BE AN H 2 O HERO S M A L L A C T I O N S F O R B I G I M P A C T THE HURON RIVER WATERSHED 2018 COMMUNITY CALENDAR

MAKE A DIFFERENCE. B E AN H2 O H E R O! Clean water makes so many things possible. Healthy ecosystems. Plentiful wildlife. Clean, safe drinking water. Inviting places to swim, fish, paddle or simply enjoy nature. Vibrant towns and cities. A legacy for future generations. It s our hope that, with this year s Huron River watershed calendar as your guide, you ll choose to become an H2O Hero and take the small daily actions that collectively result in a healthier watershed and river. THE CHALLENGE Today, most of the pollution entering our rivers, streams and lakes is carried by rainwater that runs off hard surfaces such as roads, parking lots and rooftops. Pollutants include dirt, motor oil and toxic auto fluids, pesticides, fertilizer and bacteria from pet waste and failing septic systems. We depend on our built infrastructure storm drains, drainage ditches and culverts to keep water away from our homes and prevent streets from flooding. But those same systems also direct polluted and untreated rainwater straight into our smaller local waterways, which flow into the Huron River and ultimately to Lake Erie. WHAT YOU CAN DO Fortunately, there are simple daily actions you can take to help prevent water pollution. And many of them are in this calendar. Each month features an H2O Hero along with tips on everything from mulching, choosing fertilizers and disposing of pet waste to rain gardens, the benefits of native plants, and capturing runoff with trees. We hope you ll be inspired to try them all. Get your hero on! Start today.

MAKING A BIGGER IMPACT, TOGETHER Through individual actions, H2O Heroes can make a major difference in the health of our waterways. For instance, you can: Adopt a storm drain Take the initiative to keep your neighborhood storm drains clean and free-flowing. Or organize a group effort to help clear debris and install No Dumping Drains to River markers. For details on Huron River watershed stormdrain programs, visit hrwc.org. Volunteer with the Huron River Watershed Council HRWC organizes group stream monitoring and river cleanup events throughout the year. In the winter, spring and fall months, teams of volunteers collect and count benthic macro-invertebrates (river bugs) to help assess water system health. These are followed by indoor group sessions to identify the species of river bugs found. No experience necessary! Get involved in other ways Additional volunteer opportunities include: Measuring and mapping a stream Testing for water quality and flow Assessing natural areas throughout the watershed Working at community events as an outreach ambassador hrwc.org 2018 VOLUNTEER EVENTS Jan 20 Stonefly Search Mar 24 Water Quality Monitoring Training Apr 21 River Roundup Apr 29 Bug ID Day Jun 23 Water Quality Monitoring Training Aug 18 River Cleanup Sept 29 River Roundup Oct 14 Bug ID Day Check out hrwc.org for more 2018 opportunities and dates. H2O HEROES AT PLAY! The Huron River Water Trail is a 104-mile (167 km) inland paddling trail designated as the 18th trail of the National Water Trail System that connects people to the river and its history. Paddlers can stop at five Trail Towns along the way Milford, Dexter, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Flat Rock. Visit huronriverwatertrail.org for interactive maps and recommended trips with distances and float times. You ll also find information on how to purchase The Paddler s Companion a trip-ready, waterproof flip book that includes 28 maps along with detailed visitor information on each of the five Trail Towns. huronriverwatertrail.org

THE HURON RIVER WATERSHED The Huron River Watershed is made up of all the land, creeks and streams that drain into the Huron River. That includes lakes, wetlands, groundwater and your neighborhood. The Huron River Watershed is part of the much larger Lake Erie Watershed. The map below shows the boundaries of both the Huron River Watershed and the smaller creeksheds that feed into the river. 9 PINCKNEY RECREATION AREA, JOHN LLOYD 10 HIDDEN LIVINGSTON TURTLE BRIGADE, BELL ROAD, COUNTY LAKE,* MARC AKEMANN MARC AKEMANN LIVINGSTON 4 HUDSON MILLS RAPIDS, KEITH MATZ South Or 3 * exact location undisclosed 5 5 KENSINGTON METROPARK, KEITH MATZ verine Lake 12 WHITMORE LAKE REFLECTION, KEITH MATZ OAKLAND Orchard Lake O illage Vi GHAM St

