3 President s Message Hi Everyone, First, I would like to wish everyone a very happy New Year 2018! I hope you were able to enjoy some good times and good company over the holidays, and you are ready to get back to your orchids again. I heard it was the coldest New Year s Day since 1899, so it is good to have some reminders of more tropical climes! Thanks to everyone who brought goodies for the pot luck table at our December meeting your contributions helped to make a really good spread once again! Thanks also for all your contributions to the raffle table items, and I think everyone was able to leave with something by the end of the draw. I picked up an interesting-looking box that turned out to be filled with a selection of AOS bulletins, some dating back over 20 years good browsing for these long, cold winter evenings! For the January meeting we will have a series of workshops on various topics and I am sure there will be something of interest to everyone. I hope to see you there. Dave Cooper 2018 Orchidophilia: Seeking Volunteers Michael Barker will have the volunteer sign-up sheets for the show at the January meeting. Please start thinking about which aspect of the show you will be best suited to help in. For new members, there are lots of areas that don't need knowledge of orchids, such as Hospitality, Admissions, Visitor Services, and Plant Hotel, to name a few. We have a request from Hospitality for someone who will buy and prepare salads for Saturday lunch. You will be reimbursed for the cost. We have a great reputation among other societies and vendors for providing excellent meals at our show, but it is a lot of work and Janet Duffield and Geraldine Hebert desperately need more help. If you can help, please sign up with your contact information. The other request is concerning members with accredited CPR and first aid training. We would like a list of these members to be available at the show and monthly meetings in case of emergencies. If you can help with this, please contact the Show Co-Chairs, Jan and Janet, at the next meeting. In closing, please support our show. We rely on it to finance club expenses, including monthly speakers, rent, our new PA system, out-of-town shows, and much more. Janet Johns Show Co-Chair 3

6 Preparing Plants for a Show Our exhibit coordinators really appreciate using your orchids to present OOS exhibits at our neighbouring shows. Please help them by preparing your plants for a show as follows: 1. Put your name on the pot, on the back or underneath. 2. Put your name and list of plants INSIDE the box and on the OUTSIDE of the box. 3. Include the parentage of hybrids, if possible. 4. Please ensure the name on the plant tag is spelled correctly. 5. Pack plants carefully so they are protected from wobbling and from the elements during transport. 6. Stake for transport and for best display, as appropriate. 7. PUT THE WHOLE BOX IN A GREEN GARBAGE BAG, labeled with your name, please. 8. Clean the foliage use water or water with a little milk. Never use plant shine products. 9. Remove any damaged/old flowers and leaves. 10. Check well for bugs! Orchid Conservation Congratulations to Marilyn Light, whose recently-published orchid conservation articles have put herself and the OOS at the forefront of conservation efforts in the orchid community. Hers was one of only two articles accepted by the Royal Horticultural Society for a special Conservation issue of Orchid Review magazine. In addition, Marilyn's experiences on conservation projects have been separately published as "Reflections on orchid conservation". Marilyn is well known for spearheading orchid conservation efforts, notably in cooperation with the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority which is responsible for the preservation of Purdon Fen and its amazing colony of Cypripedium reginae. The OOS is very fortunate to have Marilyn as an integral member of the Society. Thanks for your efforts, Marilyn! 6
