PAGE 4 Director s Corner Glen As I peruse the July and August calendars at the Chapter, District, and Region levels, there are so many great rides, events, and rallies scheduled across our Region that it would be almost impossible to hit them all. Starting on July the 15 th, Ride Coordinator Gary has us scheduled to ride to Trudy s diner in Idaho City for our annual Breakfast Ride. Following that is the Idaho District Rally in Salmon from July 26 (travel day) through the 29 th. Your District Staff has put a lot of time and effort into planning for this rally which means it s going to be FUN. I hope that while you are there, you will take advantage of the rider training opportunities that will be available or even volunteer to help when possible. The more you become involved, the more new friends you will make, and the more you ll get out of your GWRRA membership. You might even surprise yourself at how much FUN you will end up having! The Region I Rally in Tillamook, OR will take place from August 16 (travel day) through the 19th. They also have some exciting adventures planned that cannot be duplicated anywhere else in the country. Check out the Region s website for more details. And if you haven t registered yet, it isn t too late. And finally, there is Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, Texas celebrating 40 years of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. WOW, is that ever going to be an experience for us! It promises to put a whole new face on the concept of volunteering for your Region I Couple of the Year. I hope you ll join us for one, two, or all three of these big summer events. They will no doubt be memorable! Glen Goff Chapter Director I m not sure what I have gotten myself into with this contract, but I m still looking for the fine print. Richard Paul Evans: The Mistletoe Promise

PAGE 5 Gary Ride Coordinator Ramblings So many roads, so little time And then it was June and we kicked it off quickly with our June 2 Dinner Ride to Adrian, OR. At one time it looked like there would be 19 of us, but a variety of situations reduced the group to 14. Those of us who attended seemed to have a great time enjoying the tasty Friday night special, prime rib. The Mirage is small and the special is popular, so we gathered early to beat the rush. It was this writer s first time, and the anticipation was met. On June 10, Jerry, Tim, Cliff and Glen made the scheduled ride to Lowman for lunch at the South Fork Lodge. Glen reported the ride up there was rain free, the lunch was great, and then the rain came. They waited a few minutes, but the rain persisted so the group headed back through Garden Valley and out of the rain by Horseshoe Bend. A soggy trip, but Glen said he was dried out by the time he got home! Then it was Parma, Payette, Emmett and Horseshoe Bend on the June 24. Eleven of us made this ride, and it was a wonderful day of roads and fellowship. We stopped in Ontario for coffee then took OR 201 north to OR 52 for a right turn into Payette. (We avoided Weiser since the Old Time Fiddlers got there first this time some of you went there I hope you had a fiddlin good time ). From Payette we went to New Plymouth, a town we usually bypass but it has an interesting history and a unique street layout which we tried to experience a little. Next, on to Tom s Cabin near Emmett for a good lunch before heading east along the Payette River to Horseshoe Bend and south on 55 heading home. A good time was had by all. What a great month of riding and enjoying the company of good friends, and getting to know each other better. Next month we get to go to Idaho City for breakfast on July 15 th, and the Idaho Rally in Salmon July ganother blatant sales pitch, but Salmon is a great odestination for the Rally. Hope you all can make it. The otrip there is beautiful and motorcycle worthy, no matter d which of the four or five routes you choose, and the Salmon River valley is surrounded by scenic mountains. Some of you have already registered, more of you still should. Remember -- Always ride within your skills and avoid distractions. Gary Evans Ride Coordinator Gary & Maxeen One s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things. Henry Miller

