1 Central Ohio Orchid Society - REPORTER Newsletter Editor: Bill Cavanaugh, brobdingnag@prodigy.net February 2013 February Meeting Ken Mettler - Masdevallias and Draculas Thursday, February 21, :00 p.m., Franklin Park Conservatory Classrooms 7:30 to 8:00 p.m. Beginner s Corner Cold Customers and Vampirish (yes it s a word because I said so) Orchids. Our February speaker drew rave reviews when he spoke to us last year on native orchids. And as is ever the case, success breeds imitation or in this case repetition sort of. Ken Mettler, our Judging Chair, Beginner s Corner guru, Show table judge and host of the Hocking Hills native orchid walk, will be speaking on, drum roll please, Masdevallias and Draculas: The Species, Hybrids, and Culture. Ken has a wealth of knowledge regarding orchid species, comes from being a judge and certified orchid geek, and shares it in a very informative and entertaining way. Masd. Bella Donna Snow Blush HCC/AOS As we all know, Ken has been growing orchids for many years, has progressed to judging and regularly judges our show table and always exhibits interesting orchids at the show table. We are pleased to have him speak again. Unfortunately we will have to find someone else to judge the show table. While Ken is a multitalented guy, I think judging the show table might distract from his presentation. Ken will not be bringing plants for sale, so we will have a member plant sale. Bring all of those extra divisions, seedlings and accursed plants that will just not grow for you and find them a new home. Bring your wallets and an appetite for something new and/or different. Orchidom abhors a vacuum and of course, you will have to find something to fill all those empty places left by the plants you sell. We will be having our usual meet-andgreet pre-meeting dinner with the speaker this month at Aladdin's on East Main Street at 6PM. All members are welcome. Bill Cavanaugh

2 President's Message. It's time to get outside and go on a hunt for Spring. Too early? Nope. Spring doesn't wait for you to have free time to visit the Metro Parks or the Dawes Arboretum. Spring has its own schedule and never says By your leave. Spring happens whether you pay attention or not and if not, you're going to miss it. And when you do notice it you'll ask when did all this happen and how much has already come and gone? It's only February, you might say. It hasn't started yet. Maybe not. But when it starts, it goes gangbusters. Before the end of the month the sugar maples are being tapped at the arb and the sap collected to be boiled down within a couple weeks. Sometime between now and the middle of March there will be the first warm rain. Then the salamanders will leave the woods and return to the cypress swamp to mate and leave egg sacs from which their tadpoles will emerge. Already I expect snowdrops in flower and the first green shoots of crocus are now out of the ground in front of my house. I can practically pull up a chair and watch them as they open their purple flowers. The tulips are poking out also. But just whisper that. Don't want the deer to find out. Indoors my Ludisia discolor alba is flowering. It was the tiniest little twig of a Mtssa Hani plant when I bought it at our spring show last year. But that species grows like a weed. I've found that it prefers a wide, shallow pot which it will quickly fill as it sends runners out of the pot and then back over itself. Eventually the center of the pot will get sour and you'll have to break the plant apart and start the pieces anew in separate pots. Give some to friends. It's like home-grown zucchini or Amish Friendship Bread starter you'll run out of friends long before you run out of giveaways. Nevertheless I think I'll add another jewel orchid to my collection at the upcoming spring show. Speaking of which, search out Dave Markley and reassure him that the whole spring show isn't just on his shoulders, that YOU will be there to help with the many things that need doing to pull off another successful show. Because that's what spring means to us. The flora and fauna are busy, busy, busy. Growing, flowering, exhibiting. Starting now and continuing through May when the native orchids of Ohio are in bloom. If you could be involved in just one season a year, it should be spring. Tom Franczak Our membership year is January to December. If you joined the society and you paid your dues in November or December of 2012, you are covered for 2013 as well. For all of the rest of us, it is time to begin the renewal process. You can pay your dues at the February meeting, or you can send a check to our membership chair. (made payable to Central Ohio Orchid Society ) Rich Wagener (2739 Clime Road, Columbus, Ohio 43223). Please support the society by renewing as soon as possible. Your contribution enhances the society and what it is able to do for you. The dues are $20.00 for Individuals and $25.00 per household.

