eligible to apply and receive funding under the Field Grant Program, an individual must be a disabled member of Challenge the Outdoors, Inc for at least one calendar year. These grants (a maximum of $200.00) are not available to non-disabled members of CTO. 11 A Field Grant will not be awarded to an individual for participation in another organization s event if CTO already conducts a similar event. The Field Grant Committee and Board of Directors can consider an exception under special circumstances. Persons that have received funds under the CTO Field Grant Program are not be eligible for another Field Grant to participate in the same type of event in the future. For example: A disabled member of Challenge the Outdoors is awarded a Field Grant to hunt Pronghorn in Wyoming. This member may not apply for another Field Grant to hunt pronghorn in the future. Cost Sharing Program for Adaptive Equipment Catching on We know adaptive equipment can be a bit pricey so our hope, by creating this cost sharing program in December of 2004, was to help our physically challenged members offset that cost and encourage them to purchase their own equipment. Thus creating more independence for them. So far CTO has helped several members purchase adaptive hunting equipment including crossbows and hand cranks, and an adapted gunstock. We are still waiting for the 1 st adaptive fishing equipment request. For those unfamiliar with our cost sharing program here s how it works. CTO will help our physically challenged members purchase adaptive hunting or fishing equipment by picking up to ½, but not to exceed $100.00, for the cost of the piece(s) of equipment 1 time per year. For example say Jane purchases a crank for her crossbow and it cost $ CTO would reimburse Jane $ To receive reimbursement for a piece of adaptive equipment you have purchased or to see if a piece of equipment you re considering purchasing qualifies contact Jean or Harland Chapman. (920) *Note, keep your receipt and get a duplicate copy of the original because we will need a copy for our records. And if you return the item please reimburse CTO. If you are looking for sources of adaptive equipment there are hundreds to choose from so shop around and check our website out for links to sellers and suppliers and as always please show patronage to the many businesses that have been so good to us over the years by giving them your and our business.
