George Ribeiro was good enough to take them off the club s hands and sort through them prior to figuring out what to do with them. The meeting was called to order at 7:40 p.m. by Steve Boracca, with seventeen members and three guests, Don Wollesen, a friend of George Ribeiro s, came for the second time, Benno brought a friend along, and Dennis brought his neighbor, an aeronautical engineer. Welcome, all of you. Hope you ll join our club! The minutes of the previous meeting and the treasurer s report were accepted unanimously. Old Business Dennis Kanemura will be submitting our annual request for AMA charter membership, and said that we needed to know whether the flying site at the Monterey Bay Academy, our alternate flying site, met with AMA rules. Alan Brown said that we have a Memorandum of Understanding with the Academy, signed in 2005, which defines our mutual relationship. It does not however list features of the flying field which would involve meeting AMA rules. (The MoU has been forwarded to board members. Also, our charter has now arrived). David Tacklind will deliver club T-shirts to Steve Boracca. Thank you, David! New Business Don Good was contacted by a Cub Scout group.

2 They would like to come to the club some Saturday and perhaps get brief flying lessons. (The latest proposed date is April 6 th. Please note that on that Saturday, preference will be given to buddy-boxing Cub Scouts, although interesting airplanes may be flown as demos). We have had another from an organizer of the Watsonville Fly-In expressing interest in having us perform again at the Labor Day weekend event. He would like a short club bio, which Allen Ginzburg pointed out forms the opening page of our RC Bees website. So give some thought about possible demos! Jay Friedland and Allen Ginzburg will both be involved in the forthcoming Science Fair at the County fairgrounds on March 9 th, and were soliciting judges for that event. Alan Brown reported on a talk he had given to the BayView elementary school in Santa Cruz on How airplanes fly, including a flight demo on the soccer field. He repeated the talk to close out the current RC Bees meeting. Show and Tell The new electric-powered club trainer, a Saturn Super E, was on display. Gary Gonzales will be in charge of it. Bob McReynolds showed his Banana Hobbies A-10 Warthog, on which he spent a great deal of time in ensuring that he had the correct missiles on board, and that the airplane was suitably weathered. It really looks very authentic. Sorry, no photos, but here is one from the Banana Hobbies website, which is probably almost as good as Bob s! The 1500 mm. span airplane has a remotely controlled ejectable pilot and cockpit, and has two 70 mm. fans fueled by a six-cell battery. Don Wollesen, George s friend, showed us an old control-line team racer of his own design, which was capable of 104 m.p.h. powered by a K&B 29R, a hot engine in its day. Gary Gonzales brought along a semi-scale Convair Sea Dart made from 5½ mm. foam. The original airplane was going to be a supersonic seaplane fighter based on the Convair F-102. Jacob showed us the power supply for a CNC routing machine which he is scratch building. A terrific job from our young teenager! His father, Steve, built a number of small stands to store epoxy bottles upside down, to facilitate easy use, and gave them away to eager bystanders! Benno had yet another lightweight indoor flying model, this one a Mini Vapor. It weighs 9 grams complete with a 30 mah battery, and Benno demonstrated it convincingly for us in the hangar. After Alan s talk the meeting was closed. Down by the River Quit a few new airplanes out this month. Hobby King s RadJet is proving to be very popular at $54 ready for your receiver and battery. Here s how Hobby King shows it in their ads, And on the following page is Gary Gonzales s version.

3 things can happen to good fliers! Here s Stefan Warnke displaying his Edge 540as a hunting trophy, Kevin Crews beautiful Curtiss Pusher has made it to the field while Kevin attempts to destroy his uncrashable Beast! and has had some successful flights. One of our younger members, Zane, is having fun with an A-10 and a P-51. Here s the A-10. Patrick Hung has been buddy-boxing with Dennis Kanemura and Jacob, and proclaims that he is now ready to solo (and probably will have done so by the time you read this). Congratulations, Patrick! Meanwhile some of our old-timers with lots of flying hours behind them can still show that bad The Montoreano family was out in force recently, and here they are watching dad s expert EDF flying.

4 Bill Boone finally finished his Fun Cub, painted Cub Yellow, as it should be! And here are the boys toys. How about those nifty canard biplanes! It flies very nicely, complementing John Williams white version. Another birthday boy. Nick Marinovich, turned ninety in January, and still very active! Meanwhile Marcelo has his own new toys, a Banana Hobbies P-51 (happy birthday, Marcelo!), and an L-39. Here s the L-39. Jacob continues to entertain us with his 3-D flying, Nice safely taken landing shot from Paul Weir! while Alan Brown flies sedately at about 5 m.p.h. with his pre- World War I fliers. On the next page is his 1910 Deperdussin which is now quite civilized and flies comfortably hands off after adding a bit more dihedral.

5 aerofoils to make an airplane fly. (NACA became NASA after Sputnik). However Alan (I ll never fly a foamie airplane) has succumbed once again. He couldn t resist Hobby King s D.H. Vampire. However, it s going through some teething problems and so far will not track well down the runway. But it sure looks pretty! John Kent joined our club because he wanted to fly airplanes with propellers as well as his lovely gliders. And here he is with his Cessna, which is flying very nicely. Yes, it has a 45 0 sharp chamfered leading edge and a completely squared off trailing edge, and the first flight was exciting, almost decapitating our photographer, Paul Weir! However, eventually Jacob tamed it to some extent, but did threaten to round off the leading edge just a tad because that s where most of the lift comes from. So we ll look forward to its mark II version! And finally, from our far-flung empire in Colorado, Joe Sluga sends us this picture of Superman made by one of his club colleagues out there. Jacob manages to design and build his own models, mainly from flat foam, and sometimes defying the laws of aerodynamics. However, we all know that rules and laws are meant to be broken, especially in the world of model aeronautics, so here s his latest. First of all, we have to say that he found a nice lilac-colored piece of foam for starters. Secondly, as I found out in the full-scale world more than three decades ago, you don t have to have NACA Yes, it has flown, but the ailerons, read cape tips, says the builder, are a tad touchy!