4 Notes from the January Meeting. Here are the results of the January showtable. The show table displayed thirty beautiful plants, another extraordinary show for a winter month and the plants shown were anywhere from beautiful to extraordinary. Great January show table and a large thank you to all of you who bring and share your delightful blooms. Ken Mettler and Tennis Maynard did the judging and as usual did well. Where the judges thought it appropriate additional place awards were made. As always, we encourage you to bring your blooming plants to the show table and share your skills and the beauty of your plants with your fellow members. We continue to need a little assistance from the membership to facilitate the show table results and the contest tally. Would you please print your name and the name of the plant clearly! It is really hard if someone has to guess at the name of the plant or of the exhibitor. It makes life a little easier if you include all of the info in an easily readable form. Thanks. Props to Katrina Heap for the plant of the month, a really well grown and bloomed Brassavola Little Stars. Awesome. 7 Annual Growers Contest And they re off. The race is on and to the victor belong the spoils. We won t decide what the spoils are until later in the year but that should not stop you from striving for them. Remember, the race goes to those that grow and show the most orchids, or at least the most awarded orchids. Exhibit your skills. With a little luck, and the cooperation of those ever so unpredictable orchids that we all grow, and dogged persistence, you too can be right up there. The results below include the November and January show table. We will add meetings and away shows as they happen at least that is the plan. If you have any disagreements with the totals let me know as soon as possible so that it can be set straight. If you are the grower of a plant with no name, my regards to the similarly named song, let me know and I will award you the points, or at least count them as you have already earned them. I have actually managed to get this thing out six days before the meeting. That is a 300% improvement over two days before the meeting and progress is progress. Still shooting for getting back to the 5 th of the month or so. Aim is still a little low but getting better. So, we are past the holidays and into the spring show season. Ours will be here all too soon but in the meantime, we have a number of shows within an easy afternoons drive. We can jump in the car and in just a little time, we can be ogling the beautiful blooms at our sister societies shows. And if we can, we should go. Societies all around us, and even us to an extent, are struggling to hold shows and get to away shows. Supporting each other is an integral part of the whole structure. We don t engage in a contact sport here but participation is important. If we are all passive participants, we soon find that there is nothing to passively participate in. You have to be actively engaged in your society and your hobby/avocation to squeeze the maximum enjoyment from the beast. And, while I don t expect to see full contact orchid growing any time soon it might be interesting. Participate, both here and there. Have fun. I plan on doing just that until life gets in the way. Oh well, do your best. I will do mine and shoot for 10 days before the meeting next month. May your orchids live long, may you live longer. Bill

9 Hospitality We would like to express our great gratitude and heart felt gastronomic gratitude to all of you who brought the delightful array of dishes, sides and desserts to the Awards Banquet. As is ever the case, much like your orchid growing taste, the variety and quality was superb. We would like to offer the usual huge thank you, in advance, to all of you who have signed up to provide snacks and goodies for the upcoming meetings, volunteers are listed below. For the future, as ever, the months with a red volunteer needed notice, need a volunteer. I am sure you would make Dave and Edna Markley, our hospitality chairs, breathe easier if they could start getting volunteers for the remainder of this year. Remember, if each member brings something to one meeting, you only have to do it once every four or five years. Step to the plate and give Dave and Edna the month you will participate. Thanks. David and Edna Markley are our mavens of hospitality. So, for those of you who just can t wait to participate, please give the Markley s a call or sign up at the next meeting. Let them know you would like to add your name to the merriment roster. If you have to cancel try to get a person from the following month to switch or ring David or Edna to change months.
