Also bring items to sell or swap to make room for all your new fishing stuff. Finally, bring a funny, weird or nice gift to participate in a white elephant gift ($10-$15) exchange. 2 White Elephant Exchange Players draw names to determine what order they will go in The first player selects a gift from the pool and opens it Make sure everyone can see the gift! The following players can choose to either pick an unwrapped gift from the pool or steal a previous player s gift. Anyone who gets their gift stolen in this way can do the same choose a new gift or steal from someone else. To keep things moving along, there are a couple of limits on gift swapping: A present can only be stolen once per turn, which means players who have a gift stolen from them have to wait to get it back. After three swaps, the turn automatically comes to an end (otherwise things could drag on for a long time). Three Swaps and the Gift is Out. If a present gets stolen three times, it s out of the game and the person who holds it gets to walk away with it. After all players have had a turn, the first player gets a chance to swap the gift he or she is holding for any other opened gift. Anyone who s gift is stolen may steal from someone else (as long as that person hasn t been stolen from yet). When someone declines to steal a gift, the game comes to an end. Note that for this last extra turn, the three-swap rule doesn t apply. Players can keep swapping until someone decides to stand pat, or there are no other eligible people to steal from.

5 Tips for TBFFC Here s a great video from the Orvis Fly Fishing Learning Center, featuring Pete Kutzer of the Orvis Fly-Fishing School in Manchester, Vermont. He has taught thousands of people how to cast, or how to cast better, and here he talks about the five most common mistakes that he sees on the water: starting with the rod too high off the water; not stopping the rod at the end of each forward and backcast; going too far back with the rod on the backcast; trying to throw the fly; and tailing loops. Chatoogga River Trip Fourteen club members traveled to Oconee

Rainy weather put a damper on the fishing, but spirits ran high.

6 Chatoogga River Trip Fourteen club members traveled to Oconee to trout fish for four days. Rainy weather put a damper on the fishing, but spirits ran high. We had a great time fishing, hiking and exploring. Shared meals each evening were superb. Thanks to all who participated and we will look forward to next year about the same time. Special thanks to Ted for organizing the trip.

8 We had another good turn-out at our annual Big Gun with ten teams-of-three competing. Local casters competed with casters from around the state. The weather was perfect with a light breeze from the north and not too hot. Participants tested their skills at six stations including the tiny Carl Hanson cup and the long distance cast. You could earn up to 100 points at each station for a perfect score of 600. Dave Choinard scored highest with a total of 445. Dave teamed with Zack Judd and Greg Peterson to win the team competition with a score of Dave Olson was our long cast champion, casting 116 feet and besting Bryon Chamberlin s 114 feet. Thanks to Dave Choinard for donating many Simms items for our free raffle. Joe Welborn of Carbon Marine also gave us multiple items. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped score and set-up. Ted Hagaman brought the sandwiches for lunch and Denise Bruner brought us coffee and donuts. Special thanks to Dick Miekka who signed folks up and tallied all the scores. Ken Moser came early and helped set-up as did Robert Fischer and Bryon Chamberlin. Raz Reed loaned us a Sage Igniter rod for the long cast. Thanks to all who participated and I hope you enjoyed the event. Please me with ideas on how we can do better. We will go back to yarn flies and think about a different rod next year. We are trying to get a company to donate a rod for the long cast that we can give away. //Walt

