1 Gulf Coast Orchid Society Newsletter December 14, 2014 Merry Christmas Everyone! The December Christmas luncheon and orchid bingo will be held Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at the Jeff Davis Community College located at the corner of located at the corner of Runnymeade Rd and Debuys; just north of Pass Rd. We will meet in the cafeteria meeting room. There will be no Show and Tell, raffle or Orchids 101. There will be no Show and Tell because the show and tell tables will be full of great eats and bingo plants! Members enjoying a great lunch and good company at last year's Christmas luncheon Last year's bingo plants One of our bingo plants; C. J. A Carbone 'Exotic Orchids x C. loddigesii; the color and shape come from loddigesii. There are other loddigesii crosses in our bingo plant collection. This will be a covered dish luncheon and orchid bingo, playing until everyone wins a plant. We will provide the meat, drinks, and paper products. Members are asked to bring a covered dish. Those who bring a guest can buy a bingo card for their guest for $8.00 per card; one card per member/guest. This is our cost; you can t buy a nice plant that cheap anywhere around here. As was stated in last year s newsletter: Guests are welcome but since we have a limited number of plants please don t bring Uncle Gene and Aunt Margie and all eight of their children plus Grandma Smith and no, her two dogs can t bingo. In fact no pets are allowed! While we are on the subject of what is allowed please remember no smoking on campus. If the school even thinks we are smoking on campus they will ask us to leave. No liquor either. ABOUT THE PLANTS The plants are exceptional this year; Glen ordered most of them from one of the better Hawaiian dealers, Exotic Orchids of Maui and he also got some outstanding plants from the OrchidWorks. Photos of some are scattered throughout this newsletter. AWARD PLANTS: We will award plants to the top three point winners for the year from our display table, and award a plant to the member who brought in the most best plants. We will then draw names from the list of members who brought in plants during the year and they ll get a plant. This is our way of thanking those who went to the trouble of bringing in plants for the display table. You must be present to win the drawing. For our new members, we keep track of all plants brought in for show and tell during the year. If you bring in a plant you get one point, if it wins a third place ribbon it gets another point, if it wins second place it gets two more points and if it wins first place it gets three more points. If you only brought in one plant during the year and you are present for the drawing you will be eligible for the drawing. JANUARY MEETING: January 11, 2015, Planning meeting for our 2015 show, January 29-Feb. 1. Each year our show gets smaller and smaller. This is good in a way as it becomes less work and hassle and more fun. We hope to make our January show prep meeting fun too. We ll

2 talk about our advertising and cooking plans; talk about our exhibit and the plans for it and find out which members can help. Hopefully our mock show showed most of you some of the fun things that holding a show entails. Den. Kauai Evening Song "Grape Fragrance' FEBRUARY MEETING: Feb. 8, 2015, Thank you meeting for those who helped with our January Show. Everyone who participated in our show gets a free plant and the winner of our dessert cook-off gets first pick for winning the dessert cook-off and another plant for working! FUTURE PROGRAMS: We are trying to bring in some speakers for some of our meetings. If there is a speaker or topic you d like to hear please let Jo Ann know. March 8, 2015 Getting Back to Basics April 12, 2015 open May 3, 2015 This is the first Sunday as many of our members are going to the Redlands trip. This is our annual covered dish banquet, orchid auction and installation of officers. Joy Lorens Robert Stanton and Judy Rush judging our mock show exhibits SPECIAL BATON ROUGE MEETING: Feb. 18, 2015 the Baton Rouge Society will host Laurie Skov of Santa Fe, TX who will speak on Stanhopea or Gongora at the Burden Center on Essen Lane at 7:00. REDLANDS TRIP: Because so many of you signed up for the Redlands trip we changed the date of our May meeting to May 3 rd. We would like all those who go to Redlands to consider being part of a Redlands program for our June or July meeting. Take plenty of pics and we ll work on the logistics later in the year. It would be great to hear from our more novice orchid growers. REFRESHMENTS: Chip Lechner will bring January s refreshments, Dave and Vicki Perry will supply February s. We have volunteers signed up through our April meeting and will pass out another signup sheet then. Janet Bridges and Valerie Scurria will bring refreshments for March and Joy Lorens will bring them for the April meeting. If you d like to bring refreshments or change your assigned date; call Andra at Jo Ann Vaz and Judy Harris beside their 30 minute exhibit Glen Ladnier and Shari Harshbarger beside their 30 minute exhibit NOVEMBER MEETING: The mock show held for our November meeting was fun. Our teams did a great job with only thirty minutes to do an exhibit! Thanks again to all those who participated. That big white Dendrobium in Glen and Shari s exhibit won best plant. It is owned and grown by Harry and Beverly Stephens. UPCOMING SHOWS: Here s a list of local shows January 30 Feb. 1, 2915, Gulf Coast Orchid Society Show, Gautier Convention Center, Gautier, Ms

