THE HOWLING WOLF RUGBY CLUB NEWSLETTER. OCTOBER 2012 Message from the Chairman Welcome to the second issue of Howling Wolf. Well, what a cracking start to the season it s been. Without wanting to tempt fate, we couldn t have envisaged a better start. At the time of writing the 1st XV are unbeaten with 4 wins from 4 matches in the league, having played some truly spectacular rugby and scored a massive 268 points. With only 24 points against us, we are sitting very proudly at the top of the table. Since we were promoted into this league five seasons ago, it is by far the best start to the season we have had. If you include the two warm up matches, we have now been unbeaten for seventeen games. Well done to all the playing management team, the coaches and, of course, the players. We eagerly look forward to the rest of the season. Elsewhere, our 2nd XV team, Wolves, have impressed, their highlight being a win against North Walsham. They are also playing a very high standard of rugby and fulfilling their role as support for the 1sts, with many of the squad being interchangeable. The Colts are also unbeaten to date, with two impressive performances, whilst the U17s, 16s, 15s have all kicked off the season with wins, so well done to all. The U12s now have a healthy 45 lads as members... so there is a great future for the club. Our management and running of the WSC rugby academy, led by Gav Hogg is helping to develop not only our own young players but also young rugby players all over the county. Furthermore, Ben Skully, our Community Rugby Development Officer is now coaching in more local schools, than ever before. On top of all of this, our programme of developing all of our volunteer coaches at every age group is well on track. All of the this is part of our plan, to help more youngsters turn to rugby, to enjoy our great game and to be our 1st team players of the future. Some of our players will go onto greater things, and through the club we can give all our players the chance to get noticed, through our relationship with the Northampton Saints Academy, run by a former Bury head coach, John Curry. On that note, congratulations to Colt Sean Davies, whom the club recommended to John. Sean was given a trial and is now on their development list for the future. In the Youth Focus you will read about other players who are getting recognised at Saints. Mike Robinson Chairman

Update from Playing Chairman Senior Teams Games Played Won Lost Drawn Points for Points Against 1st VX Wolves Rovers We have fantastic strength and depth in our squad with competition fierce for places. The standard of rugby has arguably been the highest for years which means we have been able to select a 1st XV & Wolves side that produce excellent rugby. This in turn feeds down to the Rovers with a higher standard now throughout all of our senior playing teams. Ladies A promising start to the season with 14 regular ladies training so far. Head coach Scully comments The girls continue to amaze me with How well they train! Both the new and the experienced girls are always improving and are a pleasure to coach. There will be some matches very soon. Watch this space! Colts and Under 17s Under the leadership of Ben Clark the Colts, sponsored by SERVEST and the U17 s have made a great start to the season. The Colts are now preparing for their first match in the National Colts Cup on Sunday 21st October at Cambridge, and the Under 17 s are getting ready for their first experience of the Eastern Counties Cup. It is great to see club stalwart Neil Walker dusting off his coaching kit to work with the squad. Gavin and the other club coaches have been working hard with both mini and youth coaches to ensure that all players receive high quality and consistent coaching. I would ask all coaches to take on board the advice Gavin is offering and ensure that sessions are prepared and delivered in the right way. Remember you are coaching the 1st team players of the future! On this note, it is great to see young Bury bred players such as Josh Borley, Rob Duchesne and Jamie Cooke taking their chance in senior rugby. Finally, I would like to say a short term goodbye to those players who are heading off the University or travelling. We look forward to seeing back at the Haberden. Remember the future is green and yellow, the future is Bury St Edmunds RFC. Andy Spetch Playing Chairman
Youth Focus Thank you to everyone who came to Registration Day on 9 September, which turned out to be very successful. The coaches found the day useful with Gavin Hogg, and the boys enjoyed some new faces in the coaching team. I hope we managed to underline the key targets for the next few years: sport for all, games-based training and a requirement for everyone to play their part by regularly attending training, making themselves available for matches, getting the right amount of nutrition and sleep and showing a respectful attitude towards coaches, team mates, opposition and officials. New team managers have been appointed to support coaches in communicating with parents. For details on who is your team manager please visit the website. Forthcoming key fixtures for U16 include Shelford & Ipswich on 14th Oct and Colchester on 21st Oct. Prior to that we anticipate that all Youth age groups will be sending teams to the Annual RHS Sevens Tournament on 30th September. We are very pleased to see a large number of boys representing Suffolk, Eastern Counties and Northampton Saints EPDG. At Under 16 level, back row Ollie Deeming, winger George Turner and lock Louis Hicks played in various Saints games against Leicester, Cardiff and Saracens over the summer and fly half Ewan Evans is also now part of the EPDG group. Flanker Sam Hunt joins these players in the Eastern Counties squad that will play games against Essex, Middlesex and Hertfordshire during the autumn. Ollie Deeming George Turner Finally, Matt Stevens, our commercial coordinator, is looking to secure potential sponsors for the youth section, so if anyone knows or has contacts that may be helpful please pass the information on to alistair.evans@te.com.
Minis Report The season has well and truly started in earnest for the Mini section. The under 7s, 8s and 9s coaches have adapted well to the new rules from the RFU with a coaching development festival at Sudbury scheduled for end of September to iron out any issues. The under 6s and 7s are well under way on the All Weather Pitch under the supervision of Head Coach, Jason Lane. The continuing popularity of rugby is demonstrated by the large numbers of children joining each week. A thank you must go to the parents who have kindly stepped in to assist with coaching. Getting stuck in The main event this month for the Minis is our Festival on Sunday 21st October. The largest in East Anglia, 2500 players and supporters are expected on the day. We are delighted to welcome Carr s of Bury St Edmunds, Bury s BMW and MINI dealership, as this year s festival sponsor. They will add some extra excitement to the day by bringing several of the latest model vehicles to the event. One MINI Coupé will be filled with rugby balls in a guess the number of rugby balls in the MINI competition. All players can take part, for free and the person with the closest guess will walk away with the rugby balls, generously donated by Terry Sands of Samurai Sportswear, for their club. Spectators and participants can enjoy hospitality in the form of hotdogs, bacon rolls, cakes, sweets and ice-creams as well as stalls selling the famous Samurai rugby merchandise, rugby inspired crafts and face-painting. The size of an event like this requires assistance from within the club and we are therefore seeking volunteers during the day. If you are free to support your club, if only for a couple of hours, with setting up on Saturday 20th October or during the day on Sunday 21 October, please contact Minis Chairman Olly Jackson - oliverjackson@greeneking.co.uk. Help is needed with car parking, catering and administration as well as cake and sweets donations. Neil Ireland Minis Vice Chairman

Your Club needs YOU! In order to help run the club and keep costs to reasonable levels, all sections of the club need more volunteers. Currently there are a few doing a lot and whilst they are doing a great job, they really need more help. If you can spare just a few hours to help with any aspect, be it playing, admin or just as a dogs-body, contact Mike Robinson, Ali Evans, Olly Jackson or Jane Spetch. Two small, but important roles that we desperately need to fill are a referees coordinator and a volunteers coordinator. Read all about it If you d like to read all about your teams successes in the local press please send match reports (no more than 200 words) and a photo to rebecca.haywood@btinternet.com on Sunday evenings. And finally New feature to Howling Wolf, starting this month, is our picture caption competition. Intended for the amusement for the masses and to heap embarrassment on the subject, please send your captions for the following sequence of photos featuring Ben Radmall, to rebecca.haywood@btinternet.com. The winning caption will be published next month. The winner is invited to claim his or her free drink and packet of crisps from the bar whoopee!
