P.O. Box Royal Palm Beach, FL Find us on Facebook January 2019 President s Message, Our January speaker was Allen Black on Novelty Brassavola/Cattleya Alliance Breeding - Spiders And Stars. Allen Black came all the way from Virginia for his presentation and provided us with an opportunity to purchase some of his rare seedlings. There were several takeaways from Allen s presentation that we can all benefit from: 1.This is a hobby for Allen and all of us too remember to enjoy yourself and have some fun showing off your blooms, 2. Learn Patience from seed to bloom is often 7 years, give your plants what they need and be patient and 3. Allen readily admits his errors, laughs at them, learns from them and moves on. Our next meeting is Valentine s Day February 14 th and it is our Annual Auction. Patt Lindsey has ordered orchids locally from Springwater Orchids as well as plants from Hawaii, to ensure we have a variety of plants to please all of our members. Come early to decide which ones you have to have and want to bid on. Our Past President, Jacob Galeski, will be our Auctioneer. If you have plants you would like to donate, please e mail or facebook message to Doris Happel at dbhappel@bellsouth.net with the name and if you have a photo of the bloom. Doris will be compiling our list of plant offerings. Remember 100% of the proceeds from member s plants goes directly to support our Orchid Programs throughout the year. Today is January 28 th and tonight is our fifth cold front of the year with a low forecast at 49 degrees tonight. I personally take this as a reminder to be selective in my purchases and to buy things I really like and that I am willing to do a little work on them to make sure they survive and thrive. One of my favorite Orchid Growers, Sheldon Takasaki, the owner of Carmela Orchids in Hawaii, will present at the Boca Raton society s February 7th meeting and guests are welcome. His program is titled "Easy Growing Orchids and Some Other Things from Hawaii". The meeting is at 1790 NW Spanish River Blvd, off of Military Trail in Boca. Many of us know Sheldon as a vendor at Tamiami, Fort Lauderdale and Boca shows and from his monthly mail order specials. Carmela has been in business for over 50 years and has an in house lab and provides high quality orchids. The last time, I had an opportunity to hear Sheldon speak I drove 2 hours for the meeting. Sheldon is here locally for the Boca show, so this is a rare treat. Happy Growing, Wayne 1
Hello OSPB, Today is Sunday morning as I am starting to write this newsletter. The rain we have all been praying for is finally here and is coming down by the bucket load. It has washed away most of the dust and greened-up all of the landscape. It looks like it is covering all of South Florida and will last all day. I am so pleased to have a rainy day but I do have mixed emotions too. Later this afternoon I must drive to the War Memorial Auditorium in Ft. Lauderdale to help Thanh Nguyen; Springwater Orchids, take down his display and retrieve my dozen or so plants that I loaned him for the exhibit. We placed 3 rd in the 150 sq. ft. Open Class- Commercial displays. I sure hope the rain will let up long enough to get them loaded into my truck. I hope most of you had an opportunity to go to the FLOS show. It truly is one of the most beautifully done still in existence with its huge, incredibly artistic exhibits. Once again our friends Mac and Helen Rivenbark; Mac s Orchids, with help from John Romano; won all the awards with their outstanding display. It is a lot of work to build an exhibit. I helped with the Springwater exhibit. We started at 9:00am and finished at 7:00pm. There were others with larger exhibits who I m sure didn t finish until 10 or later. Everyone had to be completed by 11:00. The transformation of the arena is a sight to behold. When you first enter in the morning it is total chaos with plants and trees and tables and boxes and stuff everywhere. There are narrow pathways through it all to get from one area to another but as the day progresses everything falls into place to create this magical, tropical wonderland of breathtaking displays and sales booths of beautiful plants to tempt us all. It s just amazing. My hat s off to the FLOS show-team and volunteers who take on this monumental task every year and create this outstanding event for all of us to enjoy. The Springwater Orchids exhibit 2
