Frank Rhodes collected a $500 deposit for our annual trip to Mexico for a week s fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit. Call Frank for details and to reserve your spot: This trip is a great value and loads of fun. I go every year and would not miss it. Only a couple of spots left. Chattooga River Outing. We will travel to S. Carolina Nov for our annual trout fishing trip. We stay in log cabins at the Oconee State Park. This is a wild and scenic river with good numbers of rainbow, brown and brook trout. Please let us know if you would like attend. Fly Fishing Resolutions of the Month Watch your son or daughter catch their first fish on a fly. Tie better knots by practicing at home.

Tips for TBFFC This is a quote from Lefty Kreh from a few years ago. I have fresh water trout fished a lot lately and this continues to resonate and is especially meaningful. I have a few wading spots that I avoid because of slippery wading conditions and balance but my catch ratio has never been better. Having the rod do the work saves my joints and allows me to cast with ease. Instead of covering more water I have become a better observer and plan my strategy to catch more difficult fish. The fly fishing Fraternity has been a great help to me and my friendships continue to make fly fishing a wonderful sport. This will be my last Casting Tip article. If anyone would like to continue, I am available to help. Thank you all for your interest, friendship and help. Capt. Pat Damico P.S. We welcome tips from club members on how to improve casting or fishing. me those items to include in our newsletter. //Walt Lake Calm Outing: About 10 club members enjoyed another outing on Lake Calm in Odessa in June. Thanks to Dr. John Millns for letting us use his cabin and property to access the lake. Lake Calm is a crystal clear lake with about ½ mile of shoreline loaded with lilly pads and underwater grasses. Good numbers of pan fish and bass reside in the lake and readily respond to our flies. The weather was almost perfect with sun and light winds. Jeff Janecek, our freshwater expert, caught the most fish as always, but everyone had a good day catching. Bruce and Patty Anderson provided a super lunch and the club provided drinks. This is an annual outing and I encourage club members to try to attend next year.

Fly fishing has lost a pioneer. Leon Martuch Jr., passed-away in Traverse City, Michigan at age 90. With his father, Leon Sr., he founded Scientific Anglers, a company that changed fly fishing forever. His father, Leon Sr., working with bread pans and the plastics available in the 1950 s, invented the modern fly line. He developed both the technique for coating braided line with plastic and the dies needed to produce fly lines in different weights. His new lines eliminated the need to unspool, rinse, dry, recoat and re-spool silk line after every use. Leon Jr. then invited fly rod manufacturers to send us your fly rods and we will determine the SA line that works best with each rod. A new numbering system 1 to 15 followed his lead. Scientific Anglers was the first company to offer the entire package. SA s System matched a reel, manufactured by England s House of Hardy, with a rod, backing, fly line and leader. Mr. Martuch was one of 16 concerned anglers who met on the banks of the Au Sable River in Michigan to found Trout Unlimited and was instrumental in developing the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester, Vermont. On two occasions Mr. Martuch was guest speaker at the Tampa Bay Fly Fishing Club. Nick Colantonio

Smitty s Pan-grilled Red Snapper Recipe Our neighboring club, the Suncoast Flyfishers loaned us this recipe from Smitty. Our clubs are fortunate to have Smitty as a duel member. Fish one of his winning patterns and you will be on your way to catching a fish dinner. Ingredients: 4 (6 oz) Florida red snapper fillets 1 ripe Florida avocado, diced 2 cups Florida strawberries finely chopped jalapeño pepper, seeded and finely chopped ¼ cup red onion, finely chopped 2 tbsp cilantro, finely chopped 1 tsp fresh lime juice 1½ tbsp fresh lime zest ¼ tsp sugar 1 tbsp olive oil Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Club member Denise Bruner reports: last week we caught trout on the Jefferson, Big Hole, Madison and Upper Ruby Rivers in Montana. We based out of Twin Bridges and Ennis, we floated 4 days and fished on our own 2 days with my NC friend Debbie Griffith. We fished With Salmon Fly imitation called Chubbies and caught some of the biggest fish on dry flies, which is a lot of fun.

