SORRENTO DUNCRAIG JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB Hawk s Squawk ISSUE 1 JUNE GOLD SPONSORS: INNALOO Hi everybody and welcome to the June edition of the Hawks Squawk. With the season well under way the committee have had a busy time to get us where we are now. We have worked hard in processing over 870 registrations and setting up 13 modified, 8 open and 31 Auskick teams into their respective competitions. The team allocation were even more difficult this year due the changes in age groups brought about by alignment to school years. This resulted in major team rearrangements in the Year 8, 9 10 competitions and then grading fixtures held in the Year 8 & 9 competitions. We hosted two weeks of Year 8 grading games at Seacrest Oval in amongst our normal fixture games and it was very successful. We had a number of comments from visiting clubs about the standard of the grounds and the facilities. In part it s the great support we receive from our sponsors that allow us to keep our registration fees down to one the cheapest in the area. I m pleased to say we have a large number of sponsors who have signed up to support the club again in the 2012 season. As the sponsors support the club we also ask that our members when they have the opportunity support our sponsors. In the last couple of weeks we have held our main social event for the year Bogan Bingo evening with many people getting into the theme. I thank all those that took part and made it such a success and those teams who donated prizes for our raffles. In particular I d like to highlight our social coordinators Lisa Ferguson and Vanessa Gilbert who did such a great job of bringing it all together. Check put the photos on the club s Facebook site, there s more than a few members who appear comfortable in flannelette shirts and mullet haircuts. On a more serious note, after a disappointing start to the season we have recently had to implement a new Discipline Policy and highlight our Code of Conduct. The policy means that penalties handed down by the district will be doubled by the club. Yellow card penalties will also investigated by an independent committee member and reviewed by the Football Operations Committee to see if an additional club penalty should be applied. The Club s discipline policy augments the new competition E point system where red and yellow cards can impact the premiership points accrued by a team. I m pleased to say that since we implemented the policy, game day behavior has improved significantly. Our Open teams are doing well on their respective competition ladders and our across the board our modified teams are also competitive in their age groups. Our Auskickers have also been enjoying the completion including a couple of rounds of year 3 cross district games. Coming up in the next month we ll see the Auskick Gala Day which will be hosted by our club for the first time this season. This day involves Auskick teams from right across the district converging on Seacrest and playing a number of games against teams from other clubs in a round robin competition. We expect to see over a thousand players and just as many coached, parents and spectators also attending. Finally we welcome Bernadine Sparke to the committee role of Club Communications. It s great to have another member from our Auskick families on the committee. If you have any spare time and think you can assist in any way on the committee we would really love to hear from you. Till next time, enjoy your football. Mark Lawler President

Vice Presidents Review Congratulations to former SDJFC players: Laine Rasmussen on his League debut for West Perth. Laine is also currently in the lead for the 2012 WAFL Combined Past Players and Officials Association Rising Star Award. Stephen Mansfield on his League debut for East Perth Jack Darling, West Coast Eagles, for kicking a "Supergoal" in the NAB Cup for this SDJFC received a $1000 worth of footballs. Raffle Tickets This year the club has once again partnered with the Subiaco Football Club's raffle, This is one of our Club's major fundraiser bringing in over $8,000 this year. This revenue assists the club greatly in both keeping registration fees competitive and assisting in the on going purchase of equipment for all age groups. Your support is much appreciated. Please keep your tickets handy Subiaco raffle is drawn 15th July Coaches & Managers The next Modifieds and Open Rules Coaches and Managers meeting is scheduled for Thursday 26th July, Percy Doyle Clubrooms. Looking Smart! This year the club has introduced a new range of apparel more closely aligned with our Hawks" (Hawthorn) colours. All the committee are now wearing the new club polo shirts as well as the Coaches and Managers of the Modifieds and Open Rules Competitions. Also, thanks