Welcome! Hello and welcome to the 2019 Fireball District Cub-o-Ree. The guide that follows contains all the information your pack will need in order to be ready for a weekend full of fun and friendly competition. Feel free to split up this guide amongst the leaders and parents in your unit in order to assist them in preparing for the different activities. My name is Priscilla Molerio. If you had told me just a few short years ago that I would be volunteering my time with the BSA (much less camping!), I would have said you are crazy! But the one hour a week got me, too. Now here I am as Chief of the 2019 Cub-o-Ree, clearly volunteering more than one hour a week and I can t imagine not being a part of this incredible organization. I had never before realized the amount of planning, preparation, time and care that goes into making each district and unit successful for our youth, but without a doubt the largest factor is the caring. Everyone, from the people at the council who run the show behind the scenes, and the Cub Masters who work tirelessly to set their pack in motion and keep them on track, to the leaders and parents that bring the children to the meetings and events all have one main thing in common: we all care about these kids and want them to have a great time and gain as much as possible from their scouting experience. I hope you are all as proud as I am to have a hand in making this all possible for this generation of scouts. Sincerely, Priscilla Molerio Den Leader and mother of 2 Pack 552 Page 2

Ahoy, mateys! my name is Iris Rios-Llano, I came into scouting like a lot of us that have been involved in scouting as a parent just trying to help my little skipper get the wind in his sails and learn all that he could during the pack meetings and yes we all start off helping here and there and then the One hour per week volunteer turns into a lifetime of endless rewarding volunteer hours. My son, my daughter my husband and I have been able to enjoy many years of memorable moments not only with our son, but with many other scouts and parents along this voyage. I can only hope you are willing plot your course and start on a voyage which leads to a successful adventure with your scout(s), sibling(s), and family members and of course, other fellow scouts,. I know there were several steps you took to get here, today. The first step was wanting your son/daughter or both to be a scout. Your Youth Protection training set the motion. This is one level of understanding; we adults agree to continuously update every two years. Continue to Follow the Boy Scouts of America s standards, trainings and be proud of your scouting success. Sincerely, Iris Rios-Llano Iris Rios-Llano Of Pack 247, Troop 247 and Ship 1912 Page 3

We scouters come together as a tribe to celebrate the Webelos Graduating Dens. Scouts Own Sunday morning everyone is invited to attend Scouts Own Interdenominational service, dressed in Class A uniform. Immediately following will be the most anticipated part of the weekend, the Awards Ceremony. Please be mindful that all breakfast should be eaten before, as this ceremony will begin on time. PER PACK: 1 Cub Scout team (Tiger thru Bear) / 1 Web/AOL Team Go Fish Fishing Tournament Team Event Timed event, scouts are to pretend as if they were fishing. They will cast their fishing stick with the magnet on one end and the fish will have a magnet on them as well to simulate as if you hooked a fish. Those who get the most fish during the time allotted will win the game. The team with the most fish in the shortest time will win over all. Page 22

Broom Relay Race Unit Den Event This is a 4-scout x Den-team timed event (ALL Pack Ranks must be represented); time starts when the horn sounds. The scout runs to obstacle and tags next scout to continue obstacle course. If a scout falls during run, he must start from place of error. Not continuing from place of fall is a 5 second penalty. Time ends when the last scout on relay team crosses the finish line. Best Team Average time wins. Time is calculated by adding all scout times and dividing the total by the number of Scouts to get the Team Average. Obstacles in race: Cross the ropes / go thru the tires / swing across the water / sack race to the finish line Each Pack is allowed: 2 Tiger teams / 2 Wolf teams / 2 Bear teams / 2 Webelos teams / 2 AOL Teams (4 scouts per team) NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE 4 SCOUTS THEN 1 ST SCOUT IN RELAY TEAM MOVES TO LAST POSITION AS SOON AS HE ENDS HIS FIRST OBSTACLE RUN. Sea Soccer Team Event The objective of soccer is to kick the ball inside the other team s goal; there is no limit to the number of goals that can be scored during game time. Games will be a Max of 30 minutes divided in two 15-minute halves. There will be no tied games, so if the game ends tied it will be decided by penalty kicks Teams will be a Max of 8 Kids and a minimum of 5 in the field and we will have no limits of substitutions during the game (The amount of players will be determined by the number of kids available to play for the team with the lesser amount of players) There will be no headers. This means while in soccer generally allows the use of the head, it is a general rule of soccer clubs not to allow small kids to use the head to avoid them getting hurt. While we will not ask to the scouts to wear cleats, they will need to use shin guards. Pass back rule will not be enforced (this when a defender passes the ball the keeper and he gets it with his hands) Since this will be the first time we have Soccer as a Cub-o-Ree event, here are a few more rules, and in greater detail Page 23