10 Saturday, December 15, Fall Casting Clinic at Tampa s Picnic Island Park, Shelter 611 Led by Master Casting Instructors Pat Damico and Dayle Mazzarella with backup by well-known instructors Leigh West, Steve Parker and others. Registration at 8 am. Free to FFI members (You can join FFI on site for $35 (Seniors $25, Juniors $15) Course starts promptly at 8:30 am with a review of basic casting principles. Some fly outfits are available for those who don t have one. Course continue until 3 pm. Bring your gear to be checked for balance and for your use. Leader material is available. Morning drills: Pick-Up and Lay-Down, False Casting, Feeding Line, Roll Cast, Roll Cast to Pick Up and Feed. Each drill will have an advanced challenge for those pushing their limits. 11 Fly of the Month Mop Fly Mike Perez The Mop Fly is the newest sensation in trout fishing. Using a piece of material from mops and gloves that are now on the market, trout anglers have been taking a surprising number of fish on something that seems to be totally unlike anything that a trout might normally see. Will it catch other fish? Try it and find out. Materials Hook - Tiemco TMC100 #10 Body - Mop fiber (car washing glove from Discount Auto Parts or mop from the grocery store). Eye - Feathercraft 1/8 fly tying bead Dubbing Thread - Danville 6/0 - same color as mop fiber. Tying Sequence Put bead on hook. Tie mop fiber on top of hook, using loose wraps back to hook bend. Advance thread back to hook eye then wax thread with dubbing wax. Apply a small amount of dubbing and wrap around hook behind bead. Whip finish and fish.

14 Fishing Report and Forecast What a great time to go fishing! Capt. Pat Damico sends this from his Captain s Corner: A quote by Canadian author and river conservationist Mark Angelo, "Rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are lifelines in the truest sense," should be celebrated by visiting one of the many pretty southern rivers in our area. A look at a map will show you their locations. A canoe or kayak is the ideal method to explore the upper reaches where they originate. The further you go upriver, the more desolate and picturesque. Get with someone experienced and familiar with all aspects of paddle travel. You must know where you can safely put in and take out. If you don t have your own watercraft, there are many local places that will give you a proper and safe start. Many local fishing clubs have members willing to share their knowledge. Take your favorite light-tackle spin outfit or 5-6 weight fly rod and enjoy some great fishing. There is usually a variety of freshwater species as well as some saltwater fish such as tarpon, snook and jacks that will give you a pleasant surprise. Familiarize yourself with fishing regulations that apply. Fly fisherman Pat Damico runs charters in lower Tampa Bay and can be reached at captpatdamico.com and (727) Kayak guide Neil Taylor reports: Now that the first front is through, the fishing will continue to improve with more fronts. The trout action was excellent last week, 30 trout over 18 inches caught on one trip. Five were over 20 inches, thus, we are getting in trophy size fish. Three days later on the opposite tide was not as good. The incoming tides appear to have better action right now. Pompano have wound down but aren't gone. Redfish remain a tough target. The breeding school swam right into the Red Tide so the future of redfish doesn't look good. Red Tide never hit most of my areas and with the coming fronts hopefully the bloom continues to diminish. Find Neil at and schedule a great day on the water with a modestly priced trip.

15 Capt. Rick Grassett reports: You may find reds along with big trout concentrated in potholes, along the edges of bars or tailing on shallow grass flats on negative low tides this month. This is a good month for catch and release snook action around lighted docks in the ICW. Some lights will also have trout and reds making it possible to get a dock slam. There may also be good action in the coastal gulf with false albacore (little tunny), Spanish mackerel and tripletail, depending on conditions. Snook and reds remain closed on the west coast of Florida. You may find Reds in potholes or along the edges of flats and bars when the tide is low. They may also tail on shallow grass flats of lower Tampa Bay or Gasparilla Sound on negative low tides. Lightly weighted flies, like my Grassett Flats Minnow, will work well in that situation. Weed guards are also important when targeting reds on shallow grass. Spoon flies are another good choice when hunting for reds although you may need to add a small (#10) black barrel swivel ahead of your bite tippet to prevent twist in your leader depending on the style of spoon fly you use, some will wobble while others may spin if stripped fast. You may also find reds around docks this month. Use a sink tip fly line and a weighted fly to get your fly into the strike zone for reds. You may find big trout in skinny water this month in many of the same areas where you find reds. The same flies and techniques that I use for reds will also work for trout in the same areas. I release all big trout (over 20 ) since they are usually females and I feel it is important that they are left in the water as breeders. There should be lots of options in December, although weather becomes more of a factor. When conditions are good, I like to fish the coastal gulf for albies, tripletail and more. If you re able to choose when to fish, fish ahead of fronts or on the strongest tides for the best action. Shallow water action can be very good on low winter tides. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by agricultural and residential runoff, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don t kill your limit!