JANUARY 2018 BLUE RIBBON RIVER, DEXTER JILL LOVE When I first spotted this scene on the Huron River near the Dexter Cider Mill, there were heavy clouds and three feet of snow on the bridge. Later, during my Jazzercise class, the sun burst into the room. I left immediately, drove like a maniac, and fought my way through the snow in tennis shoes to capture this image.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY 31 New Year s Day Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Huron River Watershed Council Stonefly Search hrwc.org Groundhog Day World Wetlands Day BE AN H2O HERO Use smart fixtures for smart fixes Every day, an average family uses nearly 40 gallons of water just for showering. That accounts for 17 percent of all residential indoor water use! Choose a showerhead with a WaterSense label and you ll save 2,900 gallons of water per year and enough electricity to power a house for 13 days! JANUARY Jeremy, Aubrey, Penelope and Arthur L. participate in the Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner s River Safe Homes program. They ve learned that lots of simple actions at home protect water quality. Learn more at ewashtenaw.org/riversafe 2018

FEBRUARY 2018 YPSILANTI FOOTBRIDGE KEITH MATZ One snowy Saturday morning, I drove to the Firehouse Museum for a special-access photo shoot only to discover it was the wrong day. Instead, I wandered around the area making photos of the beautiful buildings, bridges, and natural scenes along the Huron River.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Groundhog Day 2 3 World Wetlands Day Lincoln s Birthday Ash Wednesday Chinese New Year Valentine s Day 18 President s Day BE AN H2O HERO Walk the talk volunteer! Huron River Watershed Council volunteers gather essential data for restoration and protection efforts by testing water quality, collecting river bugs, mapping streams and hiking and assessing natural areas that benefit the river. As a volunteer, you can also clean up trash, pull weeds in a rain garden, work a special event, or label neighborhood storm drains. Sign up at: hrwc.org. Nicole N. participated in the Huron River Watershed Council s summer internship program. She enjoys kayaking the Huron s Natural River Zone. FEBRUARY 2018

MARCH 2018 HIDDEN LIVINGSTON COUNTY LAKE MARC AKEMANN Discovered by chance while on an aerial shoot of the Whitmore Lake area, this small water body known as a kettle lake was most likely carved out by receding glaciers. The green plant along its perimeter is Water-Willow, otherwise known as Justicia americana.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Daylight Savings Time begins St. Patrick s Day Vernal Equinox World Water Day Huron River 24 Watershed Council Water Quality Monitoring Training hrwc.org Palm Sunday Good Friday Passover begins BE AN H2O HERO Pick up after your pets Left on sidewalks or lawns, pet waste washes directly into storm drains and enters our local waterways in the form of raw, unfiltered sewage. Do your part as a pet owner by scooping, bagging and trashing. It makes for better water quality as well as cleaner sidewalks and happier neighbors. Christine K. volunteers for the Huron River Watershed Council. A graduate of U-M s School of Natural Resources and Environment, her goal is to become a top water researcher. As a leader in HRWC s Water Quality Monitoring Program, Christine teaches other volunteers to collect water samples safely and accurately. MARCH 2018

APRIL 2018 HUDSON MILLS RAPIDS KEITH MATZ This photo was made on a beautiful late summer morning at one of my favorite spots in Hudson Mills Metropark. The clear water is low, exposing the rocks to create a compelling foreground.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Easter Sunday April Fool s Day Passover ends Tax Day Huron River Watershed Council 21 River Roundup hrwc.org Earth Day Huron River Cinco de Mayo 5 Watershed Council Bug ID Day hrwc.org BE AN H2O HERO Treasure your trees The leaves and bark of a tree retain a surprising amount of water allowing some to evaporate and some to reach the ground more slowly. Depending on the size and species, a single tree can store 100 gallons or more. This redistribution of water can be significant. In fact, it s been estimated that an urban forest can reduce annual runoff by up to 7 percent. Calculate your tree s impact here: treebenefits.com Brother and sister Foster and Ally L. volunteer regularly for River Roundup. During these group hunts, they search for river bugs that are sensitive to changes in water quality and habitat. The resulting information helps watershed communities identify problems and make informed decisions on how best to protect the river. APRIL 2018

