THE HOWLING WOLF RUGBY CLUB NEWSLETTER. SEPT 2012 Dear Member Welcome to the first edition of our new Club Newsletter The Howling Wolf. It is our intention to circulate this monthly during the season to keep everybody updated with news of achievements and details of upcoming events. In line with my previous note to you all, I believe that this is a very exciting time to be a member of Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club. There is a lot of eager anticipation for the forthcoming new season, with a huge sense of belief that we can achieve new heights right across the Club, from the 1st XV down to the Under 6 s. In the Seniors, I believe that Terry Sands, Gavin Hogg and the team have assembled the best and strongest squad ever seen at the Haberden. We are looking forward to some high quality rugby and believe we have a very real chance winning promotion. Please do come and support both the 1st XV and the Wolves, particularly during home games, though, of course, travelling supporters are always very welcome. Support makes a massive difference to the performance of the team, as we ve seen during the Olympics. In our Youth and Mini sections we have new management structures and personnel in place. Along with the new coaching team, headed up by Gavin Hogg, they are working on many exciting initiatives to help develop our coaches and put in place new structures and procedures that will ultimately lead to our young players not only enjoying their rugby more, but also having the opportunity to develop into the best players they can be. High quality coaching, good facilities and strong guidance and management are core to us achieving this. Please help to support them and your Club on Sundays. It s always great to see parents not only showing enthusiasm for the teams from the touchline, but also in their support for the Club by enjoying refreshments in the clubhouse post match. It s your Club, so please enjoy it! Finally, the Club is looking for some help from volunteers. If you have a little spare time, however small, at whatever level, please contact one of the team managers or coaching staff who will be pleased to try to get you involved. Good luck to all players, coaches, and managers for the Season I hope to see you all at the Club over the coming weeks and months. Mike Robinson Chairman
Playing Chairman report I believe that the season is going to be a very special year for our rugby club. With fifty players attending pre-season training across the under 17 s, Colts and Senior squads, now is the time to convert the hard work on and off the field into promotion. We are fortunate to have strong squads in terms of ability and numbers and so there will be lots of healthy competition for team places. Another positive move for the club has been the re-branding of the 2nd team to the Wolves. Led by Chris Oxborrow, the Wolves will continue to provide a pathway to the 1st team, for those players that aspire to and have the commitment for playing at the highest level, but also provides an enjoyable and competitive team environment for senior players. The evergreen Tim Silk continues as 3rd team captain for the forthcoming season. Essential to our success, both now and in the future, the 3rd team provides a route for developing players through Wolves to 1st team, and at the same time and, most importantly, offers social rugby for our senior players. Our ladies team, led by Sara Clarke, are looking forward to building on the successes of last season. My final note, as you would expect, is about the pitches. Lots of hard work by a great many people has gone into repairing and maintaining the pitches over the Summer for which we are grateful. They look spectacular, although Nigel Birrell s mowing technique needs reviewing! The following points will help us maintain the pitches: Coaches / Managers: Always welcome your opposition and ensure they know where they are to warm-up and play When training, move around the pitch so as not to wear out one area If playing on pitch number 2, players and spectators please walk around pitch 1, not across it Andy Spetch Playing Chairman Mini s Chairman report Well, here is it, my first official communication since taking over from Hameed as the new Chairman. My name is Olly Jackson, now residing in Elmswell but was brought up in Woolpit since my parents moved to the Nursery there in The club has changed quite a bit since I played here as a colt. Firstly I would like to take the chance to officially thank Hameed and Nigel for the dedication they have given. I only hope Neil Ireland (the new Vice Chairman), Becky Haywood (Fixtures and Press Secretary) and I can emulate the success and direction they have shown to so many youngsters and parents over the past years.
