1 S P I K E Newsletter of the E Ottawa Orchid Society OCTOBER 2017 manon.garrett@gmail.com Past President johnjns@sympatico.ca Secretary Karina Isert k.c.isert@gmail.com André Couture andrec.couture@sympatico.ca johnjns@sympatico.ca Jan Johns janet.johns@sympatico.ca aurora.richard@gmail.com October Program: This month, the Society is hosting Inge and Peter Poot. Inge will be discussing a lesser-known genus: Coryanthes. Inge Poot has loved and recognized orchids since she was a small child admiring the wild orchids in her native Austria. She earned a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1962 and taught Mathematics and Science at Bayview Secondary School in Thornhill, Ontario, from 1962 to She completed an M.Sc. in mycology (the study of fungi) at the U of T in 1973 and then worked at Richters Herbs from 1981 to Inge has been a member of the Southern Ontario Orchid Society from 1964 to the present. She was a member of the Executive and with her husband she has held the positions of Librarian, Show Chair and President during that time. She and her husband have been growing orchids since their honeymoon in December 1962 and now have 1,000-2,000 orchids scattered all over their swampy-smelling house and attached greenhouse. They grow a diverse selection of genera, but the one they have the most examples of is Stanhopea. haydonm@rogers.com Joyce Medcalf jmedcalf@1000island.net Check out our website: Currently Vacant

2 President s Message Hi Everyone, I hope you were able to come to the September meeting and that you enjoyed the talk on Cattleya hybridizing at Suwada Orchids in Tokyo. Lots of interesting information and it really showed how much patience is required to develop a new hybrid, with at least a seven-year wait for each plant to flower! Thanks again to our speaker, Munekazu Ejiri, for making the long trip from Japan. This month we will have a talk entitled Coryanthes, the bucket orchid given by Peter and Inge Poot from the Southern Ontario Orchid Society (SOOS). As many of you know, Peter and Inge are AOS judges and they have been attending our annual shows for many years. I am sure this will be an excellent talk on these rather unusual orchids, and I am looking forward to it. Welcome to our new members and I hope you enjoy the meetings and other activities, and welcome back to our long-standing members. YOUR WORDS Dave Cooper This is a new feature in Spike in which a question will be posed and your responses will be published in the next issue. Last month s question: What is your favourite, most loved orchid in your collection? This month s question: Describe the first time you won an award for an orchid. Please respond to either question by month s end and include a photo showing your orchid in all its glory so others can ooh and aah. In This Issue President s Message 2 Your Words 2 Members Corner 2 Orchid Calendar 3 Montreal Judging Centre 4 COOS Show Awards 5 OOS September Meeting 9 OOS Show Table Results 10 Best in Show and Member s Choice 20 Upcoming AOS Webinars 21 Correction 21 MEMBERS CORNER Please welcome the new members who have joined since August 2017: Tina & Dave Askwith Gaston Filion Nicole Charron Marilyn Dykstra Sheila & Malcolm Hanson Pamela McLennan Peggy Wright 2

5 OTTAWA ORCHID SOCIETY AWARDS AT THE CENTRAL ONTARIO ORCHID SOCIETY SHOW (SEPT 24-25) Jean Hollebone took plants to the COOS show in September from OOS growers. The COOS show was a nice, small show with high quality plants. Thanks to those who contributed plants, and congratulations to the winners. The ribbons for OOS growers are listed below. Of special note, Angèle Biljan won Best Specimen Plant in Show, with a prestigious score of 84, and was granted a Certificate of Horticultural Merit, which means she is allowed to add a clonal name to her plant. She has chosen to name it after her daughter, so the plant will be called Barbosella cogniauxiana Christine Biljan. The next step in the awards process is sending the plant to the Species Identification Task Force for confirmation of its species by the taxonomic experts. Last year, this same plant won a first in its class, so it is interesting to see the difference a year makes in growth and presentation of flowers. Congratulations, Angèle! Also of note, new member Nataxja Cini won a third for her cream and fuchsia Phalaenopsis No Name Harlequin in this her first entry in a show. Congratulations, Nataxja, and congratulations to all our winners. (Pictures of individual entries by Jean Hollebone) Photo 1 5