MAY 2018 KENSINGTON METROPARK KEITH MATZ This photo was made at Kensington Metropark on a late August morning. I was struck with the beauty of the Joe Pye Weed in the early morning light, when suddenly the Tiger Swallowtail butterfly wandered into my photo.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY 29 Passover begins 30 May is American Cinco de Mayo 5 Wetlands Month Mother s Day Ramadan begins Memorial Day BE AN H2O HERO Use the power of plants If you garden, make a point of including plants that are native to Michigan, such as Joe Pye Weed. Deep-rooted Michigan native plants are not only beautiful, they also trap and filter polluted runoff from roadsides and rooftops. And you may be able to use fewer pesticides and less water to keep them healthy. Learn more at: ewashtenaw.org/raingardens Colette R. and her family live in Ann Arbor. Her favorite flowers are Bee Balm and Black-Eyed Susans (both native) because they use less water and attract butterflies. MAY 2018

JUNE 2018 ANN ARBOR SINGLE SCULLER KEITH MATZ This photo was made in Ann Arbor early on a late summer morning. It captures the rising ground fog from the footbridge that crosses the Huron, about half a mile below Barton Dam.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY 27 Memorial Day World World Oceans Day 8 9 Environment Day Flag Day Ramadan ends Father s Day Summer Solstice Huron River 23 Watershed Council Water Quality Monitoring Training hrwc.org BE AN H2O HERO Put your lawn on a diet Prevent the growth of harmful algae in downstream lakes by avoiding phosphorus-based lawn fertilizers, which are restricted under Michigan law. Instead, keep down weeds and encourage root growth by letting your grass grow to a height of three inches or more. Then use a mulching mower to put back nutrients and organic matter. To find out what would most benefit your lawn, consider having your soil tested. Dieter B., Deena T. and Shalom have a rain garden in their yard. This special landscaping feature is designed to collect runoff, allowing water to soak quickly into the soils or be absorbed by the plants thus filtering out pollutants. Shalom likes the birds that are attracted by the native flowers. JUNE 2018

JULY 2018 BARTON POND, ANN ARBOR MARC AKEMANN Here, less than a hundred years ago and before the pond engulfed the floodplains when Barton Dam was built, the river meandered through open grazing land. The City began drawing its water from the Huron River around Today, the river supplies approximately 85 percent of Ann Arbor s drinking water.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Independence Day BE AN H2O HERO Speak up, speak out If you see illegal dumping into curbside storm drains and ditches, don t hesitate. Get on the phone. By making that call, you ll be doing your part to protect water quality for our entire community. Call to report illegal dumping. For hazardous or flammable spills, call immediately. Having grown up on the banks of the Ganges, one of the largest rivers on the planet, environmental consultant Sanjiv S. has a special affinity for rivers and waterways. For over 20 years, Sanjiv, his wife, Ana, and their children have deeply enjoyed the Huron River and its many parks. JULY 2018

AUGUST 2018 EGRET, BARTON NATURE AREA JOHN LLOYD This photo was taken from a kayak between the two pedestrian bridges at the Barton Nature Area on a warm fall day. I paddled to Bandemer Park and photographed 70 turtles for the Natural Areas Preservation Survey. I also saw herons, ducks, hawks and this brilliant white egret, modeling perfect form in flight.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Huron River Watershed Council River Cleanup hrwc.org BE AN H2O HERO Let it be In late summer, stop watering your lawn. Instead, let it go dormant. It won t harm the grass, and it will save a lot of water. In addition, to capture rainwater before it disappears into storm drains, consider using rain barrels, rain gardens and deep-rooted Michigan native plants. Robby G. enjoys early-morning kayaking on the Huron River in the company of the many birds that live along the river corridor. AUGUST 2018

