Robert is a good friend of our club and an avid salt and fresh water fly fisherman. Please join us for an informative and fun talk. This is a great attractor pattern in fresh and salt water.

I hope you all liked our presentation on fly fishing in the Keys. Guide Capt. Brandon Henley gave an informative talk on how and where to fish in the keys. Frank Rhodes collected a $500 deposit for our annual trip to Mexico for a week s fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit. Call Frank for details and to reserve your spot: This trip is a great value and loads of fun. I go every year and would not miss it. Chattooga River Outing. We will travel to S. Carolina Nov for our annual trout fishing trip. We stay in log cabins at the Oconee State Park. This is a wild and scenic river with good numbers of rainbow, brown and brook trout. 4 Tips for TBFFC Look to the numerous and varied YouTube videos for help on fly casting. Most have sound tips on the fundamentals as well as advanced techniques. Watching these experts cast is useful. To start, I recommend a video ( by Flip Pallot. I was impressed by his fluid casting stroke and economy of motion. Lefty Kreh, who first coached Flip, advocated using your body to help cast. In this video, Flip does just the opposite with only arm and hand motion. This suggests, that while the fundamentals of a good cast are the same, you can still develop your own style. Notice Flip also casts a nice long line, maximizing use of the tip of the rod, and letting the rod do the work. Fly casting is easy, but complex enough so that we always have the opportunity to improve. Work on your casting for more enjoyment and better results. Bring your outfit to our meetings for a quick, free lesson. We also have club rods available. And, don t miss our casting clinic on 15 December. We are also putting together two-piece outfits for new members who may not have an outfit. You may take and use these outfits as long as you like. If you advance in the sport and buy additional outfits, please return the old one for re-use. //Walt

5 Sponsored by the Tampa Bay Fly Fishing Club Sunday, November 18 at 9:00 a.m. Picnic Island Park, Tampa (Shelter #611) Experts and beginners alike are invited to test their fly casting skills at the Tampa Bay Fly Fishing Club s annual Big Gun Shoot-Out casting competition! Individuals and teams of 3 are welcome! Plaques will be awarded for highest scoring individual, highest scoring teams, and the Big Gun, the overall distance casting champion. Contestants will participate in competition stations that mimic the challenges of fly fishing, such as casting under the mangroves, into a cup of water, or through a hoop suspended a few feet off the ground. Come out and give it a try you ll be hooked! The competition will run from 9 am - 12 pm. There is NO entry fee, and lunch will be provided to all contestants. You may use your own rod for all competition stations except the Big Gun distance contest. Volunteers also are needed to help set up the course and score contestants. We welcome volunteers to help set up and score.

6 TED HAGAMAN S MUD MINNOW Materials Hair - Puglisi Back Country 3-D fibers Puglisi EP Tan fibers Hook - Mustard C68SNP-DT Size 1 Eyes - Fish Skull (Red Tying Sequence This fly is tied in the standard Puglisi style in multiple bundles with the fibers tied onto the top or bottom of the hook shank in the middle of the bundle, then folding the fibers back over the top and tying them in. Ted recommends using sparse bundles (10 12 fibers each) because it is very easy to make the fly too bulky. For this fly, he uses four bundles on the top and four on the bottom. Each bundle should be half the length of the full fibers in the package. Start by tying the belly color, the Tan, on top, at the beginning of the hook bend, tying first in the center, then folding it back and tying it again. Then tie a second bundle of Tan on the bottom, slightly forward of the first bundle.

7 Project Healing Waters Joe Perez s report for August. We had our regular meetings for this mouth and are still in the process of acquiring more tools, but getting there. We also had the opportunity of sending Dawn Hart to the Gateway Freedom Ranch in Lincoln County Montana. This ranch is designed to cover PHW s needs. Dawn had casting classes and drift boat fishing, catching 43 trout. We will have made changes to our meeting at the James A. Haley VA hospital. We moved our 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday meetings from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. to 3:00 to 5:00 pm for more participants from the inpatient program's. Also, we will have our regular meeting at Bass Pro Shop and our monthly outing and a special event on the 29 Sept. Healing Saturday at Minnows and Monsters will have a tent with fly tying and other stuff. We are seeking guest tyers from the Tampa Fly Fishing Club. Thanks Joe for all your hard work! 8 Capt. Bryon Chamberlin fished two of his guide friends in mid August; Capt. Honson Lau and Capt. Carl Ball. Not tons of shots, but made the most out of our opportunities. Biscayne Bay is a wonderful place to fish. If you want to target bonefish, permit and tarpon, this is as good a place as any to do it. p.s. Aren t bone fish the coolest?