PAGE 7 Rider Education and Safety Bubba The happy-motorcyclist, wind-in-your-face, bugs-in-your-teeth thing sounds great on paper, but by the time you can identify the particular species of insect parts in your toothbrush, a windshield starts to sound pretty swell. But whether it s a see-through barn door sparing your face and eyes from flying debris or a stubby sport screen you crouch behind on a track day, if you can t see through it, a scratched or dirty windshield can be worse than no screen at all. Here s how to avoid trading wind-in-your-face for crash-in-the-weeds. Start with the right cleaning products. Never use any cleaner on acrylic or polycarbonate windshields that s not designed specifically for the application. The alcohol or ammonia in common window washing fluid can damage the plastic and chew through the scratchresistant hard-coating. The milder the better is the rule here. If you can t find an approved cleaner, mild soap and warm water will do. Your cleaning supplies should be squeaky clean right from the get-go. No paper towels they can scratch the plastic no shop rags, not even new ones, and never use that filthy squeegee in the tank full of pond water attached to the gas pump. Get a cleaning cloth made of terrycloth, cotton flannel, or microfiber, turn it often as you clean, and run it through the washing machine frequently. Park the bike in the shade so the windshield is cool before you start. The cleaner will work better, it ll dry more slowly, and it s easier to see scratches and dirt in soft light than in bright sunlight. Using plenty of clean water, rinse off as much dirt as gently as you can; the biggest risk of scratching is when the windshield is dirtiest. Remove welded-on bug carcasses by laying a wet cloth or wet paper towel flat on the windshield. Give the water a while to loosen the worst of the goo then pull the towel off without wiping across the surface, then get after what s left with your fingernail. Dry the windshield by dabbing the water with a clean towel and apply the cleaner according to the directions on the container. Use too much and you ll make a gooey mess; use too little and you risk scratching the plastic. It doesn t matter much if you use a circular motion or up-and-down motion as long as you don t press too hard. Turn the cloth frequently so the side facing the windshield is always clean. Stop and pick out any big bits the cloth picks up. The last step is applying a plastic protectant, essentially a see-through version of the wax you use on your paint. It does the same thing, too, by providing a layer of protection against future dirt accumulation and insect impacts. Most aerosol plastic cleaners like Plexus and Meguiar s are also polishes and protectants. A note of warning about rain treatments: Just about every windshield manufacturer warns against using Rain-X for glass, a popular treatment that makes water stream off car windshields in wet weather. Instead use a product such as RainZip from National Cycle or Rain-X now makes a cleaner for plastic that s recommended for motorcycle windshields. You can remove existing scratches with products like Novus or Meguiar s M17 Clear Plastic Cleaner (and M10 Clear Plastic Polish). Take it slow to avoid going too far too fast, and don t use one that s too gritty or you ll cloud the area around the scratch. The large, milky-white areas that won t polish out are typically caused by tiny internal cracks in the material itself called crazing caused by chemical contamination or stress resulting from improper mounting of the windshield. Small cracks can be temporarily stopped by drilling a tiny hole at each end, but by this time the structural strength of the material is compromised enough that you should replace the windshield. Dwayne Ellison Chapter Educator Edited from Motorcyclist It doesn t matter how many resources you have If you don t know how to use them it will never be enough. Saved from twitter.com

Food, fun, rides, entertainment, training, shopping, eating What more could you ask for from the great state of Texas? Recent write-ups in Wing World suggest that there will be quite an agenda BBQ, Disco Ball, talent contest -- lots of interesting and FUN things are being planned. Check things out! And don t forget about volunteering! Yes, it s a l-o-n-g trip for many of us, but a showing from Idaho and Region I would sure be great! If you haven t registered or made your reservations, you might want to get started as the time to do so is shorter than you think! Seek adventure. Tumblr PAGE 8

PAGE 9 Region I Couple of the Year Updates Glen & Joey Goff Our June Couple of the Year Zoom call was very productive, only two more to go before heading to Texas. As we draw closer to the Wing Ding timeframe, we will be working even more closely with our team of couples and the Coordinators. We now know that we will be housed at the Gaylord which certainly delights us! It will be easier and far less stressful for us to get to our designated venues on time. The Gaylord is not small -- it looks more like the Mall of America, so good walking shoes will be a must! Our week is currently being planned, and we will soon have a tentative schedule of our final responsibilities during Wing Ding week. We do not yet know when we might have an opportunity to just relax and be among friends but we do know that we will be very busy. What we know for sure is the following: On Monday afternoon August 28, we will be touring the interview stage and will then adjourn for a casual dinner of 28 afterwards with our COY Coordinators/Assistant Membership Enhancement Directors, Ron & Bev Clark who are extraordinary, and the Membership Enhancement Directors, Larry & Penny Anthony. There could be other Directors as well and maybe even Anita & JR Alkire! We will draw for interview placement and exchange gifts. We will begin our interviews starting bright and early on Tuesday the 29th with subsequent selection and awards by the end of the (long) day. I guess we ll be packing lots of peanut butter crackers, Cliff Bars, Hot Tamales, and water! Our resumes have been submitted to the Coordinators and will be presented to the judges on July 16 along with the rest of the couples. The first four couples short bios were featured in last month s Wing World, and lo and behold, we showed up this month! There s not much one can say in 250 words or less that might make an impression. Although we are in the company of some very accomplished individuals, your 2017 Region I Couple of the Year also has much to offer, some great successes, and that our involvement in this process is not just for the experience. This selection comes with tremendous responsibility and commitment but does provide an opportunity to interact with thousands of GWRRA members on a broader level as well as offering countless opportunities for fun! We understand how critical it is to the future of the organization to select an International Couple of the Year that espouses all the GWRRA standards. We believe that we, too, have brought something special to the organization that is worth considering, and we could very well be that selected couple as easily as any of the other couples. (And fortunately, there is no swimsuit competition!) Considering that our odds are only 8:1, those odds are better than horse racing LOL! Hold that thought! A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on. John F Kennedy

