1 The Newsletter of the AMHERST ORCHID SOCIETY An Affiliate of the American Orchid Society All rights reserved Greater Whorled Pogonia Volume 25, Issue 12 December 2017 November Meeting 2017 The usual crowd gathered at Munson to review upcoming projects. New black cloth was being purchased and sewn together to fit the support poles. Evidently too much light was penetrating the back drop between the vendors and that row of displays. I never noticed any light penetration but I have old eyes. I just hope whoever wants this cloth helps haul it, to and fro, from the library. The pot show trophies vs. rosettes was discussed. The cheaper rosettes were compared to the $30 pots and most everyone wanted to stay with the pots to be awarded for the class champions. Two Club positions have opened up. The old problem of somebody overseeing the newsletter was solved when Liz and Troy volunteered to give it a go. The other open position was needed for a membership chair person. This involves welcoming new members and getting them acclimated to the club and trying to keep these new members interested. No one volunteered, check with President Joe if interested. Most important news of the day was the meeting date to be moved to the second Sunday of the month. This does not go into effect until treasurer Steve can ok it with Munson Library. So until further notice the December meeting will be the third Sunday. This is the pot luck Christmas party so bring something to share. Reason for the switch is a better and cheaper possibility for a speaker from the New England loop. The Cape society meets on the second Sunday and they usually grab the loop speaker. Sometimes this society doesn t pick up the speaker so with our meeting change, hope is Amherst jumps into the New England speaker loop. Years ago we always met on the second Sunday, went to the third to get away from the Cape s meeting date. This did not go as planned. The giveaway plants arrived bare root. There was a nice variety, many different from what the Club grows. The Cape show is the last weekend in January. It would be nice to see something other than cattleyas in the display. If anyone wants to help with that show let me know. Meeting end saw President Joe presenting a lively auction for three nice orchids and everybody left in a happy mood.