Secondly, I personally can t wait for the new season to begin. Not only do we have changes in our committee over the past few months but we are seeing some signficant changes in RFU rules being implemented that will affect some of our minis ages groups. In June I was invited to select committee of regional rugby officers to discuss the newly proposed Mini s code. No major changes have been made to the way the Minis play rugby for nearly 25 years but as from the 1st of September this year the Under 7 s, 8 s and 9 s will see improvements and differences. The core values of TEAMWORK, RESPECT, ENJOYMENT, DISCIPLINE and SPORTSMANSHIP remain central to the development of the game, but, as parents, we know children learn best and gain more enjoyment by doing and taking part. They gain most of their skills by playing small sided games with limited rules and regulations.. In a nutshell the differences are:- A couple of key dates for your diary, 16th September - Registration Day (Meet the coaches, Committee, insight into training schedule, how to volunteer, social activities for the year etc.) 21st October Bury St Edmunds Mini s Rugby Festival (over 2500 people on site including 750+ players) Finally, each Main differences for under 7 s Current 7-a-side Coach allowed on pitch Knock-on penalised 60m x 30m pitch Main differences for under 8 s Current 7-a-side Coach allowed on pitch No going to ground 60m x 30m pitch Main differences for under 9 s Current 9-a-side Introduction of: Tackle Ruck Maul Scrum Line-out 60m x 35m pitch Pilot 4-a-side Referee as coach Knock-on not penalised 20m x 12m pitch Pilot 6-a-side Referee as coach Can go to ground to score 45m x 25m Pilot 7-a-side Introduction of Tackle 60m x 30 pitch month I hope to give an update on progress from each age group as well as an intro to some key members of the many volunteers that keep this club running. If you have any questions or would like to enquire about volunteering at the club feel free to me on the below address. Olly Jackson Mini s Chairman oliverjackson@greeneking.co.uk
Youth Rugby Training nights for youths: Tuesdays 6.30pm Under 13s Wednesdays 6.30pm Under 14s and under 15s Wednesdays 6.45pm Under 16s Thursdays 6.45pm Under 17s *The times may vary slightly as each set of coaches find out what suits there age group. Senior Rugby 2012/13 This will prove to be an exciting year for Bury St Edmunds RUFC when we hope to realise our ambition of playing National League rugby. The coaching team and squad have been busy getting preparations in place during the off-season to ensure we are in the best position for our push to win London North 1. We have assembled a senior squad that has great quality and depth welcoming some new recruits to our ranks this season as well as and watching cleanly the development of our young home grown players who we expect to see pushing for that 1st XV jersey. Our aim from day one of pre-season has been to set National League standards in everything we do, as a management and coaching team and a playing group, to ensure that, come 1st September, we are the fittest and best prepared side in our league. Matt Edison, a former Bury youth player, takes over the reigns of captaincy from Martin Webdale. We believe Matt s leadership skills, combined with his technical ability, will prove to be a winning formula in leading us to promotion. With the added strength and depth of our squad, we have an exciting year ahead for the Wolves. Combined, the squad can now act as a proper channel for development for our younger players and an opportunity for senior players to return to fitness and form. We have pencilled in some strong additional fixtures for the Wolves this season and we are confident that the standard of rugby being viewed will be the highest that has been witnessed at the club, ever. Pre-season training has been well attended and the players are currently working extremely hard in each session. We look forward to having a strong start to our campaign when we take on Rochford at home on the 1st September in the first game of the season, spurred on by the loyal vocal support from the Bury faithful on the touchline. Gavin Hogg Club Coach

August Player and Member interview - Matt Edison The first interview of the season for The Howling Wolf is with our new club captain Matt Edison. Matt is a Bury boy through and through, having played for the Club from the age of fourteen in youth, before moving abroad to play for USA U19s and captaining the USA U20 team. He returned to East Anglia joining Cambridge for a successful stint playing National 1 rugby. But with the lure of the home club just down the road, Matt moved to play for Bury in January this year, making an immediate impact on and off the pitch! A dynamic back row player and a strong ball carrier, Matt is an excellent lineout forward and has a high work rate too. Matt will captain the side this season where his experience and leadership will be a key factor in what we hope will be a successful 2012/13 season for the 1st XV. What age were you when you started playing rugby? 14yrs old. I d previously played football as goal keeper What is your earliest rugby memory? Running around the 3rd team pitch not knowing what I should be doing. Ric Martin was coach and soon showed me the light! What is your greatest rugby memory? Playing and winning the National Plate Final at Franklins Gardens What couldn t you live without? Coffee Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with? Obviously my girlfriend but also Hank Moody and Mila Kunis If you could have one super power what would it be and why? To fly so that I could go anywhere and save petrol. What would you like to achieve this season? Be undefeated What do you feel are Bury s 3 best assets? 1 Face pace 2 Ability to spot space 3 Resilience when under pressure
Warm up Match last Saturday First warm up match of the season last Saturday.Bury win but were given a stern examination by Midlands 1 side Peterborough Lions. Peterborough Lions 29 - Bury St Edmunds 38. Bury began their preparations for the forthcoming season with a hard fought victory over Midlands 1 outfit Peterborough Lions. The match was played in 4 x 20 minute quarters to allow both sides to try out several players, Bury using 26 in total. The hosts are a side packed full of big physical players that play with a surprising amount of mobility and they ensured Bury would have to scrap for every point earned. Coach Gavin Hogg commented that we can take a lot of positives from this first outing. Yes, there were some frailties exposed and certainly some key areas to work on. However, considering the amount of players used and the regular rotation, the scales defintely came down on the positive.the line outs were executed superbly, the scrummage improved as the day wore on and, despite the loss of Page and Eggars early in the match (to go with the absent Martin, Gooderham and Jones), there was still promise out wide. To read the full match report posted by Simon Lord go the club website. Logo The eagle eyes amongst you may have spotted something else new, aside from the title of the newsletter. Yes, you re right,we have a brand new logo, our very own howling wolf. The club has been working on it for a while. The brief was to get something that looked as much like a wolf as possible, which is fierce and cool looking to appeal to a range of ages, especially our youngsters and could easily be printed and embroidered. This has now been approved by the exec and will gradually be phased in around the club. All new orders for kit and clothing will feature the new logo. We hope you like and let s hope our lucky mascot brings the club just that!
