4 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2018 PAGE 4 Director s Corner Glen We closed out 2017 with another good riding year and a great Christmas Party. Thanks to all who came and took part in the merriment. In addition, I think you are all aware by now that Joey and I have taken on some additional responsibilities with the Idaho District as well as continuing with our Chapter responsibilities. We feel fortunate to have great Teams at both the Chapter and District levels. This should be an interesting and challenging year for us! And now 2018 is already starting out to be downright exciting for Chapter T. We had our annual Polar Bear Ride on New Year s Day although winter weather conditions did not allow any two or three-wheeling. Some of us attended our annual Lunch & a Movie at the Village Cinema recently, and we have our Valentine s breakfast next month. Who knows, maybe we can even sneak in a January ride before then? Let s hope that we don t get too much more snow and ice in the coming weeks so that we can get a head start on the riding season! Our tentative 2018 Ride Calendar is published in this month s Newsletter. I can tell you that the Ride calendar put together by Gary Collins, our new Ride Coordinator, may be the most ambitious that Chapter T has ever had, and I for one am chomping at the bit to get started. Although reorganization has eliminated the Rider Educator at the Chapter level, Gary will also focus on safety and make safe riding a part of his monthly newsletter input. Add to that the introduction of the new 2018 Honda Goldwing touring bike that many folks are eagerly awaiting to throw a leg over when it arrives at the Honda dealerships in February or March. I understand that Anita Alkire and selected members from the Home Office staff recently had an opportunity to actually ride the new bikes in Austin, Texas. Their impressions of these bikes should show up in the March edition of Wing World. Based upon the enthusiastic comments they made as well as some of the U-Tube reviews, it sounds as if this new Gold Wing may just turn out to be one of the best touring motorcycles ever been built. It also has the potential to help grow our membership. Don t forget to reserve your spot on the Rotating Chapter Gathering Leader calendar. We have had such fun with this in the past and all who have participated have done a great job. We really enjoy seeing different faces and personalities each month. Yes, this is my last report as your Ride Coordinator as I take on the Assistant Chapter Director position for I look forward to following another Gary Gary Collins next year and all the exciting places and trips he is putting together for us. What a great year it has been, for Maxeen and I anyway. We have truly enjoyed the rides we were able to participate in, and especially the company of those we were privileged to ride and fellowship with. Wow Swan Falls Dam with an Owyhee Mountains backdrop, Shoshone Falls and Twin Falls with great spring runoff, Owyhee Dam and Reservoir and its flowing Glory Hole, Bruneau Dunes with Chapter G from Twin Falls, Lowman Loop is always good, New Plymouth and its interesting street layout, the Idaho District Rally in Salmon (thanks Bill Lea for this great event), breakfast at Trudy s in Idaho City, New Meadows and McCall loop, Soldier Mountain and old US 30, Stanley trip led by Glen, Owyhee Reservoir reprise, and all the other impromptus completed SAFELY and always fun lunch stops. Just reading this list brings back such incredible memories. There were 33 members and 4 guests that rode with us. We completed 33,500 participant miles. We enjoyed 17 rides and Glen Goff earned a First Place Rider Trophy with 14 rides and 2,600 miles. Bubba Ellison was Second with 12 rides and 2,265 miles. Maxeen Evans earned the First Place Co-Rider Trophy with 10 rides and 2,145 miles. Donna Monnier was Second with 7 rides and 1,405 miles. Congratulations to these riders. Maxeen and I will continue to be around in 2018 and we express our sincere appreciation for being named Couple of the Year. That was our big surprise at the Christmas Party. We are truly humbled by this recognition, because it took all of you to make our year worthy of this honor. Now, remember, don t divide your attention too thin, as you enjoy the road, and always watch for those drivers that have (divided theirs too thin). 