Members and guests packed the house to welcome our January speaker, Allen Black. I enjoyed meeting Allen and seeing his program. I came away with 3 of his coveted seedlings. I sure hope I have the skill to grow them up to blooming size. They are very special. Allen has 80 AOS awards for his hybrids. He does his own flasking and is really excited by the seed breeding variations he is able to achieve. His goals are to entertain himself, have fun and produce some interesting, unusual and beautiful new hybrids. He especially likes the results he gets from Brassovola species of cucullata, nodosa, subufolia and flagellaris. Brassovola s like intermediate to hot conditions; nodosa s do well in very bright light and will tolerate full sun; cucullata s prefer shadier conditions. He grows all his seedlings in sphagnum moss. Allen and his wife have no children but over the years they have had several Pugs. Many of the cultivar names of his hybrids are named for their beloved pets. Layla Black, Best Pug Ever, Pug Wisdom, Pug Charisma to name a few. He has a very keen sense of humor and I hope we can get him back soon to do his program on Home Orchid Sex, Orchid Breeding 101. I m sure it would be very interesting. If you have not already done so, check out his website His greenhouse is only 10 x 16 and the picture he showed us of it, buried in snow, made me very grateful to be growing in South Florida. I tried my best to convince him to move to Florida. Imagine all he could accomplish here in the Sunshine State with those extra months of growing. 3

Additional Presidential Accolade Our own Patt Lindsey displayed 12 of her specimen orchids in Springwater Orchids display at the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Show, which won 3 rd place of all the vendor displays at the Show. The orchids in the exhibit need to be spotless and in impeccable condition. In recognition of her contribution to the Display, Thanh Nguyen, the proprietor of Springwater gave Patt the 3 rd Place Crystal Trophy. We want to wish all our February birthday members a very Happy Birthday and remind them to bring refreshments to the auction on February 14 th. Vanessa Duncan, Julia Foulk, Martha Lawson, Patt Lindsey, Bill Madden, Shili Miao, Marie Reddy, Michelle Salzar February 9-10 Boca Raton Orchid Society Show and Sale 10:00am 5:00pm Admission $5. located at the Safe Schools Institute 1798 Spanish River Blvd. on the Don Estridge Tech Middle School Campus For more info ORCHID NAME Every orchid has 2-4 parts to its name: Genus, Species, Cultivar, Award; if any. Part 1: Genus there are hundreds of genera in the orchid family. Family names are Vandas, Cattleya, Paphiopedilum, Oncidium, Dendrobium, and many more. Part 2: Species or Grex there are thousands of species (nature made) and grex (manmade as in hybrids). That s what the second part of the name describes. Part 3: Cultivar or Clonal orchids designated as superior have a cultivar or clonal attached to its name. Part 4: Award if there is a 4th part of the name, it is an award. AM/AOS means the orchid has received an Award from the American Orchid Society. So, the beautiful orchid above is called C. lueddemanniana Arthur Chadwick AM/AOS which means it s Cattleya genus, lueddemanniana species named to honor the grower, Arthur Chadwick and it has won an Award of Merit from the American Orchid Society. 5
Shh.. It s a secret. Did you know OSPB has a well-stocked library of orchid books on wheels, in the back, at the Mounts auditorium? These books are available for you to borrow on a monthly basis. We have not had a volunteer librarian for a few years. If you would like to volunteer for the job of librarian, that would be great. Talk to one of the Board members if you are interested in applying for the job or you would like to borrow a book. We need a webmaster. Do you have internet experience with Word Press? We need a webmaster who can add information to our existing website. If you would be interested please see me at the next meeting dues are now past due. Please bring your check for membership to the meeting Feb. 14 th or mail it to OSPB - PO Box Royal Palm Beach, FL $30 single member, $35 Family membership. If you re not sure if you ve paid, see Alan, membership chair, at the next meeting. Thank you. February 9 th 10am Noon The Saturday Hands-On Workshop begins another season at the Park Pointe Clubhouse on Jog Rd. If you have a problem plant, bring it to the meeting and Charline Nakamura will diagnose its problem and tell you how to care for it. She will also help you divide and repot your plants. Bring your own potting supplies, and media. This is a great opportunity for you to learn how to care for your plants from a 35+ year orchid grower. The cost to you is $1. yes; one dollar. That s a real bargain and you might also win a prize; for more information call Charline February 14 th is our annual orchid auction. Preview plants at 6:30, auction starts at 7:00. Come enjoy the evening with us. Donate a clean, pest-free plant or two, if you can. We will have a nice selection of plants for you to bid on. Tell everyone you know. Share the joy of orchid growing. Bring a friend. I hope to see you all at the auction on Valentine s Day. Come buy your Sweetie a beautiful orchid. The restaurants are too crowded on this night anyway.
