Coaching is delivered by our award-winning PE department and through local clubs. Entry to Woodham Sports Academy is subject to selection in some sports. Membership of the Sports Academy requires students to meet strict academic criteria in terms of achievement, attendance and behaviour. 3 OUR COACHES HANNAH KENT Director of Woodham Sports Academy Hannah has taken part in Royal Academy of Ballet lessons since the age of 3 and completed all of the RAD graded examinations including advanced work. She has competed in different highly recognised competitions, including the Fonteyn Nureyev Award, as well as the Master Class Scholarships. After winning this prestigious award, Hannah was given the opportunity to dance with the Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Dance, Lynn Wallis. She began teaching and assisting ballet lessons from the age of 15. Hannah has been involved in gymnastics, representing the Riverside Gymnastics Display Team travelling around the world competing. Her team competed in the Blume Festival in Gran Canaria and in other team competitions in Germany, Dublin and London. The competitions involved team performances as well as individual floor, vault and tumbling. ANDREW BELL Deputy Headteacher at Woodham Academy Andrew played golf professionally for three years prior to becoming a teacher. Working initially at Gleneagles Hotel, he later moved to the Celtic Manor Resort, where he was a senior teaching professional. As an amateur, he had a successful career, winning the BUSA championships whilst on a golf scholarship programme at Northumbria University, and achieving a lowest handicap mark of 1. Andrew now plays cricket for Chester-le- Street first XI in the North East Premier League, where he has featured in the three ECB National Championship finals in the last three years. LIAM CLOUGH Assistant Headteacher at Woodham Academy ANDY COLLETT Premier Player Football Academy UEFA A licensed goal keeper coach, Andy Collett, made over 235 professional appearances for Middlesbrough, Bristol Rovers and Darlington. After retiring from the game, Andy went into professional coaching, working at Darlington, Oldham Athletic, Hartlepool United and York City. PAUL EDDY Boxing Academy Paul is a level 2 England Boxing coach and GB tutor. He has enjoyed major successes in boxing over the past 20 years. Paul founded Seconds Out Boxing Academy in Prior to developing the state-of-the-art gym, he coached at Spennymoor Boxing Academy and was instrumental in developing the club over the past 10 years. Since forming Seconds Out, Paul has coached both male and female boxers to regional and national success. Boxing is a fantastic tool for discipline, respect and self-control. The aim is to transfer these skills from the gym into the classroom. There is no better sport than boxing for achieving this. KIM HALL Head of PE at Woodham Academy Kim has played both hockey and netball at club and regional level. She also has a keen interest in both swimming and dance. Kim has recently coached the Woodham Biathlon team (swimming and running) to the national semi-finals. Kim is responsible for the PE curriculum at Woodham Academy. Liam played in the Northern League for over 12 years representing Shildon AFC, West Auckland and Bishop Auckland and most recently Newton Aycliffe. Since retiring, Liam has become heavily involved with Spennymoor Town Football Club Youth Academy and currently runs the U18 elite squad.
4 DANNY KETCH Durham University and Great Britain Lions Danny brings a wealth of American Football coaching experience to our Sports Academy. Having coached for 10 years at Woodham Academy, he has been a part of many of the club s successes during this time. A member of the coaching staff for Woodham s three European Championships and World Championships in New Orleans and a Great Britain Lions coach in 2008 and 2009, Danny has now moved his expertise onto coaching the full contact version of American Football, where he and the Woodham Warriors have been the national runners up for 3 years. Danny also coaches for Durham University in the British American Football Association s national championship in which they finished runner up in 2014 and is a member of Great Britain Lions U19 coaching staff. NEIL MADDISON Premier Player Football Academy Neil played for Southampton for 15 years and made nearly 200 appearances in the Premier League, playing alongside great players of the era and household names such as Alan Shearer and Matt Le Tissier. In 1997 Neil was attracted back to his native north-east when a 250,000 transfer fee took him to Middlesbrough. During his time at The Riverside he made over 50 appearances in a 3 year period and played alongside one of England s most natural talents, Paul Gascoigne, as well as Garry Pallister. DANNY MORGANS Durham County Cricket and Durham Wildcats, Deputy Headteacher at Woodham Academy A talented cricketer in his own right, Danny made his debut for Darlington First Eleven at the age of 15. Danny has also assisted a number of local clubs in junior development and he is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished cricket coaches in the area. Currently Danny is working closely with the Durham County under 17s squad. Since 2005, Danny has also coached Durham Wildcats National League basketball teams. PAUL RICHARDSON County Durham Spartans Paul has played for the Spartans since their opening year in Having taken on more roles within the club and becoming the University Baseball and Softball Officer (USBO) while studying at Leeds Metropolitan University, Paul became a junior baseball ambassador with BSUK. Since then Paul has earned his Level 2 Coaching and Umpiring qualifications. Paul will also be taking on a role with the Woodham Warriors, a team Paul played for as a student at Woodham. Over the last 14 years, Paul has represented teams competing at the highest level and earned international caps with the Great Britain Lions. Paul currently coaches the Durham Saints of Durham University. OUR AMBASSADORS JASON STEELE Former Woodham Student Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Honours include captaining the England U19s team in the 2009 European Championships. ROSS TURNBULL Former Woodham Student Former Middlesbrough and Chelsea goalkeeper. Honours include winning the UEFA Champions League in 2012, Europa League and the FA Cup in 2010 and 2012 with Chelsea.