SEPTEMBER 2018 PINCKNEY RECREATION AREA JOHN LLOYD This was taken from a kayak on Crooked Lake approaching the channel to Pickerel Lake during one of several fall color quests in the Pinckney Recreation Area. Composing quickly from my moving boat, I felt fortunate in capturing the funnelshaped sky and its reflection, both pointing to the one red tree in the scene.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Labor Day Rosh Hashanah begins 9 10 Patriot Day Rosh Hashanah ends Yom Kippur begins 18 Yom Kippur ends Autumnal Equinox Huron River 29 Watershed Council River Roundup hrwc.org BE AN H2O HERO Make the storm drain connection Storm drains are underground pipes that carry unfiltered rainwater, melting snow and pollution directly into our rivers, lakes and drinking water. Learn how to care for your curbside storm drain and keep it free-running by signing up for HRWC s Adopt-A-Storm Drain program. Sign up today at: hrwc.org Eric R. is studying environmental science at Eastern Michigan University. He loves to fish the Huron River for largemouth bass and northern pike. SEPTEMBER 2018

OCTOBER 2018 TURTLE CONGA LINE, BELL ROAD MARC AKEMANN The river is absolutely lovely here, with lush forested riparian zones, shallow rocky riffles, deep pools, and a path that stretches both upstream and down along the shoreline. This section of the Huron River is also known for its superb Smallmouth Bass population. (Please, practice catch-and-release!)

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Columbus Day Huron River Watershed Council Bug ID Day hrwc.org United Nations Day Halloween BE AN H2O HERO Mulch away There s much to be said for mulch. Leaves and grass that make their way into waterways add excess nutrients and use up valuable oxygen as they decompose. However, with the help of a mulching mower, you can use leaves and grass clippings as a natural fertilizer, and keep them on your lawn. Where they belong. Larry S. is a Huron River Watershed Council volunteer. His many contributions include improving a tool known as the Michigan Road Stream Crossing Inventory and piloting its use for a study of Norton Creek in Oakland County. There, he led a team of volunteers in assessing 40 crossings over 6 months. OCTOBER 2018

NOVEMBER 2018 LAKE ERIE METROPARK CHARLES HILDEBRANDT One of the state s premier hawk-watching sites during fall migration, this Metropark features three miles of trails through American Lotus beds, dense Hawthorn thickets, and marshy coastal wetlands a special place where Lake Erie meets both the Huron and Detroit Rivers.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Halloween Daylight Savings Time ends 4 5 Election Day Veterans Day Thanksgiving BE AN H2O HERO Follow the right Rx for drug disposal Old or unused prescription meds should never be flushed down the toilet. Instead, find a nearby take-back program. Or wrap the containers in duct tape and several layers of plastic bags before putting them in the trash. Jo El W. enjoys running along the Huron River. Flint s water crisis has made him keenly aware of the need to protect the river we share. NOVEMBER 2018 For more tips, check out: dontflushdrugs.com

DECEMBER 2018 WHITMORE LAKE REFLECTION KEITH MATZ The ice had covered the lake for only a few days before a warm-up arrived. The resulting thin layer of water created a giant mirror effect on the lake s surface. When these incredible clouds appeared, I was ready with my camera.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Hanukkah begins Hanukkah ends Winter Solstice Christmas Eve Christmas Day Kwanzaa begins New Year s Eve 31 New Year s Day BE AN H2O HERO Hold the salt The best way to keep salt out of our streams during cold weather months is by shoveling snow and ice early and often. And if you occasionally need a de-icer for sidewalks and driveways, choose an environmentally friendly product. As a volunteer for the Huron River Watershed Council. Ellery W. gained research and field work experience to complement her studies in biology at the University of Michigan. DECEMBER 2018

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THIS CALENDAR This project wouldn t be possible without the support of sponsors and volunteers. Since 2003, the community partners listed below have produced and distributed more than 300,000 biannual water pollution prevention calendars to Huron River watershed residents. These communities, organizations and individuals are committed to protecting water quality and securing our watershed as a permanent source of clean drinking water, natural beauty, and diverse recreational opportunities. We re grateful to each and every one of them. In creating this calendar, we made it a priority to contain costs and engage local vendors and photographers. A big thank you to all the individuals and businesses who helped make our 2018 calendar a reality! Calendar Photographers: Marc Akemann Charles Hildebrandt John Lloyd Jill Love Keith Matz