Capt. Bryon Chamberlin just got back from fishing 5 days in the Lower Keys with friends (June 15-19). Tough fishing, but I did manage a slam on fly on Monday. I had a better tarpon hooked (about 40lbs), but ended up breaking it off. I had to settle on a baby tarpon to finish the slam at the end of the day.

Carp Fishing Story by Andy Consantinou After being home in the UK for about 6 weeks, I finally managed to go to Manor Farm Fishery in Lower Caldecote for a spot of carp fishing. I had to wait for a hot day hoping the carp would cruise on the top so I could use the dog biscuit method. This involves throwing biscuits that float and using a fly that looks like a dog biscuit. When I got to the fishery I saw as usual there were several broods of greylag geese, which unfortunately gobbled up the biscuits before the carp had a look in. Prior to my visit I bought a 17 pound bag of dog food which was in my car so I had a brainwave. If I could distract the geese by feeding them the dog food I possible could have a chance on the carp. So went back to the lake and generously distributed the dog food in the hope that it would occupy the geese. Within 30 minutes the geese had gorged on the food and went for a nap on the bank. Now it was time to have another go at the carp. Within a few minutes I hooked and landed the biggest carp I have ever caught. It was a mirror Carp just over 30 which would be well in excess of 20 pound. I went home happy that afternoon managing to outwit the geese and the carp.

Capt. Rick Grassett: Tarpon action remains good this summer. Steve Gibson, of Southern Drawl Kayak Fishing, battles a tarpon on fly tackle in the coastal gulf while fishing with Capt. Rick Grassett.Capt. (941)

Fishing Report and Forecast What a great time to go fishing! Capt. Pat Damico suggests one of the many advantages to fly fishing is when the bite is on, a lot of fish can be caught. We don t have to fool around with weights, swivels, snaps and finicky braided line, but especially bait. Procuring live baits and keeping them healthy, the time needed to rebait and release smaller or nontargeted fish, and the chance of frequently harming them are greatly minimized. Cut bait is not a great resource. Once the proper fly is selected to "match the hatch," a single fly can last a long time, especially when constructed with synthetic materials. Since most of our flies that imitate shrimp, crabs and baitfish have a single hook, catch and release or catch and keep is simple once the fish is on. Filing or crimping the barb will not hamper your catch rate as long as adequate pressure is kept on the fish. Many hooks are available that are barbless. Use adequate leader strength and nonabrasive tippets that are strong enough for fish we seek. When fighting fish, keep your rod tip low and close to the water, always maintaining a soft bend. A mechanical gripping device and a dehooker similar to the ones used to quickly remove bait from a Sabiki rig minimize or eliminate the need to handle fish while keeping them in the water. When taking a picture, lift the fish horizontally from the water with wet hands and never hold it out of the water longer than you can hold your breath. Fly fisherman Pat Damico runs charters in lower Tampa Bay and can be reached at captpatdamico.com and (727) Capt Rick Grassett Fly anglers fishing with me recently, out of CB s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had good action with tarpon in the coastal gulf in Sarasota. We had multiple shots at tarpon and several hookups. My friend Steve Gibson, of Southern Drawl Kayak Fishing, had a good day with me on Monday with multiple shots, jumping 3 tarpon and battling one to close to the boat. Frank Zaffino, from Rochester, NY, also fly fished for tarpon several days later in the week with me. He also had good action, jumping several tarpon. Action was good but slowed following the new moon. Tarpon fishing should be good in the coastal gulf. Late season tarpon have usually spawned and are more aggressive. There should also be good action with trout, blues and Spanish mackerel on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. Fishing dock lights in the ICW at night is always a good option for snook and more. Walking the beach and sight fishing snook in the surf can also be good this time of year. Our natural resources are under constant pressure, please limit your kill, don t kill your limit! Kayak guide, Neil Taylor, reports June was good and July started out average. However, with better tides the action went to "excellent." In the dead of summer I do a lot of pompano trips. The pompano started out slower this year, but they have exploded. We have had two 50 pompano trips and another half a dozen 40 pompano trips. Going an hour before sunrise people have enjoyed the explosion of top water trout. The gurgler produced a dozen trout on a recent trip. This action will remain consistent all the way until late Fall.