PAGE 10 Membership Enhancement Joey MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS REWARDS I am borrowing the above trademark for a few minutes to make a point. We spent many of our weekends while living in Utah taking drives and exploring the diverse geography of the state. One weekend we decided to drive to a ghost town in Juab County called Chicken Creek, 14 miles south of Nephi, elevation 6200 feet, in the Manti-La Sal National Forest. Naturally, a 4-wheel drive was required and at the time, we had a Blazer. Driving on mountain roads during the summer, one can encounter sudden fierce rainstorms that don t last long but their effects can be deadly if you are caught on the wrong side of one. And we were. Suddenly our dirt road turned to mud that was as slick as oil on glass, and we began sliding all over the narrow road. The more altitude we tried to gain to get ahead of the rain, the more difficult it became for Glen to keep the truck on the road. Of course, there were no guard rails and more than a 1500 ft drop-off on the right. As I became increasingly anxious, I yelled at Glen to let me and cousin Heidi out of the truck. Glen slid and maneuvered to a short stop, we quickly hopped out, and then I insisted that he give me my purse. Like most reasonable men, Glen grimaced and remarked that he was more concerned about our safety rather than the safety of my purse! And besides, he continued, there isn t a store around for 75 miles! I quickly explained to him that It has my American Express card in it and I would need my card if anything happened I knew my card benefits. I got my purse, got out of Glen s way, and headed down the muddy, slippery road in bare feet. Glen carefully backed the Blazer safely down by hugging the side of the mountain with his left tires in the ditch along the mountainside. A few superficial scratches from the scrub oaks on the driver s side, but we all emerged unscathed but quite muddy. And my American Express card was safe in case of need! YOU should never leave home without understanding what your GWRRA membership benefits can provide in a time of need: Wing World, Rescue and Rescue Plus, Gold Book Service Directory, Hotel and Travel Discounts just to name a few. The benefits that are related to road travel, especially during riding season, are the most significant ones to become familiar with. Many riders this season have already encountered the need to use some of these benefits, including a couple in our own Chapter. Be sure you know your benefits well, carry some of these items with you just like your first aid kit, and don t leave home without packing along anything else you think you might need should you encounter any unforeseen situations. You never know if it will be you or some new friend you have just met who will need those benefits. And take some time to reacquaint yourself with all the other benefits of Membership: Rider Education, Leadership Training, Chapter Life, Costco Discounts, etc. Every time I visit the website I seem to find something new. Take another look -- there may be something new that will be of benefit to you too. 12 PAGE 12 Happy Birthday America! July 4th is America s 241st Independence Day. Please take a few moments to celebrate our American Dream. It s more than just another day off, barbeques, picnics, camping, or fireworks. Here in Idaho, our liberties are unparalleled: wide open country in which to ride or wander at will; spectacular scenery to enjoy within our diverse geographical areas; our National Monuments and National Recreational Areas; and of course, a myriad of other cultural and recreational opportunities. The United States of America is a great country. Citizen leaders built this country, and here, freedom is defined by our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution -- We the People -- and it is defended every day by those who serve in our Armed Forces. Please remember to thank the service men and women you may encounter over the holiday for their service. They are proud to serve and your acknowledgement is always appreciated. Someone s New Ride!! What else we ve been up to Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Helen Keller

PAGE 13 Some Closing Thoughts Joey Wow, another month has literally raced past us and we are now in full blown July, complete with its oppressive heat. Hope you are staying COOL! July is also a very busy month with vacations, road trips, camping trips, and of course the Idaho District Rally at the end of the month. Some of us are going to need a vacation to rest from vacation! I would first like to thank those who wished me well during my knee surgery and recovery. It has been more of an experience than I anticipated and things have not gone as well as planned, but I guess they never do! Your thoughts, s, and phone calls have been much appreciated. A gentle reminder, do try to alert us if you know of a member with a family loss or illness. We try our best to acknowledge these events, but we need your assistance. We want to assure that no one is forgotten. As the summer progresses, let s have your ideas for a Fall Fling. I would like to get back to the Orchard House, but we will have to get there before the weather forces their patio to close as this is the only way they can accommodate our large group. Always keep your eyes and ears open for new ideas for adventure. Thanks to all who donated so generously to the brown bags and baskets for this year s District and Region Rallies. You are an incredibly kind and generous group, and your donations far exceed expectations again! I m grateful that we didn t have to collect on the same par as last year (or I would be in the looney bin!), but we certainly have a wide variety of items that will be included in baskets for auction with the odds and ends going to brown bags. This time before we let go of the baskets, we will be sure to get some good pictures of them so that you can see how your investment turned out! They will be fun and you will be surprised. I sure appreciate receiving your pictures for the Newsletter, so keep it up! We can really have some fun with them. And I am always open for any suggestions you may have. In closing, hope you had a safe and memorable July 4th holiday, and until next time, Keep smiling! Joey Goff Newsletter Editor See you soon!
