2 The T.C.D.A. annual banquet and awards ceremony was held on May 31 st at Flaherty s. We had a good turn out and a fun night. Our top two annual awards, the Sportsman of the Year and the Charles F Stutz Memorial Award, were given to two very deserving individuals. This year s Sportsman of the Year is David Lawrence. David is always thinking of ways to attract new members and his enthusiasm and sportsmanship are hard to top. The Charles F Stutz award went to Jim Hunt. Jim not only stores our portable standards, but he hauls them to and from our major events and spends countless hours working on them at his shop to keep them in good working condition. I congratulate both men and thank them for all they do for the T.C.D.A. Since our last issue of the Bull and Ton we have also completed the election process. Jan Von Oppen was re-elected to another term as board member at large and we welcome back to the board two long time T.C.D.A. members and former board members. Karin Fisher will be joining the board as a board member at large and Mike Anderson will be our new Vice President. Both have served on the board in the past and I look forward to working with them again. Now that summer has arrived many of us, myself included, have set aside our darts for other activities. There is however a small group of members who gather at the Moose on Monroe every Tuesday night for some friendly competition. If you find yourself with a free Tuesday, stop in at the Moose for a few games. In closing, mark September 2 nd on your calendars. That may seem like a long way off but summers always seem to fly by and it will be here before you realize. That will be the night of our fall general membership/captains meeting and the kick off to our next season. The venue will be announced in August. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy your summer. Until next time, good darts, Jeff Hafner President T.C.D.A. Annual Banquet The T.C.D.A. Annual Banquet/Party, held on May 31 st at Flaherty s Pub in Arden Hills, was a great success. Approximately 75 T.C.D.A. members & guests attended and enjoyed an evening of socializing, dinner and winning door prizes. There were lots of door prizes given out, including $200 (donated by the T.C.D.A.) divided into various mystery cash envelopes. Of course, the program also included the presentation of awards. Recipient of the T.C.D.A. Sportsperson of the Year was David Lawrence. Recipient of the Charles Stutz Award (presented by Charles Stutz himself) was Jim Hunt. Both of the gentlemen receiving these awards were extremely deserving. These long-time members have both given of their time to promote the T.C.D.A.,

3 bringing ideas and helping with events where needed. We congratulate David Lawrence and Jim Hunt. They certainly have our Special Thanks! Teams received 1 st and 2 nd Place plaques for winning in their respective Divisions for Fall 2013 and Spring And we can t forget that alluring and sometimes elusive Ton 80!! Those who captured one or more of these during Fall & Spring were also recognized. Lists of 1 st and 2 nd Place teams/members, as well as Ton 80 achievers, are noted following this article. Following dinner and awards, a luck-of-the-draw tourney was held for all attendees who wished to participate, as part of their dinner package. First place honors in the tourney went to Chris Grieman and Mark Wojciak. With a very close final match, Second place went to Randy Groen and Steve Little. Thank you to all those T.C.D.A. members who helped make this event a great one. And a special Thank You to Flaherty s and their excellent staff who made our evening a truly enjoyable one. 19 Ongoing feature Starting with this issue of the Bull & Ton, there will be series of articles written by a former member of the T.C.D.A., Jack Fischer, who wrote several articles about darts and darting. Jack passed away some years ago, however, his thoughts have been captured and will be published here. The first of many articles is included in this issue. The ongoing feature will be called, Jack s Corner. Enjoy the first article in Jack s Corner. We thank, his wife, Karin, who has graciously supplied these articles to be published in our newsletters.

20 Introduction First and foremost, let the author be very honest with you, the reader. When the embryo of writing the book came into my mind, my sole purpose was to make as much money as possible. As time wore on I then realized that what was taught to me verbally becomes a gigantic task to put into writing. My waste basket dumping suddenly got to be an hourly routine. I never knew that writing a book and making it understandable, plus holding your Jack s Corner interest, could be that difficult. Certain parts of certain chapters were done over and over again. Obscenities flowed from my mouth likened to water out of a faucet. It doesn t pay to ramble on the various paragraphs although it would make this a bitter book, it would most certainly lose your interest and no doubt, you, the reader, have had your share of those books. BE HONEST WITH ME If you as a dartist are great, near great or think you are, please finish this paragraph, lay this book down and walk away. The teachings in this book were as taught to me and if they differ from your methods, doesn t mean they are wrong, if you are one of the above, goodbye and good luck. Now, on the other hand, if you admit to yourself that you are a beginner and not ashamed to lose a few because you like the game, this book is for you. You and I will go step by step from one page to the other until you become comfortable with your darts and above all else, yourself. Do not skip pages to seek a kind of magic that will make you an instant success. This cannot be done. You may have to reread some pages to fully understand basic and sound advice. ********** This book will not lead you down the primrose path of glory, nor will you revel in the joys of being a world champion, much less gain social prominence where fellow darters will stare at you in envy. All that is asked of you is stud and doe practice so you will win more than you lose. Maybe, just maybe, losing will become a rarity. Now reader, before you turn the page, let me say three things: 1. Light a cigarette, open a beer, coke or anything that relaxes you. Settle down in your favorite chair and read the entire book and then go through it again page by page. 2. Read, study and practice in the quiet of your home. 3. Take your time. There is no hurry. You have been a loser for so long, a little longer won t hurt. SELF CONFESSION Don t confess this to anyone or anybody but yourself. You are lousy at darts, but you love the game and can t understand why you don t improve. If you do this you have lust learned lesson number one. If you don t admit it, why else did you buy this book? You know anything worthwhile doesn t just happen. You have never dug for gold but you must realize a lot of dirt must be moved before you find one small nugget. If you are the type of person that reads this book but doesn t digest it and haven t improved one iota, don t blame this book. You have spent some hard earned money to buy it and if you don t practice, what you read or persist in your own methods and will not change, blame yourself, not me. Now if you are beginning to learn the game or are willing to improve your have, I envy you. The techniques and strategies that will be revealed to you in the following pages, I have yet to find in any Dart Book I have ever read. My only prayer is that the information that you gather will be as simple to understand as it was when my instructor taught me. I believe everything that my Teacher taught me. Now let s see if you do.