9 Club member Ted Hagaman has beat the summer heat by fishing in Lake Keystone in Odessa. Try early morning or late evening in any body of fresh water in our area for summer action. Ted caught this 10 lb bass on his Keystone Gurgler, a gurgler pattern with a red-tipped flash tail.

11 Club members Kelly and Web Sobczak sent pictures from their trip to Fishing Bear Lodge in the Wood Tikchik State Park (Alaska). They caught hundreds of grayling, rainbow trout, and Arctic char - so fast at times the guide landed 2 fish at a time in his net.

13 Capt. Rick Grassett reports: I hosted a group of friends and clients on a fly fishing trip in southwest Montana in August. This is an annual trip for me and was my 17th year fishing in Montana. We fished the Beaverhead, Big Hole and Madison Rivers, a couple of lakes and a spring creek. We caught and released numerous brown and rainbow trout, brookies and a few cutthroat trout during the week. We used streamers, dry flies and nymph rigs on 3 through 6-weight fly tackle. The dry fly action was with a variety of grasshopper patterns, sometimes with a nymph dropper, or with a smaller dry fly and a few other bugs.

15 Fishing Report and Forecast What a great time to go fishing! Capt. Pat Damico reports on Mangrove Snapper: Mangrove (gray) snapper are often encountered while drifting the flats this time of year as they school in preparation for spawning later. When using a typical 8 or 9 weight fly rod with size 1 or 1/0 baitfish type flies while targeting redfish and trout, a snapper will be hooked. If one is found, many more are there. Deploy your anchoring system to hold your location. Observe the pattern that these fish are using to locate more. Probing deeper areas in grassy flats, rock piles and docks are often key locations. Switch to lighter tackle to make these tasty scrappers more fun. A 4 or 5 weight fly rod with a sink tip line and a 6-foot leader tapered to 8-pound test fluorocarbon is ideal, especially in clear water. A freshwater trout setup works well. Select a small weighted size 8 fly that imitates a crab, shrimp or baitfish with the hook pointed up to avoid snags. Use a countdown method and retrieve when the fly is close to the bottom or structure. Set the hook at the slightest tap. The minimum size is 10 inches; always check current FWC regulations. Fly fisherman Pat Damico runs charters in lower Tampa Bay and can be reached at captpatdamico.com and (727) Capt Rick Grassett reports September is one of my favorite months, although this is not a normal September. Reds should be schooling on shallow grass flats of Sarasota Bay and you also might find big trout there at first light, but with the recent severe red tide that we re having as this is being written that probably won t be the case this year. The key to good fishing this September will be finding clean water that is unaffected by red tide. Right now that would be the south shore of Tampa Bay, areas of Little Sarasota Bay and upper Charlotte Harbor. Baitfish along beaches will attract Spanish mackerel, false albacore (little tunny), sharks, tarpon and more. You should find snook around docks and bridges in the ICW. There should also be tarpon around bridges at night and in areas of Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor. Juvenile tarpon from 10 to 30-pounds should be a good option in creeks and canals. Red tide doesn t do well in fresh water, so areas where fresh water is flowing out of creeks and rivers should be a good option. Kayak guide, Neil Taylor, reports the pompano action faded and then exploded again. Like all fish, they move around., but when you find them their numbers are excellent. Trout have been reliable again after a couple of months where they were not as active. Big trout are most active around sunrise and nighttime is the right time for big trout. Red tide has threatened the area but hasn't made a big impact in the interior of Tampa Bay. If it weakens or moves back south we could be all right. If it stays the same strength and enters the main channel into Tampa Bay it will be a catastrophe.