to our generous sponsors, this year all Open Players have received the new club polo shirt and all the Coaches and Managers of the Modifieds and Open Rules Competitions have also received a club jacket. Mike Sweeny Vice President CONGRATULATIONS to the following players: Greg Clarke (Yr10 Hawks) selected in the WA State 15s Schoolboys Football Carnival to be held in Adelaide during the school holidays. Ben Evans (Yr 11 Hawks) selected in the International AFL team to compete in the State 16s Football Carnival in Sydney during the school holidays Ben was the only player to be selected from WA. 3 Modifieds Review We have seen the number of teams grow to 13 in the Modified Section of the Sorrento Duncraig JFC. The number of teams in each year group is as follows, 4 x YR4 Teams, 4 x YR5 Teams, 2 x YR6 Teams and 3 x YR7 Teams. This equates to approximately 250 children playing football for Sorrento Duncraig on a Sunday morning, and ensures the future of the club is very bright. The Year 4 teams have taken to it like a duck to water and their teams are proving very successful and more impor tantly their player retention rate is extremely high. We have also seen the YR7 group participate in many Little League fixtures, whether it be for Subiaco, North Beach, or the Eagles. The behavior has also been of a very high standard with NIL yellow or red cards being handed out to our boys. We encourage all the players to keep enjoying their football and we thank all the parents for involving them in junior sport. Yr 6 Lions with Matt Priddis I would also like to extend a big thank you to all the coaches and man agers for devoting their time and efforts into their sides. It is often a thankless job, but without you all junior football would simply not happen. I like to watch all the games and it appears that we are devel oping the skill side of the game to a very high level. The skill level and enjoyment of the game are the two key factors. Have Fun! 4 AFL Little League Game The club was very lucky to be invited to play in the Little League fixture at the recent AFL blockbuster game at Patterson Stadium between the West Coast Eagles and Carlton. Sorrento Duncraig JFC formed a combined side from our 3 x Year 7 teams coached by Dan Cahill from the Y7 Dolphins. The boys played in the Eagles jumpers and in front of a crowd of over 35 thousand cheering spectators, under lights on the big arena. It s an experience they will never forget. The team played a brilliant game of football in slippery conditions and it was great to see them combining with their new team mates for the night. This will only help build the bond between all Sorrento Duncraig players. As always, the Sorrento Duncraig players conducted themselves perfectly and represented the club with aplomb. Well done to all. Stuart Page Modified s Co ordinator Sponsorship Review Once again the Football club has been fortunate to secure a number of sponsors for the 2012 season. This year we have 17 sponsors on board from a vast range of business s from the community and their continued support of the club is vital to day to day running costs and keeping the costs of players registration fees down to one of the lowest in the competition. This year the committee has undertaken to use part of the sponsorship funds to provide every player in our open rules teams with a club polo shirt. These were handed out recently and,as a coach of one of the year 8 teams, it was great to see the boys wearing the shirts with pride on game day. As you all are aware the last few years has not been the easiest to be in business. The G.F.C, new taxes, increased overheads and reduced bottom lines has seen a lot of small business cut back spending to the bare minimum. Therefore it is vitally important that we support the businesses that support the community and especially your football club. Please try to use the club sponsors where possibly and if you do please acknowledge that you are from the Sorrento Duncraig Junior Football Club. On behalf of the Sorrento Duncraig Junior Football Club committee, parents and players I would like to thank all our Sponsors for their kind support this year and if anyone who has a business not conflicting with our current sponsors that would like to discuss the opportunity of sponsoring the club please do not hesitate to call me. Peter Grickage Sponsorship Co ordinater HAWKS SQUAWK - JUNE PAGE 4