No Hands, please First, the rule for a hand ball includes using any part of the body from the tips of the fingers to the shoulder. Second, the proper way to look at this soccer rule is that a player cannot handle the ball. A ball that is kicked and hits a player s hand or arm is not a hand ball. This means that the referee must use his or her own judgment to some extent in determining whether or not a hand ball is accidental contact or a purposeful attempt to gain an advantage. Believe it or not, there is also a situation in which the goalie cannot use his/her hands. Throw-ins A throw-in is taken when the ball crosses a sideline and leaves the field. The two basic soccer rules for a proper throw-in are to have both feet on the ground and to throw the ball with both hands over the head. Corner Kicks & Goal Kicks A corner kick or goal kick is taken when the ball leaves the field across the end line (the end of the field). If the offensive team kicks it out, play is restarted with a goal kick. If the defensive team kicks it out, play is restarted with a corner kick. The goal kick is taken from anywhere inside the goalie box as it is affectionately called. It can be taken by any player, not just the goalkeeper. The corner kick is taken from yes, you guessed it the corner nearest to where the ball left the field. Fouls The common rule of thumb on fouls is If it looks like a foul, it probably is. This is too true. A player cannot kick, trip, jump at, charge, strike, push, hold, or spit at an opponent. Parents should keep in mind that soccer can be a physical, contact sport when two opposing players both want the soccer ball, so bumping or going shoulder-to-shoulder while competing for a ball is not a foul until the hands or elbows come up. This is a bit of a judgment call and not all referees will call it the same way. Some soccer rules are actually not black-and-white. Remember though, the referee is ALWAYS right. Direct and Indirect Free Kicks On a direct kick you can score by kicking the ball directly into the goal. On an indirect kick you cannot score. An indirect kick must be touched by another player before it can go into the goal that is the kicker and a second person. The referee will signal which type of kick it is. For an indirect kick, the referee will hold one arm straight up in the air until the second person touches the ball. No arm up, it s a direct kick. There are many soccer rules around what causes a direct or indirect kick. In general, a direct kick comes from a contact foul or hand ball. Everything else is indirect. Penalty Kick A penalty kick results from a contact foul or hand ball by the defending team within the penalty area the large box on either end of the field. So it s a type of direct kick also. The ball is placed on the penalty spot, 12 yards in front of the center of the goal. All players must remain outside the penalty area and the penalty arc until the ball is kicked. The goalkeeper must have both feet on the goal line until the ball is kicked. If after the ball is kicked, it rebounds off of the goal or the keeper and stays on the field, the ball is live and anyone can play it. Two-touch Rule A player cannot touch the ball twice in a row when putting the ball in play. You will see this called many times in youth soccer. It applies everywhere. You will see it frequently on kick-offs or direct and indirect kicks. If a player barely hits the ball and decides to take another swipe at it, that is a two-touch. This also applies to throw-ins. A player cannot throw the ball in and then kick it. This is not permitted. Page 24

