5 Minutes of the, January 8, 2013 Regular RAMAC Meeting EAA Quonset Hut, Redding, California The meeting was convened at 7:00 PM, seventeen persons were present. The Minutes are pretty long, sorry, but the planning for the year was undertaken. The Minutes of the December 2012 meeting were accepted as presented in the Newsletter. Former Treasurer Jerry Nystrom reported we currently have $6, in checking and CDs. Safety Officer Norm Van Dyke hasn t been able to get to the field recently due to a bad back and so the just deserts of the worst recent crash, the Broken Prop Award, will be deferred till next month. The positive side of Safety concerned encouraging all of us to spot for persons flying, particularly to protect other pilots. Field Marshal Otis Bershers is planning a work party in mid-march. The festivities will include patching holes in the runway. Sunshine Lady Shirley Martin observed that we have been relatively healthy this month, however, Norm s back is sore and a skin cancer is being treated. In addition, new member Warren Fluornoy will soon have knee surgery in Sacramento. In Old Business (1) Jerry Nystrom presented a summary of last year s finances; details of income ($6,599) and expense ($4,918) were pointed out. Our fuel supply has been sold and this program ended because no person has volunteered to do the work. The raffles and donations at events where food is served have been good contributors to our bank balance. Mike Brown has been running a taught ship in the school education programs he leads and we expect to continue to support this activity. We do have small inventories of food, fun fly equipment, and office supplies. (2) Next Jerry led a discussion of how we should deal with new people who show up at the field and want to fly. First we want to be encouraging, but we do need to be aware that AMA insurance does not cover non-members unless they are enrolled in their Student Pilot Program. This program permits students to fly with AMA coverage for up to 60 days if under the supervision of a registered instructor. The Secretary was asked to enroll Charlie Hoisington, Jerry Nystrom and Otis Bershers as AMA Instructors. Other instructors will be sought. Forms for enrollment of students are to be kept at the field along with AMA and RAMAC membership applications. (3) We feel that the Newsletter is very important in holding the Club together. We have not been able to find a person to take charge of the whole task as Dave Kirkman and Mike Brown have so ably done. Soooo, as a work-around, we will try splitting the work up. Charlie Hoisington will be photo-editor, send any photos to him with titles and he will select those to be used and forward them to Mike Brown the Format King. Phil Harvey will submit the monthly biography column to Mike. We want a Copy Editor, this person would seek or create any other text (e.g. a planned fun fly event and a report about its outcome). He or she would also try to keep the results interesting and sufficient to keep us all on the same page as it were. To celebrate the birthdays of M Cargile, E Cavanaugh, B Johnson and P McLean Carol Bershers baked a great German Chocolate cake which was enjoyed by all thin persons present. In New Business we assembled a tentative calendar of events for 2013: March 12th March 16th Late March May 4th Corned beef dinner before meeting. 6 Charlie Hoisington Bio This month we will break with prior prac ce and learn about one of our long me members, Charlie Hoisington. He has been flying RC for about 24 years. He started with the Anderson River Park group, was a charter member with Ash Creek and then also joined RAMAC about 12 years ago. Some me a er he started flying models, he learned to fly full scale planes and says that his RC flying sped his progress in full scale. Charlie seems to go deeply into all his ac vi es he became a member of the CAP and flew search and rescue from the Redding area. A highlight of that era was taking his family of four in a Cessna 182 cross country to Oshkosh for the annual EAA show. They slept under the wing of their plane there and then flew on to Washington, DC, to Florida and then back to California. His RC interests are wide: he flies gliders, 3D, pa ern, and sports aircra (o en on floats). These days he leans to electric foamies because they are almost indestruc ble. He is a RAMAC Instructor Pilot. You will most o en see him on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday with Loren Asmus and/or Dan Sobieralski. Charlie was born in New York but moved to Carmel Valley at age five. He graduated from Chico State in Business Admin then went into real estate, first in Carmel Valley and then here in Redding. Charlie married Mary in 1965, they have two children who are both out of the nest now. Their home is in East Redding and has a seasonal pond which can be used for RC flying. Charlie has par oned the garage so that he has an air condi oned work shop for his planes. He and Mary are s ll physically very ac ve kayaking, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, ping pong, etc etc! We o en see Mary at club social events. When you see him at the field, make sure you chat with him, there is lots more to learn.

7 The 2013 Education program. All this years kids will make Delta wing planes. This is the prototype I made after making the templates. Mike Pound has also built a proto type as you will see in the next page. I went to class and had all this years kids make FPG-9 s while I told them what I had in mind for their class. I told them they needed to be sure they wanted to be in the class and that they also had to be good to be allowed in the class. I am guessing it will take 6-8 weeks to finish the planes, at that time we will take them all to the field to fly on buddy box transmitter systems. The motors, servos etc will be removed in the end and the kids will keep their planes. I was kind of disappointed they would be junk with no radio gear then thought they can rebalance them and turn them into gliders. I am sure to penetrate they will have to add a bit if weight but that will be an experiment for them and the teacher. Besides the kids, 2 teachers now want to make a plane:) Although this new program cost a bit to get set-up, there is gear for future planes to be made. I already have a second design in mind. I actually almost started building it the other day, then caught myself and said are you nuts! Don t you have enough to do. I guess that prototype will have to wait for a while! Some added colored tape and winglets I would again like to thank those who donated items to the education program. It now has 5 trainer planes, FIVE! buddy box setups and gear for projects like these! I will keep the club advised of the classes progress. Mike brown

9 FLIGHT SCHEDULE AND EVENTS Open Flying Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Warren Field. Glow starts at 8:30 a.m. and electrics may start earlier. Otis posts the weather forecast by 6:30 a.m. on Mon. Wed. & Fri. Call to see if flying is a go. RAMAC Business meeting is normally held on the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the Quonset Hut at Benton Airpark. Watch the newsletter for any changes to meeting time and place. NCR/CUF Business meeting on the first Thursday of every month at 7PM Round Table Pizza in the Mt.