Auskick Review Auskick continues to underpin the Sorrento Junior Football Club's future success. and may I say, the success of the club isn't measured by how many flags we can put on a wall, but how many kids we can have a positive impact on for the period of time we have them at the club. Some of the benefits of being involved in this wonderful sport for kids are... To socially interact with others To learn how to win and lose humbly To learn to be part of a team and start to recognise how you can contribute to that team To have a lot of fun To be physically active for a couple of hours on a weekend...and there are many more! Keeping that in mind, what a sight on the weekends, 15 ovals, 15 matches, 31 teams, 420 kids, 800+ parents and supporters, and everyone looked like they knew what they were doing, and importantly the kids were having a great time. Congratulations to all involved, from the kids playing to their parents, to the team Managers, the coaches, the umpires, social directors, first aid volunteers, the Auskick sub committee to the SDJFC committee, collectively we are doing the code of Football very proud. Some highlights throughout the year to date include, two nights of night football under the lights, one gala day at Medibank Stadium (absolutely smashed with wet weather) some inter club matches against other grade 3 teams from other clubs A very special thanks to our volunteers sub committee who are dong a wonderful job week in week out All the coaches and managers and umpires of each Auskick team, we had a record 31 teams take to the field every week and they were dependant on this group of volunteers driving it every week. Christine Howarth : Communications legend, making sure all the s go out on time to all the team managers and coaches and answering many tricky questions and enquiries to give the Coordinator a life at home. Bernadine Sparke : Has come onto the committee during this year and doing a wonderful job supporting our structure, and doing this newsletter :) Nick Clements: My reliable junior champion who blows the siren every week, on time and in all conditions!!! Great effort and responsibility for a young lad. Cory Lake : Coach mentor for 2012 season, and assistant coordinator. Is one of our most experienced team members joining Auskick some 8 years ago. Cory is a great sounding board for the Coordinator. The Canteen Ladies: What a magnificent effort they put in each week. A huge thanks to you all and your work is greatly appreciated. The SDJFC committee deserve a huge pat on the back, many thanks to all members for their support. Continues over... HAWKS SQUAWK - JUNE PAGE 5

Auskick Gala Day A notice to all Auskick parents and players, we will be having an Auskick Gala Day on the 4th August. The schedule of games we have listed that weekend will not be on. The pre primary will not play at all as the Auskick Gala Day is for Year 1's to Year 3's. We need as many of the parents to help out on the day as we host all other teams and clubs from within our area at our club for the day. I predict there will be something like 1,000 kids playing footy on this day at Seacrest. Add two parents or siblings to each participant that's got to be approximately 3,000 people participating in the day!!!! We only have this opportunity once every 8 or so years so let's put on a good show. More detail will come out about this event, but the key thing is we will all need to help out during the day at various stages. Regarding our Auskick Centre, we welcome constructive feedback, so if you have any information that you think can assist us in improving our club in the future we are happy to listen. The very hard measure of success of our collective efforts should be based on how many kids re enrol next year in not only Auskick but also to the modified rules. So please get the message out there for the kids to stay with footy, it s a great healthy alternative to sitting in front of a computer all day!!! Colin Rose Auskick Coordinator Auskick Review continued Canteen Review Our Canteen Manager Laurel, along with Cindy, Paige, Scott and I thank all who assisted in the canteen so far this year. A special thank you to Nat, Paul, Jack, Alex and Liam for their help every weekend. Your assistance is invaluable. To Chris our local coffee mechanic, whether you were able to fix our ailing machine or not it was a blessing to just have your help in a time of need. I would like to thank Matt from Expresso Delight who has supported us for many years. Due to circumstance beyond our control our new coffee machine has not worked as planned and I would like to thank all members and their families for their patience whilst we have been rectifying the issue. This year we have implemented a healthier food option. We have a larger variety of fruit juices, Ham and Salad Rolls, Toasted Sandwiches, Soup, Muffins and Fruit. We will continue to have our old favourites on Sunday of Sausage Sizzle, Pies, Sausage Rolls and Bacon and Egg Burger. If you have any suggestion that you feel will improve our service to you please let the Canteen staff know. Rosemary Goodin Canteen Coordinator HAWKS SQUAWK - JUNE PAGE 6