3 February 27 March 1, 2015 Mobile Area Orchid Society Show, Bellingrath Gardens, Theodore, AL April Houston Orchid Society Show and Sale Houston Museum of Natural Science, 5555 Hermann Park Dr., Houston, TX; contact Holly Miller May New Orleans Orchid Society Show and Sale, Lakeside Shopping Center, Metairie, LA contact: Marian Prigmore SHOW UPDATE: All the invitations have been sent and we are waiting for responses. So far Baton Rouge and New Orleans have committed to 25 exhibits. We have 5 judges and one student committed for AOS and ribbon judging and six vendors. (See list below.) It seems that we will have three judging teams again this year. That means Last year's clerks and judges getting their teams we will not need a lot of clerks. If you are not selected to be a clerk and still want to do so, just pick a team and follow it around. Note to all members: stand back and let the judges get to the plants. They must see the plants in order to judge them! YOU CAN HELP! Advertising is the key to our shows. As soon as the holidays are over you ll start to see ads in the newspapers and magazines. You can all do something to help. We will have black and white flyers available at the December meeting. Please put them on every bulletin board you see. Also please spread the word through face book. Chip Lechner has created some beautiful full color flyers that will be on our face book page. The flyer at left is one of them. At the December meeting, he will give a short demo on how you can advertise our show with these flyers. Janet Olier wrote the following explanation: We are trying desperately to utilize every advertising opportunity for our show. In doing so, we would really like for everyone who is on Face book to take a moment to share anything to their personal pages that they can to help advertise our show. Our thinking is that if each person on Face book has 200 friends and 30 members share it 6000 people would see it minimum, potentially thousands more, if those friends of your friends see the page. Chip will be doing a short demo on how to share our posts and flyers on Face book. Members are encouraged to bring their smart phones, or tablets and Chip and Janet will be glad to help you learn how to do it SHOW: TROPHIES - If you have agreed to purchase a trophy from the Society, please give Jo Ann Vaz your check for$15.00 made out to GCOS at the meeting. If you are providing your own trophy please bring it to the December meeting. Put your name on the box and pack your trophy in a box with some sort of packing such as bubble wrap or lots of tissue. In past years some trophies were only placed in gift bags and they broke. We have to move these trophies around a lot, please pack them carefully. Jo Ann must have all trophies or checks no later than the December meeting; if you can t do so please let Jo Ann know. EXPLANATION OF OUR TROPHY SYSTEM: Our show schedule is divided into categories; the exhibit types and the different orchid types; Cattleya, Dendrobiums, Oncidium etc... The society used to buy these trophies and give them to the winners. Then someone got the idea to save money by letting members donate the trophies.

4 Donating a trophy in memory of someone is a good way to remember people and honor them as the donors and the honorees are listed on everything so it is seen a lot. Then we only gave out a trophy for each category of exhibit and one for each plant category best flower. But members wanted to give more trophies. To make people happy we added best grown plant to all the categories which almost doubled the number of trophies and it still wasn t enough. Members started making their own categories! It s hard to think of any more categories but we try. We give more trophies than any other show in our area. Once a member donates a trophy it is considered theirs to donate in future years until they decide they do not want to. DUES ARE DUE: Dues will be due at the January meeting. If you d like to get a head start you can mail them to Marilyn Ladnier, Village Dr., Biloxi, MS Dues are $10 for single and an additional $5.00 for each additional member living at the same address. First time members get only one free plant per address; not one per person. There is no free plant for renewals. Dues can be paid at the meeting. Please do not pay your dues to our raffle ladies at the show. NAME TAGS AND SHIRTS: If you want a GCOS name tag; see Marilyn at the meeting. If you want a GCOS shirt see Chip Lechner. The fee is $15.00 and $3.00 for your name. You supply a clean shirt. Chip has a wonderful new design a pink Paph, see pic at left! If you want a nice new orchid shirt for our January show please bring in a recently washed shirt by the December meeting.