6 OPPORTUNITY The ladder of success is best climbed by skipping on the rungs of opportunity. Ayn Rand Woodham Sports Academy provides many opportunities for students to travel. Annual visits, open to both girls and boys, include the snowsports course at Pila in the Italian Alps, offering professional tuition from Interski coaches in both skiing and snowboarding. Students also enjoy a range of lively après-ski activities. INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY
7 PERFORM Technique is what you fall back on when you run out of inspiration. Rudolf Nureyev Open to all students in KS3 and KS4 who enjoy dance and want the opportunity to improve and perform. Students that seek membership will go through a selection process to guarantee them a place in the Dance Academy. Building upon the success the Dance Academy has experienced throughout the years, Woodham dancers continue to perform at multiple events and compete against other schools nationally. The Dance Academy has won the North East Great Big Dance Off and was placed second in The North West. They have also performed at the Gala Theatre for their Feet first showcase. Woodham Academy s annual Dance Showcase allows all dancers to demonstrate their amazing talents in performances and choreography to friends and family. Coached by Hannah Kent and Kay Clarey of Joanne Banks Dancers. Hannah, Director of Woodham Sports Academy, is a qualified dance teacher (PGCE PE and Dance) and has trained at the Royal Academy of Dance. DANCE ACADEMY
8 AMBITION You can t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get. Michael Phelps Woodham Academy is one of only four secondary schools in County Durham with a swimming pool. Woodham Swimming Academy is open to all keen swimmers in Years Some will already take part in competitive swimming at club level. Others may simply wish to develop their speed, strength and technique and to enjoy the first-class facilities available at Woodham as part of a general fitness programme. Woodham Swimming Academy competes annually in the English Schools Swimming Association North East trials, enjoying major success over the four years finishing third, fourth and fifth overall. SWIMMING ACADEMY
9 SUCCESS Gold medals aren t really made of gold. They re made of sweat, determination and a hard-to-find alloy called guts. Dan Gable Students have always played Water Polo in PE lessons at Woodham, with former student Angela Winstanley-Smith representing Team GB in the London 2012 Olympics. Current student, Ben Stephenson, represents Great Britain at U17 level. Woodham Academy students are now taking part in sessions with squads from all ages of Sedgefield Water Polo Club. Trials are open to all swimmers in Years 7 and 8. WATER POLO
10 TEAMWORK We are speed, we are strength, we are one. Pep Guardiola Coached by Danny Ketch and Paul Richardson. Danny Ketch brings a wealth of American Football coaching experience to our Sports Academy. A member of the coaching staff for Woodham s three European Championships and World Championships in New Orleans and a Great Britain Lions coach in 2008 and 2009, Danny also coaches for the Durham University Saints in the British American Football Association National Championship and is a member of Great Britain Lions U19 coaching staff. Paul Richardson, formerly a Woodham Warriors player himself, has won international caps with the Great Britain Lions. Paul currently coaches the Durham Saints of Durham University. The Woodham Warriors squad is open to girls and boys in Years 7, 8 and 9 and is selective in Year 10 and 11. Having represented Great Britain in two NFL World Championships in Germany and New Orleans, the Woodham Warriors are recognised as one of the most successful teams in the UK. 11 COURAGE For a goalkeeper, there is no hiding place. Brad Friedel Woodham Goalkeeping Academy gives any current or aspiring goalkeepers the opportunity to access professional coaching. Delivered by Andy Collett of Premier Player Football Academy. UEFA A licensed goalkeeper coach Andy Collett made over 235 professional appearances for Middlesbrough, Bristol Rovers and Darlington. After retiring from the game, Andy went into professional coaching working with goalkeepers at Darlington, Oldham Athletic, Hartlepool United and York City. Open to all students. GOALKEEPING ACADEMY

UEFA A licensed coach Mark Proctor played for Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest making over 450 appearances as a professional, playing under Brian Clough, one of England s greatest managers. Woodham Girls Football Academy gives girls the same opportunity as boys to access professional coaching and to play competitively. Selective in all year groups. GIRLS FOOTBALL ACADEMY
14 TALENT Work transforms talent into genuis. Anna Pavlova Coached by Hannah Kent. Accessible to all students in KS3 and KS4, students have the opportunity to develop skills to perform and compete. Woodham Gymnastics Academy has enjoyed many successes over the years and now regularly competes in regional and national competitions including floor, vault and trampolining competitions. Coached by Hannah Kent. Hannah started competing in gymnastics from an early age. During this time she enjoyed major success in competitions and festival around the UK and Europe. GYMNASTICS ACADEMY: GIRLS