Social Committee The place to be on 23 June 2012 was at our Club s Annual Fundraiser, Bogan Bingo. The Craigie Leisure Centre Function Room was packed with Bogans and even some 80/90s Rock Stars. It was a sight to behold and awesome that everyone got into the spirit of the evening by dressing up. Even our President Mark Lawler donned a flannie for the night!!!! There were mullets, flannies, Collingwood Footy Club attire and uggies galore. Some of the men were even enjoying having hair after many years without it. It was a sight to behold and awesome that everyone got into the spirit of the evening by dressing up. Even our President Mark Lawler donned a flannie for the night!!!! From the feedback that Vanessa and I have received everyone who attended fully enjoyed the event. Bogans were treated to a colourful entertainment show comprising of 2 games of Bingo, Air Guitar Competition and Best Dressed Competitions. We had some really awesome team names like Dilligaf, The Uncouth Half Truths, The Feral Ockers, Bruce s and Sheila s, The Shazza s and Bazza s, Winnie Reds and Winnie Blues. Congratulations go to Auskick Team 6 who was deemed to have the Best Team Name Bogga s Bogans. We had Are You a Bogan individual questionnaire with a series of questions like:, Do you regularly drink Jim Beam or Bundy? or Do you know a Wayne or a Tracy? Based on the plethora of dress ups, we weren t surprised to learn that the winner was 97% a Bogan. Congratulations to Mark aka Angus Gilbert for being crowned the Biggest Bogan. A special thank you to all the Committee Members, Chris Foley, Lachlan Kickett (Y6 Hawks) and Paige and Rob Goodwin who once again were an amazing team leading up to the event and on the night, we really appreciate all your efforts. From the generosity of our Club Members and Sponsors we raised over $10,000 through ticket sales, raffles, silent auction items and bar sales. The success of the evening can solely be attributed to our Members through the donation of amazing hampers, gift vouchers and auction items. Sorrento Duncraig Junior Footy Club is full of amazingly generous people, so THANK YOU for making Bogan Bingo such a success! 8 Registrars Review Registration Day and Allocation day are now just a distant memory and the season is now almost at the half way mark. We would like to thank all our members that registered on line this year. I m sure most would say that its not that bad. It sure made things easier for us. Its now time to make sure that all new details are updated on line so all members receive news and correspondence throughout the year. Again we have an increase in members this year with: Auskick numbers = 423, Open & Mods = 451, total 874. Finally, we would like to welcome all our new families to the club and wish everyone a safe and enjoyable remainder to the season. Paul and Misread Hodgson Registrar Trainee Program The club has 3 boys from our Yr 11 sides that are undertaking a sport trainee program where they will be spending time at the club in various roles. 9 Discipline Policy Sorrento Duncraig Junior Football Club Inc Discipline Policy The aim of this policy is to ensure the best possible game day environment for our players, spectators and officials. As a club we will enforce a zero tolerance of unacceptable on and off field behaviour. In the first instance Players, Spectators and Officials should refer to the Club s Codes of Conduct available from the club s website. Where a red, yellow or official (JCC or Inter club) complaint has been levelled the following additional conditions will apply. 1. Red Card any player receiving a Red Card (and found/pled guilty at a tribunal or accepting a prescribed penalty) will receive an equivalent penalty to the district penalty from the club (1 week suspension as a minimum) to be served in addition to the district penalty. In addition the player will be ineligible for the Club s Fairest and Best (F&B) or runner up (F&B) Trophy. 2. If a player receives 2 Red Cards (and found/pled guilty at a tribunal or accepting prescribed penalty) within a season, the player is then ineligible for any Club Trophy and the club reserves the right to review the players registration in accordance with Section 10 of the club s constitution (TERMINATION OF PLAYER MEMBERSHIP). 3. Yellow Card any player receiving a Yellow Card shall have to explain their actions to a committee member independent of that team, who will make a recommendation to the Football Operations Committee as to whether the player should be suspended. The Football Operations Committee may then level a club suspension on that player. The duration of the club s suspension is at the committee s discretion. 4. For both Red and Yellow Cards the Coach & Manager of the team will be asked to explain what actions they are undertaking to maintain behaviour within their team.