Deep Sea Obstacle Course This is a timed event where scouts are to run quickly and safely at the start line, travel through, over, and under the course laid out in front of them. Completion of course and Best time wins. After times are recorded, and if there is not a line, the scouts are welcomed to participate again. Clownfish Carnival This is a timed event at each station or table, allowing each unit to attend the mini carnival setting. Scout will follow directions given. Complete each event. Events will range from: sack race, three legged bubble race, sponge water splash, memory game, trivia, Kim s Memory, Space Balloon Derby. Scout with the best time wins. Grouper Toss Scouts will toss beanbags and try to score points by making the beanbags through rings. They will have 5 opportunities per turn to score points. Team with the highest score wins. In the event of a tie, there will be a tiebreaker round where one designated scout will throw 3 additional beanbags. Canoe Race Team Event (Webelos/AOL ONLY) This is a Webelos/AOL (ONLY) timed event. All Webelos and AOL scouts can race 2 scouts per canoe. Paddling time starts when the horn sounds. The team must go around obstacles without touching them and race back to the finish line. A two second deduction per obstacle contact will be applied at the end of the race. The best time wins Knots Relay Team Event (Webelos/AOL ONLY) This is a knot-tying skills timed event. Scouts will be tested on their ability to complete any of The Six Boy Scout Knots. Time starts when the Knots Judge gives the GO and it ends when the knot run is over. Page 25

Flag Duty (Arrow of Light ONLY) At scheduled time (6:30-7:00 PM), report to Headquarters, please be on time. All Arrow of Lights (Cross Over scouts only) with one leader per pack must attend. This will qualify and can be signed by scout master for Tenderfoot Rank of scout s new Troop handbook. After completion of Scout s transferred unit application form, scout rank can be recognized at individual s Troop unit meeting Scout s Corner Bonus Points This section is ideal for the Arrow of Light, Webelos, or even Bear Den for Communication/ Computer. This section is a dedication of facts. This is an individual section; only one scout per unit is to turn in a box for scoring. This is meant to be a fun interactive activity for the Cub Scout and his family. This activity can be submitted to the Youth Fair as a Cub Scout activity with proper planning, refer to the Youth Fair Guide. A research project of the Scout s interest: The topic is to be dedicated to the theme but can be fun, does not have to be scientific in nature. Scout can choose a famous ship, a sailor, a marine, a deep sea creature, a known shipwreck, or any sea-related interest. * PROJECT MUST BE NEAT IN OVERALL PRESENATION, AND SCOUT-MADE.* For Example, if your scout chose Nemo: The scout should find out the who s who facts of his found interest; can be from internet or books. Find and print the picture of interest. Scout should answer why he has chosen the interest. Decorate/Cover a 12oz empty cereal box with material of choice i.e.: construction paper, newspaper, paint, or natural materials. After completing typed paper report, cut and glue report to size on the front cover of decorated box, under printed picture. Draw or paste P. Sherman s mask on the back of the box- decorate/color. Follow Cub-o-Ree instruction details to paste in each correct section they belong: top flap, bottom flap, front and back panels, side panels. Page 26

This should include: Label and paste the following titles in correct sections: PICTURE of INTEREST, FACE the FACTS, MY UNDER THE SEA QUEST Top Flap of Box/ Title: Under the Sea Fireball Cub-o-Ree 2019 (can be typed) PICTURE of INTEREST: put on front of box FACE the FACTS: (true facts and information) can be in bullet format or no longer than two paragraphs. Allow scouts to make it fun, their own words and on their own. Guide them for spelling, true sources, and let this be a learning experience with computers, internet findings. Can be typed but no extra points; can be neatly hand written. MY UNDER THE SEA QUEST: scout answers why he has chosen this interest Bottom Flap of box: Scout s First and Last Name, Rank, Age, Unit (can be typed) Back of box: Images or references related to the topic of interest. Both Side Panels: Title of what book, movie, or program scout s printed picture is from. (can be typed or decorated) *If you chose to allow a tiger or wolf to enter this section, the criteria changes. Below is an example only. Please have scout choose their own movie or book: Top Flap of Box/ Title: Under the Sea Fireball Cub-o-Ree 2019 (can be typed) A Picture of chosen interest: Placed on the Front of Box Face the Facts: A hand written fun fact of chosen interest (can be bullet) MAX 3 Bullets, placed under picture. My Under The Sea Quest: Youth s drawing of a related subject to the picture of chosen interest; can be colored in any art medium or remain black/white. Bottom Flap: Scout s First and Last name, age, rank, unit (can be typed) Back of box: Images or references related to the topic of interest. Both Side Panels: Title of what book, movie, or program scout s printed picture is from. (can be typed or decorated ) NOTE: Units who choose to participate in Scout s Corner may earn 5 bonus points. In the event of a tie, this may serve as a tie breaker. This may also help you recover from lost points in other areas. Page 27