15 STRENGTH Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will. Mahatma Gandhi Given the popularity of the gymnastics academy, we created separate girls and boys squads to double training capacity. Girls activity focus is on developing and improving flexibility and sports acro. Boys focus is on developing strength and tumbling. Trials are open to all students in Key Stage 3. Open to all students in Years Durham Spartans were formed in the summer of The idea for a local baseball team came after John Johnston was introduced to the game by a friend, Sean Wallwein. The Spartans, now coached by Ian Porley and Paul Richardson, are helping to motivate players and are determined to have a successful baseball team in Newton Aycliffe. 17 SPEED Only those who can see the invisible can do the impossible. Frank L. Gaines Handball is a very quick game that requires players to have good hand-eye coordination as it is a cross between basketball and football. Classed as a new sport, its popularity at Woodham Academy is growing as handball is taught as part of the PE curriculum. Woodham Handball Academy is open to students in Years 7, 8 and 9 who enjoy handball or who want to try a new and exciting sport. Players will learn new skills that will improve spatial awareness, tactical appreciation, general fitness, throwing and catching skills. Woodham Handball Academy is coached by Liam Clough, Assistant Headteacher at Woodham Academy. HANDBALL ACADEMY
18 ATTITUDE Sports do not build character, they reveal it. John Wooden Woodham Table Tennis Academy builds on the success of Woodham Table Tennis Club. Many students already enjoy playing regularly during lunchtime and after school. The Table Tennis Academy provides high-level coaching in order to take the sport to a more competitive level, developing players agility, balance and co-ordination. Open to all players in Year 7-11 who wish to develop their skills. Coached by Woodham Academy PE department. TABLE TENNIS ACADEMY
19 EFFORT A cricketer s life is a life of splendid freedom, healthy effort, endless variety and delightful good fellowship. W. G. Grace Coached by Durham County Cricket coach, Danny Morgans. Open entry Year 7, selective thereafter. A talented cricketer in his own right, Danny made his debut for Darlington First Eleven at the age of 15. Through his late teens and twenties he was a regular in their 1st eleven playing alongside former Durham County players Andy Fothergill and John Glenenen in one of the most demanding amateur leagues in the country. Danny always had an interest in coaching and worked his way through the ECB coaching structure and on achieving the Level 2 award was quickly invited to work with Durham County Junior squads in Since then, Danny has regularly worked with elite junior county players as an age group lead coach, as well as overseeing the Durham County provision at district level for a number of years. Danny has also assisted a number of local clubs in junior development and he is widely regarded to be one of the most accomplished cricket coaches in the area. Currently Danny is working with Durham County under 17s squad, and was assistant coach when the team won the ECB National Championships. CRICKET ACADEMY

21 DETERMINATION You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them. Michael Jordan Coached by Durham Wildcats coach and Woodham Deputy Headteacher, Danny Morgans. Open entry in Year 7, selective thereafter. Having coached successful school teams, with 13 Woodham players representing the North East Region at England trials at Lilleshall in 8 years, Danny was approached by Durham Wildcats Head Coach, Dave Elderkin, to work on their Junior National League Programme. Danny has worked as assistant coach for the men s BBL team during the season. Danny has coached the Wildcats Under 16 team to the League Championships as well as coaching five Woodham school teams that reached at least the last 32 of the National Schools Tournament. Danny has also coached two players, who he first encountered as novices, who have been selected in a 20 player England squad, one of whom has played for England. During the 2013/14 season the U14 basketball team won a clean sweep of all County Durham and Durham Wildcats competitions. BASKETBALL ACADEMY
22 LEADERSHIP Leadership, like coaching is fighting for the hearts and souls of men and getting them to believe in you. Eddie Robinson Four places annually to spend up to one month coaching at Camp Cody, New Hampshire, USA. Open to Year 11 through a competitive application process. Camp Cody is a traditional summer camp for girls and boys aged Nestled on the sandy beaches of beautiful Lake Ossipee amidst the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA, the magnificent National Forest setting provides unlimited outdoor opportunities. We offer four places annually to Year 11 students who wish to work at Camp Cody during their Summer holiday. Students are selected following a highly competitive application process and receive full training in sports leadership prior to departure. CAMP CODY
23 COMMUNITY The Foundation is all about giving kids access to sport and what you find is they get right into it. The idea is to make sure that at as early an age as possible, young kids will get a liking for sports that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. The Rt Hon Tony Blair The Tony Blair Sports Foundation was set up in 2007 by former Prime Minister and MP for Sedgefield, Tony Blair, who wanted to give something back to a region he had represented for over 24 years. Jeanette Pickard, Chief Executive of the Foundation, says: We want to encourage sports at grass roots level and open up participation to everyone, not just those who are lucky enough to have a talent. Working with Woodham Sports Academy, our joint Leadership programme provides the opportunity for students to not only gain nationally accredited sports qualifications but also the chance to get invaluable volunteering and coaching experience in their community. Students on the programme have access to bespoke TBSF workshops and member events aimed at promoting personal development and the recognition of students achievements during their time on the programme. This programme not only provides the students with nationally recognised sports qualifications but gives them the leadership, organisational and communication skills that will benefit them in all areas of their life.