6 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2018 PAGE 6 Ride Coordinator Ramblings Even though we are still in the midst of winter here in Idaho, the mild weather during December and January has had many of us itching to get out and ride! With the proper planning and warmer winter gear, we can enjoy the 12-month riding season offered here in southwestern Idaho. Although rides may be shorter and only cover familiar territory, the couple hour rides during the winter months can help us maintain the skills necessary for fun and safe rides throughout the year. Whether you are taking those occasional rides during these colder months or leaving your bikes on the battery tender while waiting for warmer weather, now would be a good time to perform a preseason inspection to ensure any necessary maintenance is compete before other problems develop. Check tires for proper air pressure; tread depth and cracks or cuts in sidewalls, replace as needed. Check battery cell fluid if accessible. If not using battery tender during winter months, ensure that battery has a full charge before getting out on the road. Check air filters and replace as needed. Change oil if needed and top off fluid levels including brake fluid, oil, and final drive gears. Preseason is a great time to examine brake pads and replace them if worn below wear indicators. It only takes a few minutes to check that your signal lights, brake lights, and headlights work. These lights communicate your moves on the road to other drivers and elp you stay safe on the road. Follow manufacturer s maintenance recommendations to ensure your bike is safe and ready to ride. As you can see from the attached Tentative 2018 Ride Schedule, our first planned Chapter rides will not occur until mid-march, and our first 260 mile ride is scheduled for mid-april when we venture out to Shoshone Falls. 12 JANUARY- FEBRUARY 2018 PAGE 12 Membership Enhancement Joey First, congratulations to our 2018 Chapter Couple of the Year, Gary and Maxeen Evans! They have been a great support to the Chapter and to the District, and we look forward to working with them closely this coming year. Part of my job as Membership Enhancement Coordinator is to make calls on behalf of GWRRA. I get a list of new and prospective members that I call to welcome them and invite them to our Chapter Gathering. I also get a list of members whose membership is up for renewal that I am supposed to call to remind them to renew and to make sure they have current information about the Chapter and we have their current contact information. Finally I get a list of people whose membership has expired that I am supposed to contact one last time to make sure they are leaving us intentionally. At times it is difficult to call people. I often find that people use their answering machine as a screening device. Sometimes I have had my calls returned after leaving a message. I enjoy talking to new members, and I always invite them to join us for a Gathering or a ride and get to know us. New changes in Membership Enhancement beginning this year will be shared in the future. The new Team GWRRA is below. Glen & Joey We want to thank everyone in Chapter T for the amazing gift that was presented to us at the January Chapter Gathering. We were certainly taken by surprise, and are touched and overwhelmed by your thoughtfulness and generosity. You can bet that we will enjoy the minivacation that you planned for us in McCall. We have always believed in our Chapter Members, and you never fail to impress us! Together we have achieved the unimaginable, the consequences of having fun. Those consequences gave us the honor and privilege to represent not only Chapter T, but the Idaho District and our 5-state Region I at Wing Ding 39 this past year. You were instrumental in realizing that success, even though at times we struggled to validate our own achievements. And hey, we did take home Third Place in the Krazy Hat Competition at Wing Ding!! Again, we thank you humbly for such tremendous support, recognition, and for the generous gift. Though we now have a wall full of awards, nothing means more to us than the best gift of all that of your friendship. THANK YOU! Glen & Joey Goff Chapter Directors It seems as though this year s winter warm weather is just as peculiar as last year s was cold. I chuckle to myself as I walk around the yard looking for buds on trees and shrubs or other indicators of an early Spring. Why not an early Spring? Everything else seems early this year: Ash Wednesday on Valentine s Day, Easter Sunday on April Fool s Day. Go figure! Now that the pressure of all the rallies and Wing Ding is behind us, we can focus our attention on our vigorous 2018 riding schedule. Please take the time to review it and mark your calendars. Watch for the Super Blue Blood Moon that happens on January 31st (Wednesday). This is the first time in over 100 years that there has been a Blue Moon and a total eclipse of the moon at the same time. It is speculated that the moon will appear up to 30% larger than normal and will have spectacular red and orange colors. Be an early riser! I guess you all know by now that Honda has a newly designed Goldwing debuting in the next couple of months. So I thought, what was your first bike? I am looking for your first bike (or close) pictures and at the end of the year I would like to post them all side by side with what you ride now. Should be interesting! I have already received 1-1/2 entries, the half a slide that has to get printed first. Speaking of bikes, Bill Dohrmann s 1500 is for sale, posted on Craig s List if you know anyone who is interested. Finally, I would ask that you continue to remember John & Denise Scholl in your thoughts and prayers as they continue with their challenging journey.
